A funeral procession passed and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It has been affirmed to him." Then another funeral procession passed and the people spoke badly of the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It has been affirmed to him". ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab asked (Messenger of Allah ﷺ ), "What has been affirmed?" He replied, "You praised this, so Paradise has been affirmed to him; and you spoke badly of this, so Hell has been affirmed to him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مَرُّوا بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ مَا وَجَبَتْ قَالَ هَذَا أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا فَوَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَهَذَا أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا فَوَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

A funeral procession passed in front of the Prophet ﷺ and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It has been affirmed (Paradise)." Then another funeral procession passed by and the people talked badly of the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It has been affirmed (Hell)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You said it has been affirmed for both?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The testimony of the people (is accepted), (for) the believer are Allah's witnesses on the earth."

مُرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مُرَّ بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا أَوْ قَالَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْتَ لِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ وَلِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ قَالَ شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

There passed a bier (being carried by people) and it was lauded in good terms. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. And there passed a bier and it was condemned in bad words. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. 'Umar said: May my father and mother be ransom for you! There passed a bier and it was praised in good terms, and you said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. And there passed a bier and it was condemned in bad words, and you said: It has become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) said: He whom you praised in good terms, Paradise has become certain for him, and he whom you condemned in bad words, Hell has become certain for him. You are Allah's witnesses in the earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth.

نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرٌّ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فِدًى لَكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي مُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرٌّ فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَمَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

People with a bier passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They (the companions) spoke highly of him. He said: Paradise is certain for him. Then some people with another (bier) passed by him. They spoke very badly of him. He said: Hell is certain for him. He then said: Some of you are witness to others.

مَرُّوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مَرُّوا بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ شُهَدَاءُ

"A funeral (procession) passed by the Messenger of Allah and they were praising him with good statements. So the Messenger of Allah said: 'Granted.' Then he said: 'You are Allah's witnesses on the earth.'"

مُرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عُمَرَ وَكَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

"A funeral passed by and the deceased was praised." The Prophet said: "It is granted." Another funeral passed by and the deceased was criticized. The Prophet said: "It is granted." 'Umar said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. One funeral passed by and the deceased was praised, and you said, 'It is granted?"' He said: "Whoever is praised will be granted Paradise, and whoever is criticized will be granted Hell, You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي مُرَّ بِجَنَازَةِ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَمَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

"A funeral passed by the Prophet and they praised (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted.' Then another funeral passed by and they criticized (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you said in both cases, 'It is granted?' The Prophet said: 'The angels are the witnesses of Allah in heaven, and you are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."'

مَرُّوا بِجَنَازَةٍ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مَرُّوا بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَوْلُكَ الأُولَى وَالأُخْرَى وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

“A funeral (procession) passed by the Prophet ﷺ and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him. He said: ‘(Paradise is) guaranteed for him.’ Then another funeral passed by and they spoke badly of him, and he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: ‘(Hell is) guaranteed for him.’ It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you said that (Paradise was) guaranteed for this one and that (Hell was) guaranteed for the other one.’ He said: ‘It is the testimony of the people, and the believers are the witnesses of Allah on earth.’”

“A funeral passed by the Prophet ﷺ and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him and mentioned his good characteristics. “A funeral passed by the Prophet ﷺ and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him and mentioned his good characteristics. He said: ‘(Paradise is) guaranteed for him.’ Then another funeral passed by and they spoke badly of him and mentioned his bad characteristics, and he the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘(Hell is) guaranteed for him. [AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by a funeral, and they spoke very highly of the deceased, praising their good qualities. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is obligatory, for you are witnesses of Allah on earth." Then he passed by another funeral, and they spoke ill of the deceased.

“A funeral (procession) passed by the Prophet ﷺ and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him. مُرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَى الْقَوْمُ خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالُوا قُلْتَ لِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ وَلِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ ؟ قَالَ شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ

[AI] I passed by a funeral procession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "Praise him." They said, "He used to love Allah and His Messenger, and they used to praise him well." He said, "It is obligatory." Then, he passed by another funeral, and he said, "Praise him." They said, "He was a bad person in the religion of Allah." He said, "You are witnesses of Allah on earth."

مُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهَا فَقَالُوا كَانَ مَا عَلِمْنَا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهَا فَقَالُوا بِئْسَ الْمَرْءُ كَانَ فِي دِينِ اللهِ فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ أَنْتُمْ شُهُودُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a funeral, and I praised it to be good. He said, "It is incumbent." Then he passed by another funeral, and I praised it to be bad. He said, "It is incumbent."

مُرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed by a funeral, so they praised it. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "It is now obligatory." Then he passed by another funeral, and they spoke ill of it. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "It is now obligatory." Then he said, "You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّتْ عَلَيْهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a funeral and they praised it favorably, so he said, "It is binding, it is binding." And he passed by another funeral and they praised it negatively, so he said, "It is binding, it is binding." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, your first statement 'it is binding' and your second statement 'it is binding'? "The Prophet said, "As for the first, when they praised it favorably, I said that Paradise is binding for him. As for the second, when they praised it negatively, I said that Hellfire is binding for him. And you are witnesses of Allah on His earth."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّتْ عَلَيْهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَمَرَّتْ عَلَيْهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَوْلُكَ الْأَوَّلُ وَجَبَتْ وَقَوْلُكَ الْآخَرُ وَجَبَتْ؟ قَالَ أَمَّا الْأَوَّلُ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقُلْتُ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقُلْتُ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي أَرْضِهِ

[AI] "They passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a funeral procession and spoke ill of it, so he said ﷺ, 'It is deserved.' They passed by another funeral procession and spoke well of it, so he said ﷺ, 'It is deserved.' Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is deserved?' He said, 'If they pass by this one and speak ill of it, then the Fire is deserved. And if they pass by this one and speak well of it, then Paradise is deserved. And you are the witnesses of Allah on earth.'"

مَرُّوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» وَمَرُّوا بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا وَجَبَتْ؟ قَالَ «مَرُّوا بِتِلْكَ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَوَجَبَتِ النَّارُ وَمَرُّوا بِهَذِهِ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَوَجَبَتِ الْجَنَّةُ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ»

[AI] Pass by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a funeral and praise it better than the merits of goodness. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are witnesses of Allah on the earth."

He said: ‘(Paradise is) guaranteed for him.’ Then another funeral passed by and they spoke badly of him, and he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: ‘(Hell is) guaranteed for him.’ It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you said that (Paradise was) guaranteed for this one and that (Hell was) guaranteed for the other one.’ He said: ‘It is the testimony of the people, and the believers are the witnesses of Allah on earth.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1491)

مُرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ ثُمَّ مُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُلْتَ لِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ وَقُلْتَ لِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

[AI] I heard Anas ibn Malik say that a man died and they passed by his funeral in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and they spoke ill of him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is obligatory." Then they passed by another funeral and spoke well of him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is obligatory." Omar asked him about that and he said, "You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."

سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ مَاتَ رَجُلٌ فَمَرُّوا بِجَنَازَتِهِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» وَمَرُّوا بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» فَسَأَلَهُ عُمَرُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ «أَنْتُمْ شُهُودُ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ»

فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرٌّ فَقَالَ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ عُمَر فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي مُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرٌ فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرٌّ فَقُلْتُ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَمَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ لأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مرت عليه جنازة فاثنوا عليها خيرا من مناقب الخير فقال وجبت ثُمَّ مرت عليه باخرى فأثنوا عليها شرا في مناقب الشر فقال وجبت ثُمَّ قال إنكم شهود الله في الأرض

[AI] We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral procession passed by. The people said, "If only you know, and even if you know, if another funeral procession passes by, would you pray for both of them?" The people praised one funeral procession and criticized the other. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are the witnesses of Allah on earth, and the angels are the witnesses of Allah in the heavens."

كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ إِنْ كُنْتَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِأُخْرَى فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ إِنْ كُنْتَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَى وَاحِدَةٍ خَيْرًا وَعَلَى الْأُخْرَى شَرًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي السَّمَاءِ»

[AI] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a funeral and the people praised him with good praises. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Wajabat (it is obligatory)." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is obligatory?" He replied, "The angels are witnesses of Allah in the heavens and you are witnesses of Allah on the earth, so when you bear witness, it becomes obligatory (to speak the truth)."

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جِنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَى الْقَوْمُ عَلَيْهِ ثَنَاءً حَسَنًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَمَا وَجَبَتْ؟ قَالَ «الْمَلَائِكَةُ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَإِذَا شَهِدْتُمْ وَجَبَتْ»

"A funeral passed by and the deceased was praised." The Prophet said: "It is granted." Another funeral passed by and the deceased was criticized. The Prophet said: "It is granted." 'Umar said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. One funeral passed by and the deceased was praised, and you said, 'It is granted?"' He said: "Whoever is praised will be granted Paradise, and whoever is criticized will be granted Hell, You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1932)

نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» وَمُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي مُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ وَمُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقُلْتَ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ «مَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَمَنْ أَثْنَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا وَجَبَتْ لَهُ النَّارُ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ»

"A funeral passed by the Prophet and they praised (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted.' Then another funeral passed by and they criticized (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you said in both cases, 'It is granted?' The Prophet said: 'The angels are the witnesses of Allah in heaven, and you are the witnesses of Allah on Earth."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1933)

مَرُّوا بِجِنَازَةٍ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» ثُمَّ مَرُّوا بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَجَبَتْ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَوْلُكَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَجَبَتْ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «الْمَلَائِكَةُ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ»

[AI] I heard Anas ibn Malik say: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a funeral procession, and they spoke well of it, so he said, "It is deserved." Then he passed by another funeral procession, and they spoke ill of it, so he said, "It is deserved." Umar ibn Al-Khattab asked, "What is deserved, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "For the first one, you spoke well of him, so Paradise is deserved for him. And for the second one, you spoke ill of him, so Hellfire is deserved for him. And you are the witnesses of Allah on earth."

[AI] Passed by a funeral on the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, "Praise him." So they replied, "He was, as we knew, one who loved Allah and His Messenger and praised him well." He said, "Indeed, it is obligatory." He passed by another funeral and said, "Praise him." So they replied, "What a bad person he was in the religion of Allah!" He said, "You are witnesses for Allah on the earth."

مُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا كَانَ فِيمَا عَلِمْنَا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ قَالَ ثُمَّ مُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا بِئْسَ الْمَرْءُ كَانَ فِي دِينِ اللهِ فَقَالَ وَجَبَتْ أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ

“A funeral (procession) passed by the Prophet ﷺ and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him. [AI] Anas passed by the Prophet ﷺ during a funeral and praised it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is due." He passed by another funeral and spoke ill of it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is also due." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, you said 'due' for that one and for this one." The Prophet ﷺ said, "The testimony of the faithful people is the testimony of Allah on earth."

عَنْ أَنَسٍ مُرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ قَالَ وَمُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَجَبَتْ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُلْتَ لِذَلِكَ وَجَبَتْ وَقُلْتَ لِهَذِهِ وَجَبَتْ فَقَالَ شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ

("أَنتم شُهَدَاءُ الله في الأَرضِ، بَعْضُكُم على بَعْضٍ". قاله لما مات رجلٌ فأَثنوا عليه خَيرًا. فقال: وجبَتْ، ثمَّ مات آخرُ فأَثنوْا عليه شرًّا فقال: وجَبَتْ").

"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جنَازَةٌ فَأثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فِي مَناقِبِ الْخَيْرِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ : وَجَبَتْ، ثُمَّ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جِنَازَةٌ أُخْرَى فأثْنَوْا عَلَيها شَرًا فِي مَنَاقِبِ الشَّرِّ، فَقَالَ: وَجَبَتْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَنْتُم شُهُودُ اللهِ في الأَرْضِ".
