19. Chapter of ʿAyn (Male) (120/147)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There will not come upon you except a few moments until the traveler will walk between Mecca and Al-Hira, and no one will take hold of her reins, and it will not come upon any of you except a few moments until a man will walk with a handful of gold in his hand and he will not find anyone to accept it, and there is not between him and Allah an interpreter. So whoever is able to protect himself from the Fire, even with half a date, then let him do so."
[Machine] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do not ask you about obeying those who fear and reform, but rather about the one who does wrong and causes harm." He said, "Fear Allah and listen and obey."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have dogs that we send on hunting, and then we eat from what they catch. Is this permissible?" He said, "Yes."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I ask you about a food that I leave not due to dislike, but out of shyness." He said, "Do not leave anything (food) that would benefit the Christians."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "O 'Adi, do not belittle my companions, for you will open the treasures of Kisra (the Persian Emperor) and bring out the destitute from the town of Hira and you will distribute this wealth in the first part of the day, and in the last part no one will accept it." 'Adi said, "I have seen two of them, and the third is to come."
[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if a person in a state of janabah can sleep? He said, "He should perform ablution for prayer."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A time will come upon people where it will be difficult for a person to give out his zakat (charity) from his wealth."
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever swears an oath on the property of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him.' It was asked, 'Who should abandon it, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Then Paradise belongs to him.'"
[Machine] He threw a stone at a woman and she died, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed him to Tabuk and asked him about his deed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him, "You should take care of her and not inherit her."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ protected every corner of the city as a sanctuary, where no tree would be struck and no support would be leaned upon except for a stick used for pushing.

[Machine] Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind."
[Machine] I don't have anything to give you, but I have a shield in my cuff. It is yours, but the Arab man got angry and swore not to give it. So, the Prophet said, "I only came to ask you about a servant to help me with it." The Prophet said, "I have ordered you to take my shield, and by Allah, it is more beloved to me than three slave men." The Arab man became interested in it and said, "I accept your offer. Your favor is good." Then 'Adi said, "If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say, ‘Whoever makes an oath and sees better than it, let him do what is best, as long as he has given you.’"
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever takes an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do that which is better and atone for his oath."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever takes an oath and sees something better than it, he should do what is better and break his oath."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, should leave it and do what is better."
When anyone amongst you takes an oath, but he finds (something) better than that he should expiate (the breaking of the oath), and do that which is better. (Using translation from Muslim 1651c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Whoever takes an oath, and then sees something better than it, should do what is better."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him break his oath and do what is better, and he will be expiated for his oath."
[Machine] I do not have anything to give you except my shield and forgiveness. So, I wrote to my family asking them to give it to you, but they refused. Then, my enemy became angry and said, "By Allah, I will not give you anything." Then, the man was pleased and said, "By Allah, if I had not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever swears an oath to do something and sees that it is more righteous to do something else, then he should do what is more righteous, but he should not break his oath.'"
[Machine] Two men came to the Prophet ﷺ and delivered a sermon. One of them said, "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger is rightly guided, and whoever disobeys them has gone astray." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Stand up, for you are a terrible speaker."

[Machine] A man testified in the presence of the Prophet, ﷺ , saying: "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has been rightly guided, and whoever disobeys them has gone astray." The Prophet, ﷺ , said: "Be quiet, for how bad a speaker you are." He disliked what the man said, and whoever disobeys them.
[Machine] I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in the mosque. The people said, "This is Adi bin Hatim, and he used to be a Christian." I came to him without any security or script, and when I was given the opportunity, he held my hand and said, "I hope that Allah will unite his hand with mine." He then walked with me until we met a woman and a child with her. They said, "We have a need from you." So he went with her and fulfilled her need, then he took me by the hand until we reached his house. I was given a cushion to sit on, and I sat in front of him. He praised and glorified Allah, and then said, "What led you to think that no one is worthy of being worshiped except Allah?" Then he spoke for a while and said, "Does it surprise you or does it harm you that Allah is said to be greater? Do you know anything greater than Allah?" I said, "No." He said, "Verily, the Jews are despised, and the Christians are astray." I said, "I am a Hanif (upright) Muslim." I saw his face light up with joy. Then he ordered me to go to a man from the Ansar, and I went to him in the middle of the day. While I was with him in the evening, some people came to him wearing woolen clothes from this Nimar. He prayed, and then he stood and advised them. He said, "A bushel or half a bushel, even if it is with a handful, should be used to protect one's face from the heat of Hellfire. Even if it is with half a date, one of you should meet Allah with something to say. Did I not make for you hearing and sight?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Did I not make for you wealth and children?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then where are those things that you have prepared for yourselves?" He looked in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and he did not find anything that would protect his face. So let one of you protect his face from the Fire, even if it is with half a date. If he cannot find that, then with a good word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah is your Helper and Provider until the Day of Resurrection. The distance between Al-Tharib and Al-Hira is not far, and what is feared most for its livestock is theft. So I started to say to myself, "Where are the thieves of Thay?"

