[Machine] From his father, Matir and Mutair, who were present, and he believed him in his statement, he said, "How did I inform you?" He said, "O my father, you informed me that the one with two hands made of wood met you and informed you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two units of the evening prayer, which is the Asr prayer, then he completed them and left quickly while the people were saying that the prayer was shortened. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) followed him. The one with two hands caught up with him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or did you forget?' He said, 'I did not shorten the prayer and I did not forget.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, 'What does the one with two hands say?' They said, 'He speaks the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and the people praised him, then he prayed two units of prayer, then he completed them, then he performed the prostrations of forgetfulness."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two evening prayers, Zuhr or ʿAsr, and gave salutations after two rakʿahs and going towards a piece of wood which was placed to the direction of the Qibla in the mosque, leaned on it looking as if he were angry. Abu Bakr and ʿUmar were among the people and they were too afraid to speak to him and the people came out in haste (saying): The prayer has been shortened. But among them was a man called Dhul-Yadain who said: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten? The Apostle of Allah ﷺ looked to the right and left and said: What was Dhul-Yadain saying? They said: He is right. You (the Holy Prophet) offered but two rakʿahs. He offered two (more) rakʿahs and gave salutation, then said takbir and prostrated and lifted (his head) and then said takbir and prostrated, then said takbir and lifted (his head). He (the narrator) says: It has been reported to me by ʿImran b. Husain that he said: He (then) gave salutation.

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the afternoon prayers, and he prayed two Rak’ah, then he said the Salam. Then he stood up and went to a piece of wood in the mosque, and leaned against it. Those who were in a hurry left the mosque, saying that the prayer had been shortened. Among the people were Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, but they dared not say anything. Among the people there was also a man with long hands who was called Dhul- Yadain. He said, "O my father, you informed me that you met the man with two wooden hands, so you informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two units of prayer with them during one of the evening prayers, and it was Asr prayer. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and Abu Bakr and Umar followed him, and they were both his first followers. Then, the man with two wooden hands caught up with him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the prayer was shortened, the prayer was shortened, or did you forget?' So, he said, 'The prayer was not shortened, and I did not forget.' Then, he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar and said, 'What does the man with two wooden hands say?' They said, 'He is speaking the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and the people were pleased, so he prayed two units of prayer, then he made the greeting (salam), then he prostrated for the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Abu Sulaiman said, 'I narrated this for six or seven years, then I made the greeting (salam), and I doubted it, while it was my most memorized (hadith).'"

[Machine] From the hadith of Dhu Al-Yadayn, I approached him and asked him about it. He turned out to be an elderly sheikh who did not adhere to the limitations of old age in terms of narrating hadiths. Then his son, Shuayth, said, "Indeed, my father informed me that Dhu Al-Yadayn met you while you were carrying firewood. He told you that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , performed two rak'ahs of the Isha prayer with them, then he performed the Asr prayer. Then he said the salaam and quickly left. People hurriedly followed him and said, 'Did the prayer become shorter?' Amongst them were Abu Bakr and Umar. Dhu Al-Yadayn said, 'Did the prayer become shorter or did you forget?' They replied, 'The prayer did not become shorter, and we did not forget.' Then he approached Abu Bakr and Umar and asked them, 'What did Dhu Al-Yadayn say?' They replied, 'You spoke the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , returned, and the people were pleased, and he performed two rak'ahs with them, then said the salaam, and then performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards the people and asked : did the possessor of arms speak the truth? They made a sign , that is, yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his place and prayed the remaining two Rak’ahs, then gave the salutation; he then uttered the takbir and prostrated himself as usual or prolonged. He then raised his head and uttered the takbir; then he uttered the takbir and made prostration as usual or made longer (prostration). Then he raised his head his and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great). The narrator Muhammad was asked : Did he give the salutation (while prostrating) dueto forgetfulness? He said : I do not remember it from Abu Hurairah. But we Are sure that ‘Imran b. Husain (in his version) said; he then gave the salutation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1008)

Also among the people was a man with long hands who was known as Dhul-Yadain. He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, did you forget or has the prayer been shortened? He said: I did not forget and the prayer has not been shortened. He said: Is it as Dhul-Yadain says? They said: yes. So he came and prayed what he had missed, then he said the salam, then he said the takbir and prostrated as usual or longer than that. Then he raised his head and said the takbir, and prostrated as usual or longer than that. Then he raised his head and said the takbir.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1224)
