"O Aishah, were if not for the fact that your people have recently left Jahiliyyah, I would have commanded that the House be knocked down, and I would have incorporated into it what was left out of it. I would have made its (door) in level with the ground and I would have given it two doors, an eastern door and a western door. For they built it too small, and by doing this, it would have been built on the foundation of Ibrahim, peace be upon him." He (one of the narrators said: "This is what motivated Ibn Az-Zubair to knock it down." Yazid said: "I saw Ibn Az-Zubair when he knocked it down and rebuilt it, and included part of the Hijr in it. And I saw the foundation of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, stones like the humps of camels joined to one another."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لأَمَرْتُ بِالْبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلْزَقْتُهُ بِالأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ بِنَائِهِ فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ قَالَ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي حَمَلَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى هَدْمِهِ قَالَ يَزِيدُ وَقَدْ شَهِدْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حِينَ هَدَمَهُ وَبَنَاهُ وَأَدْخَلَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ حِجَارَةً كَأَسْنِمَةِ الإِبِلِ مُتَلاَحِكَةً

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, 'If it were not for the fact that your people have recently abandoned idolatry or ignorance, I would demolish the Kaaba and rebuild it on the ground, placing two doors for it, one on the eastern side and one on the western side, and I would add six cubits of stones to it. Indeed, the Quraysh had made it smaller when they built the Kaaba.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِشِرْكٍ أَوْ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْكَعْبَةَ فَأَلْزَقْتُهَا بِالْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا وَزِدْتُ فِيهَا مِنَ الْحَجَرِ سِتَّةَ أَذْرُعٍ فَإِنَّ قُرِيشًا اقْتَصَرَتْهَا حِينَ بَنَتِ الْكَعْبَةَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Aisha, "O Aisha, if it wasn't for the fact that your people have recently abandoned the practices of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), I would have ordered for the house to be demolished, then I would have entered it and put back in it what was taken out, and I would have stuck it to the ground, and I would have made two doors for it; one facing east and the other facing west. Indeed, they were not able to rebuild it. And I would have reached the foundations that were laid by Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ ."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَأَمَرْتُ بِالْبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلْزَقْتُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ بِنَائِهِ فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

[AI] To Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Aisha, if it were not for the fact that your people have recent memories of ignorance, I would have demolished the Kaaba and rebuilt it on the foundation that was laid by Ibrahim (Abraham). For they were unable to afford the expenses of its rebuilding, and I would have added two doors to it, one facing east and one facing west, and I would have attached it to the ground, unlike its current construction." Ibn Zubayr called for the demolition and construction of the Kaaba, and Yazid bin Ruman witnessed its demolition. He extracted the foundation of the Kaaba like disconnected blocks and I asked Yazid bin Ruman, while I was walking with him, to show me what they had taken out from the Kaaba's structure. He said, "I will show it to you now." When he finished the demolition, he said, "This is the spot." Jarir (bin Abdullah Al-Bajali) said, "I estimated it to be about six cubits away."

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْبَيْتَ حَتَّى أُدْخِلَ فِيهِ مَا أَخْرَجُوا مِنْهُ فِي الْحِجْرِ فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ نَفَقَتِهِ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا وَأَلْصَقْتُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ وَلَوَضَعْتُهُ عَلَى أَسَاسِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ» قَالَ فَكَانَ الَّذِي دَعَا ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى هَدْمِهِ وَبِنَائِهِ قَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ رُومَانَ فَشَهِدْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حِينَ هَدْمَهُ فَاسْتَخْرَجَ أَسَاسَ الْبَيْتِ كَأَسْنِمَةِ الْبُخْتِ مُتَدَاخِلَةٍ فَقُلْتُ لِيَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ أَطُوفُ مَعَهُ أَرِنِي مَا أَخْرَجُوا مِنَ الْحِجْرِ مِنْهُ قَالَ أُرِيكَهُ الْآنَ فَلَمَّا انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ قَالَ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعُ قَالَ جَرِيرٌ فَحَزَرْتُهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ سِتَّةِ أَذْرُعٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "O Aisha, if it were not for the fact that your people had recently come out of the period of ignorance, I would have demolished the Kaaba and rebuilt it in the way it was originally built by Ibrahim. I would have placed the stone which they took out of it back into its place and made it rest on the foundation of Ibrahim. I would have also added two doors to it; one on the east side and one on the west side." This is what Ibn Zubayr called for, to demolish the Kaaba and rebuild it.

"يَا عَائِشَةُ: لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّة، لأَمَرْتُ بِالبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ، فَأَدْخَلتُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ وَأَلزَمْتهُ بِالأرْضِ، وَجَعَلتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ: بَابًا شَرْقِيّا، وبَابًا غَرْبِيًا فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ أَسَاسَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ".
