59. Book of Virtues of the Companions (1/13)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw as if I was given a cup filled with milk, so I drank from it until I was full. Then I saw it flowing in my veins, between the skin and the flesh, and there was a surplus from it. So, I gave it to Abu Bakr." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this knowledge that Allah has given you until you were full and there was a surplus that you gave to Abu Bakr?" He ﷺ said, "You have guessed correctly."
" Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said: Behold I am free from the dependence of all bosom friends and if I were to choose anyone as bosom friend I would have taken Abu Bakr as my bosom friend. Allah has taken your companion as a friend. (Using translation from Muslim 2383e)
If I were to choose a bosom friend I would have definitely chosen Abu Bakr as my bosom friend, but he is my brother and my companion and Allah, the Exalted and Gliorious. has taken your brother and companion (meaning Prophet himself) as a friend. (Using translation from Muslim 2383a)
[Machine] "And the Prophet ﷺ commanded the closing of the doors of the streets in the mosque, except for the door of Abu Bakr."
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'The wealth of none of you has benefited me as much as the wealth of Abu Bakr.'" Abu Bakr wept and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I and my wealth are only for you, O Messenger of Allah.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 94)
[Machine] "Abu Bakr spent forty thousand on the Messenger of Allah."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ went out during the illness in which he passed away, with a band around his head. He then sat on the pulpit and praised Allah and praised Him. He then said, "There is no one among the people who has not been entrusted with himself and his wealth except for Abu Bakr. If I were to take a close friend from the people, I would have taken Abu Bakr. But the companionship of Islam prevented me from anything other than the companionship of Abu Bakr in the mosque, except for the companionship of Abu Bakr."
that Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on the pulpit and said, "Allah gave a choice to a servant that he may opt for the beauties of the world or that which is with Him. And the servant chose that which was with Him." Thereupon Abū Bakr wept and he wept a lot and said: "Let our fathers and our mothers be taken as ransom for you." It was Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had been given the choice, and Abū Bakr knew it better than us.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said, "Behold, of all people the most generous toward me in regard to his companionship and his property was Abū Bakr. Were I to choose anyone as my khalīl (close friend), I would have chosen Abū Bakr as my khalīl, but ˹for him I cherish˺ Islamic brotherhood. There shall be left open no window ˹facing˺ Masjid ˹al-Nabawī˺ except Abū Bakr's window." (Using translation from Muslim 2382a)
"Abu Bakr is our chief, and the best of us, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3656)
that Abu Bakr said: "Am I not the most deserving of it among the people, am I not the first to become Muslim, am I not the person of such and such, am I not the person of such and such." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3667)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "You are freed by Allah from the Hellfire." Therefore, he was called "Ateeq" (meaning freed or emancipated).
The prophet of Allah ﷺ ascended Uhud, and Abu Bakr, ’Umar and 'Uthman followed him. It began to shake with them. The prophet of Allah ﷺ struck it with his foot and said: Be still, for only a prophet, an ever-truthful and two martyrs are on you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4651)
"Whoever spends on a pair (of things) in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, he will be called in Paradise: 'O slave of Allah, here is prosperity, Whoever is one of the people of Salah, he will be called from the gate of salah. Whoever is on of the people of charity, he will be called from the gate of Ar-Rayyan.' Abu Bakr As-Siddiq said: 'O Messenger of Allah, no distress or need will befall the one who is called from those gates. Will there be anyone who will be called from all these gates?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Yes, and I hope that you will be one of them."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2238)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man will enter Paradise and no inhabitant of a house or room will remain except that they will say, 'Welcome, welcome to us.'" Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you see for this man on that day?" He said, "Certainly, and you are that man, O Abu Bakr."
[Machine] I have never seen my parents without them practicing their faith, and not a day would pass without the messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, in the morning and evening. When the Muslims were tested, Abu Bakr migrated before the Abyssinian land. When he reached Bark al-Ghimad, he was met by Ibn al-Daghinah, who was the ruler of the region. He asked, "Where are you going, O Abu Bakr?" Abu Bakr replied, "My people have forced me out, and I intend to travel in the land and worship my Lord." Ibn al-Daghinah said, "People like you, O Abu Bakr, do not leave nor are they forced to leave. You earn what is lost, maintain family ties, carry the load for others, honor guests, help those in need, and assist in matters of truth. I am your neighbor, so return and worship your Lord in your own land." Ibn al-Daghinah then left and Abu Bakr returned with him. Ibn al-Daghinah then went around the disbelievers of Quraish and said, "Abu Bakr is not like anyone of you. You are expelling a man who earns what is lost, maintains family ties, carries the load for others, honors guests, and helps in matters of truth." The people of Quraish then surrounded Ibn al-Daghinah and granted protection to Abu Bakr. They told Ibn al-Daghinah, "Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord in his own home as he pleases, to perform prayer as he pleases, to recite the Quran as he pleases, and to not harm us or cause disturbance by praying or reciting in a place other than his own home." And he did so.
[Machine] I said to the Prophet ﷺ , "If one of them were to look beneath his feet, we would see what is beneath his feet." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "What do you think of two, with Allah as their third?"
[Machine] I heard Al-Bara' saying, Abu Bakr bought a camel from a bachelor for thirteen dirhams. Abu Bakr said to Al-Bara', "Take it to my family." The bachelor said to him, "Before you leave, tell me how you and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ managed when you both left Mecca and the pagans were looking for you." Abu Bakr said, "We left Mecca and hid in a cave, spending the night until we appeared during the day. We took shelter under a rock until midday when the shade disappeared. I leveled the ground for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and made a makeshift bed for him. Then I told him, 'Lie down, O Messenger of Allah,' and he lay down. I went out to see if anyone was searching for us. I saw a shepherd driving his sheep towards the rock, seeking shade just like we wanted. So, I asked him, 'Who do you belong to, O boy?' He replied, 'To so-and-so, a man from Quraysh.' I recognized him and asked, 'Do your sheep produce milk?' He answered, 'Yes.' I then asked, 'Are you able to milk the sheep for me?' He answered, 'Yes.' I instructed him to take a sheep from his flock and remove the dust from it. Then, I told him to rub his hands together and he did so. He struck one hand against the other and began milking the sheep into a container. I had with me a piece of cloth which I used to cover the mouth of the container until it cooled down."

