[Machine] I heard Rabbi bin Khuthaym mention something about worldly affairs except that I heard him once say, "How many mosques do you have?"
سَمِعْتُ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ خُثَيْمٍ ذَكَرَ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ مَرَّةً يَقُولُ «كَمْ لَكُمْ مَسْجِدًا؟»
[Machine] "As for myself, I am content, so I focus on criticizing others instead of criticizing myself. Indeed, people fear God for the sins of others and feel secure about their own sins."
عَنْ نَفْسِي بِرَاضٍ فَأَتَفَرَّغَ مِنْ ذَمِّهَا إِلَى ذَمِّ النَّاسِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ خَافُوا اللَّهَ فِي ذُنُوبِ الْعِبَادِ وَأَمِنُوا عَلَى ذُنُوبِهِمْ»
«شَجَّةٌ لَا يُدَاوِيهَا عَنْكَ غَيْرُكَ»
أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي صَدَقَتِي كَسْرًا
[Machine] "O my daughter, do not cry, but my saying is, 'O my good news, today my father is meeting goodness.'"
يَا بُنَيَّةُ لَا تَبْكِي وَلَكِنْ قَوْلِي يَا بُشْرَايَ الْيَوْمَ يَلْقَى أَبِي الْخَيْرَ
[Machine] I have never seen Spring volunteering in the neighborhood mosque except once, and a man said to spring, "Tell me about a Quran", and he looked at his young son and said: "And those with whom you have [a kinship] are more worthy of [inheritance] in the decree of Allah." [Al-Ahzab 6]
مَا رَأَيْتُ الرَّبِيعَ مُتَطَوِّعًا فِي مَسْجِدِ الْحَيِّ قَطُّ إِلَّا مَرَّةً قَالَ وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلرَّبِيعِ أَوْصِ لِي بِمُصْحَفٍ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى ابْنٍ لَهُ صَغِيرٍ فَقَالَ {وَأُولُو الْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَى بِبَعْضٍ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ} [الأحزاب 6]
[Machine] It is said, "These two do not know what feeds them." And he says, "But Allah knows."
فَيُقَالُ مَا يَدْرِيَانَ هَذَانِ مَا تُطْعِمُهُمَا فَيَقُولُ «لَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَدْرِي»
[Machine] Al-Rabīʿ b. Khuthaym said, "Do not say, 'O Allah, I repent to You,' and then not repent, for it will be a deception and a sin. Instead, say, 'O Allah, forgive me.'"
قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ لَا تَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ لَا تَتُوبُ فَتَكُونَ كَذِبَةً وَتَكُونَ ذَنْبًا وَلَكِنْ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ تُبْ عَلَيَّ
[Machine] Rabee' bin Khuthaym used to cry until his beard was wet with tears, saying "We encountered a people whom we used to be thieves in their south."
كَانَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ يَبْكِي حَتَّى يَبُلَّ لِحْيَتَهُ مِنْ دُمُوعِهِ فَيَقُولُ «أَدْرَكْنَا قَوْمًا كُنَّا فِي جُنُوبِهِمْ لُصُوصًا»
سَمِعْتُ مِنْهُ كَلِمَةً تُعَابُ
[Machine] That Rabee'ah bin Kuthaym used to say whenever they came to him, "I seek refuge in Allah from your evil."
أَنَّ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ خُثَيْمٍ كَانَ إِذَا أَتَوْهُ يَقُولُ «أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّكُمْ»
[Machine] "O my daughter, indeed your father fears the bad deeds."
«يَا بُنَيَّةُ إِنَّ أَبَاكِ يَخَافُ السَّيِّئَاتِ»
[Machine] "O Abdullah, fear Allah in what you have been taught and what has been preferred for you. Give it all to its knowledgeable people because I am more fearful for you in your actions than you are. [274] You are not advised to follow what is good for you today, but it is better than the last of its evil. They do not truly follow the good when they follow it, nor do they truly flee from evil when they flee from it. Not everything that was revealed to Muhammad you have understood, nor everything that you read you comprehend. Then it says, the secrets, the secrets that are hidden from the people yet they are known to Allah, seek their remedies in the valley. Then it says, and what are their remedies? Repentance. And then it does not return."
يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فِيمَا عُلِّمْتَ وَمَا اسْتُؤْثِرَ بِهِ عَلَيْكَ فَكِلْهُ إِلَى عَالِمِهِ لَأَنَا فِي الْعَمَلِ أَخْوَفُ مِنِّي عَلَيْكُمْ [274] فِي الْخَطَأِ وَمَا خِيَارُكُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِخَيْرِهِ وَلَكِنَّهُ أَخْيَرُ مِنْ آخِرِ شَرٍّ مِنْهُ لَا يَتَّبِعُونَ الْخَيْرَ حَقَّ اتِّبَاعِهِ وَلَا يَفِرُّونَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ حَقَّ فِرَارِهِ مَا كُلُّ مَا نَزَلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ أَدْرَكْتُمْ وَلَا كُلُّ مَا تَقْرَءُونَ تَدْرُونَ مَا هُوَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ السَّرَائِرَ السَّرَائِرَ الَّتِي تَخْفَى عَلَى النَّاسِ وَهِيَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ بِوَادٍ الْتَمِسُوا دَوَاءَهُنَّ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ وَمَا دَوَاؤُهُنَّ يَتُوبُ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُ
[Machine] Al-Rabee'ah bin Khuthaym said that he used to be summoned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the pre-Islamic period of Ignorance, and he was singled out in Islam. Al-Rabee'ah said, "It is letter by letter: 'Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah.' [Quran 4:80]"
قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ كَانَ يُتَحَاكَمُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَبْلَ الْإِسْلَامِ واخْتُصَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ وَحَرْفٌ وَحَرْفٌ {مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ} [النساء 80]
[Machine] I passed by the blacksmiths to imitate them, but I had no good in me.
الْأَعْمَشُ «فَمَرَرْتُ بِالْحَدَّادِينَ لِأَتَشَبَّهَ بِهِ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ عِنْدِي خَيْرٌ»
[Machine] He said to his companions, "What is the disease? What is the remedy? What is the cure?" They said, "We do not know." He said, "The disease is sins, the remedy is seeking forgiveness, and the cure is to repent and never return."
أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ مَا الدَّاءُ؟ وَمَا الدَّوَاءُ؟ وَمَا الشِّفَاءُ؟ قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «الدَّاءُ الذُّنُوبُ وَالدَّوَاءُ الِاسْتِغْفَارُ وَالشِّفَاءُ أَنْ تَتُوبَ فَلَا تَعُودَ»
[Machine] I do not like when a servant addresses their Lord by saying, "My Lord, you have decided mercy upon yourself, thus, you have delayed it" and I have not seen anyone saying, "My Lord, I have fulfilled what was upon me, so fulfill what is upon you."
مَا أُحِبُّ مُنَاشَدَةَ الْعَبْدِ رَبَّهُ ﷻ بِقَوْلِهِ رَبِّ قَضَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ الرَّحْمَةَ قَضَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ كَذَا يَسْتَبْطِئُ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا يَقُولُ رَبِّ قَدْ أَدَّيْتُ مَا عَلَيَّ فَأَدِّ مَا عَلَيْكَ
[Machine] "What the believer waits for is better for him than death."
«مَا غَائِبٌ يَنْتَظِرُهُ الْمُؤْمِنُ خَيْرًا لَهُ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ»
[Machine] "Verily, speech has a light like the light of day that you recognize, and darkness like the darkness of night that you deny."
«إِنَّ لِلْحَدِيثِ ضَوْءًا كَضَوْءِ النَّهَارِ تَعْرِفُهُ وَظُلْمَةً كَظُلْمَةِ اللَّيْلِ تُنْكِرُهُ»
أَنْ أُقَلِّبَ بِكَفِّي النَّرْدَشِيرَ»
[Machine] He came to me tonight with a black dog wearing a chain around its neck and three spots on its face. He said, "This is the one that whispers dreams to you in the spring."
أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ بِكَلْبٍ أَسْوَدَ فِي عُنُقِهِ سِلْسِلَةٌ وَفِي وَجْهِهِ ثَلَاثُ شَجَّاتٍ فَقَالَ «هَذَا الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ لَكَ الرُّؤْيَا فِي الرَّبِيعِ»
[Machine] "When Abdullah would come, he would not seek permission from anyone until each of them finished their conversation with their companion. He would say, 'If the Prophet ﷺ saw you, he would love you, and I have never seen you except that it reminded me of the ones in seclusion.'"
كَانَ إِذَا أَتَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهِ إِذْنٌ لِأَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ «لَوْ رَآكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَأَحَبَّكَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُكَ إِلَّا ذَكَرْتُ الْمُخْبِتِينَ»
أَنْ آخُذَ بِنَصِيبِي مِنَ الْمِهْنَةِ»
[Machine] The spring, son of Khuthaym, was afflicted by lameness, so he was carried to the prayer.
أَصَابَ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ خُثَيْمٍ الْفَالِجُ فَكَانَ يُحْمَلُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ
[Machine] "The healer of the diseases of the prophets, peace be upon them."
«الْفَالِجُ دَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ»
[Machine] The spring season affected Al-Falij, so he was carried to prayer. It was said to him, "You have been exempted (from attending prayer) because of your condition." He said, "I know, but I hear the call to prayer with the plowman."
أَصَابَ الرَّبِيعَ الْفَالِجُ فَكَانَ يُحْمَلُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّهُ قَدْ رُخِّصَ لَكَ قَالَ «قَدْ عَلِمْتُ وَلَكِنِّي أَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ بِالْفَلَاحِ»
[Machine] Make us a meal and make it delicious, for I have a beloved brother whom I want to invite. So she decorated her house and prepared her sitting area, and she made a meal and made it delicious. Then she said, "Invite your brother." So he went to his neighbor's family, and his sight had already gone. He brought him until he seated him in a noble sitting area. Then he said, "Bring your meal closer." She said, "I did not make this meal except for him." He said, "Oh no, you have spoken the truth. This is my brother and I love him." So he began to take from the delicious food and feed him.
اصْنَعِي لَنَا طَعَامًا وأَطْيِبِي فَإِنَّ لِي أَخًا أُحِبُّهُ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَدْعُوَهُ فَزَيَّنَتْ بَيْتَهَا وَصَنَعَتْ مَجْلِسَهُ وَصَنَعَتْ طَعَامًا وَأَطَابَتْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَتِ ادْعُ أَخَاكَ فَذَهَبَ إِلَى سُلَالٍ جَارٍ لَهُ قَدْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ فَجَاءَ بِهِ حَتَّى أَجْلَسَهُ فِي كَرِيمِ مَجْلِسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَرِّبِي طَعَامَكِ فَقَالَتْ فَمَا صَنَعْتُ هَذَا الطَّعَامَ إِلَّا لِهَذَا قَالَ وَيْحَكِ قَدْ صَدَقْتُكِ هَذَا أَخِي وَأَنَا أُحِبُّهُ فَجَعَلَ يَأْخُذُ مِنْ طَيِّبِ ذَلِكَ الطَّعَامِ فَيُنَاوِلُهُ
[Machine] The spring came after its rain, and it was being guided between two men to his people's mosque. The companions of Abdullah would say, "O Abu Yazid, permission has been granted to you to pray in your house." He would reply, "Indeed, it is as you say, but I heard him calling out 'Hayya 'ala al-Falah' (come to success), so whoever hears it from you, let him respond even if he had to crawl or crawl on his knees."
كَانَ الرَّبِيعُ بَعْدَمَا سَقَطَ شِقُّهُ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ قَوْمِهِ وَكَانَ أَصْحَابُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُونَ يَا أَبَا يَزِيدَ قَدْ رُخِّصَ لَكَ لَوْ صَلَّيْتَ فِي بَيْتِكَ فَيَقُولُ إِنَّهُ كَمَا تَقُولُونَ وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يُنَادِي حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فَمَنْ سَمِعَهُ مِنْكُمْ يُنَادِي حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فَلْيُجِبْهُ وَلَوْ زَحْفًا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا
[Machine] "Do not mourn my death and pray for me to my Lord."
