13. Book of Fasting (2/6)
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ traveled during Ramadan, and fasting became difficult for one of his companions. So his riding animal wandered with him under a tree. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about his situation, so he ordered him to break his fast. Then the Prophet ﷺ called for a vessel, placed it in his hand, and he drank while the people were watching."
"Some food was brought to the Messenger of Allah at Marr Az-Zahran, and he said to Abu Bakr and 'Umar: 'Come and eat.' They said: 'We are fasting.' He said: 'Saddle the camels for your companions, and help your companions."'(Daif) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2264)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My nation will continue to follow my Sunnah as long as they do not hasten the breaking of their fast until the stars appear." And the Prophet ﷺ would command a person to complete their fast if they were in doubt about the sunset, and when they say, "The sun has set," then they may break their fast.
The month most liked by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for fasting was Sha'ban. He then joined it with Ramadan. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2431)
The Prophet ﷺ said: The day of Arafah, the day of sacrifice, the days of tashriq are (the days of) our festival, O people of Islam. These are the days of eating and drinking. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2419)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has prohibited fasting on the Day of Arafah at Arafat."
It is as if I can see ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ , riding the white mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he stood at the mountain pass of the Ansar during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: ʿThese are not the days of fasting, rather they are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 708)
[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi praised what was narrated about Malik from Yazid bin Al-Had from Abu Murrah, the client of Umm Hani', that he entered upon Abdullah bin Amr to his father Amr bin Al-Aas. He brought them food and said, "Eat." Abdullah said, "I am fasting." Amr said, "Eat, for these are the days that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to order us to break our fast and forbid us from fasting them." Malik said, "And these are the days of Tashreeq."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever fasts the whole year as if they didn't fast at all or as if they didn't break their fast."
"It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, so and so never broke his fast, even for one day for the rest of his life.' He said: 'He has neither fasted nor broken his fast."" 'Ata said: "someone who heard him told me that Ibn 'Umar (said) that the Prophet said: 'Whoever fasts every day of his life, then he has not fasted." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2379)
The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not fast on Saturday except what has been made obligatory on you; and if one of you can get nothing but a grape skin or a piece of wood from a tree, he should chew it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2421)
[Machine] He informed him that Ibn Abbas and some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ sent me to Umm Salamah to ask her on which days did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast the most? She said, "On Saturdays and Sundays."
So I returned to them and informed them, and it seemed as if they denied it. So they all went to her and said, "We sent this to you about so and so and you mentioned that you said so and so." She said, "Yes, it is true that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast the most on the days of Saturday and Sunday, and he used to say, 'They are the days of celebration for the polytheists and I want to differ from them.'"
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ while we were with him. She said: Messenger of Allah, my husband, Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, and makes me break my fast when I keep a fast, and he does not offer the dawn prayer until the sun rises. He asked Safwan, who was present, about what she had said. He replied: Messenger of Allah, as for her statement "he beats me when I pray", she recites two surahs (during prayer) and I have prohibited her (to do so). He (the Prophet) said: If one surah is recited (during prayer), that is sufficient for the people. (Safwan continued:) As regards her saying "he makes me break my fast," she dotes on fasting; I am a young man, I cannot restrain myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: A woman should not fast except with the permission of her husband. (Safwan said:) As for her statement that I do not pray until the sun rises, we are a people belonging to a class, and that (our profession of supplying water) is already known about us. We do not awake until the sun rises. He said: When you awake, offer your prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2459)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, "Friday is a day of celebration, so do not make the day of your celebration a day of fasting unless you fast either before it or after it."
[Machine] I asked Abu Dharr, and I said, "Did you ask the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, about Laylat al-Qadr?" He said, "I used to ask people about it." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, inform me about Laylat al-Qadr. Is it in Ramadan or in another month?" He said, "Verily, it is in Ramadan." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is it with the Prophets? When the Prophets are taken, is it also taken until the Day of Resurrection?" He said, "Indeed, it is taken until the Day of Resurrection." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, in which Ramadan is it?" He said, "Seek it in the first ten days and the last ten days." He said, "Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, spoke and I was distracted by his words, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, in which of the twenty days is it?" He said, "Seek it in the last ten days, and do not ask me about anything after that." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then spoke and I was distracted by his words. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I swear by you, tell me, or if you do not tell me, in which of the ten days is it?" He became angry with me in a way that no one had seen him angry before or after, and he said, "If Allah willed, He would have made it known to you. Seek it in the last seven days."
[Machine] Have you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Try to seek it in the last ten nights, on a night which you see?" He asked, and some said it's on the first night, and some others said it's on the third night, and another said it's on the fifth night. And I remained silent, so he said, "Why are you not speaking?" So I said, "If you permit me, O Amir al-Mu'minin, I will speak." He said, "Did I not send you except to speak?" I said, "Shall I tell you my opinion?" He said, "We ask you about that." I said, "I believe that there are seven. Allah mentioned seven skies, and there are seven earths, and He created man from seven (elements), and plants emerge from the earth in seven (days)." He said, "This is what I was informed of, and I know it. Have you seen something that I don't know? What do you say about the plants that emerge from the earth in seven?" I said, "Allah says, 'We have split open the earth.' (Surah Abasa, 26), until His saying, 'And fruit and pasture (for livestock).' (Surah Abasa, 31). And pasture is what the animals eat and not humans." Umar said, "Are you amazed that this young man has spoken in a manner that his affairs have not yet gathered? By Allah, I do not see any other saying except what you have said." He said, "And he (Umar) said, 'I had ordered you not to speak until they spoke, and now I order you to speak with them.'" Ibn Idris narrated this from Abdul-Malik, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, with a similar narration.
