I asked al-Bara' ibn Azib: What should be avoided in sacrificial animals? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us, and my fingers are smaller than his fingers, and my fingertips are smaller than his fingertips. He said (pointing with his fingers): Four (types of animals) should be avoided in sacrifice: A One-eyed animal which has obviously lost the sight of one eye, a sick animal which is obviously sick, a lame animal which obviously limps and an animal with a broken leg with no marrow. I also detest an animal which has defective teeth. He said: Leave what you detest, but do not make it illegal for anyone. Abu Dawud said: (By a lean animal mean) and animal which has no marrow.

قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَصَابِعِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ أَصَابِعِهِ وَأَنَامِلِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ أَنَامِلِهِ فَقَالَ أَرْبَعٌ لاَ تَجُوزُ فِي الأَضَاحِي الْعَوْرَاءُ بَيِّنٌ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ بَيِّنٌ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ بَيِّنٌ ظَلْعُهَا وَالْكَسِيرُ الَّتِي لاَ تَنْقَى قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي السِّنِّ نَقْصٌ قَالَ مَا كَرِهْتَ فَدَعْهُ وَلاَ تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ

"IU said to Al-Bara bin Azib: 'Tell me of the sacrificial animals that the Messenger of Allah disliked or forbade, He said: The Messenger of Allah stood up, and my hands are shorter than his, and he said: "There are four that will not do as sacrifices: the animals that clearly has one bad eye: the sick animals that is obviously sick; the lame animal with an obvious limp; and the animal that is so emaciated that it is as if three is no marrow in its bones."' I said: "I dislike that the animals should have some fault in its horns or teeth' He said;'what you dislike, forget about it and do not make it for bidden to anyone.""

حَدِّثْنِي عَمَّا نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الأَضَاحِي قَالَ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَقَالَ أَرْبَعٌ لاَ يَجُزْنَ الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلْعُهَا وَالْكَسِيرَةُ الَّتِي لاَ تُنْقِي قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْقَرْنِ نَقْصٌ وَأَنْ يَكُونَ فِي السِّنِّ نَقْصٌ قَالَ مَا كَرِهْتَهُ فَدَعْهُ وَلاَ تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ

"I said to Al-Bara bin Azib: 'Tell me of the sacrificial animals that the Messenger of Allah dislike or forbade. He said: "The Messenger of Allah gestured like this with his hand, and my hands are shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah, (and he said). 'There are four that will not do as sacrifices: The animal that clearly has one bad eye: the sick animals that is obviously sick; the lame animal with an obvious lamp; and the animal that is so emaciated that it is as if there is no marrow in its bones: He said: "And I dislike that the animal should have some fault in its horns or ears." He said: "What you dislike, forget about it, and do not make it forbidden to anyone."

“I heard ‘Ubaid bin Fairuz say: ‘I said to Bara’ bin ‘Azib: “Tell us of the sacrificial animals that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked or forbade.” He said: “Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said like this with his hand. [AI] I asked Baraa' ibn 'Aazib, "What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dislike or prohibit regarding the sacrificial animals?" He stood up among us and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'His hand is longer than mine,' or he said, 'My hand is shorter than his.' He said, 'There are four types of animals that are not permissible for sacrifice: a one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, a sick animal whose sickness is obvious, a limping animal whose limp is obvious, and a broken-back animal that does not benefit.' So I said to Baraa', 'We also dislike having any deficiency in the ear, eye, or tooth.' He replied, 'If you dislike it, leave it, and do not prohibit it for anyone else.'

سَأَلْتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ مَا كَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْأَضَاحِيِّ أَوْ مَا نَهَى عَنْهُ مِنَ الْأَضَاحِيِّ؟ فَقَالَ قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَيَدُهُ أَطْوَلُ مِنْ يَدِي أَوْ قَالَ يَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِهِ قَالَ أَرْبَعٌ لَا تَجُوزُ فِي الضَّحَايَا الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَرَجُهَا وَالْكَسِيرُ الَّتِي لَا تُنْقِي فَقُلْتُ لِلْبَرَاءِ فَإِنَّا نَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْأُذُنِ نَقْصٌ أَوْ فِي الْعَيْنِ نَقْصٌ أَوْ فِي السِّنِّ نَقْصٌ قَالَ فَمَا كَرِهْتَهُ فَدَعْهُ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "What should be given as charity from the sacrificial animals?" He replied, "Four types." And he said, "The barren (female) camel whose foreleg is shorter than the foreleg of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the clear-eyed goat with a clear spot on its ribs, the sheep with a clear spot on its private parts, the sick animal that clearly shows its illness, and the feeble animal that cannot be driven."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ مَاذَا يُتَّقَى مِنَ الضَّحَايَا؟ فَقَالَ أَرْبَعٌ وَقَالَ الْبَرَاءُ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلْعُهَا وَالْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَجْفَاءُ الَّتِي لَا تُنْقِي

