6. Chapter of Jīm (Male) (5/21)
[Machine] I witnessed Safwan and Jundab and their companions while he was advising them, so they said to him, "Have you heard anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "I heard him saying, 'Whoever listens to others, Allah will listen to him on the Day of Resurrection.' And I think he said, 'And whoever disobeys, Allah will oppose him on the Day of Resurrection.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Whoever prays the Fajr prayer is under the protection of Allah, so Allah does not ask you for anything from His protection. But whoever seeks something from His protection, He will hold him accountable and cast him into the Hellfire."
[Machine] He ﷺ said that he heard the Prophet ﷺ before his death saying, "I had brothers and friends among you, and I disassociate myself with Allah from having any close friend among you. And if I were to take a close friend from my nation, I would have chosen Abu Bakr as a close friend. Indeed, my Lord has taken me as a close friend, just as He took Ibrahim as a close friend. Know that those before you used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous ones as places of worship, so do not take the graves as places of worship. Verily, I forbid you from doing so."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There will be trials after me, like pieces of dark night, in which a man will wake up in the morning as a believer and by evening he will be a disbeliever, or he will be a disbeliever in the morning and a believer by evening." A man from the Muslims then asked, "What should we do at that time, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Go to your homes and hold onto your remembrance (of Allah)." The man then asked, "What if someone enters our homes?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let him hold onto your hand and be the one killed, rather than being the one who kills. For a person may be in the group of Islam, but he eats his brother's wealth, sheds his blood, disobeys his Lord, and disbelieves in his Creator, and for him is the Hellfire."

[Machine] That a magician used to play with Al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and he would take the sword and slaughter himself and do such things, and it would not harm him. So Jundub stood up and took the sword and struck his own neck. Then he recited, "So do you bring the magic while you see [it]?"
أَنَّ سَاحِرًا كَانَ يَلْعَبُ عِنْدَ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ فَكَانَ يَأْخُذُ السَّيْفَ وَيَذْبَحُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَعْمَلُ كَذَا وَلَا يَضُرُّهُ «فَقَامَ جُنْدُبٌ إِلَى السَّيْفِ فَأَخَذَهُ فَضَرَبَ عُنُقَهُ» ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {أَفَتَأْتُونَ السِّحْرَ وَأَنْتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ}

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Ghālib ibn Abdullah al-Kalbi, the dog of Awf ibn Layth, on an expedition in which I was with them. He ordered him to launch a raid against the Banī al-Mulawwih with the people of al-Kadīd. He said, "So we went out until we reached al-Qudayd and encountered al-Hārith ibn Barṣā' al-Laythī. We captured him and he said, 'Indeed, I have come to embrace Islam. I only went out seeking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' We said, 'If you are a Muslim, staying with us for a night will not harm you. But if not, we will take security from you.' So we took his security and bound him with ropes. Then we left him with Rawijilān who were with us, including Aswad. We said to him, 'If he rebels against you, strike his head.' Then we came to al-Kadīd at sunset. We were in a valley, and my companions sent me to a hill overlooking the present location. I climbed up it until I was on its back, and I looked toward the people. I could see them prostrating before morning. Suddenly, a man came out of his hiding place and said to his wife, 'By Allah, I see a darkness that I did not see at the beginning of the day. Check your belongings. The dogs might have damaged some.' She said, 'By Allah, I have not lost anything.' He said, 'Give me my bow.' She gave him a bow and two arrows. He shot an arrow and said, 'By Allah, not one of them missed my side.' He said, 'So I snatched it from him and held him down, and then he shot the other, which I snatched from him and held down. He said to his wife, 'If it were loose, he would have moved. He surely felt the touch of my arrows.' Then he entered until the smell of the people's camels and sheep was gone, and they found that they had been captured and robbed. So we attacked them, killed them, and seized their sheep. Then we set out and returned. The people pursued us until we came by the son of al-Barṣā' and we took him with us along with our companion whom we left behind. We were pursued until we could see them, and there was nothing between us and them but the valley. They were facing us, and from the other side, as we were running, Allah brought rain from where He willed, such rain that no one would be able to collect. I saw them standing, looking at us as we were running, and no one from among them could reach us. When we passed by them, I will never forget a saying of a Muslim poet who was running the same path behind us.

