The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the 'Asr prayer and gave salutation after two rak'ahs. Dhu'l-Yadain (the possessor of long arms) stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Nothing like this has happened (neither the prayer has been shortened nor have I forgotten). He (Dhu'l-Yadain) said: Messenger of Allah, something has definitely happened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards people and said: Is Dhu'l-Yadain true (in his assertion)? They said: Messenger of Allah, he is true. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed the rest of the prayer. and then performed two prostrations while he was sitting after salutation.  

أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ صَلَّى لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ  

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in praying 'Asr, and he said the salam after two rak'ahs. Dhul-Yadain stood up and said: 'Has the prayer been shortened, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ or did you forget?' Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathma said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakas of one of the two day-ti me prayers, dhuhr or asr, and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'sh-Shamalayn said to him, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The prayer has not been shortened and I have not forgotten.' Dhu'shShamalayn said, 'It was certainly one of those, Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached the people and said, 'Has Dh u'sh-Shamalayn spoken the truth?' They said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah,' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed what remained of the prayer, and then said, 'Peace be upon you.' "

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Dhuhr or Asr prayer, and then he performed the tasleem after two units of one of them. Zul-Shimalayn ibn 'Abd Amr ibn Nadlah al-Khuzai, who was an ally of the Banu Zuhrah and shorter than others, said to him, "Did you shorten the prayer, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not forget nor did I shorten." Then Zul-Shimalayn said, "Some of us saw you doing so, O Messenger of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and said, "Who do you believe, the one with two hands?" They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed the prayer, and no one among them informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two prostrations while sitting in that prayer. And this is what is witnessed, and Allah knows best, as people were content with the certainty of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they were certain.  

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ أَوِ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ إِحْدَاهُمَا فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نَضْلَةَ الْخُزَاعِيُّ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي زُهْرَةَ أَقُصِرَتْ أَمْ نَسِيتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَمْ أَنْسَ وَلَمْ تُقْصَرْ» فَقَالَ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْنِي أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي تِلْكَ الصَّلَاةِ وَذَلِكَ فِيمَا يُرَى وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنَّ النَّاسَ يَقَّنُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى اسْتَيْقَنَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Dhuhr or Asr prayer for us and then performed the greeting (salam) in two units (rak'ahs) of one of them. So, Zul-Shimalain bin 'Abd Amr bin Nadlah al-Khuzai, an ally of Banu Zahrah, asked him, "Did the prayer become shortened or did you forget, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not forget nor did I shorten it." So, Zul-Shimalain said, "Some of it was done like that, O Messenger of Allah." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and said, "Zul-Yadayn (meaning Zul-Shimalain) has spoken the truth." They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed the prayer.

[Machine] Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allahﷺ led us in one of the night prayer rak'ahs and he did not pray with us except for two rak'ahs. So, a man named Dhu al-Yadayn from Khuzayah said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "None of that was the case." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two rak'ahs with us." The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "What does Dhu al-Yadayn say?" Then he turned to the people and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two rak'ahs with us." So, the Prophetﷺ stood up, faced the qibla, and prayed the remaining two rak'ahs. Then he performed tashahhud, prostrated twice while sitting.  

لِي أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِحْدَى صَلَاتَيِ الْعَشِيِّ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ بِنَا إِلَّا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ مِنْ خُزَاعَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ «كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ بِنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ » وَأَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمْ تُصَلِّ بِنَا إِلَّا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَصَلَّى الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْبَاقِيَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ

[Machine] While I was praying the Dhuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished two units of prayer and stood up. Then, a man from the tribe of Sulaym stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not shorten it nor did I forget." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two units." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What does the man with two hands say?" They replied, "Yes." So, he stood up and prayed two units of prayer with them.  

بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ فَسَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَمْ تُقْصَرْ وَلَمْ أَنَسَ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَحَقٌّ مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ كَانَ قَبْلُ ذَلِكَ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ وَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ السَّلَامِ  

[Machine] I heard Abu Huraira saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the 'Asr prayer and then concluded it with two prostrations. Then, he stood up and said, "Did the prayer become shortened or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "All of that did not happen." He then said, "Some of that has happened, O Messenger of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards the people and asked, "Did both hands speak the truth?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed the remaining part of the prayer, then made two prostrations after the Salam while he was sitting. He narrated the Hadith of Qutaybah, but did not mention the statement of Al-Shafi'i that says, "All of that did not happen." He then said, "Then he made two prostrations while he was sitting after the Salam."  

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ صَلَّى لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ السَّلَامِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ قُتَيْبَةَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الشَّافِعِيُّ قَوْلَهُ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ وَقَالَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two units of Dhuhr or Asr prayer. The man with two hands said to him, "Did you shorten the prayer, O Messenger of Allah, or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "What does the man with two hands say?" They said, "Yes." So, he prayed two additional units, then prostrated for the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Sa'd said, "I saw Urwah ibn Zubayr praying two units after Maghrib and then speaking, then he prayed what was left." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same.  

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الظُّهْرَ أَوِ الْعَصْرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَوْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِأَصْحَابِهِ أَحَقٌّ مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ أُخْرَيَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ قَالَ سَعْدٌ وَرَأَيْتُ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ صَلَّى مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَكَلَّمَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى مَا بَقِيَ فَقَالَ هَكَذَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

"صَلَّى رسولُ الله ﷺ صَلَاةَ العَصْرِ فَسَلَّم مِنْ ركْعَتَين، فَقَامَ ذُو اليَدَينِ فَقَالَ: أَقَصَرتِ الصَّلاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فقالَ النبيُّ ﷺ كَلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ، قَالَ: قَدْ

كَانَ بعضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ الله! فَأَقْبَلَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ (*) ذَو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ فَقَالُواْ: نَعَمْ، فَأَتَمَّ النبىُّ ﷺ مَا بَقِىَ مِن الصَّلَاةِ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَينِ وَهُوَ جَالسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ".
