Change of the Qiblah: Congregants at Masjid Quba turn to the Kaabah during Fajr after Revelation

While the people were at Quba offering the morning prayer, suddenly a person came to them saying, "Tonight Divine Inspiration has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (in prayers): therefore you people should face it." There faces were towards Sham, so they turned their faces towards the Kaʿba (at Mecca).

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

While some people were offering Fajr prayer at Quba' (mosque), some-one came to them and said, "Tonight some Qur'anic Verses have been revealed to the Prophet ﷺ and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (at Mecca) (during prayers), so you too should turn your faces towards it." At that time their faces were towards Sham (Jerusalem) so they turned towards the Kaʿba (at Mecca).

بَيْنَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

While some people were offering Fajr prayer at Quba mosque, someone came to them and said, "Qur'anic literature" has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight, and he has been ordered to face the Kaʿba (of Mecca) so you too, should turn your faces towards it. Their faces were then towards Sham (Jerusalem), so they turned towards the Qibla (i.e. Kaʿba of Mecca).

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ

While the people were in the morning at Qubā’, a man came to them and said, “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been given a revelation of the Quran tonight, and he has been commanded to face the Kabah. So ˹you must˺ face it.” The people had been facing Sham (Jerusalem), so they turned their faces toward the Kabah.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ أَلاَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَ وَجْهُ النَّاسِ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا بِوُجُوهِهِمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

As the people were praying at Quba' a man came to them and said: It has been revealed to file Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the night and he has been directed to turn towards the Ka'ba. So turn towards it. Their faces were towards Syria and they turned round towards Ka'ba.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

"While the people were in Quba praying Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he had been commanded to face Ka'bah. So face toward it. They had been facing toward Ash-Sham, so they turned to face toward Ka'bah."

"While the people were in Quba', praying the Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he has been commanded to face the Ka'bah. So they turned around, and they has been facing toward Ash-Sham, but now they turned to face toward the Ka'bah."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "On one occasion when the people were praying subhat Quba a man came to them and said, 'A piece of Qur'an was sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ last night, and he was ordered to face the Kaba, so face it.' They had been facing ash-Sham, so they turned round and faced the Kaba.''

أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءٍ فِي صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَقَدْ أُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ

"While the people were in Quba', praying the Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he has been commanded to face the Ka'bah. [Machine] While the people were praying the morning prayer in the Mosque of Qubā’, a man came and said, “A Qur’anic revelation has been sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight, and he has been commanded to face the Ka‘bah. So face it.” They turned around and directed themselves toward the Ka‘bah.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ فِي مَسْجِدِ قُبَاءَ الْغَدَاةَ إِذْ جَاءَ جَاءٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ وَأُمِرَ أَنْ تُسْتَقْبَلَ الْكَعْبَةُ فَاسْتَقْبَلُوهَا وَاسْتَدَارُوا فَتَوَجَّهُوا نَحْوَ الْكَعْبَةِ

[Machine] While people were performing the Fajr prayer in Quba, a man came to them and said, "Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been revealed the Quran and he has been commanded to face the Kaaba in prayer, so face towards it." The people's faces were initially directed towards Sham (Syria) but they turned and faced towards the Kaaba.

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فِي قُبَاءٍ إذ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنُ وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَ وُجهُ النَّاسِ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا فَوَجَّهُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ»

"While the people were in Quba', praying the Subh prayer, someone came to them and said that revelation had come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the night before, and he has been commanded to face the Ka'bah. So they turned around, and they has been facing toward Ash-Sham, but now they turned to face toward the Ka'bah." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 493)

While some people were offering morning prayer at Quba' a man came to them and said, "A Qur'anic Order has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight that he should face the Kaʿba at Mecca (in prayer), so you too should turn your faces towards it." At that moment their faces were towards Sham (i.e. Jerusalem) (and on hearing that) they turned towards the Kaʿba (at Mecca). (Using translation from Bukhārī 4490)

بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ بِقُبَاءَ فِي صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ جَاءَهُمْ آتٍ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا وَكَانَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ إِلَى الشَّامِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ»

While the people were offering the Fajr prayer at Quba' (near Medina), someone came to them and said: "It has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight, and he has been ordered to pray facing the Kaʿba." So turn your faces to the Kaʿba. Those people were facing Sham (Jerusalem) so they turned their faces towards Kaʿba (at Mecca). (Using translation from Bukhārī 403)

[AI] While the people of Qubā’ were performing the dawn prayer, a messenger came to them and said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been sent down Qur’an tonight, and he has been commanded to face the Ka‘bah; so face it.” Their faces had been toward Syria, so they turned around toward the Ka‘bah.