[Machine] That a woman came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking him for something, and he said to her, "Go back to me." She said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, if I go back and do not find you alive, then who should I turn to?" He ﷺ said, "If you do not find me, turn to Abu Bakr."

She said: "I said: '0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man, and when he stands in your place he will not be able to make the people hear his voice; why don't you tell 'Umar (to do it)?' He said: 'Tell a Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer.' I said to Hafsah: 'Tell him.' So she told him. He said: 'You are (like) the female companions of Yosuf. Tell Abu Bakr lead the people in prayer."' She said: "So they told Abu Bakr. When he started to pray, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to feel better, so he got up and came with the help of two men, with his feet dragging along the ground. (When) he entered the Masjid, Abu Bakr heard him coming and he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him: 'Stay where you are.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat on Abu Bakr's left, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leading the people in prayer sitting, and Abu Bakr was standing and following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him." [Machine] When it was Monday, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ removed the curtain of the room and saw Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq praying with the people. He said, "I looked at his face, and it was as if it was a page of the Quran, and he was smiling. We almost got distracted in our prayers out of joy of seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Bakr intended to move, but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, he stayed in his place. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened the curtain and performed his prayer. On the same day, he passed away. Umar ibn Al-Khattab stood up and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not die, but he was sent to him as Moses was sent to him, and he resided among his people for forty nights. By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will live until he cuts off the hands of men from the hypocrites and silences their tongues, who claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died." Al-Zuhri reported that Anas ibn Malik informed him that he heard the speech of Umar ibn Al-Khattab about the Hereafter when he sat on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day after his death. Umar and Abu Bakr were quiet and did not speak, then Umar said, "As for the yesterday's statement, it was not as I said, and by Allah, I did not find the statement that I said in a book revealed by Allah or in a covenant given to me by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would live until he settles our affairs. If Muhammad ﷺ has indeed died, then Allah has placed among you a light, by which you will be guided. Hold fast to it, and be guided by what Allah has guided Muhammad ﷺ to. And indeed, Abu Bakr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , is the second of the two. And he is the most deserving among you of your affairs. So pledge allegiance to him. And indeed, a group of them had already pledged allegiance to him in Saqifah Bani Sa'idah. And the pledge of the common people was on the pulpit."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you continue to follow them until no one is left with me, the valley will ask you for fire."