[Machine] From Jundub ibn Abdullah Al-Azdi, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "I and he (referring to the Prophet ﷺ) set out towards Basra until we reached a place called Bayt al-Miskeen, which is similar to Thawiyah from Kufa. He asked me, 'Have you been teaching anyone the Qur'an?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'When we reach Basra, bring them to me.' So I came to him with Salih ibn Musarrih, Abi Bilal, Najdah, and Nafi' ibn Al-Azraq, who were among the elite of the people of Basra in my opinion at that time. He started narrating to me about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Jundub said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The example of a scholar who teaches people good but forgets himself is like a lamp that gives light to people and burns itself.'"
[Machine] Narrated Jundub ibn Abdullah al-Azdi: The companion of the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, said: "I set out with him towards Basra until we reached a place called Bayt al-Miskin, which is to Basra what Sawiya is to Kufa. He asked me, 'Did you used to teach anyone the Quran?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'When we reach Basra, bring them to me.' So, I brought him Salah ibn Musarrih, Abu Bilal, Najdah, and Nafi' ibn al-Azraq, who were among the distinguished people of Basra in my sight that day. Then, he started to speak to me about the Messenger of Allah, Peace be upon Him. Jundub narrated: The Messenger of Allah, Peace be upon Him, said, 'The likeness of the scholar who imparts knowledge to the people but forgets himself is like a lamp that illuminates the people but burns itself.'"

[Machine] Do not be deceived by these people, for they recite the Quran today and tomorrow they fight with swords. Then he said, "Bring me a group of Quran reciters, who are also elderly." So, I brought him Nafi' ibn Al-Azraq, and I brought him Mirdas, the father of Bilal, and another group consisting of six or eight people. When we entered upon Jundub, he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The example of the one who teaches people goodness but forgets himself is like a lantern that provides light for people but burns itself. And whoever seeks knowledge for the sake of showing off, Allah will expose him on the Day of Judgment. And whoever does good deeds to gain people's attention, Allah will make people aware of his deeds.'"

