Collected by Muslim, Tirmidhī, Aḥmad, Ḥākim, Ibn Ḥibbān, Bazzār, Ṭabarānī, Bayhaqī, Aḥmad's Zuhd, SuyūṭīVerily the Messenger of Allah said: The last to enter Paradise would be a man who would walk once and stumble once and be burnt by the Fire once. Then when he gets beyond it, he will turn to it and say: Blessed is He Who has saved me from thee. Allah has given me something He has not given to any one of those in earlier or later times. Then a tree would be raised up for him and he will say: O my Lord I bring me near this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Allah, the Exalted and Great, would say: O son of Adam, if I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else. He would say: No. my Lord. And he would promise Him that he would not ask for anything else. His Lord would excuse him because He sees what he cannot help desiring; so He would bring him near it, and he would take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Afterwards a tree more beautiful than the first would be raised up before him and he would say: O my Lord! bring me near this tree in order that I may drink of its water and take shelter in its shade and I shall not ask Thee for anything else. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam, if I bring you near it you may ask me for something else. He would promise Him that he would not ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because He would see something he cannot help desiring. So He would bring him near it and he would enjoy its shade and drink its water. Then a tree would be raised up for him at the gate of the Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He would say: O my Lord! bring me near this (tree) so that I may enjoy its shade and drink from its water. I shall not ask Thee for anything else. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam! did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me anything else? He would say: Yes, my Lord, but I shall not ask Thee for anything else. His Lord would excuse him for He sees something the temptation of which he could not resist. He (Allah) would bring him near to it, and when He would bring him near it he would hear the voices of the inhabitants of the Paradise. He would say: O my Lord! admit me to it. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam, what will bring an end to your requests to Me? Will it please you if I give you the whole world and a like one along with it? He will say: O my Lord! art Thou mocking at me, though Thou art the Lord of the worlds? Ibn Mas'ud laughed and asked (the hearers): Why don't you ask me what I am laughing at. They (then) said: Why do you laugh? He said: It is in this way that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed. They (the companions of the Holy Prophet) asked: Why do you laugh. Messenger of Allah? He said: On account of the laugh of the Lord of the universe, when he ldesirer of Paradise) sai Thou mocking at me though Thou art the Lord of the worlds? He would say: I am not mocking at you, but I have power to do whatever I will.

What is this hadith that you narrate that the Last Hour would come at such and such time? Thereupon he said: Hallowed be Allah, there is no god but Allah (or the words to the same effect). I have decided that I would not narrate anything to anyone now. I had only said that you would see after some time an important event that the (sacred) House (Ka'ba) would be burnt and it would happen and definitely happen. He then reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Dajjal would appear in my Ummah and he would stay (in the world) for forty - I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years. And Allah would then send Jesus son of Mary who would resemble 'Urwa b Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) would chase him and kill him. Then people would live for seven years that there would be no rancour between two persons. Then Allah would send cold wind from the side of Syria that none would survive upon the earth having a speck of good in him or faith in him but he would die, so much so that even if some amongst you were to enter the innermost part of the mountain, this wind would reach that place also and that would cause his death. I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Only the wicked people would survive and they would be as careless as birds with the characteristics of beasts. They would never appreciate the good nor condemn evil. Then Satan would come to them in human form and would say: Don't you respond? And they would say: What do you order us? And he would command them to worship the idols but, in spite of this, they would have abundance of sustenance and lead comfortable lives. Then the trumpet would be blown and no one would hear that but he would bend his neck to one side and raise it from the other side and the first one to hear that trumpet would be the person who would be busy in setting right the tank meant for providing water to the camels. He would swoon and the other people would also swoon, then Allah would send or He would cause to send rain which would be like dew and there would grow out of it the bodies of the people. Then the second trumpet would be blown and they would stand up and begin to look (around). Then it would be said: O people, go to your Lord, and make them stand there. And they would be questioned. Then it would be said: Bring out a group (out of them) for the Hell-Fire. And then it would be asked: How much? It would be said: Nine hundred and ninty-nine out of one thousand for the Hell-Fire and that would be the day which would make the children old because of its terror and that would be the day about which it has been said: "On the day when the shank would be uncovered" (lxviii. 42).

“When Allah created Adam, He breathed the soul into him, then he sneezed and said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ So he praised Allah by His permission. Then His Lord said to him: ‘May Allah have mercy upon you O Adam. Go to those angels – to that gathering of them sitting – so say: 'As-Salamu alaikum.' They said 'Wa Alaikas-Salamu Wa Rahmatullah’. Then he returned to his Lord, He said: ‘This is your greeting and the greeting of your children among each other.’ Then Allah said to him – while His Two Hands were closed – ‘Choose which of them you wish.’ He said: ‘I chose the right My Lord and both of the Hands of my Lord are right, blessed.’ Then He extended it, and there was Adam and his offspring in it.’ So he said: ‘What are these O my Lord?’ He said: ‘These are your offspring?’ Each one of them had his age written between his eyes. But among them there was a man who was the most illuminating of them – or among the most illuminated of them. He said: ‘O Lord! Who is this?’ He said: ‘This is your son Dawud, I wrote forty years for him.’ He said: ‘O Lord! Add to his age.’ He said: ‘That is what I have written for him.’ He said: ‘O Lord! Give him sixty of my years.’ He said: ‘So you shall have it.’” He said: “Then, he resided in Paradise as long as Allah willed, then he was cast from it, so Adam was counting for himself.” He said: “So the Angel of death came to him, and Adam said to him: ‘You are hasty, one-thousand years were written for me.’ He said: ‘Of course! But you gave sixty years to your son Dawud.’ So he rejected, and his offspring rejected, and he forgot, and his offspring forgot.” He said: “So ever since that day, what is written and witnessed has been decreed.”

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Verily, the last person to enter Jannah will be a man walking on the Sirat (bridge to Paradise). He will stumble once and walk once, and the fire will scorch him once. Once he has crossed the Sirat, he will turn towards it and say, 'Blessed is the One who saved me from you. Indeed, Allah has given me what He has not given to anyone from the earlier or later nations.' He will then be shown a tree and he will look at it and say, 'O Lord, get me closer to this tree so that I may get shade from its shade and drink from its water.' Allah will say, 'O My servant, didn't you make a promise not to demand anything other than this tree?' He will say, 'Yes, O Lord,' and he will pledge to Allah not to ask for anything else. However, Allah knows that he will eventually ask for more as he cannot bear the thought of being deprived of it. So, Allah will bring him closer to it and a tree better than it will be elevated for him. He will say, 'O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may take shade under its shade and drink from its water.' Allah will say, 'O My servant, didn't you make a promise not to demand anything other than this tree?' He will say, 'Yes, O Lord,' and he will pledge to Allah not to ask for anything else. Yet, Allah knows that he will eventually ask for more as he cannot bear the thought of being deprived of it. So, Allah will bring him closer to it and a tree will be elevated near the gate of Jannah, it will be better than the previous ones. So, Allah will bring him closer to it and he will hear the voices of the dwellers of Jannah. He will say, 'O Lord, enter me into Jannah.' Allah will say, 'What can satisfy you, O My servant? Will you be pleased if I give you the entire world and its equivalent along with it?' He will say, 'Are you mocking me, O Lord, while You are the Lord of Honor?' Allah will laugh until His molars will become visible. Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ recited the verse: 'Ask Me and I will grant you [your request].'" Abdullah said, 'Shouldn't you ask me why I laughed?' They said, 'Why did you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'I laughed at the laugh of the Lord when He said to His servant, 'Are you mocking Me, O My servant, while You are the Lord of Honor?' "

Verily the Messenger of Allah said: The last to enter Paradise would be a man who would walk once and stumble once and be burnt by the Fire once. (Using translation from Muslim 187)

