49. al-Ḥasan b. Abū al-Ḥasan (3/5)

٤٩۔ أَخْبَارُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى ص ٣

[Machine] "And it is He who has made the night and the day as a means of alternation for whoever desires to be reminded or desires to be grateful." [Al-Furqan 62] He said, "Whoever is weakened by the night, then he will have strength during the day, and whoever is weakened during the day, then he will have strength during the night." he said, "The servant will continue to be in goodness as long as he says, 'He said, 'For Allah'' and when he does a deed, 'He did it for Allah.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٤٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي وَحَدَّثَنِي يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَشْهَبِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

{وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ خِلْفَةً لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًا} [الفرقان 62] قَالَ مَنْ عَجَزَ بِاللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّ لَهُ فِي النَّهَارِ مُسْتَعْتَبٌ وَمَنْ عَجَزَ فِي النَّهَارِ كَانَ لَهُ فِي اللَّيْلِ مُسْتَعْتَبٌ قَالَ وَلَا يَزَالُ الْعَبْدُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا إِذَا قَالَ قَالَ لِلَّهِ وَإِذَا عَمِلَ عَمِلَ لِلَّهِ ﷻ

[Machine] Hasan entered the mosque with his bed and sat next to a group of people who were talking. He listened to their conversation and then approached a bed and said, "O bed, I swear by Allah, these are nothing but people who have become tired of worship and have found speaking easier for them than actions. And their piety has decreased, so they speak."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٤٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا فَيَّاضُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا يُكَنَّى أَبَا أَيُّوبَ قَالَ

دَخَلَ الْحَسَنُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَمَعَهُ فَرْقَدٌ فَقَعَدَ إِلَى جَنْبِ حَلْقَةٍ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ فَنَصَتَ لِحَدِيثِهِمْ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى فَرْقَدٍ فَقَالَ يَا فَرْقَدُ وَاللَّهِ مَا هَؤُلَاءِ إِلَّا قَوْمٌ مَلُّوا الْعِبَادَةَ وَوَجَدُوا الْكَلَامَ أَهْوَنَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ وَقَلَّ وَرَعُهُمْ فَتَكَلَّمُوا

[Machine] "Reflection for an hour is better than standing the night."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٤٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«تَفَكُّرُ سَاعَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ قِيَامِ لَيْلَةٍ»

[Machine] I heard Al-Hassan saying, "Some people dislike consistency. By Allah, a believer should not work for a month or two, or a year or two. No, by Allah, Allah did not set a time limit for the work of a believer other than death."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٤٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي

سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ «أَبَى قَوْمٌ الْمُدَاوَمَةَ وَاللَّهِ مَا الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ شَهْرًا أَوْ شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ عَامًا أَوْ عَامَيْنِ لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِعَمَلِ الْمُؤْمِنِ أَجَلًا دُونَ الْمَوْتِ»

[Machine] "To his family he said three times, 'O family, there is little of you left.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٤٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ أَنْبَأَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ قَالَ كَانَ الْحَسَنُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ

لِأَهْلِهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ «يَا أَهْلَاهُ الثُّوِيُّ فِيكُمْ قَلِيلٌ»

[Machine] Al-Hasan said: "You will not find a believer except being pale, and you will not find a hypocrite except being darkened."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ شَوْذَبٍ

قَال قَالَ الْحَسَنُ «لَا تَلْقَى الْمُؤْمِنَ إِلَّا شَاحِبًا وَلَا تَلْقَى الْمُنَافِقَ إِلَّا وَابِصًا»

[Machine] "He used to say, 'Accuse your own opinions and desires in matters of religion, and advise the Book of Allah upon yourselves and your religion.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَوْنٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اتَّهِمُوا رَأْيَكُمْ وَأَهْوَاءَكُمْ عَلَى دِينِ اللَّهِ وَانْتَصِحُوا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ وَدِينِكُمْ»

[Machine] He used to say, "There are two delicious restaurants, one is operated by a man with his own hands and the other is carried on his back."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

كَانَ يَقُولُ «مَطْعَمَانِ طَيِّبَانِ رَجُلٌ يَعْمَلُ بِيَدِهِ وَآخَرُ يَحْمِلُ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ»

[Machine] Al-Hasan said, "Whoever builds above what is necessary for him, a collar will be put on him on the Day of Resurrection from seven earths."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ شَوْذَبٍ

قَال قَالَ الْحَسَنُ مَنْ بَنَى فَوْقَ مَا يَكْفِيهِ طُوِّقَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ  

ahmad-zuhd:1554ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad And Rawḥ > al-Aswad b. Shaybān > al-Faḍl > Rawḥ b. Thawr

