    [1]

All Prophets commanded to pray

Hadith: Command to hold hands a certain way in prayer

Indeed, we, the prophets, were commanded to delay our suhur, hasten our iftar, and hold our right hand upon the left hand during our prayers.

Hadith: Times of the prayer same as previous prophets

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Gabriel ﷺ led me in prayer at the House … Then turning to me he said: Muhammad, this is the time observed by the prophets before you, and the time is anywhere between two times.

Stories of their prayer

Adam

Adam turning to Allah

2:37 Then Adam received from his Lord ˹some˺ words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Adam and Hawaa's dua

7:23 They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

Ibrahim, 2000–1500 BCE

  • Lineage: [[Talk > Prophet Ibrahim|Prophet Ibrahim]] < Tarih < Nahudh < Sarugh < Arghu < Faligh < Abir < Shalikh < Sam (Shem) < Nuh
  • One of the five [[Messengers of Firm Resolve]]
  • Quran calls him "Your father Ibrahim"
  • Called his people to worship Allah alone, rejecting idols—even confronting his father and smashing the idols to show their helplessness.
  • Thrown into a blazing fire by his people, but Allah made the fire cool and safe for him.

Allah describes him as the one who prayed

16:120 Indeed, Abraham was a ˹comprehensive˺ leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.

Hadith: Allah sent angels to pray with him

[Machine] Indeed, Ibrahim, ﷺ , said, "O my Lord, it saddens me that I do not see anyone else on earth worshipping you besides me." So Allah sent angels down to him who prayed with him.

Ibrahim's dua

  • Left his wife Hajar and infant son Ismail in the barren desert of Makkah by Allah’s command, trusting fully in His plan.
  • Hajar ran between [[Safa and Marwah]] searching for water until Allah caused the well of Zamzam to gush beneath Ismail’s feet.

14:37 Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

  • He was tested with the command to sacrifice his son, and both submitted—Allah replaced the son with a ram and praised Ibrahim’s sincerity.
  • Later, Ibrahim and Ismail rebuilt the Kabah and made dua for their descendants to remain devoted to Allah.

Ismail

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Ismail]] < [[Talk > Prophet Ibrahim|Prophet Ibrahim]]
  • Born to Ibrahim's melk yamin, [[Lady Hajar]]
  • Continued the legacy of tawhid after his father
  • the Prophet stems from the lineage of Ismail

The Prophet is the realization of the dua of Ibrahim

2:127 And ˹mention˺ when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and ˹with him˺ Ishmael, ˹saying˺, "Our Lord, accept ˹this˺ from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. 128 Our Lord, and make us Muslims ˹in submission˺ to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation ˹in submission˺ to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. 129 Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

Enjoined salah to his family

19:54 And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet. 55 And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakah and was to his Lord pleasing.

Ishaq

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Ishaq]] < [[Talk > Prophet Ibrahim|Prophet Ibrahim]]
  • Born to Ibrahim's wife, [[Lady Sarah]] in old age as a miracle
  • Father of [[Prophet Yaqub]]
  • Continued the legacy of tawhid after his father

Ibrahim's dua for to make his children establishers of Salah

14:39 Praise to Allah, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication. 40 My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and ˹many˺ from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication. 41 Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."

Tashahhud and blessings upon Ibrahim

Hadith: Dua for blessings upon Ibrahim in our prayer

    ~~ ~~

'O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.'

Lut

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Lut]] < Haran < Tarih < Nahudh < Sarygh
  • Nephew of Ibrahim from his brother Haran
  • Believed in his uncle’s message and migrated with him to the Blessed Land
  • Sent to the people of Sodom
  • Warned his people against deviant sexuality
  • Allah destroyed the people with a severe punishment, except Lut including his wife

Yaqub

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Ishaq]] < [[Talk > Prophet Ibrahim|Prophet Ibrahim]]

  • Father of 12 prophets including [[Prophet Yusuf]]

21:71 And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. 72 And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all ˹of them˺ We made righteous. 73 And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.

