[Machine] 'Aasim ibn Hubayrah, one of Abdullah's companions, said to me, "When you finish the call to prayer and say 'There is no god but Allah,' then say 'And I am one of the Muslims.'"
قَالَ لِي عَاصِمُ بْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا فَرَغْتَ مِنَ الْأَذَانِ فَقُلْتَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَقُلْ وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
[Machine] 'Aasim bin Hubayrah saw a tambourine or a drum, so he took it from its owner and began tapping on it but it broke and he was unable to fix it. He said, "I am not helped by Satan; they have what helps me with this."'
رَأَى عَاصِمُ بْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ طَبْلًا أَوْ دُفًّا فَأَخَذَهُ مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ فَجَعَلَ يَنْقُرُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَخْرِقُهُ فَلَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَقُولُ «مَا أَعْيَانِي شَيْطَانٌ لَهُمْ مَا أَعْيَانِي هَذَا»
[Machine] "He informed us that we are heading towards the fire, but he did not inform us that we will be departing from it."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَنَّا وَارِدُونَ النَّارَ وَلَمْ يُخْبِرْنَا أَنَّا صَادِرُونَ عَنْهَا
[Machine] Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Layla used to pray, and when he entered his home, he slept on his bed.
كَانَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى يُصَلِّي فَإِذَا دَخَلَ الدَّاخِلُ نَامَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ
[Machine] Abu Wael said to me, "Do you know what I compare the reciters of our time to?" I said, "Who do you compare them to?" He said, "I compare them to a man who fattens a sheep, and when he slaughters it, he finds it filled with impurities that cannot be purified. Or a man who accumulates coins and throws them into mercury, then takes them out and finds them to be made of copper."
قَالَ لِي أَبُو وَائِلٍ «أَتَدْرِي بِمَا أُشَبِّهُ قُرَّاءَ أَهْلِ زَمَانِنَا» ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَمَنْ يُشْبِهُهُمْ؟ قَالَ «أُشَبِّهُهُمْ بِرَجُلٍ أَسْمَنَ غَنَمًا فَلَمَّا ذَبَحَهَا وَجَدَهَا غُثَاءً لَا تَنْقَى أَوْ رَجُلٍ عَمَدَ إِلَى دَرَاهِمَ فَأَلْقَاهَا فِي زِئْبَقٍ ثُمَّ أَخْرَجَهَا فَكَسَرَهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ نُحَاسٌ»
[Machine] According to Ibrahim al-Taymi, "Death comes to him from every place" (Ibrahim 17). He said, "Even from the location of a hair."
عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ {وَيَأْتِيهِ الْمَوْتُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ} [إبراهيم 17] قَالَ «حَتَّى مِنْ مَوْضِعِ الشَّعْرِ»
[Machine] Ibrahim used to call out, saying, "O Allah, protect me with Your Book and the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from differences in the truth, and from following desires without guidance from You, and from the path of misguidance, and from doubtful matters, and from deviance, perplexity, and disputes."
كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَدْعُو يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ اعْصِمْنِي بِكِتَابِكَ وَسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ مِنِ اخْتِلَافٍ فِي الْحَقِّ وَمِنِ اتِّبَاعِ الْهَوَى بِغَيْرِ هُدًى مِنْكَ وَمِنْ سَبِيلِ الضَّلَالِ وَمِنْ شُبُهَاتِ الْأُمُورِ وَمِنِ الزَّيْغِ وَاللَّبْسِ وَالْخُصُومَاتِ»
[Machine] "It is sought by the face of Allah from Ibrahim al-Taymi, even if I wished that he had come out of it moderately."
أَنْ يُطْلَبَ بِهِ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ ﷻ مِنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ وَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ مِنْهُ كَفَافًا»
[Machine] I dreamt that I came to a river and someone said to me, "Drink and give drink to whoever you wish with your patience, and you were one of those who restrain themselves."
