20. ʿUmar ؓ (1/2)

ahmad-zuhd:592ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAffān > Jarīr b. Ḥāzim > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] Abu Sufyan said, "I have never seen anyone like them, they are allowed to enter his (Muhammad's) presence and we are left outside his door with no attention given to us." So Suhail bin Amr, a wise man, said, "O people, I swear by Allah, I can see from your faces that if you become angry, you will take it out on yourselves. They have been called and responded quickly, while we have been slow. So how will it be for you when you are called on the Day of Judgment and you are left behind? I swear by Allah, when they have surpassed you in virtue that you do not see, it is a greater loss for you than missing out on this door that we are competing for." Then he shook his clothes and left. Al-Hasan said, "By Allah, Suhail spoke the truth. Allah does not make a servant of His hasten to Him like a servant who is slow in turning to Him."

ahmad-zuhd:593ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. Ghaylān > Sufyān > Ibn Judʿān > ʿUmar a man > Allāhum Ājʿalnī from al-Aqallīn > Yā ʿAbdullāh And Mā al-Aqallūn > Allāh

[Machine] I heard Allah saying, "And only a few believed with him." (Hud 40) "And few of My servants are grateful." (Saba 13) And he mentioned other verses and Umar said, "Everyone is more knowledgeable than Umar."

ahmad-zuhd:594ʿAbdullāh > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar > Sulaym b. Jaʿfar > al-Ḥasan > al-Aḥnaf b. Qays > Kunnā

[Machine] We used to witness Omar's food, one day it would be a tough meat, another day it would be a roasted meat, and another day it would be oil.

ahmad-zuhd:595ʿAbdullāh > Yaʿqūb b. Ibrāhīm al-Dawraqī > Ibn Mahdī > Abū ʿAwānah > Abū Balj > ʿAmr b. Maymūn > ʿUmar a man

[Machine] Umar heard a man saying, "O Allah, indeed You change the condition of a person's heart, so change between me and my sins that I may act upon a portion of them." Umar said, "May Allah have mercy on you," and prayed for him for good.

ahmad-zuhd:596ʿAbdullāh > Yaʿqūb > Rawḥ > Abū Khaldah > Abū al-ʿĀliyah > Akthar

[Machine] I hear Umar ibn Al-Khattab saying, "O Allah, protect us and forgive us."

ahmad-zuhd:597ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād > Ḥātim / Ibn Ismāʿīl > 95 Hishām b. Saʿd > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah > al-Miswar b. Makhramah

[Machine] Umar brought some money and placed it in the mosque. He went out to it, examining it and looking at it. His eyes became teary, and AbdurRahman ibn Awf said to him, "O commander of the believers, what makes you cry? By Allah, this is indeed one of the places of gratitude." Umar said, "By Allah, this is not given to a people except that enmity and hatred is cast among them."

ahmad-zuhd:598ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād > Ḥātim > Hishām b. Saʿd > Zayd b. Aslam from his father > Raʾayt ʿAbdullāh b. Arqam Jāʾ > ʿUmar

[Machine] "O Commander of the believers, we have a collection of beautiful and precious items made of gold and silver. If you have spare time one day, please give us your command regarding them." He replied, "Inform me when you see me free." One day, they approached him and said, "Today, we see you free." He said, "Very well, bring me a tray." He then ordered the collection to be poured onto it until it filled the tray. He stood over it and said, "O Allah, I remembered this wealth and recited the verse 'Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire' (Quran 3:14), and 'So lest you despair over what has slipped away from you and do not exult in what He has given you' (Quran 57:23). Verily, we can only be happy with what Allah has adorned for us, so spend it in a righteous cause and seek refuge in You from its evil." He ordered his son, Abdul Rahman ibn Buhiyyah, to bring the tray. The son requested, "O father, give me a ring." He replied, "Go to your mother and she will quench your thirst." The son said, "By Allah, he did not give me anything."

ahmad-zuhd:599ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. ʿAbbād > Ibn ʿUyaynah > Ibn Judʿān > Kān

[Machine] Umar had chosen a pearl, and when Uthman came, he chose a pearl even harder than it.

ahmad-zuhd:600ʿAbdullāh > Muṣʿab b. ʿAbdullāh al-Zubayrī > Mālik / Ibn Anas > Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Ṭalḥah > Anas b. Mālik

[Machine] I once heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say, as I was walking with him until we reached a wall, and I heard him say while he was inside the wall, "Umar, the Commander of the Believers, be cautious, by Allah, O son of al-Khattab, that you fear Allah and obey Him, or else He will torment you."

ahmad-zuhd:601ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar > Yūnus > al-Zuhrī > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

[Machine] And he addresses the people from the pulpit, "Indeed, those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah' and then remain steadfast, the angels will descend upon them." [Quran 41:30] So he said, "Remain steadfast and by Allah, in the obedience of Allah, and then they did not stray like the fox strays."

ahmad-zuhd:602ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAyyāsh > Muḥammad b. Muṭarrif > Zayd b. Aslam from his father

[Machine] So We sent him to the well and he sent it to the well and he diverted his fodder to a house of the Muslims.

ahmad-zuhd:603ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Ḥammād b. Usāmah > Hishām from his father > ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

[Machine] Omar sent for me, so I went to him and he was in his mosque either during Fajr or Dhuhr (prayers). He said, "I did not think that this money is lawful for me before I possess it, except with its rightful dues. I have not prohibited myself from it since I obtained it. I return my trust to you, although I have spent a month of Allah's possessions on you, and I am not giving it to you as a favor but as assistance from my own wealth. Strip yourself of it and then go to one of your people from their businessmen, and when he purchases something, participate with him and spend on your family."

ahmad-zuhd:604ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad > Salām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] I heard Al-Hasan saying, "Omar, may Allah have mercy on him, was given some money and that was brought to Hafsah bint Umar, the mother of the believers. She came and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, the rights of your relatives should be considered before portioning out this money, as Allah has emphasized the rights of relatives regarding it.' He replied, 'O my daughter, my relatives have already received their shares from my own wealth. As for this money, it is for the benefit of the Muslims as a whole. I have appeased your father and advised your relatives, my people.' Then she stood up, and I swear by Allah, her dress trailed behind her." 605- Abdullah narrated to us and said, "I recited this hadeeth to my father."

ahmad-zuhd:606Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah > Mālik b. Anas > Zayd b. Aslam > Abīh Qīl Liʿumar b. al-Khaṭṭāb > Fī

[Machine] "Is the jizyah (poll tax) a blessing, or is the voluntary charity a blessing?" I said, "No, it is a blessing of the jizyah." Umar said, "By Allah, you intended to eat it." I said, "Indeed, there is the label of jizyah on it." Umar commanded that it be brought, so it was brought, and it was slaughtered. He had nine sahifahs (containers) with him, and no fruit or dessert could be found except that he put some of it into those sahifahs. Then he sent them to the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And the one sent to Hafsah would be the last to reach her, so if there was any deficiency in it, it would be in Hafsah's share. All of them said that. He put some of the meat of those sheep into those sahifahs, and he sent them to the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .
