ahmad-zuhd:1572ʿAbdullāh > Ukhbirt > Sayyār > al-Ḥarth b. Nabhān > Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ > And ʾAṣḥābāh Dhahab Aṣḥābī

[Machine] I said, "May Allah have mercy on you, is it not the case that there are young people who recite the Quran, stand for prayer at night, fast during the day, perform Hajj, and recite?" He then spit and said, "Arrogance has corrupted them."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٧٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَرْثُ بْنُ نَبْهَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ وَاسِعٍ يَقُولُ وَأَصْحَابَاهُ ذَهَبَ أَصْحَابِي قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ نَشَأَ شَبَابٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَقُومُونَ اللَّيْلَ وَيَصُومُونَ النَّهَارَ وَيَحُجُّونَ وَيَقْرَءُونَ؟ قَالَ فَبَزَقَ وَقَالَ «أَفْسَدَهُمْ الْعُجْبُ»
