[Machine] While I was passing by the Prophet ﷺ in the chamber, he said, "O mother of Fadl (i.e., my aunt), I have an announcement to make to you." I said, "Here I am at your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Indeed, you are pregnant with a boy." She said, "How is that possible when the Quraysh have agreed not to give birth to any girls?" He said, "That is what I am telling you. So when you give birth to him, bring him to me." So when she gave birth to him, she brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, and he named him Abdullah and brought him close to his mouth and blessed him with his saliva. Then he said, "Take him and you will find him intelligent." She said, "So I went to Abbas and informed him, so he became excited. Then he went to the Prophet ﷺ, and he was a handsome and tall man. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he stood up and kissed him between his eyes, then he made him sit on his right side and said, 'This is my uncle, so whoever wishes to boast about his uncle, then let him boast about his.'" Abbas said some words to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Why shouldn't I speak about you when you are my uncle and the rest of my fathers are my uncles as well?"

[Machine] I attended the funeral of Ibn Abbas in Taif, and a white bird came that had not been seen around it until it entered his coffin, and nothing was seen coming out of it. When he was buried, this verse was recited on the edge of the grave: "O soul that is at rest, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter among My [righteous] servants and enter My Paradise."

[Machine] I was with my father in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , and there was a man who was whispering to him. So, the Prophet appeared to be distancing himself from my father. When we left, my father said to me, "Did you not see your cousin avoiding me?" I replied, "O father, there was a man with him who was whispering to him." My father asked, "Did he have anyone else with him?" I said, "Yes." We then returned, and my father said to the Prophet, "O Messenger of Allah, I said to Abdullah such and such, and he said to me such and such. Was there anyone with you?" The Prophet replied, "Yes, O Abdullah, did you see him?" I said, "Yes." The Prophet said, "That was Gabriel, ﷺ , and he was the one who kept me occupied from you."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on the head of Abdullah bin Abbas and said, "O Allah, give him wisdom and teach him interpretation." Then he placed his hand on his chest and Ibn Abbas felt the coldness of his hand on his back. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Allah, expand his chest with knowledge and wisdom." After this, Ibn Abbas did not feel hesitant to ask anyone for anything, and he continued to be a source of knowledge for the Ummah until Allah took him away.

[Machine] I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Ali wearing white clothes while they were talking to Dhayat ibn Khalifa al-Kalbi, who was actually Jibril. I didn't recognize him and didn't greet them. Jibril said, "O Muhammad, who is this?" He replied, "This is my cousin, the son of Abbas." Jibril said, "How clear are his clothes! Indeed, his offspring will rise in power after him. If he had greeted us, we would have returned the greeting." When I returned, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "O Ibn Abbas, what prevented you from greeting?" I said, "By my father and mother, I saw you talking to Dhayat ibn Khalifa and I disliked interrupting your conversation." He said, "Did you see him?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Indeed, your sight will go away and he will be the one to return the greeting upon your death." Ikrimah said, "When Ibn Abbas passed away and was placed on his bed, a brightly shining bird entered into his shroud. They wanted to spread his shroud, but Ikrimah said, "What are you doing? This is the glad tidings from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." When he was placed in his grave, a word was heard by everyone on the edge of his grave, "O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter among My [righteous] servants and enter My Paradise."

[Machine] What do you say about Abu Bakr?" He said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr, he was truly devoted to the Quran, always inclined towards good, avoiding indecency, preventing evil, knowledgeable about his religion, fearful of Allah, avoiding destructive things, standing in worship at night, fasting during the day, staying away from worldly temptations, upholding justice, commanding good and forbidding evil, patient in adversity, grateful in all situations, remembering Allah in the morning and evening, subduing his desires for the sake of his soul, surpassing his companions in piety, sufficiency, asceticism, chastity, righteousness, vigilance, devotion, contentment. So Allah exalted him, making the cursed ones wary of him until the Day of Judgement."

He then wrote to him, asking him about the galaxy, the arc, and the spot that the sun has never touched except for one hour. He said, "When he came to Muawiyah, the book and the messenger, he said, "This is something that I never thought I would be asked about till this day. Who has this?" It was said, "Ibn Abbas." So Muawiyah rolled up the letter and sent it to Ibn Abbas. He then wrote to him, "Indeed, the arc is a protection for the people on Earth from drowning, and the galaxy is the gate of the sky from which it opens up, and as for the spot that the sun has never touched except for one hour of the day, it is the sea that was opened up for the children of Israel."

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, I said to a man, "Come, let us learn from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask them, for indeed, they are many." The man said, "By Allah, you, O Ibn Abbas, do you see that people are in need of you? And among the people, who do you see from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" So, I left that and approached the matter and followed the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If I wanted to come to a man in a conversation, I would find him saying, so I would lean my cloak against the door of his house, with the wind blowing on my face, until he would come out to me. And when he saw me, he would say, "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah, what is it for you?" I would say, "I have heard a narration that reached me that you narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I wanted to hear it from you." He would say, "Why don't you send for me, and I will come to you?" I would say, "I thought I was more deserving to come to you." And that man would see that the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had gone and the people were in need of me, so he would say, "You were more deserving than me."

