[Machine] Abu Sufyan said, "I have never seen anyone like them, they are allowed to enter his (Muhammad's) presence and we are left outside his door with no attention given to us." So Suhail bin Amr, a wise man, said, "O people, I swear by Allah, I can see from your faces that if you become angry, you will take it out on yourselves. They have been called and responded quickly, while we have been slow. So how will it be for you when you are called on the Day of Judgment and you are left behind? I swear by Allah, when they have surpassed you in virtue that you do not see, it is a greater loss for you than missing out on this door that we are competing for." Then he shook his clothes and left. Al-Hasan said, "By Allah, Suhail spoke the truth. Allah does not make a servant of His hasten to Him like a servant who is slow in turning to Him."

[Machine] "And by Allah, he was well-peaked (referring to the physical appearance of the Prophet Muhammad) and he loved them (referring to his Companions). He had advised them, so Abu Sufyan said, 'I have never seen a day like this before, where slaves are given precedence and we, who are sitting here, are not even looked at.' So Suhayl ibn Amr said, 'Oh, what a wise man he is! O people, I swear by Allah, I can see what is on your faces, so if you are angry, be angry with yourselves. The people have been called and they have responded quickly, while you have lagged behind. By Allah, what they have gone ahead with in terms of virtue in what they see, is harder for you to attain than a gap from your doorway to the goal you are competing for.' Then he said, 'Indeed, these people have surpassed you in what they see, and there is no way for you to catch up with them by Allah. Look at this jihad, and cling to it, perhaps Allah Almighty will bless you with it. Then he shook his garment, got up, and joined the army going to Sham (Greater Syria).' Al-Hasan said, 'By Allah, he spoke the truth. Allah does not make a servant faster in pursuing something than another servant who is slower in reaching it.'" The summarize of this statement was omitted by Al-Dhahabi.

[Machine] I heard al-Hasan saying, "The nobles of Quraysh gathered at the door of 'Umar. Among them were al-Harith bin Hisham, Abu Sufyan bin Harb, Suhail bin Amr, and those slaves and servants who were companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . His permission was granted, and he gave permission to Bilal, Suhaib, and others like them, while leaving the others. Abu Sufyan said, 'I have never seen a day like this when permission is given to these slaves and we are left sitting at his door, not given permission.' Suhail bin Amr, who was a wise man, said, 'O people, by Allah, I see what is in your faces. If you are angry, then be angry with yourselves. The people were called and you were called, so hurry up and you were slow. Or, by Allah, when you rushed ahead of others in virtue, you will suffer a greater loss than if you had missed something from your own door that you competed for.'" Al-Hasan said, "Allah does not make a servant more eager to approach Him than a servant who is slower in doing so."