أُرِيتُ فِي الْمَنَامِ كَأَنِّي أَتَيْتُ عَلَى نَهْرٍ فَقِيلَ لِي اشْرَبْ وَاسْقِ مَنْ شِئْتَ بِمَا صَبَرْتَ وَكُنْتَ مِنَ الْكَاظِمِينَ
[Machine] I heard Al-Sha'abi saying, "I wish I had escaped unscathed."
سَمِعْتُ الشَّعْبِيَّ يَقُولُ «وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي نَجَوْتُ كَفَافًا»
[Machine] "O Abdullah, this does not belong to our sitting."
«يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ لِهَذَا جَلَسْنَا»
[Machine] Abdullah ibn Abi al-Hudhayl once complained of his sins. A man said to him, "O Abu al-Mughira, aren't you pious?" He replied, "O Allah, this servant of Yours intended to draw nearer to You, so I bear witness to his hatred of sin."
شَكَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي الْهُذَيْلِ يَوْمًا ذُنُوبَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ يَا أَبَا الْمُغِيرَةِ أَوَلَسْتَ التَّقِيَّ؟ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ عَبْدَكَ هَذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَتَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْكَ فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ عَلَى مَقْتِهِ»
[Machine] "I wait for the angel of death, ﷺ . I don't know by what he will give me the good news of Paradise or Hell?"
«أَنْتَظِرُ مَلَكَ الْمَوْتِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ مَا أَدْرِي بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ يُبَشِّرُنِي بِالْجَنَّةِ أَوْ بِالنَّارِ؟»
[Machine] I was with Ibrahim while he was reading in the Quran, a man interrupted him and covered it and said, "Do not let him see me, as I read in it every hour."
كُنْتُ عِنْدَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْمُصْحَفِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَغَطَّاهُ وَقَالَ «لَا يَرَانِي هَذَا أَنِّي أَقْرَأُ فِيهِ كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ»
[Machine] "That one of them performed ablution on his nails, and I did not count it."
أَنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ تَوَضَّأَ عَلَى ظُفْرِهِ لَمْ أُعِدْهُ»
[Machine] The translation of the passage in English is: "The funeral used to take place in them, and they would wander the days mournfully. It was evident in them."
«كَانَتْ تَكُونُ فِيهِمُ الْجِنَازَةُ فَيُضِلُّونَ الْأَيَّامَ مَحْزُونِينَ يُعْرَفُ ذَلِكَ فِيهِمْ»
[Machine] If we were to witness the funeral, we wouldn't know who to console from the people's grief.
«إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَشْهَدُ الْجِنَازَةَ فَمَا نَدْرِي مَنْ نُعَزِّي مِنْ حُزْنِ الْقَوْمِ»
[Machine] In this verse, "And for those who fear the position of their Lord, there will be two gardens." [Ar-Rahman 46] He said, "When he wants to commit a sin, he refrains out of fear of Allah."
فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِ} [الرحمن 46] قَالَ «إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُذْنِبَ أَمْسَكَ مَخَافَةَ اللَّهِ ﷻ»
أَنْ يَرَوْا أَنِّي أَعْلَمُ
[Machine] Ibrahim al-Nakhi narrated that we used to recognize when a funeral is present or when we hear about a deceased person, based on the signs that would appear in us for some days. Because we knew that a matter has been decreed for him, whether it would lead him to Paradise or to Hell. He said, "So indeed, you speak about worldly matters during your funerals."
أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخْعِيَّ كَانَ يَقُولُ كُنَّا إِذَا حَضَرْنَا جِنَازَةً أَوْ سَمِعْنَا الْمَيِّتَ عُرِفَ ذَلِكَ فِينَا أَيَّامًا؛ لِأَنَّا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا أَنَّهُ قَدْ نَزَلَ بِهِ أَمْرٌ صَيَّرَهُ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ أَوْ إِلَى النَّارِ قَالَ فَإِنَّكُمْ فِي جَنَائِزِكُمْ تَحَدِّثُونَ بِأَحَادِيثِ دُنْيَاكُمْ
[Machine] "May Allah ﷻ know from my heart any resentment towards Muslims."
