He then stood near a price of wood in front of the Mosque and put his hand over it. Abu Bakr and ʿUmar were amongst those who were present, but they dared not talk to him about that (because of excessive respect for him), and those who were in a hurry went out. They said, "Has the prayer been reduced?" A man who was called Dhul-Yadain by the Prophet ﷺ said (to the Prophet), "Has the prayer been reduced or have you forgotten?" He said, "Neither have I forgotten, nor has the prayer been reduced." He said, "Certainly you have forgotten." So the Prophet ﷺ offered two more rakʿat and performed Taslim and then said Takbir and performed a prostration of Sahu like his ordinary prostration or a bit longer and then raised his head and said Takbir and then put his head down and performed a prostration like his ordinary prostration or a bit longer, and then raised his head and said Takbir.
The Prophet ﷺ led us in the Zuhr prayer, offering only two rakʿat and then (finished it) with Taslim, and went to a piece of wood in front of the mosque and put his hand over it. Abu Bakr and ʿUmar were also present among the people on that day but dared not talk to him (about his unfinished prayer). And the hasty people went away, wondering. "Has the prayer been shortened" Among the people there was a man whom the Prophet ﷺ used to call Dhul-Yadain (the longarmed). He said, "O Allah's Prophet! Have you forgotten or has the prayer been shortened?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Neither have I forgotten, nor has it been shortened." They (the people) said, "Surely, you have forgotten, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said, Dhul-Yadain has told the truth." So the Prophet ﷺ got up and offered other two rakʿat and finished his prayer with Taslim. Then he said Takbir, performed a prostration of ordinary duration or longer, then he raised his head and said Takbir and performed another prostration of ordinary duration or longer and then raised his head and said Takbir (i.e. he performed the two prostrations of Sahu, i.e., forgetfulness).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two evening prayers, Zuhr or ʿAsr, and gave salutations after two rakʿahs and going towards a piece of wood which was placed to the direction of the Qibla in the mosque, leaned on it looking as if he were angry. Abu Bakr and ʿUmar were among the people and they were too afraid to speak to him and the people came out in haste (saying): The prayer has been shortened. But among them was a man called Dhul-Yadain who said: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten? The Apostle of Allah ﷺ looked to the right and left and said: What was Dhul-Yadain saying? They said: He is right. You (the Holy Prophet) offered but two rakʿahs. He offered two (more) rakʿahs and gave salutation, then said takbir and prostrated and lifted (his head) and then said takbir and prostrated, then said takbir and lifted (his head). He (the narrator) says: It has been reported to me by ʿImran b. Husain that he said: He (then) gave salutation.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed one of the evening prayers, then he performed two additional units of prayer, and then he said the salaam and stood on a wooden platform inside the mosque. He placed his hand on it, and said, "Yazeed and Ibn Awun showed us this." He placed one hand on the other, with the upper hand on the lower one and entered his upper fingers into the lower fingers, pressing them together, and he stood as if he was angry. Immediately, some people left and began saying, "The prayer has been shortened, the prayer has been shortened." Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they did not speak. Among the people, there was a tall man with long arms named Dhu al-Yadayn (the one with two hands), who said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you forget the prayer or was it shortened?" He ﷺ said, "I did not forget, nor was the prayer shortened." He said, "Is it like that?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then he returned and completed what remained, then said the salaam and pronounced the takbeer. He prostrated for a long time, then raised his head and pronounced the takbeer, and prostrated again as he did the first time, then raised his head and left."

[AI] Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I offered two Rak'ahs of the 'Isha prayer just before dawn and I assumed that it was the Fajr prayer. Then I offered two Rak'ahs, sat near a pillar and became angry. Sufyan added: Then he (the Messenger of Allah) came to the trunk of a date-palm tree and offered two Rak'ahs so as to make up the missed ones and then asked for permission to enter the house and smiled. Aisha said: "The wives of the Prophet ﷺ laughed till the veil of my lady-partition (screen) shook with laughter."

[AI] While I was praying the Dhuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished two rak'ahs and a man from the Banu Sulaym stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did the prayer become shorter or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prayer was not shortened and I did not forget." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have only prayed two rak'ahs." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What does the one with two hands have to say?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then he stood up and prayed two more rak'ahs with them." Yahya narrated to me that Damdam ibn Jawz said that he heard Abu Hurairah say, "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated two sujood."

[AI] From the hadith of Dhu Al-Yadayn, I approached him and asked him about it. He turned out to be an elderly sheikh who did not adhere to the limitations of old age in terms of narrating hadiths. Then his son, Shuayth, said, "Indeed, my father informed me that Dhu Al-Yadayn met you while you were carrying firewood. He told you that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , performed two rak'ahs of the Isha prayer with them, then he performed the Asr prayer. Then he said the salaam and quickly left. People hurriedly followed him and said, 'Did the prayer become shorter?' Amongst them were Abu Bakr and Umar. Dhu Al-Yadayn said, 'Did the prayer become shorter or did you forget?' They replied, 'The prayer did not become shorter, and we did not forget.' Then he approached Abu Bakr and Umar and asked them, 'What did Dhu Al-Yadayn say?' Yahya related to me from Malik from Da'ud ibn al-Husayn that Abu Sufyan, the mawla of Ibn Abi Ahmad, said that he heard Abu Hurayra say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed asr and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'l-Yadayn stood up and said, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed what remained of the prayer, and then, remaining sitting after saying the taslim, he made two prostrations."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathma said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakas of one of the two day-ti me prayers, dhuhr or asr, and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'sh-Shamalayn said to him, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The prayer has not been shortened and I have not forgotten.' Dhu'shShamalayn said, 'It was certainly one of those, Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached the people and said, 'Has Dh u'sh-Shamalayn spoken the truth?' They said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah,' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed what remained of the prayer, and then said, 'Peace be upon you.' "

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the evening (‘Asha) prayers, noon or afternoon. He led us in two Rak’ahs and gave the salutation. He then got up going towards a piece of wood which was placed in the front part of the mosque. He placed his hands upon it, one on the other, looking from his face as if he were angry. The people came out hastily saying: the prayer has been shortened. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar were among the people, but they were too afraid to speak to him. A man whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would call “ the possessor of arms” (Dhu al-Yadain) stood up (asking him): Have you forgotten. The Messenger of Allah, or has the prayer been shortened? He said: I have neither forgotten nor has it been shortened. He said : Messenger of Allah , you have forgotten. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards the people and asked : did the possessor of arms speak the truth? They made a sign , that is, yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his place and prayed the remaining two Rak’ahs, then gave the salutation; he then uttered the takbir and prostrated himself as usual or prolonged. He then raised his head and uttered the takbir; then he uttered the takbir and made prostration as usual or made longer (prostration). Then he raised his head his and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great). The narrator Muhammad was asked : Did he give the salutation (while prostrating) dueto forgetfulness? He said : I do not remember it from Abu Hurairah. But we Are sure that ‘Imran b. Husain (in his version) said; he then gave the salutation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1008)

[AI] From his father, Matir and Mutair, who were present, and he believed him in his statement, he said, "How did I inform you?" He said, "O my father, you informed me that the one with two hands made of wood met you and informed you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two units of the evening prayer, which is the Asr prayer, then he completed them and left quickly while the people were saying that the prayer was shortened. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) followed him. The one with two hands caught up with him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or did you forget?' He said, 'I did not shorten the prayer and I did not forget.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, 'What does the one with two hands say?' They said, 'He speaks the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and the people praised him, then he prayed two units of prayer, then he completed them, then he performed the prostrations of forgetfulness."

[AI] While I was praying the Dhuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished two units of prayer and stood up. Then, a man from the tribe of Sulaym stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not shorten it nor did I forget." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two units." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What does the man with two hands say?" They replied, "Yes." So, he stood up and prayed two units of prayer with them.

He ﷺ said, "The prayer did not become shorter and I did not forget." They asked, "What does Dhul-Yadayn say?" They said, "He told the truth." So he ﷺ prayed two units of prayer with them.