[Machine] I said to al-Hasan, "Two men sought the dunya (worldly possessions) through lawful means. One of them succeeded in obtaining it, and he maintained ties of kinship and used it for himself. The other one focused on the dunya [and neglected other aspects of life]." He said, "The one who focused on the dunya is more beloved to me." I said, "O Abu Sa'id, he sought it through lawful means, and he succeeded in obtaining it and maintained ties of kinship and used it for himself." He said, "The one who focused on the dunya is more beloved to me."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ وَرَوْحٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ حَدَّثَنِي الْفَضْلُ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ رَجُلَانِ طَلَبَ أَحَدُهُمَا الدُّنْيَا بِحَلَالِهَا فَأَصَابَهَا وَوَصَلَ مِنْهَا الرَّحِمَ وَقَدَّمَ مِنْهَا لِنَفْسِهِ وَجَانَبَ الْآخَرُ الدُّنْيَا قَالَ أَحَبُّهُمَا إِلَيَّ الَّذِي جَانَبَ الدُّنْيَا قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ طَلَبَهَا بِحَلَالِهَا فَأَصَابَهَا فَوَصَلَ مِنْهَا رَحِمَهُ وَقَدَّمَ مِنْهَا لِنَفْسِهِ قَالَ أَحَبُّهُمَا إِلَيَّ الَّذِي جَانَبَ الدُّنْيَا  

ahmad-zuhd:1555ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad > Abū Kaʿb ʿAbd Rabbih Ṣāḥib al-Jurayrī > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] I heard Al-Hasan saying, "Indeed, the believer in this world is a stranger who does not despair from its humiliation, nor competes with its people in their honor. People find comfort in him while he is preoccupied. So, blessed is the servant who has earned a good livelihood and has given precedence to the favor of his day of poverty and neediness. Direct this favor where Allah has directed it, and do not throw it away here where it may harm you."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَعْبٍ عَبْدُ رَبِّهِ صَاحِبُ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ فِي الدُّنْيَا غَرِيبٌ لَا يَجْزَعُ مِنْ ذُلِّهَا وَلَا يُنَافِسُ أَهْلَهَا فِي عِزِّهَا النَّاسُ مِنْهُ فِي رَاحَةٍ وَنَفْسُهُ مِنْهُ فِي شُغْلٍ فَطُوبَى لِعَبْدٍ كَسَبَ طَيِّبًا وَقَدَّمَ الْفَضْلَ لِيَوْمِ فَقْرِهِ وَفَاقَتِهِ وَجِّهُوا هَذَا الْفَضْلَ حَيْثُ وَجَّهَهُ اللَّهُ وَلَا تُلْقُوهَا هَاهُنَا فِيمَا يَضُرُّكُمْ»

[Machine] In His saying, "Who show off" (those who pray), He said, "If they pray, they pray for showoff, and if they don't pray, they don't care about it."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ

فِي قَوْلِهِ ﷻ {الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ} قَالَ «إِنْ صَلَّاهَا صَلَّاهَا رِيَاءً وَإِنْ لَمْ يُصَلِّهَا لَمْ يُبَالِهَا»

[Machine] "Recognize the emigrants for their virtue, follow their footsteps, and beware of what people have newly introduced in their religion, for indeed, the worst of matters are those that are newly invented."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بْنُ أَبِي شُرَاعَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«اعْرَفُوا الْمُهَاجِرِينَ بِفَضْلِهِمْ وَاتَّبِعُوا آثَارَهُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمَا أَحْدَثَ النَّاسُ فِي دِينِهِمْ فَإِنَّ شَرَّ الْأُمُورِ الْمُحْدَثَاتُ»

[Machine] I was in the gathering of Al-Hasan when a man started crying and his voice got louder. Al-Hasan said, "Indeed, the devil is crying right now."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ فِي حَلْقَةِ الْحَسَنِ فَجَعَلَ رَجُلٌ يَبْكِي وَارْتَفَعَ صَوْتُهُ فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ «إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَيُبْكِي هَذَا الْآنَ»

[Machine] "Exhort people through your actions, not your words."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٥٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حَمَّادِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«عِظِ النَّاسَ بِفِعْلِكَ وَلَا تَعِظْهُمْ بِقَوْلِكَ»

