Do not fast till you see the new moon, and do not break fast till you see it; but if the weather is cloudy calculate about it.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ

The month is thus and thus. (He then withdrew his thumb at the third time). He then said: Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it, and if the weather is cloudy calculate it (the months of Sha'ban and Shawwal) as thirty days.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَضَرَبَ بِيَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا ثُمَّ عَقَدَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ فَصُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ ثَلاَثِينَ

If (the sky) is cloudy for you, then calculate thirty days (for the month of Ramadan).

وَقَالَ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا ثَلاَثِينَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ

The month may consist of twenty-nine days, and it may be thus, thus and thus, and (he further) said: Calculate it, but he did not say thirty.

وَقَالَ ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَقَالَ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ ثَلاَثِينَ

The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَلاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ

The month (of Ramadan) may consist of twenty nine days; so when you see the new moon observe fast and when you see (the new moon again at the commencement of the month of Shawwal) then break It, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate it (and complete thirty days).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلاَلَ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ

When you see the new moon, observe fast, and when you see it (again) then break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate it.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ

The month may consist of twenty-nine nights. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break it till you have sighted it, except when the sky is cloudy for you, and if it is so, then calculate it.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يُغَمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ

The month is thus and thus and thus (i. e. pointing with his fingers thrice), and he held back his thumb at the third time (in order to show that it can also consist of twenty-nine days).

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَقَبَضَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ

The month may consist of twenty-nine days.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ

The month (of Ramadan) is thus and thus, and thus. i.e. ten, ten and nine.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا عَشْرًا وَعَشْرًا وَتِسْعًا

The month is thus, and thus, and thus, and he flapped his hands with all their fingers twice. but at the third turn, folded his right thumb or left thumb (in order to give an idea of twenty-nine).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الشَّهْرُ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَكَذَا وَصَفَّقَ بِيَدَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ بِكُلِّ أَصَابِعِهِمَا وَنَقَصَ فِي الصَّفْقَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ إِبْهَامَ الْيُمْنَى أَوِ الْيُسْرَى

The month (of Ramadan) may consist of twenty nine days, and Shu'ba (one of the narrators) (gave a practical demonstration how the Holy prophet ﷺ explained to them) by unfolding his hands thrice and folding his thumb at the third turn. 'Uqba (one of the narrators in this chain of transmitters) said: I think that he said that the month consists of thirty days and unfolded his palm three times.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ وَطَبَّقَ شُعْبَةُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ وَكَسَرَ الإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ قَالَ عُقْبَةُ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ الشَّهْرُ ثَلاَثُونَ وَطَبَّقَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ

This night is the midnight (of the month). Upon this he said to him: How do you know that it is the midnight (of the month), for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: The month is thus and thus (and he pointed with his ten fingers twice) and thus (i. e. at the third time he pointed with all his fingers but withdrew or folded his thumb)?

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ الْعَشْرِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَهَكَذَا فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَأَشَارَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ كُلِّهَا وَحَبَسَ أَوْ خَنَسَ إِبْهَامَهُ

Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast. and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلاَلَ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَصُومُوا ثَلاَثِينَ يَوْمًا

Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break (fast) on sighting it (the new moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty).

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعَدَدَ

Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break it on sighting it. But if (due to clouds) the actual position of the month is concealed from you, you should then count thirty (days).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمُ الشَّهْرُ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاَثِينَ

Observe fast when you see it (the new moon) and break fast when you see it (the new moon of Shawwal), but when (the actual position of the month is) concealed from you (on account of cloudy sky), then count thirty days.

ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْهِلاَلَ فَقَالَ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاَثِينَ

"Do not fast until you see the crescent, and do not stop fasting until you see it, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then work it out."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ

"We are an unlettered Ummah, we do not use astronomical counting or computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," he did three times, showing it as twenty-nine.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لاَ نَكْتُبُ وَلاَ نَحْسِبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا ثَلاَثًا حَتَّى ذَكَرَ تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ

he heard Ibn 'Umar narrate that the Prophet said; "We are an unlettered Ummah; we do not use computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," and he held down his thumb the last time. "And the month is like this, and this, and this," completing thirty.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لاَ نَحْسِبُ وَلاَ نَكْتُبُ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَعَقَدَ الإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا تَمَامَ الثَّلاَثِينَ

The Prophet ﷺ said: The month consists of twenty-nine days, but do not fast till you sight it (the moon) and do not break your fast till you sight it. If the weather is cloudy, calculate it thirty days. When the twenty-ninth of Sha'ban came, Ibn Umar would send someone (who tried) to sight the moon for him. If it was sighted, then well and good; in case it was not sighted, and there was no cloud and dust before him (on the horizon), he would not keep fast the next day. If there appeared (on the horizon) before him cloud or dust, he would fast the following day. Ibn Umar would end his fasting alone with the people, and did not follow this calculation.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لاَ نَكْتُبُ وَلاَ نَحْسُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَخَنَسَ سُلَيْمَانُ أُصْبَعَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ يَعْنِي تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ وَثَلاَثِينَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not begin the fast until you see the new moon, and do not break the fast (at the end of Ramadan) until you see it. If the new moon is obscured from you, then work out (when it should be)."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A month has twenty-nine days in it. Do not start the fast or break it until you see the new moon. If the new moon is obscured from you, then work out (when it should be)."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَلاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Thawr ibn Zayd ad-Dili from Abdullah ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not start the fast or break it until you see the new moon. If the new moon is obscured from you, then complete a full thirty days."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاَثِينَ

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that once in the time of Uthman ibn Affan the new moon had been seen in the afternoon and Uthman did not break his fast until evening had come and the sun had set. Yahya said that he had heard Malik say that some one who sees the new moon of Ramadan when he is on his own should start the fast and not break it if he knows that that day is part of Ramadan. He added, "Some one who sees the new moon of Shawwal when he is on his own does not break the fast, because people suspect the reliability of someone among them who breaks the fast. Such people should say, when they sight the new moon, 'We have seen the new moon.' Whoever sees the new moon of Shawwal during the day should not break his fast but should continue fasting for the rest of that day. This is because it is really the new moon of the night that is coming ." Yahya said that he heard Malik say, "If people are fasting on the day of Fitr thinking that it is still Ramadan and then definite evidence comes to them that the new moon of Ramadan had been seen one day before they began to fast and that they are now into the thirty- first day, then they should break the fast on that day at whatever time the news comes to them. However, they do not pray the id prayer if they hear the news after the sun has begun to decline."

أَنَّ الْهِلاَلَ رُئِيَ فِي زَمَانِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ بِعَشِيٍّ فَلَمْ يُفْطِرْ عُثْمَانُ حَتَّى أَمْسَى وَغَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ يَحْيَى سَمِعْتُ مَالِكًا يَقُولُ فِي الَّذِي يَرَى هِلاَلَ رَمَضَانَ وَحْدَهُ أَنَّهُ يَصُومُ لاَ يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ وَمَنْ رَأَى هِلاَلَ شَوَّالٍ وَحْدَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يُفْطِرُ لأَنَّ النَّاسَ يَتَّهِمُونَ عَلَى أَنْ يُفْطِرَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ لَيْسَ مَأْمُونًا وَيَقُولُ أُولَئِكَ إِذَا ظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ رَأَيْنَا الْهِلاَلَ وَمَنْ رَأَى هِلاَلَ شَوَّالٍ نَهَارًا فَلاَ يُفْطِرْ وَيُتِمُّ صِيَامَ يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ هِلاَلُ اللَّيْلَةِ الَّتِي تَأْتِي قَالَ يَحْيَى وَسَمِعْتُ مَالِكًا يَقُولُ إِذَا صَامَ النَّاسُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَجَاءَهُمْ ثَبَتٌ أَنَّ هِلاَلَ رَمَضَانَ قَدْ رُئِيَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَصُومُوا بِيَوْمٍ وَأَنَّ يَوْمَهُمْ ذَلِكَ أَحَدٌ وَثَلاَثُونَ فَإِنَّهُمْ يُفْطِرُونَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ أَيَّةَ سَاعَةٍ جَاءَهُمُ الْخَبَرُ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُمْ لاَ يُصَلُّونَ صَلاَةَ الْعِيدِ إِنْ كَانَ ذَلِكَ جَاءَهُمْ بَعْدَ زَوَالِ الشَّمْسِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "Only some one who makes the intention to fast before dawn (actually) fasts."