Shuayb

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Shuayb]] < Yubub < Ifa < Madyan < Ibrahim
  • Considered to be an Arab prophet
  • Likely not the same as the Musa's father-in-law and there is a difference of opinion.
  • Sent to the people of [[Madyan]], who were known for cheating in trade and corrupt business practices.
  • He called them to worship Allah and be honest in their dealings, but they mocked him and threatened to expel him.
  • Allah destroyed them with a mighty earthquake and punishment, while he and the believers were saved

Making fun of Shuayb's prayer

  • It is said that Shuayb used to pray a lot

11:87 They said, "O Shuayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the discerning!"

Musa & Harun, 1500–1200 BCE

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Musa]] < Imran < Qahith < Lawi < Yaqub < Ishaq < Ibrahim
  • One of the five [[Messengers of Firm Resolve]]
  • Chosen by Allah to confront Pharaoh, who was oppressing the Israelites; with Allah’s support, he performed miracles like the staff turning into a serpent and his hand shining with light
  • He led the Israelites out of Egypt, and by Allah’s command, the sea was split, saving them and drowning Pharaoh and his army.
  • Received the Torah but found his people worshipping a golden calf—he rebuked them and continued to guide them through hardship with patience and leadership.

First commandments to Musa

20:12 Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa. 13 And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed ˹to you˺. 14 Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. 15 Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.

Pray inside your homes due to fear of Pharaoh

10:87 And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses ˹facing the˺ qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers."

Hadith: Praying in his grave

I came. And in the narration transmitted on the authority of Haddib (the words are): I happened to pass by Moses on the occasion of the Night journey near the red mound (and found him) saying his prayer in his grave.

Dawud, 1000 BCE

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Dawud]] < Isha < Uwaydh < Bair < Salmun < Nahshun < Aminadhib < Iram < Hasrun < Faris < Yahudha < Yaqub < Ishaq < Ibrahim
  • Was a righteous prophet and king chosen by Allah, known for his wisdom, justice, and beautiful recitation of the [[Zabur]].
  • Defeated the giant [[Jalut]] (Goliath) with a sling, showing his courage and reliance on Allah.
  • Was blessed with a just kingdom,
  • Given the ability to understand animals and birds, and made the mountains and birds glorify Allah with him.

Hadith: Dawud loved prayers

Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, "The most beloved prayer to Allah is that of David and the most beloved fasts to Allah are those of David. He used to sleep for half of the night and then pray for one third of the night and again sleep for its sixth part and used to fast on alternate days."

Hadith: He made dua for the love of Allah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “It used to be from the supplication of Dawud that he would say: ‘O Allah, indeed, I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the action that will cause me to attain Your love, O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family and cold water (Allāhumma innī as’aluka ḥubbaka wa ḥubba man yuḥibbuka wal-ʿamalalladhī yuballighunī ḥubbak. Allāhummajʿal ḥubbaka aḥabba ilaiyya min nafsī, wa ahlī wa minal-mā’il-bārid) He said: “And when the Prophet ﷺ would mention Dawud, he would narrate about him, saying: “He was the best in worship out of all men.”

Mountains and birds praising Allah along with him

38:17 Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back ˹to Allah˺. 18 Indeed, We subjected the mountains ˹to praise˺ with him, exalting ˹Allah˺ in the ˹late˺ afternoon and ˹after˺ sunrise. 19 And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating ˹praises˺.

When Dawud rushed to judgement without asking the other brother

  • Two men climbed into his private chamber and presented a case—one claiming the other had 99 ewes and took his only one.
  • He quickly ruled in favor of the one who complained

38:24 ˹David˺ said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe ˹in addition˺ to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing ˹in prostration˺ and turned in repentance ˹to Allah˺. 25 So We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.

Sulayman, 931 BCE

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Sulayman]] < [[Prophet Dawud]]
  • Was a prophet-king blessed with wisdom, justice, and the ability to understand and speak to animals, birds, and command jinn and the wind.
  • Commanded the jinn to build structures and extract resources, but his death was hidden from them until a creature gnawed his staff—proving they do not know the unseen.
  • Showed gratitude to Allah and used his powers to rule with justice and invite others to tawhid, including [[Queen of Sheba]], who embraced Islam after witnessing his miracles.
  • He remains a model of thankful leadership, spiritual insight, and submission to Allah despite his immense power.