[Machine] I heard Al-Hasan say, "He swears by Allah that he has never been moderate."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ «يَحْلِفُ بِاللَّهِ مَا عَالَ مُقْتَصِدٌ قَطُّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1561ʿAbdullāh from my father > al-Haytham from my father > al-Ḥasan Liʾaṣḥābih Yā Ibn Ādam > Matá Yā Ahlāh Ghaddūnī Yā Ahlāh ʿAshhūnī Yūshak And al-Lah Yughaddá Bik Yūshak Wa-al-Lah Yurāḥ Bik Amā > Illā Akl Wabalʿ Washarṭ Sharṭ Aḥmaq Innamā Tajmaʿ Mālak Liāmraʾah Tadhhab Bih > Zawjihā or a man Yadhhab Bih > Zawjatih Faʾin Āstaṭaʿt > Takūn Akhsar al-Thalāthah Naṣīb Fāfʿalqāl > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] I heard my father say that Al-Hasan said to his companions, "O son of Adam, how long will you stay preoccupied with worldly matters? By Allah, it will eat you, by Allah, it will make you weary, it will feed you, and it will provide you rest. But it is nothing more than eating, drinking, and desires. How foolish you are! You only gather wealth for a woman who will take it to her husband, or for a man who will take it to his wife. If you can afford to lose one-third of your earnings, then do so."

He said, "I also heard Al-Hasan say, 'O son of Adam, my wealth is my wealth. Do you have any of your wealth left except what you have eaten and used up, what you have worn and worn out, or what you have given and dispensed?'"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ لِأَصْحَابِهِ «يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ إِلَى مَتَى يَا أَهْلَاهُ غَدُّونِي يَا أَهْلَاهُ عَشُّونِي يُوشَكُ وَاللَّهِ يُغَدَّى بِكَ يُوشَكُ وَاللَّهِ يُرَاحُ بِكَ أَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَكْلًا وَبَلْعًا وَشَرْطًا شَرْطًا أَحْمَقُ إِنَّمَا تَجْمَعُ مَالَكَ لِامْرَأَةٍ تَذْهَبُ بِهِ إِلَى زَوْجِهَا أَوْ رَجُلٍ يَذْهَبُ بِهِ إِلَى زَوْجَتِهِ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ أَخْسَرَ الثَّلَاثَةِ نَصِيبًا فَافْعَلْ»

قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ: «ابْنَ آدَمَ مَالِي مَالِي §هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ إِلَّا مَا أَكَلْتَ فَأَفْنَيْتَ أَوْ لَبِسْتَ فَأَبْلَيْتَ أَوْ أَعْطَيْتَ فَأَمْضَيْتَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1562ʿAbdullāh > al-Ḥasan b. ʿĪsá > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak > Muḥammad b. Muṭarrif > Abū Ḥāzim > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Saʿīd b. Yarbūʿ > Mālik al-Dārī > ʿUmar b.

[Machine] "And he said, He said to you, O commander of the faithful, make use of this in some of your needs. He said, May Allah have mercy on him and bless him. Then he said, O servant, go with these seven and with these five to so-and-so, and with these five to so-and-so, until you have fulfilled them. So the boy returned to Umar and informed him, and he found that Mu'adh ibn Jabal had prepared the same amount for him. So he said, Go with it to Mu'adh ibn Jabal and stay in the house until you see what he does. So he went with it to Mu'adh ibn Jabal and he said, He said to you, O commander of the faithful, make use of this in some of your needs. He said, May Allah have mercy on him and bless him. Then he said, O servant, go to the house of so-and-so with this. And the wife of Mu'adh came out and said, By Allah, we are poor. So give us [charity]. And there was nothing left in the cloth except two dinars. So he threw them to her and the boy returned to Umar and informed him. Umar was delighted with that and said, "Indeed, they are brothers, some of them are from others."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عِيسَى أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أَنْبَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُطَرِّفٍ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَرْبُوعٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ الدَّارِيِّ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَخَذَ أَرْبَعَمِائَةِ دِينَارٍ فَجَعَلَهَا فِي صُرَّةٍ فَقَالَ لِلْغُلَامِ اذْهَبْ بِهَا إِلَى أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ ثُمَّ تَلَبَّثْ سَاعَةً فِي الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَنْظُرَ مَا يَصْنَعُ فَذَهَبَ الْغُلَامُ إِلَيْهِ

