Aishah’s marriage to the Prophet ﷺ and joining his household

bukhari:3894Farwah b. Abī al-Maghrāʾ > ʿAlī b. Mushir > Hishām > his father > ʿĀʾishah ؓ

The Prophet ﷺ married me when I was a girl of six years. We came to Madinah and stayed among Banu al-Harith ibn Khazraj. I fell ill, and my hair came out, then it grew back until it reached my earlobes.

My mother, Umm Ruman, came to me while I was on a swing with some friends of mine. She called out to me, so I came to her, not knowing what she wanted with me. She took me by the hand until she made me stand at the door of the house, and I was breathing heavily until part of my breath settled. Then she took some water and wiped my face and head with it. Then she brought me into the house, and there were women of the Ansar in the house. They said, "Upon goodness and blessing, and upon the best fortune." She handed me over to them, and they prepared me. Nothing startled me except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the forenoon; then she handed me over to him. At that time, I was a girl of nine years.

Umm Ruman came to me while I was on a swing with my companions, and she called out to me, so I came to her, not knowing what she wanted with me. She took me by my hand and stood me at the door, and I said, “Hah, hah,” until my breath went away. Then she brought me into a house, and there were women of the Ansar. The Prophet ﷺ engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3894)