Sulayman misses the Asr prayer

  • Was reviewing his well-trained, beautiful horses.
  • Became so engrossed that he missed the Asr prayer. Realizing this, he blamed himself for letting anything distract him from the remembrance of Allah

38:30 And to David We gave Solomon. An excellent servant, indeed he was one repeatedly turning back ˹to Allah˺. 31 ˹Mention˺ when there were exhibited before him in the afternoon the poised ˹standing˺ racehorses. 32 And he said, "Indeed, I gave preference to the love of good ˹things˺ over the remembrance of my Lord until the sun disappeared into the curtain ˹of darkness˺." 33 ˹He said˺, "Return them to me," and set about striking ˹their˺ legs and necks… 40 And indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.

Luqman

  • Nephew of [[Prophet Ayyub]]
  • An Israelite judge or a Ethiopian man
  • Quran says that he was given wisdom
  • Majority says he was not a prophet

Luqman is given wisdom to be grateful

31:12 And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom ˹and said˺, "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for ˹the benefit of˺ himself. And whoever denies ˹His favor˺ - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Luqman advising his son

  • Worship only Allah ﷻ, avoid shirk, and be grateful to Him.
  • Be humble, speak kindly, establish prayer, and treat parents with respect.

31:13 And ˹mention, O Muhammad˺, when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate ˹anything˺ with Allah. Indeed, association ˹with him˺ is great injustice." 14 And We have enjoined upon man ˹care˺ for his parents. His mother carried him, ˹increasing her˺ in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the ˹final˺ destination. 15 But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in ˹this˺ world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me ˹in repentance˺. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. 16 ˹And Luqman said˺, "O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or ˹anywhere˺ in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted. 17 O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, ˹all˺ that is of the matters ˹requiring˺ determination. 18 And do not turn your cheek ˹in contempt˺ toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful. 19 And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."

Ilyas (Elijah), 800 BCE

  • Idolatry begins in Israel (Northern Kingdom)

[[Ilyas]] (Elijah) calling people to stop worshiping Baal

37:123 And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers, 124 When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah? 125 Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators - 126 Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?" 127 And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought ˹for punishment˺, 128 Except the chosen servants of Allah. 129 And We left for him ˹favorable mention˺ among later generations: 130 "Peace upon Elias." 131 Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. 132 Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Yunus (Jonah), 780 BCE

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Yunus]] < Mata < the children of Yaqub < Ishaq < Ibrahim
  • Before Neo-Assyrian [[Ancient Empires#Assyrian Empire (Neo) , 600 BC|Neo-Assyrian]] conquest
  • Before the loss of the 10 tribes of Israel
  • Sent to the people of Nineveh, but when they rejected his message, he left them without Allah’s permission.
  • Boarded a ship, was thrown overboard, and swallowed by a whale, where he made sincere dua.
  • Allah forgave him and saved him, and he returned to find his people had believed and repented, so Allah ﷻ had mercy on them all.

Yunus was one who prayed a lot

37:139 And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers. 140 ˹Mention˺ when he ran away to the laden ship. 141 And he drew lots and was among the losers. 142 Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy. 143 And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, 144 He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

  • He used to pray a lot of long prayers during times of ease (Ibn Abbas, Suddi, Said b. Jubayr, Qatadah)

  • He prayed inside the belly of the whale (Hasan al-Basri)

  • Others say he made the dua:

  • His dua would not have been accepted unless his good deeds raised his dua

21:87 And ˹mention˺ the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree ˹anything˺ upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." 88 So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.

Maryam

Birth of Maryam

3:35 ˹Mention, O Muhammad˺, when the wife of 'Imran said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated ˹for Your service˺, so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." 36 But when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and ˹for˺ her descendants from Satan, the expelled ˹from the mercy of Allah˺."

See Gospel of James (2 CE)
The Gospel of James (or the Protoevangelium of James) is a second-century apocryphal infancy gospel telling of the miraculous conception of the Virgin Mary,

  • Lineage: [[Maryam]] < Imran < Mathan < the children of Yahudha < Harun < Yaqub
  • Was chosen and purified by Allah above all other women, raised in devotion under the care of [[Prophet Zakariyyah]], who witnessed miracles in her care.
  • Jibril appeared to her with the news that she would miraculously give birth to a pure son, despite never being touched by any man.
  • Gave birth to Isa alone, trusted in Allah, and returned with him to her people—who were silenced when her baby spoke from the cradle.