[Machine] The man is not lying, but rather disagreeing. Ibn Abbas said, "So what do you say about what happened in yourself?" And the man said to him, "May Allah tell you, He says, 'So there will be no blood relations among them on that day, nor will they ask about one another.'" And he said in another verse, "And some of them will come to others questioning." And he said in another verse, "They do not conceal from Allah anything." And he said in another verse, "And Allah is our Lord, we have not associated anything with Him." They have concealed in this verse and in His saying, "He constructed the heavens and extended its scope and perfected it and created the night and formed the light and spread the earth." So He mentioned in this verse the creation of the heavens before the creation of the earth, then He said in this other verse, "Do you deny the One who created the earth in two days and make for Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds. And He placed on it firmly set mountains over its surface and blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information] of those who ask. Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, 'Come into being, willingly or by compulsion.' They said, 'We have come willingly.'" So He mentioned in this verse the creation of the earth before the creation of the heavens, "And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." "And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise." "And Allah is Hearing and Seeing." And it is as if it was then that Ibn Abbas said, "Tell me what is in yourself." The questioner said, "If you inform me about this, it is enough for me." And Ibn Abbas said, "His saying, 'So there will be no blood relations among them on that day, nor will they ask about one another.' This is in the first blowing of the trumpet, the statues will be blown off and those in the heavens and on the earth except whoever Allah wills." [Machine] Abu Salih al-Harrani narrated in the year 320 that Hayyan ibn Ubaydullah ibn Zuhayr al-Misri, Abu Zuhayr, had been narrating for sixty years. He said, "I asked Dahhak ibn Mazahim about the saying of Allah: {No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy}, {Indeed, We [i.e., God] used to hold that what you [i.e., humans] used to do} and {Indeed, We [i.e., God] created everything in proportion}. He [i.e., Dahhak] said, "Ibn Abbas said, 'Indeed, Allah created the Throne and then settled upon it, and then He created the Pen and commanded it to write by His command. He magnified the Pen from that which is between the heavens and the earth. So, the Pen said, 'O Lord, in what shall I write?' He said, 'Write what I have created, and it is the work, sustenance, and lifespan.' So, the Pen flowed with what it is ordained until the Day of Resurrection. Then, Allah made it firm in the Guarded Tablet beneath the Throne. As for His saying, {Indeed, We used to transcribe what you used to do}, indeed, Allah has assigned angels to transcribe everything from that book each year on the Night of Decree in Ramadan. They transcribe everything that will happen in the following year on earth, and this contradicts the guardianship established by Allah over His servants each Thursday night. They find what the guardianship has raised to be in accordance with what is written in their book. This has no increase or decrease. As for His saying, {Indeed, We created everything according to a measure}, indeed, Allah has created everything in its appropriate measure regarding its creation and provision. He created the camel in a way that nothing is suitable for it from other creatures, and likewise with everything from His creation. He created provisions for the land animals and birds that are suitable for them on land, and He created provisions for the sea creatures and birds that are suitable for them in the sea. That is the meaning of His saying, {Indeed, We created everything according to a measure}."

[Machine] When Harura left and they were in a house by themselves, I said to Ali, "O Commander of the Faithful, cool down from prayer; perhaps I will come to these people and speak to them." He said, "I fear for you from them." I said, "No, if Allah wills." So I put on the best that I could from this Yemeni garment and then I entered upon them while they were saying in the middle of the day. So I entered upon a group of people that I had never seen a group more diligent than them. Their hands were like camel humps and their faces were marked with the signs of prostration. I entered and they said, "Welcome, O Ibn Abbas, what brings you?" I said, "I came to tell you about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who received revelation and were the most knowledgeable of its interpretation." Some of them said, "Do not talk to him," while others said, "We will speak to him." I said, "Tell me, why do you seek revenge on the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who circumcised and was the first to believe, and on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who were with him?" They said, "We seek revenge on him for three reasons." I said, "What are they?" They said, "The first reason is that he judged in matters of religion, while Allah says, 'Indeed, judgement is only for Allah." I said, "What else?" They said, "He fought without insulting or seizing booty. If they were disbelievers, his wealth would be lawful to them, and if they were believers, their blood would be forbidden to him." I said, "What else?" They said, "He killed himself due to the Commander of the Faithful. If he is not the Commander of the Faithful, then he is the Commander of the Disbelievers." I said, "Let me tell you, if I recite to you from the Book of Allah what is clear and explain to you from the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ what you cannot deny, will you reconsider?" They said, "Yes." I said, "As for your saying that he judged in matters of religion, Allah says, 'O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram.' [5:95] until "Judgement is only for Allah," [7:87] He also said regarding the man and his wife, 'And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people.' [4:35] I ask you, by Allah, is the judgement of men in regards to preserving their blood and selves and reconciling between themselves more deserving, or the price of a hare worth a quarter of a dirham?" They said, "O Allah, in regards to preserving their blood and reconciling between themselves." I said, "Did you hear this?" They said, "Yes." I said, "As for your saying that he fought without insulting or seizing booty, do you accuse your mothers or do you consider permissible from them what you consider permissible from others? For indeed, you have disbelieved. And if you claim that she is not your mother, then you have disbelieved and have left the fold of Islam. Indeed, Allah says, 'The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves and his wives are their mothers.' So you are wavering between the two misguidances, so choose whichever one you wish." They said, "O Allah, yes." I said, "And as for your saying that he killed himself due to the Commander of the Faithful, on the day of Hudaybiyah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned the Quraysh to write a document between him and them. So he said, ‘Write this is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.’ They said, ‘By Allah, if we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have prevented you from entering the Ka'bah or fought against you. But write, Muhammad ibn Abdullah.’ He said, ‘By Allah, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah, and even if you deny me, write O Ali, Muhammad ibn Abdullah.’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was better than Ali." I said, "Did you hear this?" They said, "O Allah, yes." So twenty thousand of them left and four thousand of them remained, and they were killed.