42). [AI] On the authority of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The last person to leave the Hellfire will be a man who will be told by Allah, 'O son of Adam, what did you prepare for this day? Did you do any good or did you hope for My mercy?' He will reply, 'No, O Lord.' So he will be commanded to be taken to the Hellfire, and he will be the most deserving of its inhabitants. Then Allah will say to the other person, 'O son of Adam, what did you prepare for this day? Did you do any good or did you hope for My mercy?' He will reply, 'Yes, O Lord. I sincerely hoped that You would not return me to the Hellfire ever again.' So a tree will be raised for him, and he will say, 'O Lord, enable me to sit in its shade, eat from its fruits, and drink from its water.' He will be promised not to be asked for anything else, and he will be brought closer to it. Then another tree, better than the first one, will be raised for him, and he will have the same request. Finally, a tree will be raised at the gate of Paradise, which is the best of all, and a stream of abundant water will flow from it. He will make the same request as before, and he will hear the voices of the inhabitants of Paradise. He will not be able to contain himself and he will say, 'O Lord, admit me into Paradise.' Allah the Exalted and Glorious will say, 'Ask Me and I shall grant you your request.' So the man will ask and ask until he asks for an amount equivalent to the duration of three days in this worldly life. He will say, 'You will have what you asked for and ten times more with it.' Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri said: "One of them said to his companion: 'Relate to me what you have heard.' And the companion likewise asked his companion to relate to him what he had heard."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, the last two people to come out of the Fire, Allah will say to one of them, 'O son of Adam, what have you prepared for this Day? Then another tree, better than the first, will be raised for him, and he will say, 'O Lord, admit me under the shade of this tree, and let me eat from its fruits and drink from its water.' And he will be promised that he will not ask for anything else, but he will be shaded by the tree and eat from its fruits and drink from its water. Then a tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, and it will be better than the previous two and more abundant in water. He will say, 'O Lord, admit me under the shade of this tree.' So he will be brought near to it and be shaded by it. He will then hear the voices of the people of Paradise, and he will not be able to resist and say, 'O Lord, enter me into Paradise.' Allah will say, 'Ask and you shall be granted.' So he will ask and wish for the equivalent of three days of the world's life, and Allah will teach him what he had no knowledge of before. Then when he finishes his wishes and asks, Allah will say, 'For you is what you have asked for and the like of it.' Abu Sa'id said: 'The same was narrated by his companion, and Abu Hurairah said: 'And ten times more like it was narrated by his companion.' One of them said to his companion, 'Tell me what you heard, and I will tell you what I heard.'"

[AI] I said, "O Abu Abdullah al-Rahman, referring to Ibn Umar, there are people who claim that there is no fate (predestination). He said: Do we have anyone among us like them? I said, No. He said: Then convey to them from me that when you meet them, indeed Ibn Umar disassociates himself from you and you disassociate yourselves from him." Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated to us that while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came who had no signs of travel nor was he from the people of the city. He came and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah. He said, "O Muhammad, what is Islam? He said, "Islam is that you bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, give zakah, perform Hajj, perform Umrah, cleanse yourself from major impurity, complete ablution, and fast during Ramadan." He said, "If I do all of that, would I be a Muslim?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, what is faith (imaan)?" He said, "Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and you believe in the Day of Judgment, and you believe in fate, its good and its evil." He said, "If I do all of that, would I be a believer (mu'min)?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, what is excellence (ihsan)?" He said, "Excellence is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and even though you do not see Him, He sees you." He asked, "If I do that, would I be excellent (muhsin)?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken the truth." He asked, "O Muhammad, when is the Hour (Day of Judgment)?" He said, "Glory be to Allah, the one who is asked about it knows no more than the questioner, but if you wish, I will inform you about its signs." He said, "Yes." He said, "When you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings and when you see women giving birth to their mistresses, that is among the signs of the Hour." He said, "You have spoken the truth." Then the man left, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Umar, do you know who this man was?" We said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "This was Gabriel who came to teach you your religion."

[AI] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: "The last person to enter Paradise will be a man walking on the Sirat (bridge to Paradise). He will stumble once and the fire will scorch him. Every time he passes by it, he will turn to it and say, 'Blessed is the One who saved me from you. By Allah, no one has been given anything like what I have been given among all the worlds.’ Then, a tree will be raised for him, and he will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water. Then, another tree will be raised for him, which is even better than the first. He will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water. Then, a third tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, which is even better than the first two. He will say, 'O Lord, draw me closer to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ But the man will swear that he will not ask for anything else, even though he knows that he will. Then, Allah will bring him close to it, and he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise. He will say, 'O Lord, admit me to Paradise.’ Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, what will make you content with Me and My favor? Would it please you if I give you the entire world and as much again?’ The man will reply, 'Are You making fun of me while You are the Lord of all creation?’ I said, 'Would you not like Me to give you that and as much again?’ The man will say, 'O Lord, I am not making fun of You, but I am asking You for something else.’ The Prophet ﷺ then smiled so broadly that his molars could be seen and he said, 'Do you not wonder at what made me laugh? They asked, 'O Prophet of Allah! What made you laugh?’ He said, 'I laughed because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the same as I have said (i.e., the man said the same as I said when he entered Paradise).' "