Yahya related to me from Malik from Amr ibn al-Harith from Ubayd ibn Fayruz from al-Bara ibn Azib that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked what animals should be avoided as sacrifices. He indicated with his hand and said, "Four." Al-Bara pointed with his hand and said, "My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A lame animal whose lameness is evident, a one-eyed animal which is clearly one-eyed, an animal which is clearly ill, and an emaciated animal with no fat on it."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ مَاذَا يُتَّقَى مِنَ الضَّحَايَا فَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ وَقَالَ أَرْبَعًا وَكَانَ الْبَرَاءُ يُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ وَيَقُولُ يَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلْعُهَا وَالْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَجْفَاءُ الَّتِي لاَ تُنْقِي

"I said to Al-Bara bin Azib: 'Tell me of the sacrificial animals that the Messenger of Allah dislike or forbade. عَنْ شُعْبَةَ وَهَذَا اللَّفْظُ حَدِيثُ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ فَيْرُوزٍ يَقُولُ قُلْتُ لِلْبَرَاءِ حَدَّثَنِي عَمَّا كَرِهَ أَوْ نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْأَضَاحِي قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَكَذَا بِيَدِهِ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعٌ لَا يَجْزِينَ فِي الْأَضَاحِي الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَرَجُهَا وَالْكَسِيرُ الَّتِي لَا تَنْقَى قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ نَقْصٌ فِي الْأُذُنِ وَالْقَرْنِ قَالَ «فَمَا كَرِهْتَ فَدَعْهُ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ»

[AI] He said: "Indeed, we dislike flaws in speech and hearing." So Bara'a said to him: "Dislike for yourself whatever you wish, but do not prohibit it for others." Bara'a said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are four things that are not permissible as sacrificial animals: the one that is clearly blind, the one that has a clear injury in its limbs, the one that is clearly sick, and the one that is emaciated and cannot be fattened."

لَهُ إِنَّا نَكْرَهُ النَّقْصَ فِي الْقُرُونِ وَالْأُذُنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْبَرَاءُ اكْرَهْ لِنَفْسِكَ مَا شِئْتَ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعٌ لَا يَجْزِي فِي الضَّحَايَا الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَكْسُورَةُ بَعْضُ قَوَائِمِهَا بَيِّنٌ كَسْرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ بَيِّنٌ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَجْفَاءُ الَّتِي لَا تَنْقَى

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed with his hand, and my hand is shorter than his hand, and he said, "There are four things that should not be abandoned: visible nakedness that should be covered, clear sickness that should be treated, visible disability that should be supported, and a lean person in need of nourishment." They said to Al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him), "We only find the defect in terms of age, ear, and tail." He said, "Dislike whatever you wish, but do not make it forbidden for people."

أَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَقَالَ «أَرْبَعٌ لَا يُضَحَّى بِهِنَّ الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلَعُهَا وَالْعَجْفَاءُ الَّتِي لَا تُنْقِي» فَقَالُوا لِلْبَرَاءِ فَإِنَّمَا نَكْرَهُ النَّقْصَ فِي السِّنِّ وَالْأُذُنِ وَالذَّنَبِ قَالَ «فَاكْرَهُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ وَلَا تُحَرِّمُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ»

[AI] I asked Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked about sacrificial animals. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are four types that are not permissible in the sacrificial animals of Eid Al-Adha: a lame animal with a visible limp, a blind animal with visible blindness, a sick animal with evident sickness, and an animal that is emaciated and cannot be fattened."

حَدِّثْنِي عَمَّا كَرِهَ أَوْ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْأَضَاحِيِّ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَكَذَا بِيَدِهِ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعٌ لَا تُجْزِي فِي الْأَضَاحِيِّ الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَرَجُهَا وَالْكَسِيرُ الَّتِي لَا تَنْقَى قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ نَقْصٌ فِي الْأُذُنِ وَالْقَرْنِ قَالَ فَمَا كَرِهْتَ فَدَعْهُ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ

[AI] I asked Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked or forbade in regards to sacrificial animals. He said: There are four types of animals that are not sufficient unless their faults are clearly visible: the blind animal with a clearly visible blindness, the sick animal with a clearly visible sickness, the limping animal with a clearly visible limp, and the emaciated animal that cannot be improved. I said: I dislike having a deficiency in the incisor or in the ear. He said: So, whatever fault you dislike, leave it, and do not forbid it for anyone else. 19098 Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Fadl Al-Khuzai informed us that Abu Shu'aib informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Madinay informed us that Yahya ibn Sa'id informed us that Shu'bah narrated to me that Sulaiman ibn 'Abd Al-Rahman informed me about 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz, and he mentioned the Hadith in this manner, and he did not mention hearing it from 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz.