[Machine] I mentioned the Night of Decree to Abu Bakrah and he said, "I only seek it in the last ten nights, either in the ninth, seventh, fifth, or in the last night." He used to pray in the last ten nights the entire year, and when the last ten nights started, he would strive even more.
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic sentence is: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "The voluntary fasting person is the master of his own self; if he wants, he fasts, and if he wants, he breaks his fast."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who observes voluntary fasting has the choice to either fast or break it."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2025)
The Prophet ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. One year he did not observe i'tikaf. When the next year came, he observed i'tikaf for twenty nights (i.e. days). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2463)
[Machine] The prophet ﷺ said, "The person who is in I'tikaf (seclusion for worship) does not have to fast except if they wish to do so voluntarily."
[Machine] To stay overnight and the next day he sought the advice of the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Stay overnight and observe fasting for a day." This is the second Hadith.
[Machine] The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "There is no seclusion (i'tikaf) except with fasting." The two sheikhs, Sufyan ibn Husayn and Abdullah ibn Yazid, did not object.
[Machine] "He has made it permissible for the elderly sheikh who is unable to fast, and ordered that he feeds the one whom he knows cannot bear it."
[Machine] "To fast and feed a poor person every day and not skip any day."
"I heard An-Nu'man bin Bashir on the minbar in Hims saying: "We prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until one-third of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until one-half of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought that we would miss Al-Falah- that is what they used to call suhur." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1606)

[Machine] Indeed, Al-Aqra' bin Habis asked the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj to be performed every year or once?" He replied, "Once, and whoever wishes may perform it voluntarily." This is an authentic narration, and Abu Sinan is the narrator. They did not exclude Sufyan bin Husayn, who is among the reliable narrators whose narrations are accepted.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Enjoy this house because it has been destroyed twice and will be raised for the third time."
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'The guests of Allah are three: The ghazi, the Hajj (pilgrim) and the Mu'tamir''' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2625)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, forgive the pilgrim and those for whom the pilgrim seeks forgiveness."
[Machine] From the prophet ﷺ regarding his saying, "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way" [Al Imran 97]. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the way?" He said, "Provision and means of transportation."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the saying of Allah, "Whoever is able to find a way [to perform Hajj]/[to reach it]" [Surah Al-Imran 97]. So, it was said, "What is the way?" He said, "Provisions and a means of transportation."
“A woman is not to travel the distance of a day and a night unless she is accompanied by someone who is a Mahram.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1170)
“A woman is not to travel the distance of a day and a night unless she is accompanied by someone who is a Mahram.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1170)
[Machine] Abdullah, wait until I bid you farewell as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to bid us farewell. I entrust to Allah your religion, your trustworthiness, and the conclusion of your deeds.
“The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions performed Hajj walking from Al-Madinah to Makkah. He said: ‘Tie your lower garments around your waists,’ and he alternated between walking and jogging.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3119)
[Machine] People complained to the Prophet ﷺ about the long distance they had to walk, so he called them and said: "You should embrace walking." We then started walking and found it easier than we thought.
"The companion who is the best to Allah is the one who is best to his companion. And the neighbor that is the best to Allah is the one that is best to his neighbor." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1944)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of companions are four, and the best armies are four thousand, and they have not been defeated by a force of twelve thousand due to their small numbers." This is an authentic narration according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (i.e. Al-Bukhari and Muslim), and they have not excluded it. There are differences of opinion regarding this narration from Az-Zuhri from four different aspects, which I have explained in detail in the book of Al-Talkhees.
[Machine] Ibrahim ibn Abdullah narrated that Abu Asim al-Nabil narrated from Abdul Hamid ibn Ja'far, from Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Ata', from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a group of people and said, "What portion of the Quran do you have with you?" So, they recited it to him. He continued doing this until he came across a man who was the youngest among them. He asked him, "What do you have with you, O so and so?" The man replied, "I have this and that, and Surah Al-Baqarah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go, for you are their leader."
[Machine] Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, "If there are three people, let one of them be appointed as their leader, whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has commanded."
[Machine] We carried the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on weak camels from the charity camels for Hajj. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do not see it fit for you to ride these." He said, "Every camel has a devil on its back, so remember the name of Allah when you mount it, as He has commanded you, then leave it to its own devices, for Allah alone carries (the weight)."
[Machine] From his father that he was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Ride these animals safely and treat them safely, and do not make them a means of sitting."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the back of every camel, there is a devil. When you ride them, remember the name of Allah, and do not neglect your needs."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Indeed, on every thorny peak of a camel, there is a devil. So, make them familiar with riding, for surely Allah, the Almighty, carries them."
"The Messenger of Allah forbade (eating) animals that had been taken as targets, the milk of Al-Jallalah (animals that eat dung), and drinking directly from water skins." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4448)
The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan. (Using translation from Muslim 2114)
Anas reported the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ as saying “Keep to travelling by night, for the earth is traversed (more easily) by night. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2571)
[Machine] The translation of the given text into English is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lie down on his right side when he got married at night, and when he got married before dawn, he would lean on his arms and place his head on his hand."