[Machine] When Allah sent Moses, ﷺ , and revealed to him the Torah, he said, "Oh Allah, indeed You are a great Lord. If You wanted to be obeyed, I would have obeyed. And if You wanted to not be disobeyed, I would not have been disobeyed. And You love to be obeyed, and yet You are disobeyed in that matter. So how is this, oh Lord?" So Allah revealed to him, "I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked." So Moses, ﷺ , stopped. When Allah sent Ezra and revealed to him the Torah after he had raised it among the children of Israel, he said, "Whoever claims to be the son of Allah, say, 'Oh Allah, indeed You are a great Lord. If You wanted to be obeyed, I would have obeyed. And if You wanted to not be disobeyed, I would not have been disobeyed. And You love to be obeyed, and yet You are disobeyed in that matter. So how is this, oh Lord?" So Allah revealed to him, "I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked." So Ezra stopped. Then he asked again and said, "Can You make me as tall as the sun?" He said, "No." He asked, "Can You bring me a measurement of wind?" He said, "No." He asked, "Can You bring me a weight of light?" He said, "No." So he said, "So you are not able to do what I asked. I do not ask about what I do, but they are asked." Then Allah said, "I will not punish you except by erasing your name from the prophets, so you will not be mentioned among them." So He erased his name from the prophets, so he is not mentioned among them, even though he was a prophet. When Allah sent Jesus, ﷺ , and he saw his status from his Lord and was taught the scriptures, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel, and he cured the blind, the lepers, and brought the dead to life, and informed them of what they ate and what they stored in their houses, he said, "Oh Allah, indeed You are a great Lord. If You wanted to be obeyed, I would have obeyed. And if You wanted to not be disobeyed, I would not have been disobeyed. And You love to be obeyed, and yet You are disobeyed in that matter. So how is this, oh Lord?" So Allah revealed to him, "I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked." And, "You are My servant and My messenger and My word whom I cast unto Mary, and a spirit created by Me. I created you from clay and said to you, 'Be,' and you were. If you do not desist, I will chastise you as I chastised your companion before you. Indeed, I do not ask about what I do, but they are asked." Even if you were in a hole, you would have been sought after until you were extracted. By Allah, Muawiyah will plot against you. This is because Allah says, "And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law]." Quraysh will burden you with the customs of the Persians and Romans, and the Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians will seek favors from you. Some of them said (to ʿUmar), "Why do you allow this young man to enter with us, while we have sons of his own age? " ʿUmar said, "You know what person he is." One day ʿUmar called them and called me along with them, I had thought he called me on that day to show them something about me (i.e. my knowledge). ʿUmar asked them, "What do you say about (the Sura): "When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest (of Mecca) And you see mankind entering the Religion of Allah (i.e. Islam) in crowds. 'So celebrate the Praises Of your Lord and ask for His forgiveness, Truly, He is the One Who accepts repentance and forgives." (110.1-3) Some of them replied, "We are ordered to praise Allah and repent to Him if we are helped and granted victory." Some said, "We do not know." Others kept quiet. ʿUmar then said to me, "Do you say similarly?" I said, "No." ʿUmar said "What do you say then?" I said, "This Verse indicates the approaching of the death of Messenger of Allah ﷺ of which Allah informed him. When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest, i.e. the Conquest of Mecca, that will be the sign of your Prophet's) approaching death, so testify the uniqueness of your Lord (i.e. Allah) and praise Him and repent to Him as He is ready to forgive." On that, ʿUmar said, "I do not know about it anything other than what you know." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4294)
