39. Sūrat al-Zumar

٣٩۔ سُورَةُ الزُّمَر

39.9 Those who have transgressed against their souls should not despair of God's mercy, they should repent while they can.

٣٩۔٩ مقطع في سُورَةُ الزُّمَر

quran:39:53

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves ˹by sinning˺, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."  

Say ˹that God declares˺: ‘O My servants who have been prodigal against their own souls, do not despair (read taqnitū, taqnatū, or taqnutū), do not give up hope, of God’s mercy. Truly God forgives all sins, for those who repent from idolatry. Truly He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
القرآن:٣٩:٥٣

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ  

{قل يا عبادي الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم لا تقنطوا} بكسر النون وفتحها، وقرئ بضمها تيأسوا {من رحمة الله إن الله يغفر الذنوب جميعا} لمن تاب من الشرك {إنه هو الغفور الرحيم}.
quran:39:54

And return ˹in repentance˺ to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.  

And turn, return, ˹penitently˺ to your Lord and submit, perform deeds sincerely, to Him, before the chastisement comes on you, whereupon you will not be helped, to ward it off, if you have not repented.
القرآن:٣٩:٥٤

وَأَنِيبُوا إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَكُمُ الْعَذَابُ ثُمَّ لَا تُنْصَرُونَ  

{وأنيبوا} ارجعوا {إلى ربكم وأسلموا} أخلصوا العمل {له من قبل أن يأتيكم العذاب ثم لا تنصرون} بمنعه إن لم تتوبوا.
quran:39:55

And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,  

And follow the best of what has been revealed to you from your Lord — namely, the Qur’ān — before the chastisement comes on you suddenly while you are unaware’, of the time ˹of its arrival˺ until it has ˹actually˺ come;
القرآن:٣٩:٥٥

وَاتَّبِعُوا أَحْسَنَ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَكُمُ الْعَذَابُ بَغْتَةً وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ  

{واتبعوا أحسن ما أنزل إليكم من ربكم} هو القرآن {من قبل أن يأتيكم العذاب بغتة وأنتم لا تشعرون} قبل إتيانه بوقته.
quran:39:56

Lest a soul should say, "Oh ˹how great is˺ my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allah and that I was among the mockers."  

so apply yourselves to this, before any soul should say, ‘Alas for me (yā hasratā is actually yā hasratī, meaning ‘O regret of mine’) for what I have neglected of my duty to God, in other words, ˹of˺ obedience to Him. Indeed (wa-in: in is softened in place of the hardened form, in other words ˹understand it as˺ wa-innī) I was among those who ridiculed’, His religion and His Book;
القرآن:٣٩:٥٦

أَنْ تَقُولَ نَفْسٌ يَا حَسْرَتَىٰ عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطْتُ فِي جَنْبِ اللَّهِ وَإِنْ كُنْتُ لَمِنَ السَّاخِرِينَ  

فبادروا قبل {أن تقول نفسٌ يا حسرتى} أصله يا حسرتي، أي ندامتي {على ما فرطت في جنب الله} أي طاعته {وإن} مخففة من الثقيلة، وإني {كنت لمن الساخرين} بدينه وكتابه.
quran:39:57

Or ˹lest˺ it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."  

or ˹before˺ that it should say, ‘If only God had guided me, to obedience and I had become guided, I would have been among those who have feared’, His chastisement;
القرآن:٣٩:٥٧

أَوْ تَقُولَ لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ هَدَانِي لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ  

{أو تقول لو أن الله هداني} بالطاعة فاهتديت {لكنت من المتقين} عذابه.
quran:39:58

Or ˹lest˺ it say when it sees the punishment, "If only I had another turn so I could be among the doers of good."  

or ˹before˺ that it should say, when it sees the chastisement, ‘If only there had been a second chance, a return to this world, I would be among the virtuous’, the believers. It is then said to him by God:
القرآن:٣٩:٥٨

أَوْ تَقُولَ حِينَ تَرَى الْعَذَابَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي كَرَّةً فَأَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ  

{أو تقول حين ترى العذاب لو أن لي كرَّة} رجعة إلى الدنيا {فأكون من المحسنين} المؤمنين، فيقال له من قبل الله.
quran:39:59

But yes, there had come to you My verses, but you denied them and were arrogant, and you were among the disbelievers.  

‘Yes indeed! My signs came to you, the Qur’ān — which is the means to guidance — but you denied them and were arrogant, you disdained to believe in them, and you were among the disbelievers’.
القرآن:٣٩:٥٩

بَلَىٰ قَدْ جَاءَتْكَ آيَاتِي فَكَذَّبْتَ بِهَا وَاسْتَكْبَرْتَ وَكُنْتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ  

{بلى قد جاءتك آياتي} القرآن وهو سبب الهداية {فكذبت بها واستكبرت} تكبرت عن الإيمان بها {وكنت من الكافرين}.
quran:39:60

And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied about Allah ˹with˺ their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?  

And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who imputed lies to God, by ascribing partner and child to Him, with their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a ˹fitting˺ abode for those who are ˹too˺ arrogant?, to believe? Indeed ˹there is˺.
القرآن:٣٩:٦٠

وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ تَرَى الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ وُجُوهُهُمْ مُسْوَدَّةٌ ۚ أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ  

{ويوم القيامة ترى الذين كذبوا على الله} بنسبة الشريك والولد إليه {وجوههم مسودة أليس في جهنم مشوى} مأوى {للمتكبرين} عن الإيمان؟ بلى.
quran:39:61

And Allah will save those who feared Him by their attainment; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.  

And God will deliver, from Hell, those who fear, idolatry, because of their triumph, that is, on account of the place they have won in Paradise, by placing them in it. No evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.
القرآن:٣٩:٦١

وَيُنَجِّي اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا بِمَفَازَتِهِمْ لَا يَمَسُّهُمُ السُّوءُ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ  

{وينجَّي الله} من جهنم {الذين اتقوْا} الشرك {بمفازتهم} أي بمكان فوزهم من الجنة بأن يجعلوا فيه {لا يمسهم السوء ولا هم يحزنون}.
quran:39:62

Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.  

God is the Creator of all things and He is Guardian over all things, disposing of them as He will.
القرآن:٣٩:٦٢

اللَّهُ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ ۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَكِيلٌ  

{الله خالق كل شيء وهو على كل شيء وكيل} متصرف فيه كيف يشاء.
quran:39:63

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the verses of Allah - it is those who are the losers.  

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth, in other words, the keys to their storehouses of rain and vegetation and other things. And those who disbelieve in the signs of God, ˹such as˺ the Qur’ān — those, they are the losers (ūlā’ika humu’l-khāsirūna is semantically connected to His words wayunajjī’Llāhu’lladhīna ittaqaw, ‘and God will deliver those who guarded themselves …’ to the end ˹of that statement˺; the intervening statements are parentheticals).
القرآن:٣٩:٦٣

لَهُ مَقَالِيدُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۗ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ  

{له مقاليد السماوات والأرض} أي مفاتيح خزائنهما من المطر والنبات وغيرهما {والذين كفروا بآيات الله} القرآن {أولئك هم الخاسرون} متصل بقوله: (وينجي الله الذين اتقوا) 000الخ وما بينهما اعتراض.