Maryam in her mihrab

  • Her mother, Hannah, dedicated her unborn child to the service of Allah, hoping for a son, but was blessed with a daughter—whom Allah ﷻ accepted and nurtured beautifully.
  • Zakariyyah became her guardian, and whenever he visited her...

3:37 So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this ˹coming˺ to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."

Command for Maryam to pray

3:42 And ˹mention˺ when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. 43 O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow ˹in prayer˺."

Zakariyyah

  • Lineage: [[Zakariyah]] < Bashwa < the children of Yahudha < Harun < Yaqub
  • Was a devoted prophet and temple priest who took on guardianship for Maryam

Zakariyyah's dua accepted while he was praying

  • Inspired by the miracles around [[Maryam]], made dua for a righteous child despite his old age and his wife’s barrenness.
  • Allah responded to his dua with glad tidings of a son, [[Prophet Yahya]]

3:38 At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, …

19:5 And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir 6 Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing ˹to You˺."

3:38 At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication." 39 So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and ˹who will be˺ honorable, abstaining ˹from women˺, and a prophet from among the righteous."

Was ordered not to speak to people for three days

  • Was given a sign that he would not speak to people for three days except through gestures, because he asked Allah for confirmation
  • He praised Allah constantly during that time
  • Gestured people to pray morning and evening

3:41 He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He Said, "Your sign is that you will not ˹be able to˺ speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt ˹Him with praise˺ in the evening and the morning."

19:11 So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt ˹Allah˺ in the morning and afternoon.

Yayha

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Yahya]] < [[Prophet Zakariyyah]] < Bashwa < the children of Yahudha < Yaqub
  • Maryam and the wife of Zakariyyah were both from the family of Imran, making Jesus and him second cousins or close kin.
  • Was miraculously born to Zakariyyah in old age and was given wisdom, compassion, and purity as a child by Allah.
  • Was martyred by a corrupt ruler, Herod, after bravely forbidding his unlawful marriage with his niece or brother's wife, and his head was brought on a platter—honored as a prophet who stood for truth until death.

Allah praises Yahya

19:12 ˹Allah˺ said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement ˹while yet˺ a boy 13 And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah 14 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 15 And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.

Jesus

  • Lineage: [[Prophet Isa]] (Jesus) < Maryam < Imran < Mathan < the children of Yahudha < Yaqub
  • Born miraculously to Maryam without a father, by the command of Allah, and spoke as a baby to defend his mother and declare his prophethood.
  • Was given the Injil, performed miracles by Allah’s permission—like healing the blind, reviving the dead, and creating a bird from clay.
  • Was not crucified, but Allah ﷻ raised him up, and he will return before the Day of Judgment to restore justice and truth.

Jesus speaking as a baby and ordered to pray

  • Maryam withdrew to a remote place and gave birth to him alone under a palm tree, in great pain and sorrow.
  • Allah comforted her with a stream beneath her and made ripe dates fall for her to eat, telling her not to speak to anyone.
  • When she returned with the baby, her people accused her, but she pointed to him...

19:29 So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?" 30 ˹Jesus˺ said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. 31 And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive 32 And ˹made me˺ dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. 33 And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."

How the Jews and Christians pray

The nations abandoned the Salah

Follow the path of the prophets that were blessed

19:58 Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried ˹in the ship˺ with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.

Guide us to the path of those whom you blessed

1:6 Guide us to the straight path - 7 The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked ˹Your˺ anger or of those who are astray.

Those after them abandoned prayer

19:59 But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil - 60 Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.

The ones guided are those who humble their hearts after guidance comes to them

22:54 And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and ˹therefore˺ believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Dua of Ibrahim

2:128 Our Lord, and make us Muslims ˹in submission˺ to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation ˹in submission˺ to You.

14:40 My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and ˹many˺ from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication. 41 Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."

Hadith: The accepted dua of Ibrahim

From the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ they said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about yourself." He said, "The prayer of my father Ibrahim, the good news of Isa, and my mother saw when she carried me, that a light came out from her that illuminated the castles of Syria."

The Prophet ﷺ guides to the straight path

42:52 And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command. You did not know what is the Book or ˹what is˺ faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, ˹O Muhammad˺, you guide to a straight path - 53 The path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Unquestionably, to Allah do ˹all˺ matters evolve.