[Machine] The horses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came with a scorpion, so they took my aunt and some people. When they came to him (the Prophet) ﷺ , they made way for him. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, the one who has come has left, the child has been severed, and I am an old woman and I have no one to serve me. So may Allah bless whoever helps me." He said, "Who is your guest?" She said, "Adi ibn Hatim." He said, "Which one fled from Allah and His Messenger?" She said, "So may Allah bless whoever helps me." So when Adi returned, there was a man with him who seemed to be Ali. He said, "Salih, carry her loads." She said, "So I asked him and he ordered a donkey. I said, 'You have done what your father used to do.'" She said, "Go to him as a person in need or as a monk, for so and so came to him and he was affected by him, and so and so came to him and he was affected by him. So I went to him, and there was a woman and children or a child with him. He mentioned their relation to the Prophet ﷺ , so I knew that he was not a king like Khosrau and Caesar. He said, "O Adi, what prevents you from saying 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah)? Is there any god other than Allah?" He said, "What prevents you from saying 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the greatest)? Is there anything greater than Allah?" So I embraced Islam, and I saw his face light up and he said, "Indeed, the Jews are those who are cursed, and indeed, the Christians are those who are astray." Then some people came to him and praised Allah, and he praised Him. Then he said, "Now, O people, it is for you to be humble before His grace, as a person humbles himself before a measure of food with a measured handful." Shu'bah said, "And most of what I know is that he said with a date, splitting a date. Indeed, one of you will meet Allah and He will say, 'Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not grant you wealth and children? So what have you brought?' So he will look to his right, left, front, and behind him, but he will not find anything. So he will not fear the Fire except by Allah's face. So fear the Fire, even if it is with half a date. And if you do not find that, then with a good word. Indeed, I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah will help you and give you victory, or He will open up for you until the she-camel enters between two mountains, the fear of which is greater, that Thamud feared."

A man from the Ansar, who was dark-skinned and it is as if I can see him now, stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, consider me exempt from your statement.' The Prophet asked, 'What is the matter?' The man said, 'I heard you say what you said earlier.' The Prophet then clarified, 'I say that whoever we employ for a task, whether they bring little or a lot, they will be given what is due to them, and whatever is forbidden will be avoided.'"

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority and he conceals from us a needle or something smaller than that, it would be misappropriation (of public funds) and will (have to) produce it on the Day of Judgment. The narrator says: A dark-complexioned man from the Ansar stood up - I can visualise him still - and said: Messenger of Allah, take back from me your assignment. He said: What has happened to you? The man said: I have heard you say so and so. He said: I say that (even) now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority, he should bring everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom he should take, and he should restrain himself from taking that which is forbidden. [Machine] Utba ibn Ghazwan died in the year seventeen on the route to Basra, serving as a governor for Umar ibn Al-Khattab. His age was fifty-seven years old, although it was said that he died at the age of twenty. He was the one who settled Basra, organized its houses, and built its mosque. He also initiated the postal service, and his rule over Basra lasted for six months before Umar ibn Al-Khattab appointed someone else to govern it.

[Machine] "The world has crumbled, leaving only fragments like the dripping of a water jug poured by its owner. And indeed, behind you lies a home, so move towards it with the best of what you possess. By Allah, I have witnessed myself as the seventh out of seven with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and our mouths were filled with the leaves of trees that we ate. Today, there is not one of us who is not a ruler over Egypt or its neighboring lands. And certainly, I have seen myself and Sa'd ibn Malik acquiring a cloak, where I took half and Sa'd took half. It has reached me that the distance between the two doors of Paradise is forty years, and a day will come upon it when it will be crowded. Indeed, prophethood has been abrogated, and it will become a kingdom. And I seek refuge with Allah that I may be great in my own eyes while insignificant in the eyes of others, and that you will be tested with rulership after me."