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ لاَ يَصُومُ إِلاَّ مَنْ أَجْمَعَ الصِّيَامَ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ

he heard Ibn 'Umar narrate that the Prophet said; "We are an unlettered Ummah; we do not use computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," and he held down his thumb the last time. "And the month is like this, and this, and this," completing thirty. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2141)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَعَقَدَ الْإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا يَعْنِي تَمَامَ ثَلَاثِينَ

"D not fast until you see it , and do not stop fasting until you see it, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then work it out." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2122)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Indeed, we are an unlettered nation, we do not write nor calculate. And indeed, the month is like this and this and this, then it decreases one day in every third month."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ وَإِنَّ الشَّهْرَ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا ثُمَّ نَقَصَ وَاحِدَةً فِي الثَّالِثَةِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We are an illiterate community who does not calculate or write the month like this and this and this," and he folded his thumb on the third finger.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَحْنُ أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا نَحْسُبُ وَلَا نَكْتُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَقَبَضَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see the crescent moon. Alternatively, he said, 'Fast after sighting it and break your fast after sighting it. If it is obscured for you, complete thirty days.' Shu'bah said, 'And my most knowledgeable opinion is that he said, 'Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see the crescent moon.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ أَوْ قَالَ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غَبِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا ثَلَاثِينَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَكْثَرُ عِلْمِي أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ

"Do not fast until you see the crescent, and do not stop fasting until you see it, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then work it out." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2121)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ «لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ»

"the Messenger of Allah said: 'Fast when you see it and stop fasting when you see it, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then count it as thirty (days). "' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2117)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ «صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمُ الشَّهْرُ فَعُدُّوا ثَلَاثِينَ»

" I am surprised at those who anticipate the moth, when the Messenger of Allah said: 'When you see the new crescent then fast, and when you see it, then stop fasting, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then complete thirty days. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2125)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا»

We are an unlettered people who can neither write nor count. The month is thus, and thus. folding his thumb when he said it the third time. (Using translation from Muslim 1080n)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمَيَّةٌ لَا نَحْسُبُ وَلَا نَكْتُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَعَقَدَ الْإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا تَمَامُ الثَّلَاثِينَ»

We are an unlettered people who can neither write nor count. The month is thus, and thus. folding his thumb when he said it the third time. (Using translation from Muslim 1080n)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لَا نَحْسُبُ وَلَا نَكْتُبُ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا» وَعَقَدَ الْإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا تَمَامَ الثَّلَاثِينَ

[Machine] I heard a man ask the Prophet ﷺ about the day in which some people doubt whether it belongs to Sha'ban or Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see the crescent moon. But if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the count of thirty days."

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي يُشَكُّ فِيهِ فَيَقُولُ بَعْضُهُمْ هَذَا مِنْ شَعْبَانَ وَبَعْضُهُمْ هَذَا مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوَا الْهِلَالَ وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوَا الْهِلَالَ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلَاثِينَ

[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said: 'We are an illiterate nation, we do not write or calculate. The month is like this and like this and like this,' and he folded his finger three times, meaning thirty. This Hadith is mentioned in Sahih Muslim from the narration of Shu'bah."

النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَقَبَضَ إِصْبَعَهُ وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا يَعْنِي ثَلَاثِينَ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ

"لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوا الهِلَال، ولَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيكُم فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ".

"لَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوا الهِلَال، فإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيكُم فَأَكْمِلُوا العِدَّةَ ثَلَاثِينَ".

"إِنَّا أمَّةٌ أمِّيَّةٌ، لا نَكْتب ولا نَحْسُبُ الشهر هكذا وهكذا وهكذا؛ وعقد الإِبهام في الثالثة والشَّهرُ هكذا وهكذا وهكذا. يعنى مرةً تسعةً وعشرين، ومرةً ثلاثين".
