muslim:2940aʿUbaydullāh b. Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī from my father > Shuʿbah > al-Nuʿmān b. Sālim

What is this hadith that you narrate that the Last Hour would come at such and such time? Thereupon he said: Hallowed be Allah, there is no god but Allah (or the words to the same effect). I have decided that I would not narrate anything to anyone now. I had only said that you would see after some time an important event that the (sacred) House (Ka'ba) would be burnt and it would happen and definitely happen. He then reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Dajjal would appear in my Ummah and he would stay (in the world) for forty - I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years. And Allah would then send Jesus son of Mary who would resemble 'Urwa b Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) would chase him and kill him. Then people would live for seven years that there would be no rancour between two persons. Then Allah would send cold wind from the side of Syria that none would survive upon the earth having a speck of good in him or faith in him but he would die, so much so that even if some amongst you were to enter the innermost part of the mountain, this wind would reach that place also and that would cause his death. I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Only the wicked people would survive and they would be as careless as birds with the characteristics of beasts. They would never appreciate the good nor condemn evil. Then Satan would come to them in human form and would say: Don't you respond? And they would say: What do you order us? And he would command them to worship the idols but, in spite of this, they would have abundance of sustenance and lead comfortable lives. Then the trumpet would be blown and no one would hear that but he would bend his neck to one side and raise it from the other side and the first one to hear that trumpet would be the person who would be busy in setting right the tank meant for providing water to the camels. He would swoon and the other people would also swoon, then Allah would send or He would cause to send rain which would be like dew and there would grow out of it the bodies of the people. Then the second trumpet would be blown and they would stand up and begin to look (around). Then it would be said: O people, go to your Lord, and make them stand there. And they would be questioned. Then it would be said: Bring out a group (out of them) for the Hell-Fire. And then it would be asked: How much? It would be said: Nine hundred and ninty-nine out of one thousand for the Hell-Fire and that would be the day which would make the children old because of its terror and that would be the day about which it has been said: "On the day when the shank would be uncovered" (lxviii. 42).

(the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar stood up and said, "By Allah! Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not dead!" 'Umar (later on) said, "By Allah! Nothing occurred to my mind except that." He said, "Verily! Allah will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men." Then Abu Bakr came and uncovered the face of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, kissed him and said, "Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you, (O Messenger of Allah ﷺ), you are good in life and in death. By Allah in Whose Hands my life is, Allah will never make you taste death twice." Then he went out and said, "O oath-taker! Don't be hasty." When Abu Bakr spoke, 'Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised and glorified Allah and said, No doubt! Whoever worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die." Then he recited Allah's Statement.:-- "(O Muhammad) Verily you will die, and they also will die." (39.30) He also recited:-- "Muhammad is no more than an Apostle; and indeed many Apostles have passed away, before him, If he dies Or is killed, will you then Turn back on your heels? And he who turns back On his heels, not the least Harm will he do to Allah And Allah will give reward to those Who are grateful." (3.144) The people wept loudly, and the Ansar were assembled with Sad bin 'Ubada in the shed of Bani Saida. They said (to the emigrants). "There should be one 'Amir from us and one from you." Then Abu Bakr, Umar bin Al-Khattab and Abu 'baida bin Al-Jarrah went to them. 'Umar wanted to speak but Abu Bakr stopped him. 'Umar later on used to say, "By Allah, I intended only to say something that appealed to me and I was afraid that Abu Bakr would not speak so well. Then Abu Bakr spoke and his speech was very eloquent. He said in his statement, "We are the rulers and you (Ansars) are the ministers (i.e. advisers)," Hubab bin Al-Mundhir said, "No, by Allah we won't accept this. But there must be a ruler from us and a ruler from you." Abu Bakr said, "No, we will be the rulers and you will be the ministers, for they (i.e. Quarish) are the best family amongst the 'Arabs and of best origin. So you should elect either 'Umar or Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as your ruler." 'Umar said (to Abu Bakr), "No but we elect you, for you are our chief and the best amongst us and the most beloved of all of us to Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So 'Umar took Abu Bakr's hand and gave the pledge of allegiance and the people too gave the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr. Someone said, "You have killed Sad bin Ubada." 'Umar said, "Allah has killed him."

bukhari:3039ʿAmr b. Khālid > Zuhayr > Abū Isḥāq > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib Yuḥaddith

The Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿAbdullah bin Jubair as the commander of the infantry men (archers) who were fifty on the day (of the battle) of Uhud. He instructed them, "Stick to your place, and don't leave it even if you see birds snatching us, till I send for you; and if you see that we have defeated the infidels and made them flee, even then you should not leave your place till I send for you." Then the infidels were defeated. By Allah, I saw the women fleeing lifting up their clothes revealing their leg-bangles and their legs. So, the companions of ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "The booty! O people, the booty ! Your companions have become victorious, what are you waiting for now?" ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "Have you forgotten what Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you?" They replied, "By Allah! We will go to the people (i.e. the enemy) and collect our share from the war booty." But when they went to them, they were forced to turn back defeated. At that time Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their rear was calling them back. Only twelve men remained with the Prophet ﷺ and the infidels martyred seventy men from us. On the day (of the battle) of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions had caused the 'Pagans to lose 140 men, seventy of whom were captured and seventy were killed. Then Abu Sufyan asked thrice, "Is Muhammad present amongst these people?" The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions not to answer him. Then he asked thrice, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa present amongst these people?" He asked again thrice, "Is the son of Al-Khattab present amongst these people?" He then returned to his companions and said, "As for these (men), they have been killed." ʿUmar could not control himself and said (to Abu Sufyan), "You told a lie, by Allah! O enemy of Allah! All those you have mentioned are alive, and the thing which will make you unhappy is still there." Abu Sufyan said, "Our victory today is a counterbalance to yours in the battle of Badr, and in war (the victory) is always undecided and is shared in turns by the belligerents, and you will find some of your (killed) men mutilated, but I did not urge my men to do so, yet I do not feel sorry for their deed" After that he started reciting cheerfully, "O Hubal, be high! (1) On that the Prophet ﷺ said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ What shall we say?" He said, "Say, Allah is Higher and more Sublime." (Then) Abu Sufyan said, "We have the (idol) Al ʿUzza, and you have no ʿUzza." The Prophet said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What shall we say?" He said, "Says Allah is our Helper and you have no helper."

[Machine] He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Antichrist will emerge during a period of confusion in religion and ignorance in knowledge. He will have forty nights that are equivalent to one year, one night equivalent to a month, and one night equivalent to a week. The rest of his days will be like your days. He will have a donkey on which he will ride, its ear to its ear measuring forty cubits. He will say to the people, 'I am your Lord,' even though he is blind in one eye. Indeed, your Lord is not one-eyed, and it is written between his eyes that he is a disbeliever (Kafir). Every believer will read it, literate or illiterate. There will not be any water or well left except for the cities of Madinah and Makkah, which Allah has made forbidden for him. The angels will stand guarding their gates, and with him will be mountains of bread. The people will be in great distress, except those who follow him. With him, there will be two rivers. I know which is Paradise and which is Hell. Whoever is entered into the one named Paradise will actually be in Hell, and whoever is entered into the one named Hell will actually be in Paradise." He said, "Allah will send devils with him, who will speak to the people. With him, there will be a great trial. He will command the sky, and it will rain upon the people, and he will kill a person, then bring him back to life before the people's eyes. He will not have control over any people other than his own. He will say, 'O people, why don't you come out to the deceitful liar?' They will say, 'This is a genie man,' and they will set out towards him. Suddenly, they will find themselves with Jesus, the son of Mary. The prayer will be established, and it will be said to him, 'Come forward, O Spirit of Allah.' He will reply, 'Let your Imam come forward and lead you in prayer.' After performing the morning prayer, they will go towards the Antichrist. When the Antichrist sees Jesus, he will start melting like salt in water, and he will try to flee from him. [Machine] On the authority of 'Amir, Abu 'Amir, or Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Gabriel came to him in a different form, appearing as a man from the Muslims. Gabriel greeted him and the Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting. Then Gabriel placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to submit your face to Allah, to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, to establish the prayer, give the obligatory charity (zakat)." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I become a Muslim?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is faith?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Divine Books, the prophets, life after death, heaven, hell, and fate, both its good and bad." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I believed?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is excellence (ihsan), O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then truly He sees you." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I excelled?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." And we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ return to him, but we could not see the one speaking to him, nor could we hear his words. The questioner asked, "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Glory be to Allah, it has five signs which only Allah knows: Allah possesses knowledge of the Hour, He sends down rain, He knows what is in the wombs, no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." (Surah Luqman, 34) The questioner then said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you wish, I can inform you of two signs that will precede it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Inform me." The questioner said, "When you see a slave woman giving birth to her mistress, and when you see the barefooted, naked, impoverished shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings." The questioner asked, "And who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Bedouins." Then he turned away, and when we did not see him on his way back, we said, "Glory be to Allah! This is Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion. The hand of Muhammad is in the hand of Gabriel, every time he came to him, I had not received any message except that I already knew it, except for this time."

