0.03. Patience and Perseverance

Allah ﷻ says, "O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful. (Āl ʿImrān 3:200)"

And He says, "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient. (Baqarah 2:155)"

And He says, "Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account. (Zumar 39:10)"

And He says, "And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination. (Shūrá 42:43)"

And He says, "O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. (Baqarah 2:153)"

And He says, "And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs. (Muḥammad 47:31)"

The are many famous verses that command patience and describe its virtues.

Blessings of contentment, self-sufficiency, and patience; Patience is the ultimate blessing

(26) bukhari:1469ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd al-Laythī > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī

Some people from the Anṣār asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he gave them. They again asked him and he gave them again until all that was with him finished. And then he said, "If I had anything, I would not keep it away from you. Whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will grant him contentment, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will grant him self-sufficiency. And whoever remains patient, Allah will grant him patience. No one can be given a blessing better and greater than patience."

A believer is patient in trial and grateful in ease

(27) muslim:2999Haddāb b. Khālid al-Azdī And Shaybān b. Farrūkh > Sulaymān b. al-Mughīrah Wa-al-Lafẓ Lishaybān > Sulaymān > Thābit > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Laylá > Ṣuhayb

the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, "˹How˺ wondrous is the affair of a believer: for there is good in every affair of his, while that is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer: ˹i.e.,˺ if times of ease strike him, he is grateful which is good for him; and if times of distress strike him, he is patient, which is ˹also˺ good for him."

(28) bukhari:4462Sulaymān b. Ḥarb > Ḥammād > Thābit > Anas

When the ailment of the Prophet ﷺ became aggravated, he became unconscious. Then Fāṭimah said, "Oh, the distress of my father!" He ﷺ said, "Your father will have no more distress after today." When he passed away, she said, "O my father, Allah has called you back and you have responded to His call. O my father, the Garden of Firdaws (Paradise) is your abode. O father, we announce to Jibrīl (Gabriel) your death." When he was buried, she said: "O Anas, are you satisfied now that you covered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with earth?

Allah puts mercy in the hearts of who He wills; Only the merciful will be shown Mercy

(29) bukhari:5655Ḥajjāj b. Minhāl > Shuʿbah > ʿĀṣim > Abū ʿUthmān > Usāmah b. Zayd

a daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent a message to him while he, along with Saʿd and Ubay, were with the Prophet ﷺ saying: My daughter is dying; please come." The Prophet ﷺ sent her his greetings and said, "It is for Allah what He takes, and what He gives; everything before Him has an appointed time, so you should hope for the reward and remain patient." She again sent a message, beseeching him by Allah, ˹to come˺. So the Prophet ﷺ got up. and so did we.

The child was placed on the lap of the Prophet ﷺ while his breath was irregular. Tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ. Saʿd said to him, "What is this, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said. "This Is Mercy which Allah has embedded in the hearts of whomever He wills of His servants. Allah does not bestow His Mercy on anyone other than the ones who are merciful."

Story of the People of the Ditch and how steadfastness in belief triumphs over a tyrant king and his persecution

(30) muslim:3005Haddāb b. Khālid > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Laylá > Ṣuhayb

There lived a king before you and he had a (court) magician. As he (the magician) grew old, he said to the king: I have grown old, send some young boy to me so that I should teach him magic. He (the king) sent to him a young man so that he should train him (in magic). And on his way (to the magician) he (the young man) found a monk sitting there. He (the young man) listened to his (the monk's) talk and was impressed by it. It became his habit that on his way to the magician he met the monk and set there and he came to the magician (late). He (the magician) beat him because of delay. He made a complaint of that to the monk and he said to him: When you feel afraid of the magician, say: Members of my family had detained me. And when you feel afraid of your family you should say: The magician had detained me.

It so happened that there came a huge beast (of prey) and it blocked the way of the people, and he (the young boy) said: I will come to know today whether the magician is superior or the monk is superior. He picked up a stone and said: O Allah, if the affair of the monk is dearer to Thee than the affair of the magician, cause death to this animal so that the people should be able to move about freely. He threw that stone towards it and killed it and the people began to move about (on the path freely). He (the young man) then came to that monk and Informed him and the monk said: Sonny, today you are superior to me. Your affair has come to a stage where I find that you would be soon put to a trial, and in case you are put to a trial don't give my clue.