«لَا تُشْعِرُوا بِمَوْتِي أَحَدًا وسُلُّونِي إِلَى رَبِّي سَلًّا»
[Machine] "When he reached [an age of] maturity, and she saw what he was going through of weeping and staying awake, she called him and said, 'O my son, perhaps you have killed someone.' He said, 'Yes, O my mother, I have indeed killed a person.' She said, 'So who is this person, O my son, until we bear [the responsibility] to his family so that they may forgive you?' And by Allah, if they knew what you are going through of staying awake and weeping, then surely they would have shown you mercy.' He said, 'O my mother, it is my own self.'"
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ وَرَأَتْ مَا يَلْقَى مِنَ الْبُكَاءِ وَالسَهَرِ نَادَتْهُ فَقَالَتْ يَا بُنَيَّ لَعَلَّكَ قَتَلْتَ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا وَالِدَةُ قَدْ قَتَلْتُ قَتِيلًا فَقَالَتْ وَمَنْ هَذَا الْقَتِيلُ يَا بُنَيَّ حَتَّى نَتَحَمَّلَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَيُغْتَفَرَ لَكَ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَلْقَى مِنَ السَّهَرِ وَالْبُكَاءِ بَعْدُ لَقَدْ رَحِمُوكَ فَقَالَ «يَا وَالِدَةُ هِيَ نَفْسِي»
[Machine] Leave him so that he may repent, and then Allah may accept his repentance and grant him success in his deeds.
«ذَرُوهُ لَعَلَّهُ يَتُوبُ فَيَتُوبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَسْتَقْبِلُ الْعَمَلَ»
[Machine] About Rabi' ibn Khuthaym, "So let them laugh a little" [Surah At-Tawbah: 82] (about) the dunya and "And let them weep much" [Surah At-Tawbah: 82] (about) the hereafter.
عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ {فَلْيَضْحَكُوا قَلِيلًا} [التوبة 82] الدُّنْيَا {ولْيَبْكُوا كَثِيرًا} [التوبة 82] الْآخِرَةُ
[Machine] "This is his (reward) upon death and it is stored for him in the afterlife; Paradise. But as for if he is among the deniers, the misguided ones, then his abode is from scalding water and the blaze of Hell." [Surah Al-Waqi'ah, 92] He said, "This is his (punishment) upon death and it is stored for him in the afterlife; the Fire."
هَذَا لَهُ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَيُخَبَّأُ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ الْجَنَّةُ {وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ وتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ} [الواقعة 92] قَالَ هَذَا لَهُ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَيُخَبَّأُ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ النَّارُ
[Machine] The scholar said, "Indeed, if the servant mentions his Lord while his lips are sealed, he desires."
قَالَ الرَّبِيعُ «إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا شَاءَ ذَكَرَ رَبَّهُ ﷻ وَهُوَ ضَامٌّ شَفَتَيْهِ»
[Machine] "I saw Rabee'ah bin Kuthaym reciting from the Mus'haf (Quran) without moving his lips."
«رَأَيْتُ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ خُثَيْمٍ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْمُصْحَفِ وَلَا يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ»
[Machine] "That he called upon the poor from his companions, and they prepared food for him. He went to the mosque and gathered the poor from the community, and he brought them and fed them that food. His family said to him, 'Are these your companions?' He replied, 'Yes, these are my companions.'"
أَنْ أَدْعُوَ فُقَرَاءَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِي فَصَنَعُوا لَهُ طَعَامًا فَأَتَى الْمَسْجِدَ فَجَمَعَ فُقَرَاءَ مِنَ الزَّمْنَى فَأَتَى بِهِمْ فَأَطْعَمَهُمْ ذَلِكَ الطَّعَامَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَهْلُهُ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابُكَ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابِي»
«بَلْ طَوْعًا يَا رَبَّاهُ»
[Machine] As if it were a thrown garment, the birds come and fall on it.
فَكَأَنَّهُ ثَوْبٌ مَطْرُوحٌ فَتَجِيءُ الْعَصَافِيرُ فَتَقَعُ عَلَيْهِ
