[Machine] Someone informed me that they saw Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) throwing stones at the Jamrah while wearing a patched loincloth with a piece of leather.  

أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ رَأَى عُمَرَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ يَرْمِي الْجَمْرَةَ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ مَرْقُوعٌ بِرُقْعَةٍ مِنْ أَدِيمٍ  

[Machine] Umar said, "Adhere to the remembrance of Allah, for it is a cure, and beware of excessive interaction with people, for it is a disease."  

قَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ شِفَاءٌ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَذِكْرَ النَّاسِ فَإِنَّهُ دَاءٌ»  

[Machine] He (may God have mercy on him) said, "Pray for them and do not criticize them." He repeated it to Umar three or four times, so Umar said to him, "Do not criticize. I fear for you that Allah may take you into His grip."  

لَهُ عُمَرُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ «صَلِّ بِهِمْ وَلَا تَقُصَّ عَلَيْهِمْ» فَتَرَدَّدَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعًا فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ لَا تَقُصَّ؛ فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَرْفَعَ نَفْسَكَ فَيَضَعَكَ اللَّهُ قَبْضَةً  

[Machine] "O girl, do you have any dates? Bring me some dates in a dish." She said, "I ate them all shyly." Then he said, "What did you say, O Muawiyah, when you came to the mosque?" He said, "I said, 'Indeed, the commander of the faithful is saying.'" He said, "Woe to what you said or woe to what you thought! If I sleep during the day, I will lose the flock, and if I sleep at night, I will lose myself. So how can I sleep with these two, O Muawiyah?"  

يَا جَارِيَةُ هَلْ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَأَتَتْنِي بِتَمْرٍ فِي طَبَقٍ قَالَ كُلْ فَأَكَلْتُ عَلَى حَيَاءٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَاذَا قُلْتَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ حِينَ أَتَيْتَ الْمَسْجِدَ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَائِلٌ قَالَ بِئْسَ مَا قُلْتَ أَوْ بِئْسَ مَا ظَنَنْتَ لَئِنْ نِمْتُ النَّهَارَ لَأُضَيِّعَنَّ الرَّعِيَّةَ وَلَئِنْ نِمْتُ اللَّيْلَ لَأُضَيِّعَنَّ نَفْسِي فَكَيْفَ بِالنَّوْمِ مَعَ هَذَيْنِ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ  

[Machine] Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote to Abu Musa: "You have not attained any better deed of the Hereafter than asceticism in this worldly life. Beware of the taste and lowliness of character."  

كَتَبَ عُمَرُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى أَبِي مُوسَى «إِنَّكَ لَمْ تَنَلْ عَمَلَ الْآخِرَةِ بِشَيْءٍ أَفْضَلَ مِنَ الزُّهْدِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَإِيَّاكَ وَمَذَاقَ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَدَنَاءَتَهَا»  

[Machine] Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, used to mention his brother at night and say, "How long this night feels!" Then, in the morning, he would go to his brother and when he met him, he would advise him or embrace Islam.  

أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ كَانَ يَذْكُرُ الْأَخَ مِنْ إِخْوَانِهِ بِاللَّيْلِ فَيَقُولُ «مَا أَطْوَلَهَا مِنْ لَيْلَةٍ» فَإِذَا [102] صَلَّى الْغَدَاةَ غَدَا إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا لَقِيَهُ؛ الْتَزَمَهُ أَوِ اعْتَنَقَهُ  

[Machine] Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "I do not eat anything that is unnourished, for I have seen the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , not eating anything unnourished."  

قَالَ عُمَرُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ «لَا يُنْخَلُ لِي دَقِيقٌ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ غَيْرَ مَنْخُولٍ»  

[Machine] Umar rode a horse during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his thigh was exposed from beneath his cloak. A man from the people of Najran saw a mark on his thigh and said, "This is what we find in our scriptures that will drive us out of our lands."  

رَكَضَ عُمَرُ فَرَسًا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَانْكَشَفَتْ فَخِذُهُ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْعَبَاءَةِ؛ فَأَبْصَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ شَامَةً فِي فَخِذِهِ فَقَالَ «هَذَا الَّذِي نَجِدُهُ فِي كِتَابِنَا يُخْرِجُنَا مِنْ دِيَارِنَا»  

[Machine] "to eat whenever he desires"  

أَنْ يَأْكُلَ كُلَّمَا اشْتَهَاهُ»  

[Machine] His slave broke free or converted, so he vowed to punish him until he would have enough of it. Then he made sour milk and brought it close to him. He said, "Take some of it." So he took from it and tasted it, then he said, "How delicious is this provision from Allah."  

غُلَامُهُ يَرْفَا أَوْ أَسْلَمُ لَأَجْعَلَنَّهُ حَتَّى يَعِيبَهُ فَجَعَلَ لَبَنًا حَامِضًا ثُمَّ قَرَّبَهُ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ فَقَطَّبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَا أَطْيَبَ هَذَا مِنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ ﷻ»  

[Machine] To be one of those who are mentioned in this verse, "Did you amass good things in your worldly life?" (Qur'an 46:20).  

أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنْ أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَاتِكُمْ فِي حَيَاتِكُمُ الدُّنْيَا} [الأحقاف 20] ؟  

[Machine] "So we sent the assassins to Omar, and I saw Omar wearing a patched garment. So I counted the patches and found that there were twelve patches."  

فَبَعَثْنَا الْقَتْلَى إِلَى عُمَرَ فَرَأَيْتُ عَلَى عُمَرَ ؓ إِزَارًا مَرْقُوعًا فَعَدَدْتُهَا فَإِذَا فِيهَا اثْنَا عَشَرَ رُقْعَةً  

[Machine] And he said, "I was only detained because of washing this garment. It was being washed and I did not have any other garment."  

وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا حَبَسَنِي غَسْلُ ثَوْبِي هَذَا كَانَ يُغْسَلُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِي ثَوْبٌ غَيْرُهُ»  

[Machine] "Yes, there is no luck in Islam for those who neglect prayer and they bleed profusely."  

«نَعَمْ وَلَا حَظَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ لِمَنْ تَرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَلَّى وَالْجُرْحُ يَثْغُبُ دَمًا»  

[Machine] "To cut off his limbs and then leave him."  

أَنْ يُقْطَعَ أَقْطَعُهُ فَتَرَكَهُ»  

[Machine] Omar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah have mercy on him, gave a speech to the people while he was the caliph, wearing a garment consisting of twelve patches.  

«خَطَبَ النَّاسَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ وَهُوَ خَلِيفَةٌ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ فِيهِ ثِنْتَا عَشْرَةَ رُقْعَةً»  

[Machine] "I wished that I could be saved, without reward or punishment."  

«وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي أَنْجُو لَا أَجْرَ وَلَا وِزْرَ»  

[Machine] Hafsah bint Umar said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, if you were to wear a garment that is softer than yours and eat food that is tastier than yours, then Allah has expanded your sustenance and increased your blessings." He said, "I will testify against you on behalf of yourself. Don't you remember what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suffered from hardship of living? He kept reminding you of it until he made you cry. He said to her, 'If I tell you that, by Allah, if I could, I would share with them the same severe living conditions, in the hope that I would attain their comfortable living."  

حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ «يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَوْ لَبِسْتَ ثَوْبًا هُوَ أَلْيَنُ مِنْ ثَوْبِكَ وَأَكَلْتَ طَعَامًا هُوَ أَطْيَبُ مِنْ طَعَامِكَ فَقَدْ وَسَّعَ اللَّهُ ﷻ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ وَأَكْثَرَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ» قَالَ إِنِّي سَأَخْصِمُكِ إِلَى نَفْسِكِ أَمَا تَذْكُرِينَ مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَلْقَى مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْعَيْشِ فَمَا زَالَ يُذَكِّرُهَا حَتَّى أَبْكَاهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا «إِنْ قُلْتُ لَكِ ذَاكَ إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَئِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُ لَأُشَارِكَنَّهُمَا بِمِثْلِ عَيْشِهِمَا الشَّدِيدِ لِعَلِّي أُدْرِكُ مَعَهُمَا عَيْشَهُمَا الرَّخَيَّ»  

[Machine] "Leave me, woe is me, and woe to my mother, if I am not forgiven, woe is me, and woe to my mother, if I am not forgiven."  

«دَعْنِي وَيْلِي وَوَيْلُ أُمِّي إِنْ لَمْ يُغْفَرْ لِي وَوَيْلِي وَوَيْلُ أُمِّي إِنْ لَمْ يُغْفَرْ لِي»  

[Machine] When Umar arrived in Sham, a farmer prepared food for him and his companions. Then Umar called them and said to the people, "Whoever among you wants to serve him, let him do so." He then asked him to send him two loaves of bread and one color of food. So he did, and the food came to him while he was kneading a camel with a bundle of firewood and tar. He wiped his hand with dust and then shook it off and ate.  

لَمَّا قَدِمَ عُمَرُ الشَّامَ صَنَعَ لَهُ دِهْقَانُ طَعَامًا وَلِأَصْحَابِهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ يَدْعُوهُمْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِلنَّاسِ مَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيُجِبْهُ وَقَالَ لَهُ ابْعَثْ إِلَيَّ بِرَغِيفَيْنِ وَلَوْنٍ وَاحِدٍ مِنْ طَعَامِكَ قَالَ فَفَعَلَ فَأَتَاهُ الطَّعَامُ وَهُوَ يُمْرِنُ بَعِيرًا لَهُ بِبَعْرٍ وَقَطِرَانٍ فَدَلَكَ يَدَهُ بِالتُّرَابِ ثُمَّ نَفَضَهَا وَأَكَلَ  

[Machine] "Woe to the pagans of the earth from the pagans of the sky on the day they meet him, except for those who have nourished justice and judged with truth, not swayed by whims, kinship, desire or fear. And He made the Book of Allah as a reflection before his eyes."  

«وَيْلٌ لِدَيَّانِ الْأَرْضِ مِنْ دَيَّانِ السَّمَاءِ يَوْمَ يَلْقَوْنَهُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَمَّ الْعَدْلَ وَقَضَى بِالْحَقِّ وَلَمْ يَقْضِ بِهَوَاءٍ وَلَا لِقَرَابَةٍ وَلَا لِرَغْبَةٍ وَلَا لِرَهْبَةٍ وَجَعَلَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ مِرْآتَهُ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ»  

[Machine] "Indeed, religion is not about engaging in (mere) recitation of prayers late at night, but rather, religion is about being cautious and conscientious."  

«إِنَّ الدِّينَ لَيْسَ بِالطَّنْطَنَةِ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ وَلَكِنَّ الدِّينَ الْوَرَعُ»  

[Machine] "I looked into this matter and found that if I desire the worldly life, I harm the Hereafter, and if I desire the Hereafter, I harm the worldly life. So, if the matter is like this, harm the ephemeral."  

«نَظَرْتُ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ فَجَعَلْتُ إِذَا أَرَدْتُ الدُّنْيَا أَضْرَرْتُ بِالْآخِرَةِ وَإِذَا أَرَدْتُ الْآخِرَةَ أَضْرَرْتُ بِالدُّنْيَا فَإِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْرُ هَكَذَا فَأَضِرُّوا بِالْفَانِيَةِ»  

[Machine] "He eats like this while Muslims die in jest, I will not ride it until the people come to life."  

«يَأْكُلُ هَكَذَا وَالْمُسْلِمُونُ يَمُوتُونَ هَزْلًا لَا أَرْكَبُهَا حَتَّى يَحْيَى النَّاسُ»