That young man began to treat the blind and those suffering from leprosy and he in fact began to cure people from (all kinds) of illness. When a companion of the king who had gone blind heard about him, he came to him with numerous gifts and said: If you cure me all these things collected together here would be yours. He said: I myself do not cure anyone. It is Allah Who cures and if you affirm faith in Allah, I shall also supplicate Allah to cure you. He affirmed his faith in Allah and Allah cured him.

He came to the king and sat by his side as he used to sit before. The king said to him: Who restored your eyesight? He said: My Lord. Thereupon he said: It means that your Lord is One besides me. He said: My Lord and your Lord is Allah, so he (the king) took hold of him and tormented him till he gave a clue of that boy. The young man was thus summoned and the king said to him: O boy, it has been conveyed to me that you have become so much proficient in your magic that you cure the blind and those suffering from leprosy and you do such and such things. Thereupon he said: I do not cure anyone; it is Allah Who cures, and he (the king) took hold of him and began to torment him. So he gave a clue of the monk. The monk was thus summoned and it was said to him: You should turn back from your religion. He, however, refused to do so. He (ordered) for a saw to be brought (and when it was done) he (the king) placed it in the middle of his head and tore it into parts till a part fell down. Then the courtier of the king was brought and it was said to him: Turn back from your religion. Arid he refused to do so, and the saw was placed in the midst of his head and it was torn till a part fell down.

Then that young boy was brought and it was said to him: Turn back from your religion. He refused to do so and he was handed over to a group of his courtiers. And he 'said to them: Take him to such and such mountain; make him climb up that mountain and when you reach its top (ask him to renounce his faith) but if he refuses to do so, then throw him (down the mountain). So they took him and made him climb up the mountain and he said: O Allah, save me from them (in any way) Thou likest and the mountain began to quake and they all fell down and that person came walking to the king. The king said to him: What has happened to your companions? He said: Allah has saved me from them.

He again handed him to some of his courtiers and said: Take him and carry him in a small boat and when you reach the middle of the ocean (ask him to renounce) his religion, but if he does not renounce his religion throw him (into the water). So they took him and he said: O Allah, save me from them and what they want to do. It was quite soon that the boat turned over and they were drowned and he came walking to the king, and the king said to him: What has happened to your companions? He said: Allah has saved me from them.

He said to the king: You cannot kill me until you do what I ask you to do. And he said: What is that? He said: You should gather people in a plain and hang me by the trunk (of a tree). Then take hold of an arrow from the quiver and say: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; then shoot an arrow and if you do that then you would be able to kill me. So he (the king) called the people in an open plain and tied him (the boy) to the trunk of a tree, then he took hold of an arrow from his quiver and then placed the arrow in the bow and then said: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; he then shot an arrow and it bit his temple. He (the boy) placed his hands upon the temple where the arrow had bit him and he died and the people said: We affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man. The courtiers came to the king and it was said to him: Do you see that Allah has actually done what you aimed at averting?

They (the people) have affirmed their faith in the Lord. He (the king) commanded ditches to be dug at important points in the path. When these ditches were dug, and the fire was lit in them it was said (to the people): He who would not turn back from his (boy's) religion would be thrown in the fire or it would be said to them to jump in that. (The people courted death but did not renounce religion) till a woman came with her child and she felt hesitant in jumping into the fire and the child said to her: O mother, endure (this ordeal) for it is the Truth.

True patience is at the first stroke of a calamity

(31) bukhari:1283Ādam > Shuʿbah > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik

The Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her to fear Allah and be patient. She said to him, "Go away, for you have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine." And she did not recognize him. Then she was informed that he was the Prophet ﷺ . so she went to the house of the Prophet ﷺ and there she did not find any guard. Then she said to him, "I did not recognize you." He said, "Verily, the patience is at the first stroke of a calamity."

Jannah is a reward for the one whose best friend passes away

(32) bukhari:6424Qutaybah > Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAmr > Saʿīd al-Maqburī > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah says, 'I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my believer slave, who, if I cause his dear friend (or relative) to die, remains patient (and hopes for Allah's Reward).