أَنْ يَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ ﷻ مِنْ قَلْبِي غِلًّا عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ»
[Machine] I do not know what the righteous are, but with good.
«مَا أَدْرِي مَا الصَّالِحُونَ؟ وَلَكِنْ بِخَيْرٍ»
[Machine] Sufyan said, "Nothing scares me more than idle talk, and there is nothing better than it for someone who seeks what is with Allah."
سُفْيَانُ «مَا شَيْءٌ أَخْوَفُ عِنْدِي مِنَ الْحَدِيثِ وَمَا شَيْءٌ أَفْضَلُ مِنْهُ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ﷻ»
[Machine] I heard Abu Ishaq saying, "Abu Abdul Rahman As-Salmi used to recite the Quran in the mosque for forty years."
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ يَقُولُ «أَقْرَأَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّلَمِيُّ الْقُرْآنَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً»
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it." Bahz, in his narration, also said, "The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it." Muhammad bin Ja'far and Hujjaj, in their narration, said that Abu Abdur Rahman As-Salami said, "That is the one who made me sit in this place."
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ خَيْرَكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ» قَالَ بَهْزٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ «خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ» قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَحَجَّاجٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِمَا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّلَمِيُّ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي أَقْعَدَنِي هَذَا الْمَقْعَدَ
[Machine] Abu Abdurrahman said, "I used to pray Isha (night prayer) like you, then I would get up and pray. When I prayed Fajr (dawn prayer), I would be more active than when I first started."
أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ «كُنْتُ أَنَا مِثْلَكَ أُصَلِّي الْعِشَاءَ ثُمَّ أَقُومُ أُصَلِّي فَأَنَا حِينَ أُصَلِّي الْفَجْرَ أَنْشَطُ مِنِّي أَوَّلَ مَا بَدَأْتُ»
[Machine] "He is honest and doesn't engage in lying even as a joke."
أَنَّهُ صَادِقٌ وَيَتْرُكَ الْكَذِبَ فِي الْمُزَاحَةِ»
[Machine] I heard Sufyan saying, "If you know yourself, what people say does not harm you."
سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ [297] «إِذَا عَرَفْتَ نَفْسَكَ لَمْ يَضُرَّكَ مَا قَالَ النَّاسُ»
بَقِيَ خَيْرُكَ وَذَهَبَ شَرُّكُ»
[Machine] Kurdus used to narrate to us during the time of Hajjaj and he used to say: "Verily, Paradise can only be attained through sincere deeds. Purify your desires with fear and always remain on righteous actions. Seek refuge in Allah with sound hearts and sincere deeds. And it is frequently said, 'Whoever fears, is guided."'
كَانَ كُرْدُوسُ يَقُصُّ عَلَيْنَا فِي زَمَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ فَيَقُولُ إِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ لَا تُنَالُ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ لَهَا أَخْلِصُوا الرَّغْبَةَ بِالرَّهْبَةِ وَدُومُوا عَلَى صَالِحِ الْأَعْمَالِ وَالْقَوْا اللَّهَ بِقُلُوبٍ سَلِيمَةٍ وَأَعْمَالٍ صَادِقَةٍ وَيَكْثُرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ مَنْ خَافَ أَدْلَجَ مَنْ خَافَ أَدْلَجَ
أَنْ أَقُومَ
[Machine] "The entry of joy onto the believer, it was said, what remains from you? He said, 'The favor upon the brothers.'"
إِدْخَالُ السُّرُورِ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ قِيلَ مَا بَقِيَ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ؟ قَالَ «الْإِفْضَالُ عَلَى الْإِخْوَانِ»
[Machine] Muhammad ibn Ali said: "Invoke Allah in what you love, and when what you dislike happens, you will not disobey Allah in what you love."
قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ «ادْعُ اللَّهَ فِيمَا تُحِبُّ فَإِذَا وَقَعَ الَّذِي تَكْرَهُ لَمْ تُخَالِفِ اللَّهَ فِيمَا أَحَبَّ»
[Machine] Abu Muslim Al-Khawlani said, "People used to be like leaves without thorns, but today they are thorns without leaves. If you insult them, they insult you, if you criticize them, they criticize you, and if you leave them, they will not leave you."
قَالَ أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ «كَانَ النَّاسُ وَرَقًا لَا شَوْكَ فِيهِ وَإِنَّهُمُ الْيَوْمَ شَوْكٌ لَا وَرَقَ فِيهِ إِنْ سَابَبْتَهُمْ سَابُّوكَ وَإِنْ نَاقَدْتَهُمْ نَاقَدُوكَ وَإِنْ تَرَكْتَهُمْ لَمْ يَتْرُكُوكَ»
[Machine] Indeed, the world has been made little, and what remains of it is only a small amount of little.
«إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا جُعِلَتْ قَلِيلًا فَمَا بَقِيَ مِنْهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ مِنْ قَلِيلٍ»
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A believer is like a part of the body that is connected to the rest of the body." Similarly, a believer is affected by what affects other believers.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الْمُؤْمِنُ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ بَمَنْزِلَةِ الرَّأْسِ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ» كَذَلِكَ الْمُؤْمِنُ يُؤْلِمُهُ مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
[Machine] We used to go to Khaythamah, and then the night would come out to us from under the bed in it the scorpions and the centipedes, and he would say, "I did nothing but for you."
كُنَّا نَأْتِي خَيْثَمَةَ فَيَخْرُجُ إِلَيْنَا اللَّيْلَةَ مِنْ تَحْتِ السَّرِيرِ فِيهَا الْخَبِيصُ وَالْفَالَوْذَجُ فَيَقُولُ «مَا عَمِلْتُهُ إلَّا لَكُمْ»
[Machine] Al-Jurairy returned from a trip and his brothers came to greet him. He began to inform them of what Allah had shown him during his journey, from things that he liked and things that he disliked. He spoke about it in the best and most eloquent way. He said, "Indeed, it is said that one of the ways to show gratitude is to count blessings."
قَدِمَ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ مِنْ سَفَرٍ فَأَتَاهُ إِخْوَانُهُ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِ فَجَعَلَ يُخْبِرُهُمْ بِمَا أَبْلَاهُ اللَّهُ فِي سَفَرِهِ مِمَّا يُحِبُّ وَصَرَفَ عَنْهَ مِمَّا يَكْرَهُ وَتَكَلَّمَ فِي ذَلِكَ وَأَحْسَنَ وَأَبْلَغَ وَقَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ يُقَالُ «إِنَّ مِنَ الشُّكْرِ تَعْدَادُ النِّعَمِ»
[Machine] It is written in wisdom, "Thank the one who has bestowed upon you and bestow upon the one who thanked you."
مَكْتُوبٌ فِي الْحِكْمَةِ «اشْكُرْ لِمَنْ أَنْعَمَ عَلَيْكَ وَأَنْعِمْ عَلَى مَنْ شَكَرَكَ»
أَنْ أَعْطِهِ أَرْضَهَ وَأَرْضِي مَعَ أَرْضِهِ
[Machine] A man said to his brother Hisham, who intended to travel to Makkah, "Your advice is to fear Allah and pray the prayers on time, for you will definitely pray them. Pray them while they benefit you. Beware of being a dog in the company of your friends, for every group has a dog that barks behind them. If it is good, they thank it, and if it is bad, they blame it. Therefore, beware of being a dog in your company."
قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِهِشَامٍ أَخِي ذِي الرُّمَّةِ وَأَرَادَ السَّفَرَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ «وَصِيَّتُكَ بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ ﷻ وَصَلِّ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا فَإِنَّكَ مُصَلِّيهَا لَا مَحَالَةَ فَصَلِّهَا وَهِيَ تَنْفَعُكَ وَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ كَلْبَ رُفْقَتِكَ فَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ رُفْقَةٍ كَلْبًا يَنْبَحُ دُونَهُمْ فَإِنْ كَانَ خَيْرًا شَكَرُوهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَارًا تَقَلَّدَهُ دُونَهُمْ فَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ كَلْبَ رُفْقَتِكَ»
[Machine] "Indeed, Hellfire will be a bursting flame, ripping out the hearts of the unjust. Then it will burst forth once again, causing them to fly from the earth until they fall into it, upon their heads."
«إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَتَزْفُرُ زَفْرَةً تَنْشَقُّ مِنْهَا قُلُوبُ الظَّلَمَةِ ثُمَّ تَزْفُرُ أُخْرَى فَيَطِيرُوا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى يَقَعُوا فِيهَا عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ»
[Machine] It is said, "The first step of knowledge is to listen to it, then to hear it, then to preserve it, then to act upon it, and then to spread it."
يُقَالُ «أَوَّلُ الْعِلْمِ الْإِنْصَاتُ لَهُ ثُمَّ الِاسْتِمَاعُ لَهُ ثُمَّ حِفْظُهُ ثُمَّ الْعَمَلُ بِهِ ثُمَّ بَثُّهُ»
[Machine] In His saying "He is the one who deserves to be feared and the one who forgives" [Surah Al-Muddathir: 56], He said, "We are deserving that My servant fears Me. If he does not do so, then I am deserving to forgive him."
فِي قَوْلِهِ ﷻ {هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ} [المدثر 56] قَالَ «إِنَّا أَهْلٌ لِأَنْ يَتَّقِيَنِي عَبْدِي فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ كُنْتُ أَهْلًا لِأَنْ أَغْفِرَ لَهُ»
[Machine] From some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, it is narrated that he said: "The mosque is a strong fortress against Satan."
عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ «الْمَسْجِدُ حِصْنٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ شَدِيدٌ»
[Machine] I entered upon Salam, the father of Al-Mundhir, while he was sick, and he began to recite to himself. I stuttered in his presence, which angered me. Then a muezzin called from the minaret of the Grand Mosque, saying, "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah." Salam said, "Peace, I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, who is not in the heavens and the earth except what He wills." Then he passed away. May Allah have mercy on him.
دَخَلْتُ عَلَى سَلَامٍ أَبِي الْمُنْذِرِ وَهُوَ فِي النَّزْعِ فَجَعَلَ يُلَقَّنُ فَأَبْطَأَ عَنْهَا فَغَمَّنِي ذَلِكَ فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ عَلَى مَنَارَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْجَامِعِ فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَقَالَ سَلَامٌ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا يَكُونُ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ ثُمَّ مَاتَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah the Almighty said, 'Remove from the Fire whoever remembers Me for a day or fears Me at a gathering.'"
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى «أَخْرِجُوا مِنَ النَّارِ مَنْ ذَكَرَنِي يَوْمًا أَوْ خَافَنِي فِي مَقَامٍ»
وَقَالَ مَا يُدْرِيهِ عَلَى مَا هُوَ مِنْهُ؟
[Machine] The people of Paradise oversee a group of people in Hell, and they say, "What happened to you in Hell? We only acted upon what you taught us." They say, "We taught you but did not act upon it ourselves."
يُشْرِفُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فِي النَّارِ فَيَقُولُونَ مَا لَكُمْ فِي النَّارِ وَإِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ بِمَا تُعَلِّمُونَا؟ فَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُعَلِّمُكُمْ وَلَا نَعْمَلُ بِهِ
[Machine] From the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the cover was lifted for her, so she cried until she passed away.
عَنْ قَبْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَكَشَفَتْ لَهَا عَنْهُ فَبَكَتْ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ