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The last person to enter Paradise will walk on the bridge and will walk one step and then kneel. The fire will surround him, and when he surpasses it, he will turn towards it and say, 'Blessed is He who saved me from you. He has given me something that He has not given to anyone among the earlier and later people.' A tree will be raised for him, and he will say, 'O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may take shade under its shade and drink from its water.' Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything other than this?' He will say, 'Yes, my Lord, but I will not ask You for anything other than this.' Allah will excuse him because He will see something that he cannot bear, and he will say, 'O Lord, bring me closer to it so that I may take shade under its shade and drink from its water.' Then a tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, which is better than the first one. He will say, 'O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may take shade under its shade and drink from its water.' Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything other than this?' He will say, 'Yes, my Lord, but I will not ask You for anything other than this.' Allah will excuse him because He will see something that he cannot bear, and He will bring him closer to it. He will then hear the voices of the people of Paradise, and he will say, 'O Lord, admit me to it.' Allah will say, 'O son of Adam, would it please you if I were to give you the entire world and a similar world along with it?' He will say, 'Are You making fun of me, though You are the Lord of all the worlds?' The Messenger of Allah laughed and then said, 'Do you not ask me why I laughed?' The person asked, 'Why did you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'I laughed at the laughter of the Lord of the worlds when He said, 'Do you make fun of Me, though You are the Lord of all the worlds?' He said, 'No, I am not making fun of you, but I can do whatever I will.'"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding the saying of Allah (If you are in debt and cannot find a scribe, let there be a pledge taken in hand) until the end of the verse (Indeed, the first person to deny Adam was his son Dawood. He saw a man with bright shining light, and he said, 'O Lord, who is this?'). When death approached him and the angels came to him, he said, 'There are still forty years left of my life.' They said, 'You have given them to your son Dawood.' He said, 'I have not given anything to anyone.' So Allah brought out the book and the angels testified against him. Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us that Ahmad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, on the authority of Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Baghwiy, on the authority of Abu Salamah Musa ibn Ismail, on the authority of Hammad ibn Salamah, mentioning the meaning of this Hadith except that he said at the beginning of it, when the verse about debt was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and at the end of it, and Adam lived a complete one thousand years and Dawood lived one hundred years.

But you gave sixty years to your son Dawud.’ So he rejected, and his offspring rejected, and he forgot, and his offspring forgot.” He said: “So ever since that day, what is written and witnessed has been decreed.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3367)

[AI] I was sent by Ibn Ayyash bin Abi Rabia to Umar bin Abdul Aziz for his needs. I entered upon him and there was a scribe with him who was writing. I greeted him and he replied with greetings. Then, I said, "Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful, and the mercy of Allah." He said, "O son of Ziyad, we do not deny the first thing you said." The scribe was reading to him the grievances that came from Basra. Then, he told me to sit, so I sat on a step near the door while he listened to the scribe reading. Umar was sighing heavily. When he finished, he dismissed everyone in the room until only I and him were present. He sat in front of me and placed his hands on my knees. Then, he said, "O son of Abi Ziyad, have you worn this armor?" I said, "Yes, I have a padded armor made of wool and I have rested from what we were in." Then, he asked me about the righteous men and women of Madinah, and he asked me about the matters he had commanded them in Madinah, and I informed him. Then, he said, "O son of Abi Ziyad, don't you see what has happened to me?" I said, "Rejoice, O Commander of the Faithful, for I hope good for you." He said, "Never, never." Then, he cried until I also mourned for him. I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, some of your actions are praiseworthy, for I hope good for you." He said, "Never, never. I neither insult nor am I insulted, I neither strike nor am I struck, I neither harm nor am I harmed." He said, and then he cried until I also mourned for him. So, I stayed until he fulfilled my needs, and he wrote to my master asking him to sell me, but he refused and then freed me.

وقال أبو هريرة: "وعشرةُ أمثالِه".
Verily the Messenger of Allah said: The last to enter Paradise would be a man who would walk once and stumble once and be burnt by the Fire once. (Using translation from Muslim 187)