While I was asleep I saw (in a dream) a cup containing milk being presented to me. I took out of that until I perceived freshness being reflected through my nails. Then I presented the leftover to 'Umar b. Khattab. They said: Messenger of Allah: How do you interpret it? He said: This implies knowledge. (Using translation from Muslim 2391a)

[Machine] By Allah, no word was mentioned to him until he stood up intently towards the Mosque and called out the people of Quraysh. He said, "O people of Quraysh, indeed the son of Al-Khattab has taken over." Umar said, "He lied, but indeed I have embraced Islam, believed in Allah, and affirmed His Messenger." Then they confronted him and fought with him until the sun set on their heads. Umar got injured and sat down. They stood over his head, and Umar said, "Do whatever seems best to you. By Allah, if we were three hundred men, you would not have escaped us, or we would have not left it to you." While they were in that situation, a man came wearing a silk robe and a Qumiss garment. He asked, "What is happening?" They said, "Indeed the son of Al-Khattab has taken over." He said, "It seems as if a garment has been removed from him." Then I said to him later in Medina, "Father, who was the man who defended you that day?" He said, "O my son, that was Tha'alib bin Wail."

"We were sitting with the Prophet and he said: 'While I was sleeping I saw myself in Paradise (in a dream), and I saw a woman performing ablution beside a palace. I asked: "Whose palace is this?" She said: "'Umar's." I remembered his protective jealousy, so I turned away and left.'" Abu Hurairah said: ''Umar wept and said: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Would I feel any protective jealousy against you?'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 107)

[Machine] He was stabbed, so he said, "Rejoice, O Amir al-Mu'minin, you embraced Islam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the people disbelieved, and you fought alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the people abandoned him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while he was pleased with you, and there were no disputes regarding your leadership, and you were martyred." So he said, "Speak again." So he repeated it and said, "The one deceived is the one you have deceived. Had it not been for what she possesses of whiteness and yellowness on her back, I would have accepted it in exchange for the horror of the early morning."

[Machine] He said, Umar bin Al-Khattab entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while there were women from the Quraysh speaking to him and raising their voices. When they heard Umar's voice, they stopped talking and remained silent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "O Umayyad women, they frighten me but do not frighten the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Umar, "O Umar, whenever Satan finds a path, except your path, he takes it."

I agreed with my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, in three matters - or my Lord agreed with me in three matters, I said: O Messenger of Allah, why don't you take the Maqarn of Ibraheem as a place of prayer? Then Allah revealed the verse: ʿAnd take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibraheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibraheem (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka'bah) as a place of prayerʿ (al Baqarah 2:125). And I said: Why don't you tell the Mothers of the Believers to observe hijab, for both righteous people and evildoers enter upon you? Then the verse of hijab was revealed. And I heard something about the Mothers of the Believers, so I talked to them and told them: You should stop bothering the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , or Allah will replace you with wives who are better than you and are Muslims. Then I came to one of the Mothers of the Believers and she said: O 'Umar, is it the case that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cannot admonish his wives so that you come and admonish them? So I stopped, then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, revealed the verse: “It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah), believers, obedient (to Allah)...ʿ [at-Tahreerm 66:5) (Using translation from Aḥmad 160)

While I was asleep I saw myself on a well with a leathern bucket on a pulley. I drew (water) out of that as Allah wished me (to draw). Then the son of Abu Quhafa (Abu Bakr) drew from it one bucketful or two and there was some weakness in drawing that (may Allah forgive him). Then that bucket (changed into a large bucket) and Ibn Khattab drew it. I did not see any strongest man drawing it like 'Umar b. Khattab. He brought out so much water that the camels of the people had enough to drink and then laid down (for rest). (Using translation from Muslim 2392a)