وَقَالَ يَقُولُ لَكَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اجْعَلْ هَذَا فِي بَعْضِ حَاجَتِكَ قَالَ وَصَلَهُ اللَّهُ وَرَحِمَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَعَالَيْ يَا جَارِيَةُ اذْهَبِي بِهَذِهِ السَّبْعَةِ وَبِهَذِهِ الْخَمْسَةِ إِلَى فُلَانٍ وَبِهَذِهِ الْخَمْسَةِ إِلَى فُلَانٍ حَتَّى أَنْفَذَهَا فَرَجَعَ الْغُلَامُ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَوَجَدَهُ قَدْ أَعَدَّ مِثْلَهَا لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهَا إِلَى مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ وَتَلَبَّثْ فِي الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَنْظُرَ مَا يَصْنَعُ فَذَهَبَ بِهَا إِلَى مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ فَقَالَ يَقُولُ لَكَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اجْعَلْ هَذِهِ فِي بَعْضِ حَاجَتِكَ فَقَالَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ وَوَصَلَهُ تَعَالَيْ يَا جَارِيَةُ اذْهَبِي إِلَى بَيْتِ فُلَانٍ بِكَذَا فَاطَّلَعَتْ امْرَأَةُ مُعَاذٍ فَقَالَتْ وَاللَّهِ نَحْنُ مَسَاكِينُ فَأَعْطِنَا وَلَمْ يَبْقَ فِي الْخِرْقَةِ إِلَّا دِينَارَانِ فَرَمَى بِهِمَا إِلَيْهَا وَرَجَعَ الْغُلَامُ إِلَى عُمَرَ ؓ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَسُرَّ بِذَلِكَ وَقَالَ «إِنَّهُمْ أُخْوَةٌ بَعْضُهُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍ ؓ »

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبَانَ بْنِ صَالِحِ بْنِ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ سَدُوسٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ

«جَلِيسُ الصِّدْقِ مِثْلُ الْعَطَّارِ إِنْ لَمْ يُصِبْكَ عَبَقَكَ مِنْ رِيحِهِ»

[Machine] "A time will come upon people when the devil will dwell in the eyes of the people, so whoever wants to cry, let them cry."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ زَاذَانَ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ زَاذَانَ قَالَ

«يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَسْكُنُ [223] الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْكِيَ بَكَى»

[Machine] That my neighbors would become envious and ask, "Where did he get it from?"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٥أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أَلْبَسَ الثَّوْبَ الْجَدِيدَ مَخَافَةَ

أَنْ يَحْدُثَ لِجِيرَانِي الْحَسَدُ وَيَقُولُونَ مِنْ أَيْنَ هُوَ لَهُ

[Machine] "That they should feed them with food, in exchange for the favor of leaving that supplication for them for food? He said, their feeding is more beloved to me. So if he wishes, let him provide for them and say, 'I have given them food.' It was said to Sufyan, he says, 'I have dined,' meaning by his saying yesterday before that? He said, yes."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرٍ بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ الْمُعَافَى عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَزُورُهُ إِخْوَانُهُ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ فَيَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَعْلَمُوا صَوْمَهُ وَهُوَ يُحِبُّ

أَنْ يَطْعَمُوا عِنْدَهُ فِي أَيِّ ذَلِكَ الْفَضْلُ فِي تَرْكِ ذَلِكَ الدُّعَاءِ لَهُمْ بِالطَّعَامِ؟ قَالَ إِطْعَامُهُمْ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ فَإِنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَقُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلْيَقُلْ قَدْ أَصَبْتُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ قَالَ وَقِيلَ لِسُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ قَدْ تَغَدَّيْتُ يَعْنِي بِقَوْلِهِ أَمْسُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[Machine] I am fasting, then at the end of the day I saw someone eating. He was asked about it, and he said, "I fast three days of every month, and that is the fasting of a lifetime." Abdullah said, "I found in the book of Bishr that he asked Wakee' about that, and he said, 'When one wants to have the reward that comes from fasting for three days, it is sufficient for him to say, "I am fasting" even though he is not fasting.' He said, 'If he intends to do so, then there is no harm.' And I asked Mu'afa about a person passing by people playing chess, is it okay for him to greet them? He said, 'No, for Sufyan says to me, "Greet them and give them orders."' Mu'afa said, 'If he does not give them orders, then no.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ وَكِيعٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ أَنَّ أَبَا ذَرٍّ دُعِيَ إِلَى طَعَامٍ فَقَالَ

إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَرُؤِيَ مِنْ آخِرِ النَّهَارِ يَأْكُلُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَصُومُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ فَذَلِكَ صِيَامُ الدَّهْرِ 1568 حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ وَكِيعًا عَنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِذَا أَرَادَ الْأَثَرَ الَّذِي جَاءَ مِنْ صِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ تَرَى ذَلِكَ يُجْزِئُهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ وَلَيْسَ بِصَائِمٍ قَالَ إِذَا ضَبَطَ النِّيَّةَ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَسَأَلْتُ الْمُعَافَى عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَمُرُّ بِمَنْ يَلْعَبُ بِالشِّطْرَنْجِ تَرَى لَهُ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ؟ قَالَ لَا إِنَّ سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ لِيُسَلِّمْ وَيَأْمُرْ قَالَ الْمُعَافَى إِنْ لَمْ يَأْمُرْ فَلَا