Patience during a plague and submission to Will of Allah reaps the reward of martyrdom

(33) bukhari:3474Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Dāwud b. Abū al-Furāt > ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar > ʿĀʾishah

I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the plague. He told me that: "It is a Punishment sent by Allah on whom he wills, and Allah made it a source of mercy for the believers, for if one in the time of an epidemic plague stays in his country patiently hoping for Allah's Reward and believing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him, he will get the reward of a martyr."

Jannah is the reward for the blind when they show patience

(34) bukhari:5653ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > al-Layth > Ibn al-Hād > ʿAmr a freed slave of al-Muṭṭalib > Anas b. Mālik

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Allah said, 'If I deprive my slave of his two beloved things (i.e., his eyes) and he remains patient, I will let him enter Paradise in compensation for them.'"

An example of a woman of Jannah

(35) bukhari:5652Musaddad > Yaḥyá > ʿImrān Abū Bakr > ʿAṭāʾ b. Abū Rabāḥ > Ibn ʿAbbās

Ibn ʿAbbas said to me, "Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise?" I said, "Yes." He said, "This black lady came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'I get attacks of epilepsy and my body becomes uncovered; please invoke Allah for me.' The Prophet ﷺ said (to her), 'If you wish, be patient and you will have (enter) Paradise; and if you wish, I will invoke Allah to cure you.' She said, 'I will remain patient,' and added, 'but I become uncovered, so please invoke Allah for me that I may not become uncovered.' So he invoked Allah for her." Narrated 'Ata: That he had seen Um Zafar, the tall black lady, at (holding) the curtain of the Kaʿba.

A Prophet's patience over his nation who severely harmed him

(36) bukhari:3477ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ from my father > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq

As if I saw the Prophet ﷺ talking about one of the prophets whose nation had beaten him and caused him to bleed, while he was cleaning the blood off his face and saying, "O Allah! Forgive my nation, for they have no knowledge."

Every kind of distress, even a thorn prick, expiates sins

(37) bukhari:5641ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAmr > Zuhayr b. Muḥammad > Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥalḥalah > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick from a thorn, except that Allah expiates some of his sins for that."

Even the slightest of pain expiates sins like leaves fall off of a tree

(38) bukhari:5648ʿAbdān > Abū Ḥamzah > al-Aʿmash > Ibrāhīm al-Taymī > al-Ḥārith b. Sūwayd > ʿAbdullāh

I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was suffering from a high fever. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, you have a very high fever." He said, "Yes, I have as much fever as two men of you." I said, "Is it because you will have a double reward?"

He said, "Yes, it is so. No Muslim is afflicted with the prick of a thorn or something greater except that Allah expiates his sins because of it just as a tree sheds its leaves."

The best duʿāʾ to wish for death in case of dire situations

(40) bukhari:6351Ibn Salām > Ismāʿīl Ibn ʿUlayyah > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb > Anas

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you should long for death because of a calamity that had befallen him. But if he must long for death, then he should say, 'O Allah! Let me live as long as life is better for me, and take my life if death is better for me.'"

Prophecy of the spread of Islam and safety as Muslims were being persecuted in Makkah

(41) bukhari:6943Musaddad > Yaḥyá > Ismāʿīl > Qays > Khabbāb b. al-Arat

We complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (about our state) while he was leaning against his sheet cloak in the shade of the Kaʿba. We said, "Will you ask Allah to help us? Will you invoke Allah for us?"

He said, "Among those who were before you a (believer) used to be seized and, a pit used to be dug for him and then he used to be placed in it. Then a saw used to be brought and put on his head which would be split into two halves. His flesh might be combed with iron combs and removed from his bones, yet, all that did not cause him to revert from his religion."

"By Allah! This religion (Islam) will be completed (and triumph) till a rider (traveler) goes from Sanʿa' (the capital of Yemen) to Hadramout fearing nobody except Allah and the wolf lest it should trouble his sheep, but you are hastey."