[Machine] Narrated by 'Amir or Abu 'Amir, Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Jibril came to him in a form other than his usual shape and saluted him. The Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting and then Jibril placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He replied, "To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the Zakat, to perform Hajj, and to fast in Ramadan." Jibril then asked him, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Iman (faith)?" He replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in predestination and that every good and bad is from Allah." Jibril asked again, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Ihsan (perfection)?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion, then be aware that He sees you." Jibril continued to ask the Prophet ﷺ about the signs of the Day of Judgment until he asked, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "The one being asked does not know more than the one asking. But I will inform you of its signs. When you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings, that will be one of its signs. And when you see the hunched-backed, barefoot uncivilized Bedouins competing in building great structures, that will be one of its signs." Then he (Jibril) left. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent for a while and then said, "O Abu Huraira, did you mark or memorize everything?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, even I cannot memorize all this." Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ passed his hand over my chest and I felt its coolness in my chest, and I knew all that he had said.

42). He said: "They were setting up their camp when the monk was walking amidst them, until he came and took the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he said: 'This is the master of the men and jinn, this is the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds. Allah will raise him as a mercy to the men and jinn.' So some of the older people from the Quraish said: 'What do you know?' He said: 'When you people came along from the road, not a rock nor a tree was left, except that it prostrated, and they do not prostrate except for a Prophet. And I can recognize him by the seal of the Prophethood which is below his shoulder blade, like an apple.' Then he went back, and made them some food, and when he brought it to them, he [the Prophet ﷺ] was tending to the camels. So he said: 'Send for him.' So he came, and there was a cloud over him that was shading him. When he came close to the people, he found that they had beaten him to the tree's shade. So when he sat down, the shade of the tree leaned towards him. He (the monk) said: 'Look at the shade of the tree leaning towards him.'" He said: "So while he was standing over them, telling them not to take him to Rome with him - because if the Romans were to see him, they would recognize him by his description, and they would kill him - he turned, and there were seven people who had come from Rome. So he faced them and said: 'Why have you come?' They said: 'We came because this Prophet is going to appear during this month, and there isn't a road left except that people have been sent to it, and we have been informed of him, and we have been send to this road of yours.' So he said: 'Is there anyone better than you behind you?' They said: 'We only have news of him from this road of yours.' He said: 'Do you think that if there is a matter which Allah wishes to bring about, there is anyone among the people who can turn it away?' They said: 'No.'" He said: "So they gave him their pledge, and they stayed with him. And he said: 'I ask you by Allah, which of you is his guardian?' They said: 'Abu Talib.' So he kept adjuring him until Abu Talib returned him (back to Makkah) and he sent Abu Bakr and Bilal with him. And the monk gave him provisions of Ka'k (a type of bread) and olive oil." What is this hadith that you narrate that the Last Hour would come at such and such time? 42). [Machine] We spoke with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and we had a lengthy conversation. Then we returned to our homes, and when we woke up in the morning, we went to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "The prophets were presented to me last night, along with their followers from their nations. The Prophet came with three men from his people, and the Prophet came with a group and the Prophet came with a smaller group, and the Prophet came alone without anyone from his people. Until Musa ibn Imran came to me in a crowd of the children of Israel, and when I saw them, I was impressed, so I said, 'Lord, who are these?' He said, 'This is your brother Musa ibn Imran and his followers from the children of Israel.' I said, 'Lord, where is my nation?' It was said to me, 'Look to your right.' So I looked, and there was a black cloud approaching Makkah, with the faces of men turning black.' I said, 'Lord, who are these?' He said, 'These are your nation.' Then it was said to me, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'Lord, I am pleased.' Then it was said to me, 'With them, there are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without any accountability.' Then 'Ukkashah ibn Mihsan, the brother of Banu Asad, stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them.' He said, 'O Allah, make him one of them.' Then another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them.' He said, 'Ukkashah has already been granted that.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said, 'For you, my father and mother, if you can, strive to be among the seventy thousand. If you cannot, then strive to be among the people of the black cloud. If you cannot, then strive to be among the people on the horizon. Verily, I saw a people who were very much deluded.' Then the Prophet ﷺ recited the verse, 'A group [of the believers] from the earlier generations and a group from the later ones.' (Quran 56:40) The Muslims then started to speculate who these seventy thousand would be, and they said, 'We see them as people who were born into Islam and never cease to practice it until they die.' The narration of this hadith goes back to the Prophet ﷺ , who said, 'That is not the case, rather they are those who do not seek ruqya (charms or amulets), do not cauterize themselves, and do not believe in omens, but rather they put their trust in their Lord.'"

