'A'isha, if your people had not been recently polytheists (and new converts to Islam), I would have demolished the Ka'ba, and would have brought it to the level of the ground and would have constructed two doors, one facing the east and the other one to the west, and would have added to it six cubits of area from Hijr, for the Quraish had reduced it when they rebuilt it.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِشِرْكٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْكَعْبَةَ فَأَلْزَقْتُهَا بِالأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا وَزِدْتُ فِيهَا سِتَّةَ أَذْرُعٍ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ فَإِنَّ قُرَيْشًا اقْتَصَرَتْهَا حَيْثُ بَنَتِ الْكَعْبَةَ

"O Aishah, were if not for the fact that your people have recently left Jahiliyyah, I would have commanded that the House be knocked down, and I would have incorporated into it what was left out of it. I would have made its (door) in level with the ground and I would have given it two doors, an eastern door and a western door. For they built it too small, and by doing this, it would have been built on the foundation of Ibrahim, peace be upon him." He (one of the narrators said: "This is what motivated Ibn Az-Zubair to knock it down." Yazid said: "I saw Ibn Az-Zubair when he knocked it down and rebuilt it, and included part of the Hijr in it. And I saw the foundation of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, stones like the humps of camels joined to one another."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لأَمَرْتُ بِالْبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلْزَقْتُهُ بِالأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ بِنَائِهِ فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ قَالَ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي حَمَلَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى هَدْمِهِ قَالَ يَزِيدُ وَقَدْ شَهِدْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حِينَ هَدَمَهُ وَبَنَاهُ وَأَدْخَلَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ حِجَارَةً كَأَسْنِمَةِ الإِبِلِ مُتَلاَحِكَةً

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Aisha, "O Aisha, if it wasn't for the fact that your people have recently abandoned the practices of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), I would have ordered for the house to be demolished, then I would have entered it and put back in it what was taken out, and I would have stuck it to the ground, and I would have made two doors for it; one facing east and the other facing west. Indeed, they were not able to rebuild it. And I would have reached the foundations that were laid by Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ ."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَأَمَرْتُ بِالْبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلْزَقْتُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ بِنَائِهِ فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "O Aisha, if it were not for the fact that your people had recently come out of the period of ignorance, I would have demolished the Kaaba and rebuilt it in the way it was originally built by Ibrahim. I would have placed the stone which they took out of it back into its place and made it rest on the foundation of Ibrahim. I would have also added two doors to it; one on the east side and one on the west side." This is what Ibn Zubayr called for, to demolish the Kaaba and rebuild it.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا «يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْبَيْتَ حَتَّى أُدْخِلَ فِيهِ مَا أَخْرَجُوا مِنْهُ فِي الْحِجْرِ فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ نَفَقَتِهِ وَأَلْصَقْتُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ وَوَضَعْتُهُ عَلَى أَسَاسِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا» قَالَ فَكَانَ هَذَا الَّذِي دَعَا ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ إِلَى هَدْمِهِ وَبِنَائِهِ

[AI] "Aisha, my aunt, told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, 'O Aisha, if your people had not recently abandoned polytheism, I would have demolished the Kaaba, then rebuilt it with six additional yards of stone. Quraysh initially limited it in size when they rebuilt the Kaaba, and they made two doors for it, one on the eastern side and one on the western side, and secured it to the ground.'"

أَنْ يَهْدِمَ الْكَعْبَةَ وَيَبْنِيهَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ خَالَتِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا «يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِشِرْكٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْكَعْبَةَ ثُمَّ زِدْتُ فِيهَا سِتَّةَ أَذْرُعٍ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ فَإِنَّ قُرَيْشًا اقْتَصَرَتْ بِهَا حِينَ بَنَتِ الْبَيْتَ وَجَعَلَتَ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا وَأَلْزَقَتْهَا بِالْأَرْضِ»

"لَوْلا أن قَومَك حَدِيثُ عَهد بشِرْك أوْ بِجَاهِلِية لَهَدَمْتُ الكعْبَةَ فألزَقْتُهَا في الأرضِ، وَجَعَلتُ لَهَا بَابَينِ، بَابا شَرْقِيًّا، وبَابَا غَرْبيًّا وَزِدْتُ مِنْهَا مِن الحِجْر سِتَةَ أذرُعٍ فَإِنَّ قُرَيشا اقْتَصَرَتْهَا حِين بَنَتِ الكعْبَةَ".

"لَوْلا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهليةٍ لَهَدَمْتُ البَيتَ حَتَّى أُدْخِلَ فِيهِ مَا أخْرَجُوا منْهُ منَ الحِجْرِ، فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنِ النَّفَقَةِ وَجَعَلت لَهَا بَابَينِ بَابا شَرْقِيًّا، وَبَابا غَرْبِيًّا، وَألصَقتُهُ بِالأَرْضِ، وَلَوَضَعْتُهُ على أسَاسِ إِبْرَهِيمَ".

"يَا عَائِشَةُ: لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّة، لأَمَرْتُ بِالبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ، فَأَدْخَلتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلزَمْتهُ بِالأرْضِ، وَجَعَلتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ: بَابًا شَرْقِيّا، وبَابًا غَرْبِيًا فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ".