[Machine] I asked Al-Mua'afa, "Did Sufyan used to say that anyone you are afraid of their food spoiling your heart, do not love them?" He replied, "Yes."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٦٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ بِشْرٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ الْمُعَافَى أَكَانَ سُفْيَانُ يَقُولُ كُلُّ مَنْ تَخَوَّفْتَ مِنْ طَعَامِهِ أَنْ يُفْسِدَ عَلَيْكَ قَلْبَكَ فَلَا تُحِبَّهُ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[Machine] "Once you hear something good, act upon it so that you may be counted among its people, even if it is just once."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ قَيْسٍ الْمُلَائِيَّ يَقُولُ «إِذَا

سَمِعْتَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْخَيْرِ فَاعْمَلْ بِهِ تَكُنْ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَلَوْ مَرَّةً»  

ahmad-zuhd:1571ʿAbdullāh > Naṣr b. ʿAlī > Nūḥ b. Qays > ʿAwn b. Abū Shaddād

[Machine] "Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, created a white land with the rising of the sun, its brightness shining forth. In it, there is a people who are unaware that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, is ever disobeyed."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَوْنُ بْنُ أَبِي شَدَّادٍ قَالَ

«إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى خَلَقَ بِمَسْقَطِ الشَّمْسِ أَرْضًا بَيْضَاءَ نُورُهَا بَيَاضُهَا فِيهَا قَوْمٌ لَمْ يَدْرُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عُصِيَ قَطُّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1572ʿAbdullāh > Ukhbirt > Sayyār > al-Ḥarth b. Nabhān > Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ > And ʾAṣḥābāh Dhahab Aṣḥābī

[Machine] I said, "May Allah have mercy on you, is it not the case that there are young people who recite the Quran, stand for prayer at night, fast during the day, perform Hajj, and recite?" He then spit and said, "Arrogance has corrupted them."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَرْثُ بْنُ نَبْهَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ وَاسِعٍ يَقُولُ وَأَصْحَابَاهُ ذَهَبَ أَصْحَابِي قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ نَشَأَ شَبَابٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَقُومُونَ اللَّيْلَ وَيَصُومُونَ النَّهَارَ وَيَحُجُّونَ وَيَقْرَءُونَ؟ قَالَ فَبَزَقَ وَقَالَ «أَفْسَدَهُمْ الْعُجْبُ»

[Machine] Then, he said, "I praise you, my God, as I approach you when I have no food but this and that."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُرَجَّى بْنُ وَادِعٍ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَيُّوبُ بْنُ وَائِلٍ الرَّاسِبِيُّ يَا مُرَجَّى لَا تَهْتَمَّ لِلدُّنْيَا وَاهْتَمَّ لِلْآخِرَةِ فَإِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ أَصَابَتْهُ حَاجَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ فَخَرَجَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَدُلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ كِيسُ دَرَاهِمَ فَسَقَطَ عَلَى كَتِفِهِ فَهُوَ يُنْفِقُ مِنْهُ زَمَانًا وَرُبَّمَا انْقَلَبَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ فَيُوجِعُ جَنْبَهُ 1574 حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا غالب قال رأيت يزيد الضبي يأكل خبزًا وملحًا درشت فقلت له

فقال إني أحمد إليك إلهي إذ يأتي على كذا وكذا ما لي طعام غيره  

ahmad-zuhd:1575ʿAbdullāh > Ukhbirt > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Ṭālib > Faragh Yazīd al-Ḍabbī Yawm from Qaṣaṣih Farānī

[Machine] "How are you, Abdullah? Why do I see you sad?" He said, "I have a debt." He asked, "How much is it?" I said, "Fifty dirhams." He said, "Ah! My Lord, if it were with your brother, he would have paid it off for you." Then he said, "You are sad over fifty dirhams, while I have a debt of one thousand dirhams that I don't have the means to pay." It was then said to him, "O Abu Maudood, perhaps this is better for you." He asked, "And how is that?" I said, "It is more intense in your sorrow and supplication." He said, "Then I hope (for that)." Then Yazid died and his debt was settled after his death.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا طَالِبٌ قَالَ فَرَغَ يَزِيدُ الضَّبِّيُّ يَوْمًا مِنْ قَصَصِهِ فَرَآنِي فَقَالَ

كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ مَا لِي أَرَاكَ حَزِينًا قَالَ قُلْتُ مِنْ دَيْنٍ عَلَيَّ قَالَ كَمْ هُوَ؟ قُلْتُ خَمْسُونَ دِرْهَمًا قَالَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّي لَوْ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ أَخِيكَ لَقَضَاهَا عَنْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَحْزَنُ مِنْ خَمْسِينَ وَعَلَيَّ أَلْفَا دِرْهَمٍ لَيْسَ لَهَا وَجْهٌ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا مَوْدُودٍ عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ خَيْرًا لَكَ قَالَ وَكَيْفَ؟ قُلْتُ أَشَدُّ لِحُزْنِكَ وَتَضَرُّعِكَ قَالَ فَأَنَا أَرْجُو قَالَ فَمَاتَ يَزِيدُ فَقُضِيَتْ عَنْهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ  

ahmad-zuhd:1576ʿAbdullāh > ʿAlī b. Muslim > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Ḥawshab > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The east and the west will be conquered for my nation, but their workers will be in the Fire, except for those who fear Allah and fulfill their trust."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا حَوْشَبٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «سَتُفْتَحُ مَشَارِقُ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبُهَا عَلَى أُمَّتِي إِلَّا وَعُمَّالُهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّقَى اللَّهَ وَأَدَّى الْأَمَانَةَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1577ʿAbdullāh > ʿAlī b. Muslim > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > ʿAnbasah al-Khawwāṣ > Qatādah

[Machine] Moses son of Imran, ﷺ , said: "O Lord, you are in the heavens and we are on the earth, so what is the sign of Your anger and Your satisfaction?" He said, "If I use your best among you, it is a sign of my satisfaction, and if I use your worst among you, it is a sign of my anger."

Abu Abdul Rahman said: A man came to Abdullah bin Sulaiman and it was said to him: "Indeed, he is indeed." So he looked at him and then remained silent and left. It was said: "This is his condition." He said, "If he is truly ascetic as you claim, then what does he need from me?"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَنْبَسَةُ الْخَوَّاصُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ قَالَ

مُوسَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يَا رَبِّ أَنْتَ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَنَحْنُ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَمَا عَلَامَةُ غَضَبِكَ مِنْ رِضَاكَ؟ قَالَ «إِذَا اسْتَعْمَلْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ خِيَارَكُمْ فَهُوَ عَلَامَةُ رِضَائِي وَإِذَا اسْتَعْمَلْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ شِرَارَكُمْ فَهُوَ عَلَامَةُ سَخَطِي»

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِيهِ: إِنَّهُ وَإِنَّهُ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ سَكَتَ فَمَضَى فَقِيلَ: إِنَّ هَذَا مِنْ حَالِهِ فَقَالَ: «§إِنْ كَانَ زَاهِدًا كَمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا يَصْنَعُ عِنْدِي»

[Machine] "He either gains or remains silent and concedes."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ بَعْضِ الْبَصْرِيِّينَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قَالَ «رَحِمَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا قَالَ

فَغَنِمَ أَوْ سَكَتَ فَسَلِمَ»

[Machine] Concerning Al-Hasan's saying in regards to the verse "And We send not the signs except as warning" [Surah Al-Isra: 59], he said, "It is the sudden death."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَيْفٍ

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ فِي قَوْلِهِ {وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا تَخْوِيفًا} [الإسراء 59] قَالَ «الْمَوْتُ الذَّرِيعِ»

[Machine] By Allah, these are not the most difficult days for Muslims, as they are days in which their lifespans are shortened and reminders are made of what they have forgotten from their appointments, so their sins are forgiven.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ ذُكِرَ الْوَجَعُ فَقَالَ

«أَمَا وَاللَّهِ مَا هِيَ بِأَسَرِّ أَيَّامِ الْمُسْلِمِ أَيَّامٍ قُورِبَ لَهُ فِيهَا مِنْ [225] أَجَلِهِ وَذُكِّرَ فِيهَا مَا نَسِيَ مِنْ مَعَادِهِ فَكُفِّرَ بِهَا عَنْهُ خَطَايَاهُ»

[Machine] "A man commits a sin, and he never forgets it, and he continues to be afraid of it until he enters paradise."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ أَنْبَأَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُذْنِبُ الذَّنْبَ فَمَا يَنْسَاهُ وَمَا يَزَالُ مُتَخَوِّفًا مِنْهُ حَتَّى يَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1582ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yazīd > Abū al-Ashhab

[Machine] On the authority of Al-Hasan regarding His saying ﷻ, "And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily." (Surah Al-Furqan, 63). The scholars have said: those who are not ignorant, and even if they are treated with ignorance, they forgive.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ فِي قَوْلِهِ ﷻ {وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا} [الفرقان 63] قَالَ حُلَمَاءُ لَا يَجْهَلُونَ وَإِنْ جُهِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَفَرُوا  

ahmad-zuhd:1583ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > Hishām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] Whenever his grant was mentioned, he would give it to the family of so-and-so and so-and-so, until his son would say to him, "You have children, so you should keep something for them."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ عَطَاؤُهُ حَثَا لِآلِ فُلَانٍ وَآلِ فُلَانٍ حَتَّى يَقُولَ لَهُ ابْنُهُ «إِنَّ لَكَ عِيَالًا فَيَطْرَحُ إِلَيْهِ مَا بَقِيَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1584ʿAbdullāh > Hārūn > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Maṭar al-Warrāq