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention (on the Day of Resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him). (Using translation from Bukhārī 6499)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever a servant conceals a trait, Allah will make him wear its cloak, whether it is good or bad."
While the Prophet ﷺ was walking, a stone hit his foot and stumbled and his toe was injured. He then (quoting a poetic verse) said, "You are not more than a toe which has been bathed in blood in Allah's Cause." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6146)
[Machine] While the Prophet ﷺ was walking, his finger was pricked by a stone, so he said, "You are nothing but a bleeding finger, and in the cause of Allah, you will meet nothing but goodness."
[Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave, and his finger was cut. He said, "Are you not just a finger made of clay? In the cause of Allah, I encountered much worse."
[Machine] A stone struck the finger of the Prophet ﷺ and it bled. He said, "You are nothing but a bleeding finger and in the cause of Allah, I am not bothered by what I encounter."
[Machine] The Prophet's foot was hit by a stone, so it bled. He then said, "Are you nothing but a bleeding finger, while in the path of Allah, I face whatever comes?"
A finger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wounded in one of the encounters He said: Thou art just a little finger which has bled, and what thou hast experienced is in the cause of Allah. (Using translation from Muslim 1796a)
The Prophet ﷺ became sick and did not get up (for Tahajjud prayer) for a night or two. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1124)
سَمِعْتُ جُنْدُبًا يَقُولُ «اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَقُمْ لَيْلَةً أَوْ لَيْلَتَيْنِ» فَأَتَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَا رَأَى شَيْطَانُكَ إِلَّا قَدْ تَرَكَكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى}
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Some of the daughters of my uncle said, 'I do not see your companion except that he has weakened you.' He said, 'So the verse was revealed: {By the morning brightness and by the night when it covers with darkness, your Lord has not taken leave of you, nor has He detested [you]}'" The wording is according to the Hadith of 'Amr ibn Marzouq.
Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ became sick and could not offer his night prayer (Tahajjud) for two or three nights. Then a lady (the wife of Abu Lahab) came and said, "O Muhammad! I think that your Satan has forsaken you, for I have not seen him with you for two or three nights!" On that Allah revealed: 'By the fore-noon, and by the night when it darkens, your Lord (O Muhammad) has neither forsaken you, nor hated you.' (93.1-3) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4950)
اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَقُمْ لَيْلَتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ شَيْطَانُكَ قَدْ تَرَكَكَ لَمْ نَرَهُ قَرُبَكَ مُنْذُ لَيْلَتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثٍ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى}
[Machine] "Jibril (Gabriel) slowed down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So the polytheists said, "Muhammad has been abandoned." So Allah ﷻ revealed to His Messenger ﷺ, {What has your Lord abandoned you? And what has He said? And the Hereafter is better for you than the first. And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.}"
«أَبْطَأَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ قَدْ وُدِّعَ مُحَمَّدٌ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ {مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى وَلَلآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَى وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَى}
[Machine] I heard Jundub saying, "I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ and then he delivered a sermon and said, 'Whoever has slaughtered a sacrifice before offering prayers, then let him slaughter again and replace it in its place. And whoever has not slaughtered, then let him slaughter in the name of Allah.'"
I was with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of 'Id al-Adha. While he had not returned after having offered (the Id prayer) and finished it, he saw the flesh of the sacrificial animals which had been slaughtered before he had completed the prayer. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: One who slaughtered his sacrificial animal before his prayer or our prayer ('Id), he should slaughter another one in its stead, and he who did not slaughter, he should slaughter by reciting the name of Allah. (Using translation from Muslim 1960a)
I was with Messenger of Allah ﷺ (on the occasion) of 'Id al-Adha. After he had completed the prayer with people, he found that the goats had been slaughtered, whereupon he said: He who slaughtered sacrificial animal before the prayer should slaughter a goat (again) in its stead and he who has not slaughtered he should slaughter it by reciting the name of Allah. (Using translation from Muslim 1960b)
[Machine] I witnessed the Eid sacrifice with the Prophet ﷺ , and he saw some people who had slaughtered their animals before the prayer. He said, "Whoever has already slaughtered their animal before the prayer should repeat the sacrifice, and whoever has not yet slaughtered should do so in the name of Allah."
[Machine] I witnessed the Eid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he learned that some people had slaughtered before the prayer. So, he delivered a sermon to the people and said, "Whoever has slaughtered before the prayer should repeat their sacrifice, and whoever has not, should slaughter in the name of Allah."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ prayed and then said, "Whoever has slaughtered their sacrifice before the prayer, let them slaughter another one in its place. And whoever has not slaughtered, let them slaughter in the name of Allah."
[Machine] The Prophet's finger hit a tree and it bled. He said, "Is this just a bleeding finger? In the way of Allah, I haven't met anything worse." So he was carried and placed on a simple bed made of palm fibers or strips. His elbow was placed on a pillow filled with palm fibers, and the strip left a mark on his side. 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab came and cried, so the Prophet asked, "What makes you cry?" 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, Kisra and Caesar live on golden beds and wear silk and brocade. He said, "Are you not pleased that they have the world and you have the Hereafter?"

[Machine] We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a group came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we overslept and missed the prayer, so we did not pray until the sun rose." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Perform ablution and pray." Then he said, "Indeed, this is not negligence. This is from Satan. When one of you goes to bed at night, let him say, 'In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.'"
[Machine] "Indeed, I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a bearer of glad tidings came to him with news of the victory that Allah had given to his army and the opening that Allah had granted them. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, while we were pursuing the enemy who had already been defeated by Allah the Most High, I came across a man with a sword. When he realized that his sword was useless and he was being pursued, he started saying, "I am a Muslim, I am a Muslim." So the man asked, 'Did you kill him?' He replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, I sought refuge.' The Prophet asked, 'Could you not have dissected his heart to know if he was telling the truth or lying?' The man said, 'Had I dissected his heart, I wouldn't have known whether his heart was just a piece of flesh or not.' The Prophet said, 'You believed him without knowing what was in his heart or what he spoke. You have done right.' The man then said, 'O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me.' The Prophet replied, 'I will not seek forgiveness for you.' The man died and they buried him, but he appeared on the surface of the earth. This happened three times, and when they saw this, they felt ashamed and afraid of what they had encountered. So they picked him up and threw him into one of those valleys among those valleys."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked the idea of meeting Khalid and he was compassionate towards them. So, he said, "Who will guide us on an alternative route?" I said, "I am your guide." So, he took them on a path that had thorns and rocks, and the ground became difficult for us until he reached Al-Hudaybiyah. It was a place of exile, so he dipped an arrow into it or its arrowhead, then he spat in it, and called upon Allah. Its springs gushed forth until I even said, or we said, "If we wanted, we could have drowned them with our own hands."