The Prophet ﷺ showed patience when a man of weak faith accused him of injustice

(42) muslim:1062aZuhayr b. Ḥarb And ʿUthmān b. Abū Shaybah Waʾisḥāq b. Ibrāhīm > Isḥāq > al-Ākharān > Jarīr > Manṣūr > Abū Wāʾil > ʿAbdullāh

On the day of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed preference (to some) people in the distribution of the spoils. He bestowed on Aqra' b. Habis one hundred camels, and bestowed an equal (number) upon 'Uyaina, and bestowed on people among the elites of Arabia, and preferred them (to others) on that day, in the distribution (of spoils). Upon this a person said: By Allah, neither justice has been done in this distribution (of spoils), nor has the pleasure of Allah been sought in it. I (the narrator ) said: By Allah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. I came to him and informed him about what he had said. The color of his (the Prophet's) face changed red like blood and he then said: "Who would do justice, if Allah and His Messenger do not do justice?" He further said: "May Allah have mercy upon Moses; he was tormented more than this, but he showed patience." I said: Never would I convey him (the Holy Prophet) after this (unpleasant) narration.

Allah puts his servants through in this world to cleanse them before their final accounting

(43) tirmidhi:2396Qutaybah > al-Layth > Yazīd b. Abū Ḥabīb > Saʿd b. Sinān > Anas

"When Allah wants good for his slave, He hastens his punishment in the world. And when He wants bad for His slave, He withholds his sins from him until he appears before Him on the Day of Judgement."

And with this (same) chain, (it was reported) from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "Indeed greater reward comes with greater trial. And indeed, when Allah loves a people He subjects them to trials, so whoever is content, then for him is pleasure, and whoever is discontent, then for him is wrath."

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Gharīb in this particular context.

Showing patience at the loss of a child

(44a) bukhari:5470Maṭar b. al-Faḍl > Yazīd b. Hārūn > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAwn > Anas b. Sīrīn > Anas b. Mālik

Abu Talha had a child who was sick. Once, while Abu Talha was out, the child died. When Abu Talha returned home, he asked, "How does my son fare?" Um Salaim (his wife) replied, "He is quieter than he has ever been." Then she brought supper for him and he took his supper and slept with her. When he had finished, she said (to him), "Bury the child (as he's dead)." Next morning Abu Talha came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about that. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Did you sleep with your wife last night?" Abu Talha said, "Yes". The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah! Bestow your blessing on them as regards that night of theirs."

Um Sulaim gave birth to a boy. Abu Talha told me to take care of the child till it was taken to the Prophet. Then Abu Talha took the child to the Prophet ﷺ and Um Sulaim sent some dates along with the child. The Prophet ﷺ took the child (on his lap) and asked if there was something with him. The people replied, "Yes, a few dates." The Prophet took a date, chewed it, took some of it out of his mouth, put it into the child's mouth and did Tahnik for him with that, and named him 'Abdullah.

Duʿāʾ of the Prophet ﷺ for the parents at the death of their child who then bore nine pious children

(44b) bukhari:1301Bishr b. al-Ḥakam > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Ṭalḥah > Anas b. Mālik

One of the sons of Abu Talha became sick and died and Abu Talha at that time was not at home. When his wife saw that he was dead, she prepared him (washed and shrouded him) and placed him somewhere in the house. When Abu Talha came, he asked, "How is the boy?" She said, "The child is quiet and I hope he is in peace." Abu Talha thought that she had spoken the truth. Abu Talha passed the night and in the morning took a bath and when he intended to go out, she told him that his son had died, Abu Talha offered the (morning) prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and informed the Prophet ﷺ of what happened to them. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah bless you concerning your night. (That is, may Allah bless you with good offspring)." Sufyan said, "One of the Ansar said, 'They (i.e. Abu Talha and his wife) had nine sons and all of them became reciters of the Qur'an (by heart).' "

(44c) muslim:2144dMuḥammad b. Ḥātim b. Maymūn > Bahz > Sulaymān b. al-Mughīrah > Thābit > Anas

Do not narrate to Abu Talha about his son until I narrate it to him. Abu Talha came (home) ; she presented to him the supper. He took it and drank water. She then embellished herself which she did not do before. He (Abu Talha) had a sexual intercourse with her and when she saw that he was satisfied after sexual intercourse with her, she said: Abu Talha, if some people borrow something from another family and then (the members of the family) ask for its return, would they resist its return? He said: No. She said: I inform you about the death of your son. He was annoyed, and said: You did not inform me until I had a sexual intercourse with you and you later on gave me information about my son. He went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him what had happened. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah bless both of you in the night spent by you!

He (the narrator) said: She became pregnant. Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) was in the course of a journey and she was along with him and when Messenger of Allah ﷺ came back to Medina from the journey he did not enter (his house) (during the night). When the people came near Medina, she felt the pangs of delivery. He (Abu Talha) remained with her and Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded on. Abu Talha said: O Lord, you know that I love to go along with Messenger of Allah when he goes out and enter along with him when he enters and I have been detained as Thou seest. Umm Sulaim said: Abu Talha, I do not feel (so much pain) as I was feeling formerly, so better proceed on. So we proceeded on and she felt the pangs of delivery as they reached (Medina) and a child was born and my mother said to me: Anas, none should suckle him until you go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tomorrow morning. And when it was morning I carried him (the child) and went along with him to Messenger of Allah (may peace beupon him). He said: I saw that he had in his hand the instrument for the cauterisation of the camels. When he saw me. he said: This is, perhaps, what Umm Sulaim has given birth to. I said: Yes. He laid down that instrument on the ground. I brought that child to him and placed it in his lap and Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Ajwa dates of Medina to be brought and softened them in his month. When these had become palatable he placed them in the mouth of that child. The child began to taste them. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: See what love the Ansar have for dates. He then wiped his face and named him 'Abdullah.

True strength is in self-control

(45) bukhari:6114ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Abū Hurayrah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger."

Seeking refuge from Satan purges anger

(46) bukhari:3282ʿAbdān > Abū Ḥamzah > al-Aʿmash > ʿAdī b. Thābit > Sulaymān b. Ṣurad

While I was sitting in the company of the Prophet, two men abused each other and the face of one of them became red with anger, and his jugular veins swelled (i.e. he became furious). On that the Prophet said, "I know a word, the saying of which will cause him to relax, if he does say it. If he says: 'I seek Refuge with Allah from Satan.' then all is anger will go away." Some body said to him, "The Prophet has said, 'Seek refuge with Allah from Satan."' The angry man said, "Am I mad?"

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone suppresses anger when he is in a position to give vent to it, Allah, the Exalted, will call him on the Day of Resurrection over the heads of all creatures, and ask him to choose any of the bright and large-eyed maidens he wishes.

Story of how the Caliph ʿUmar ؓ suppressed his anger when he was unjustly accused

(50) bukhari:7286Ismāʿīl > Ibn Wahb > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās

Uyaina bin Hisn bin Hudhaifa bin Badr came and stayed (at Medina) with his nephew Al-Hurr bin Qais bin Hisn who was one of those whom ʿUmar used to keep near him, as the Qurra' (learned men knowing Qur'an by heart) were the people of ʿUmar's meetings and his advisors whether they were old or young. 'Uyaina said to his nephew, "O my nephew! Have you an approach to this chief so as to get for me the permission to see him?" His nephew said, "I will get permission for you to see him." (Ibn ʿAbbas added: ) So he took permission for 'Uyaina,

And when the latter entered, he said, "O the son of Al-Khattab! By Allah, you neither give us sufficient provision nor judge among us with justice." On that ʿUmar became so furious that he intended to harm him. Al-Hurr, said, "O Chief of the Believers!" Allah said to His Apostle 'Hold to forgiveness, command what is good (right), and leave the foolish (i.e. do not punish them).' (7.199) and this person is among the foolish." By Allah, ʿUmar did not overlook that Verse when Al-Hurr recited it before him, and ʿUmar said to observe (the orders of) Allah's Book strictly."

A man from the Ansar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Will you appoint me as you have appointed so-and-so?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "After me, you will see others given preference over you; so be patient till you meet me at the Ḥawḍ (the Basin) ˹on the Day of Resurrection˺.

(the freed slave of 'Umar bin 'Ubaidullah) I was Umar's clerk. Once Abdullah bin Abi Aufa wrote a letter to 'Umar when he proceeded to Al-Haruriya. I read in it that Messenger of Allah ﷺ in one of his military expeditions against the enemy, waited till the sun declined and then he got up amongst the people saying, "O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety, but when you face the enemy, be patient, and remember that Paradise is under the shades of swords." Then he said, "O Allah, the Revealer of the Holy Book, and the Mover of the clouds and the Defeater of the clans, defeat them, and grant us victory over them."