[Machine] I went to al-Hasan and said, "O Abu Sa'id, I have come to you, and by Allah, I only barely made it to you due to the severity of the filth beneath my feet and the hardships upon my head." Then al-Hasan said, "O rain, indeed this truth is heavy, and the people have strived and faced many of their desires. And by Allah, only those who recognize its virtue and hope for its outcome are able to follow this truth."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا مَطَرٌ الْوَرَّاقُ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ الْحَسَنَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ أَتَيْتُكَ وَاللَّهِ مَا كِدْتُ أَقْطَعُكَ إِلَّا فِي شِدَّةِ الْوَحْلِ تَحْتَ قَدَمَيَّ وَالْمَتَاعِبِ عَلَى رَأْسِي فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ «يَا مَطَرُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْحَقَّ ثَقِيلٌ وَقَدْ جَهَدَ النَّاسَ وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ شَهَوَاتِهِمْ وَإِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ مَا يَسِيرُ عَلَى هَذَا الْحَقِّ إِلَّا مَنْ عَرَفَ فَضْلَهُ وَرَجَا عَاقِبَتَهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1585ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > Hishām > al-Ḥasan > Qīl Lah Yā Abū Saʿīd Alā Taghsil Qamīṣak

[Machine] "I see the matter as nothing but more urgent than that."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ قِيلَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ أَلَا تَغْسِلُ قَمِيصَكَ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ

«مَا أَرَى الْأَمْرَ إِلَّا أَعْجَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ»

[Machine] "Son of Adam, indeed you are just days, and whenever a day passes, part of you passes away."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنْبَأَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ خُرَاسَانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«ابْنَ آدَمَ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ أَيَّامٌ وَكُلَّمَا ذَهَبَ يَوْمٌ ذَهَبَ بَعْضُكَ»

[Machine] On the authority of Al-Hasan regarding His saying {So We revived him to a good life} [An-Nahl 97], he said, "We provide him with contentment."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ فِي قَوْلِهِ ﷻ {فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً} [النحل 97] قَالَ «نَرْزُقُهُ قَنَاعَةً»  

ahmad-zuhd:1588ʿAbdullāh > Abū Maʿmar > Hishām > Manṣūr

[Machine] When Al-Hasan traveled and the people gave him their expenses, he would go with them and give something to the person who provided the expenses, in addition to what they gave him.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ

كَانَ الْحَسَنُ إِذَا سَافَرَ وَأَخْرَجَ الْقَوْمُ نَفَقَاتِهِمْ أَخْرَجَ مَعَهُمْ مِثْلَ الَّذِي أَنْفَقُوا ثُمَّ يَدُسُّ إِلَى صَاحِبِ النَّفَقَةِ شَيْئًا سِوَى مَا أَعْطَاهُمْ  

ahmad-zuhd:1589ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > ʿAbdullāh b. al-ʿAyzār > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] "Lying is the essence of hypocrisy."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٨٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«الْكَذِبُ جِمَاعُ النِّفَاقِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1590ʿAbdullāh > Hārūn b. ʿAbdullāh > Abū Usāmah > Sulaymān b. al-Mughīrah > Yūnus b. ʿUbayd

[Machine] Al Hasan said, "A person remains on the right path as long as he knows what corrupts his actions." Yūnus said, "Indeed, among them are those who are overcome by their desires and among them are those who realize that they are upon the truth."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ

قَالَ الْحَسَنُ لَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَلِمَ بِالَّذِي يُفْسِدُ عَلَيْهِ عَمَلَهُ قَالَ قَالَ يُونُسُ إِنَّ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ تَغْلِبُهُ شَهْوَتُهُ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَرَى أَنَّهُ عَلَى الْحَقِّ  

ahmad-zuhd:1591ʿAbdullāh > Hārūn > Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb > Sufyān al-Thawrī > Salamah b. Kuhayl

[Machine] I have not seen anyone seek the face of Allah except for these three: Ata', Tawus, and Mujahid.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ قَالَ

مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا يَطْلُبُ بِالْعِلْمِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ ﷻ إِلَّا هَؤُلَاءِ الثَّلَاثَةَ يَعْنِي [226] عَطَاءً وَطَاوُسًا وَمُجَاهِدًا  

ahmad-zuhd:1592ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm > Yūnus

[Machine] Al-Hasan said, "Verily the believer, by Allah, does not start his day except in sadness, and does not end it except in sadness." Yunus said, "So it was as if Al-Hasan was a man who had been afflicted with a calamity."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنْبَأَنَا يُونُسُ قَالَ

قَالَ الْحَسَنُ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ وَاللَّهِ مَا يُصْبِحُ إِلَّا حَزِينًا وَلَا يُمْسِي إِلَّا حَزِينًا قَالَ يُونُسُ فَكَانَ الْحَسَنُ لَا تَكَادُ تَلْقَاهُ إِلَّا وَكَأَنَّهُ رَجُلٌ قَدْ أُصِيبَ بِمُصِيبَةٍ  

ahmad-zuhd:1593ʿAbdullāh from my father > Aswad b. ʿĀmir > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] The believer laughed; it is only a moment of carelessness.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«ضَحِكُ الْمُؤْمِنِ إِنَّمَا هُوَ غَفْلَةٌ مِنْهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1594ʿAbdullāh from my father > Shujāʿ b. al-Walīd > Sufyān b. Saʿīd > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] Indeed, the believer does not wake up except in a state of fear, and nothing rectifies him except that state. This is because he is between two sins, a past sin that he doesn't know how Allah will deal with, and a future sin or another one that he doesn't know what is decreed for him regarding it.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَا يُصْبِحُ إِلَّا خَائِفًا وَلَا يُصْلِحُهُ إِلَّا ذَاكَ؛ لِأَنَّهُ بَيْنَ ذَنْبَيْنِ ذَنْبٌ مَضَى لَا يَدْرِي كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ اللَّهُ فِيهِ وَآجِلٌ أَوْ قَالَ آخَرُ لَا يَدْرِي مَا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ  

ahmad-zuhd:1595ʿAbdullāh from my father > Shujāʿ b. al-Walīd > Yazīd b. Tawbah > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] "Whoever knows his Lord, blessed and exalted, loves Him. And whoever contemplates the world becomes disinterested in it. And the believer does not joke around until he becomes heedless, and when he reflects, he becomes sad."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ تَوْبَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«مَنْ عَرَفَ رَبَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَحَبَّهُ وَمَنْ أَبْصَرَ الدُّنْيَا زَهِدَ فِيهَا وَالْمُؤْمِنُ لَا يَلْهُو حَتَّى يَغْفَلَ وَإِذَا فَكَّرَ حَزِنَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:1596ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yazīd b. Hārūn > Abū ʿUbayd al-Nājī

[Machine] "Welcome and greetings to all of you. May Allah bless you with peace and grant us and you a residence of peace. This is a good welcome sign if you are patient and truthful. I swear that your luck will not be diminished by this news. May Allah have mercy on you to hear it with this ear and let it come out from this ear. Whoever has seen Muhammad ﷺ has seen a guiding fragrance, without placing a brick on top of another or a reed on top of another. Rather, knowledge was raised for him, so he uncovered it with truth, the truth. O people of Ta'ruj, have you come to the Lord of the Kaaba as if you are on the same matter?"  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٩٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ النَّاجِيُّ قَالَ دَخَلْنَا عَلَى الْحَسَنِ نَعُودُهُ فِي مَرَضِهِ فَقَالَ

«مَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ وَأَهْلًا بِكُمْ حَيَّاكُمُ اللَّهُ بِالسَّلَامِ وَأَحَلَّنَا وَإِيَّاكُمْ دَارَ السَّلَامِ هَذِهِ عَلَانِيَةُ حَسَنَةٍ إِنْ صَبَرْتُمْ وَصَدَقْتُمْ وَأُقْسِمُ لَا يَكُونَنَّ حَظُّكُمْ مِنْ هَذَا الْخَبَرِ رَحِمَكُمُ اللَّهُ أَنْ تَسْمَعُوهُ بِهَذِهِ الْأُذُنِ فَيَخْرُجَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُذُنِ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ رَأَى مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ فَقَدْ رَأَى غَادِيًا رَائِحًا لَمْ يَضَعْ لَبِنَةً عَلَى لَبِنَةٍ وَلَا قَصَبَةً عَلَى قَصَبَةٍ وَلَكِنْ رُفِعَ لَهُ عِلْمٌ فَشَمَّرَ إِلَيْهِ الْوَحَا الْوَحَا ثُمَّ النَّجَا النَّجَا عَلَامَا تَعْرُجُونَ أَتَيْتُمْ وَرَبَّ الْكَعْبَةِ كَأَنَّكُمْ وَالْأَمْرَ معًا»
