nasai-kubra:2691Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Sufyān > ʿUbaydullāh > Ibn ʿAbbās Yasʾal > Ṣiyām Yawm ʿĀshūrāʾ

he heard Ibn 'Abbas, when he was asked about the fast of 'Ashura' say: "I do not know that the Prophet fasted any day because of its virtue, except this day" meaning the month of Ramadan and the day of Ashura.' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2370)

«مَا عَلِمْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَامَ يَوْمًا يَتَحَرَّى فَضْلَهُ عَلَى الْأَيَّامِ إِلَّا هَذَا الْيَوْمَ يَعْنِي شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ وَيَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ»

The people used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' before fasting in Ramadan was prescribed but when (the order of compulsory fasting in) Ramadan was revealed, it was up to one to fast on it (i.e. 'Ashura') or not.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of 'Ashura', and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day ('Ashura') or not.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered to observe fast (on 'Ashura) before the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. But when it became obligatory, then he who wished fasted on the day of Ashura, and he who wished did not observe it (on that day).

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ used to recommend fasting on the day of Ashura before the month of Ramadan was made obligatory. So when Ramadan was made obligatory, whoever wished fasted and whoever wished broke their fast.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan and once he stayed in Iʿtikaf till the night of the twenty-first and it was the night in the morning of which he used to come out of his Iʿtikaf. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should stay in Iʿtikaf for the last ten days, for I was informed (of the date) of the Night (of Qadr) but I have been caused to forget it. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water in the morning of that night. So, look for it in the last ten nights and in the odd ones of them." It rained that night and the roof of the mosque dribbled as it was made of leaf stalks of date-palms. I saw with my own eyes the mark of mud and water on the forehead of the Prophet (i.e. in the morning of the twenty-first).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend the middle ten days of Ramadan in retirement and devotion (i'tikaf) in the mosque. One year he had retirement and devotion in the mosque (as usual); when the twenty-first night came, and this night when he used to come out his devotion in the mosque, he said: He who has engaged himself in devotion along with me should do so during the last ten days; I saw that night, that was caused to forget it, but I have seen myself prostrating in water and mud on the morning following (that night), so seek it in the last ten days and seek it every night with an odd number. Abu sa'id said: Rain fell that night, the mosque that was thatched building dripped, and my eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the traces of water and mud, on his forehead on the morning following the twenty-first night.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn al- Hadi from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Harith at-Taymi from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman that Abu Said al-Khudri said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do itikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan. One year he was doing itikaf and then, when it came to the night of the twenty-first, which was the night before the morning when he would normally have finished his itikaf, he said, 'Whoever has done i'tikaf with me should continue doing itikaf for the last ten days. I saw a certain night and then I was made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating the following morning in water and clay. Look for it in the last ten days, and look for it on the odd days.' " Abu Said continued, "The sky poured with rain that night and the mosque had a roof (made of palm fronds) and the mosque was soaked. With my own eyes I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ leave with traces of water and clay on his forehead and nose, in the morning after the night of the twenty- first."

He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). One day while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with the people, a man came to him walking and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ. What is Belief?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Belief is to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Apostles, and the meeting with Him, and to believe in the Resurrection." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ What is Islam?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Islam is to worship Allah and not worship anything besides Him, to offer prayers perfectly, to pay the (compulsory) charity i.e. Zakat and to fast the month of Ramadan." The man again asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ What is Ihsan (i.e. perfection or Benevolence)?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not achieve this state of devotion, then (take it for granted that) Allah sees you." The man further asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ When will the Hour be established?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "The one who is asked about it does not know more than the questioner does, but I will describe to you its portents. When the lady slave gives birth to her mistress, that will be of its portents; when the bare-footed naked people become the chiefs of the people, that will be of its portents. The Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah. Verily, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs." (31.34) Then the man left. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Call him back to me." They went to call him back but could not see him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion." (See Hadith No. 47 Vol 1)

bukhari:50Musaddad > Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm > Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī > Abū Zurʿah > Abū Hurayrah

one day while the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in the company of some people, and ˹the angel˺ Gabriel came to him and said: What is Īmān (Faith)? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Faith is to (1) believe in Allah, (2) His angels, (3) meeting with Him, (4) His Messengers, and (5) to believe in Resurrection."

He (Gabriel) said: What is Islām? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "To (1) worship Allah and not to ascribe any partners to Him, (2) to establish Ṣalāh (Prayer), (3) to pay the compulsory charity (Zakāh), and (4) to fast during the month of Ramaḍān."

He (Gabriel) said: "What is Iḥsān (Excellence in Faith)?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "To (1) worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you are unable to see Him (i.e. achieve such as state) (2) ˹know˺ that He is watching you."

He (Gabriel) said: When is the Hour (the Last Day)? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its signs. (1) When a servant woman gives birth to her master, and (2) when the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of taller buildings, (3) ˹and it (the Hour) is one of five ˹things˺ which nobody knows except Allah." The Prophet ﷺ then recited: "Verily, with Allah (alone) is the knowledge of the Hour... (Luqmān 31:34)"

Then he (Gabriel) left and the Prophet ﷺ ˹asked his companions˺ to call him back, but they could not see him. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion."

"One day the Prophet ﷺ appeared among the people. A man came to him and said: 'O messenger of Allah, what is Iman (faith)?' He said: 'To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers and the meeting with, and to believe in the Final Resurrection.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?' He said: 'To worship Allah (alone) and not to associate anything with Him; to establish the prescribed prayers, to pay the obligatory Zakat, and to fast Ramadan.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Ihsan? He said: 'To worship Allah as if you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He sees you.' He said: "O Messenger of Allah, when will the Hour be?' He said: 'The one who is being asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking. But I will tell you about its signs. When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress that is one of its signs. When the shepherds compete in constructing tall buildings that is one of its signs. And there are five things which no one knows except Allah.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the Verse: "Verily, Allah, with Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things)."

Then Jibril ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, what is Islam?" He replied, "To worship Allah alone, without associating anything with Him, to establish the prayer, to give the obligatory charity, to fast during Ramadan, and to perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (Kaaba)." Jibril said, "If you do that, then you are a Muslim." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have spoken the truth." Jibril asked, "What is Ihsan (excellence or perfection)?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, know that He sees you." Jibril said, "If you do that, then you are a Muhsin (a person of excellence)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have spoken the truth." Jibril asked, "What is Iman (faith)?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Day of Resurrection, and to believe in predestination, the good of it and the bad of it." Jibril said, "If you do that, then you are a Mu'min (a believer)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have spoken the truth."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was once prominent among the people when a man came to him walking and said, "O Muhammad, what is faith?" He said, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His messengers, and the Day of Judgement, and to believe in the resurrection after death." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He said, "To worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him, to establish the obligatory prayers, to pay the obligatory charity, and to fast during the month of Ramadan." The man then asked, "O Muhammad, what is excellence (ihsan)?" He said, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you." Finally, the man asked, "O Muhammad, when will the Hour (the Day of Judgement) occur?" He replied, "The one being asked about it knows no more than the questioner, but I will inform you of its signs. When the servant girl gives birth to her master, and you see the barefooted, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings, that is among its signs. The knowledge of the Hour belongs only to Allah {Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour} [Quran 31:34]." Then the man left, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "That was Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion."

I said (to him), "Fasting had been observed (on such a day) before (the order of compulsory fasting in) Ramadan was revealed.
