While the people were performing the dawn prayer in Masjid Qubā’, a man came and said, “Allah has revealed to the Prophet ﷺ Quran commanding him to face the Kabah, so face it.” So they turned toward the Kabah.

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ الصُّبْحَ فِي مَسْجِدِ قُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَ جَاءٍ فَقَالَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قُرْآنًا أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا فَتَوَجَّهُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

While some people were offering Fajr prayer at Quba' (mosque), some-one came to them and said, "Tonight some Qur'anic Verses have been revealed to the Prophet ﷺ and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (at Mecca) (during prayers), so you too should turn your faces towards it." At that time their faces were towards Sham (Jerusalem) so they turned towards the Kaʿba (at Mecca).

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

While some people were at Quba (offering) morning prayer, a man came to them and said, "Last night Qur'anic Verses have been revealed whereby the Prophet ﷺ has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (at Mecca), so you too should face it." So they, keeping their postures, turned towards the Kaʿba. Formerly the people were facing Sham (Jerusalem) (Allah said):-- "And from whence-so-ever you start forth (for prayers), turn your face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque of Mecca (Al-Masjid-ul-Haram), and whence-so-ever you are, turn your face towards it (when you pray)" (2.150)

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ فِي الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أُنْزِلَ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ فَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَاسْتَدَارُوا كَهَيْئَتِهِمْ فَتَوَجَّهُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ وَكَانَ وَجْهُ النَّاسِ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ

While some people were offering Fajr prayer at Quba mosque, someone came to them and said, "Qur'anic literature" has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight, and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (of Mecca) so you too, should turn your faces towards it. Their faces were then towards Sham (Jerusalem), so they turned towards the Qibla (i.e. Kaʿba of Mecca).

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ

While the people were at ˹Masjid˺ Qubā’ performing the morning prayer, a messenger came to them and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has had Quran revealed to him tonight, and he has been commanded to face the Kaabah, so ˹you must˺ face it.” They were facing ˹North˺ toward Sham (Jerusalem), then they turned around ˹toward the South to face˺ the Kaabah.

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

While the people were at Quba offering the morning prayer, suddenly a person came to them saying, "Tonight Divine Inspiration has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (in prayers): therefore you people should face it." There faces were towards Sham, so they turned their faces towards the Kaʿba (at Mecca).

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

As the people were praying at Quba' a man came to them and said: It has been revealed to file Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the night and he has been directed to turn towards the Ka'ba. So turn towards it. Their faces were towards Syria and they turned round towards Ka'ba.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

"While the people were in Quba praying Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he had been commanded to face Ka'bah. So face toward it. They had been facing toward Ash-Sham, so they turned to face toward Ka'bah."

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَاسْتَقْبَلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

"While the people were in Quba', praying the Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he has been commanded to face the Ka'bah. So they turned around, and they has been facing toward Ash-Sham, but now they turned to face toward the Ka'bah."

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "On one occasion when the people were praying subhat Quba a man came to them and said, 'A piece of Qur'an was sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ last night, and he was ordered to face the Kaba, so face it.' They had been facing ash-Sham, so they turned round and faced the Kaba.''

أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

[Machine] While the people were praying the morning prayer in the Mosque of Qubā’, a man came and said, “A Qur’anic revelation has been sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight, and he has been commanded to face the Ka‘bah. So face it.” They turned around and directed themselves toward the Ka‘bah.

The people's faces were initially directed towards Sham (Syria) but they turned and faced towards the Kaaba.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فِي قُبَاءٍ إذ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنُ وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَ وُجهُ النَّاسِ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا فَوَجَّهُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ»

"While the people were in Quba', praying the Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he has been commanded to face the Ka'bah.