42). tabarani:21422ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Abū Nuʿaym

[Machine] I went with a man until we entered upon Fatimah bint Qays, the sister of Dihyah bin Qays. We said, "O Fatimah, tell us a narration that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She said, "Yes." So she gave us dates and water to drink. She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day and sat on the pulpit. The people surrounded him and took refuge with him. He said, 'O people, I have been made to sit here due to a piece of news.' She said, 'And it was not on the hour that he used to sit in. Tameem Ad-Dari entered upon me today during the migration or around Dhuhr time. He informed me that his cousins were thrown into a ship in the sea on an island that they do not know. So they went into it, walking, and they came across something that they did not recognize if it was a man or a woman, from what it was clothed with hair. So they said, 'Who are you?' It said, 'I am the Jassasah!' They said, 'Inform us.' It said, 'I do not inform you, nor do I ask you anything. But if you want the news, go to this monastery,' pointing to a monastery on the island, not far away. So we went on walking until we entered it and found a man who was bound with iron, large and heavy. His back was leaning against the side of a mountain. He said, 'Who are you?' We said, 'People from the Arabs.' He said, 'What did the unlettered Prophet ﷺ do?' We said, 'He has left.' He said, 'What did the date-palms of Bani Uman and Baysan do?' We said, 'They bear fruits and produce.' He said, 'What did the spring of Zughar do?' We said, 'It remains the same.' He said, 'What did the lake of Tabariyyah do?' We said, 'It is full.' He struck his hand upon his thigh and said, 'I have lost everything of the land except Makkah and Madinah.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Madinah will be shaken one, twice. No dajjal shall enter it. There is no spot in it that is not guarded by angels, except that they shall stand upon a rock, raising the sword.' And he pointed with his hand, 'And from the direction of Yemen is what?' We said, 'Whatever Allah wills.' Then he said, while pointing with his hand, 'And his shirt is close to thirty times the size from the direction of Iraq and it is not less than thirty times.'

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَالرَّسُولُ يَدْعُوكُمْ فِي أُخْرَاكُمْ} [آل عمران: 153]

nasai-kubra:11013Hilāl b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Ḥusayn b. ʿAyyāsh > Zuhayr > Abū Isḥāq > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib

What shall we say?" He said, "Says Allah is our Helper and you have no helper." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3039)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said, "The Dajjal will come out and Allah will send Jesus son of Mary, ﷺ , as if he were Urwah bin Mas'ood Ath-Thaqafi. He will seek him out and kill him, and then the people will live for nine years without any enmity between them. Then Allah will send a cool wind from the direction of Sham, which will not spare anyone with even an atom's weight of faith in their hearts. The wind will seize them until even if someone were in the depths of a mountain, it would reach them. I heard it from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . The worst of people will remain, light as birds and with the minds of beasts, not recognizing what is good or rejecting what is evil. The devil will appear to them and command them to worship idols, and they will do so. Their sustenance will be good during that time, but then a blast will be blown in the trumpet and no one will be left except that they will be struck. Then Allah will send rain, from which the bodies of the people will grow. Another blast will be blown, and they will rise, looking around. Then it will be said, 'O people, come to your Lord,' and they will stand. Then it will be said, 'Drive out the people of the Fire,' and it will be asked, 'How many are they?' It will be said, 'Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every one thousand.' On that day, the children will become grey-haired. And on that day, 'The covering of shame will be removed from the leg.' Muhammad bin Ja'far said, "Shu'bah narrated to me this hadith from An-Nu'man bin Salim, and I presented it to him."

[Machine] I saw Umar ibn Al-Khattab before he was struck by the days in Medina. He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."
