[Machine] And he said to her, "Who is this who was with you?" She said, "I had no one with me, and I did not notice until you pointed it out to me." He said, "May Allah protect your family, and people have been talking about it." Her father said to her, "O my daughter, the people have spoken a lot about you, so tell me your story. If the man is truthful, you have committed a great sin, and if he is lying, I will take him to some of the prophets of Yemen and swear to him what they used to swear by, that he is lying on you." The man said to the fruit seller, "Hey you, you have implicated my daughter in a grave matter. Take me to some of the prophets of Yemen, and Uthbah will go in a group of the sons of Abdi Manaf, and the fruit seller will go in a group of the sons of Makhzum, and Hind will go with them along with some women. When they approach the land, they will say, 'We will return to the priest.'" Hind's appearance changed and her face transformed. So her father said to her, "I can see the change in your appearance, and it is not something you desire. Why did this not happen before the people witnessed our journey?" She said, "No, by Allah, O my father. It is not something I desired, but I know that you bring people who make mistakes and cause harm, and I do not trust that they will not give me a derogatory nickname among the Arabs." He said, "I will test him before I look into your matter." He gave a whistle with his horse until it reached far, then he took a piece of barley and put it in his saddlebag and rode over it. In the morning, he was kind to them and slaughtered for them. When they sat down, Uthbah said to him, "We have come to you regarding a matter, and I have kept something hidden for you to test you. So, see what it is." He said, "A leopard in a box." He said, "I wanted something more clear than this." He said, "A piece of barley in a bridal dowry." He said, "You spoke the truth. Look into the matter of these women." He approached one of them, hit her shoulder, and said, "Get up until he approached Hind and hit her shoulder and said, 'My nation, not an adulteress, nor a fornicator. Give birth to a boy named Mu'awiyah.'" So the fruit seller got up and took her hand, and her hand slipped from his hand. She said to him, "By Allah, I am more eager for this to be done by someone other than you." So Abu Sufyan married her, and she gave birth to Mu'awiyah.

that he remembered Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he also remembered a mouthful of water which he had thrown on his face, after taking it from a well that was in their house. Mahmud said that he had heard ʿItban bin Malik, who was present with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle of Badr saying, "I used to lead my people at Bani Salim in the prayer and there was a valley between me and those people. Whenever it rained it used to be difficult for me to cross it to go to their mosque. So I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'I have weak eyesight and the valley between me and my people flows during the rainy season and it becomes difficult for me to cross it; I wish you would come to my house and pray at a place so that I could take that place as a praying place.' Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I will do so.' So Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr came to my house in the (next) morning after the sun had risen high. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked my permission to let him in and I admitted him. He did not sit before saying, 'Where do you want us to offer the prayer in your house?' I pointed to the place where I wanted him to pray. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for the prayer and started the prayer with Takbir and we aligned in rows behind him; and he offered two rakʿat, and finished them with Taslim, and we also performed Taslim with him. I detained him for a meal called "Khazir" which I had prepared for him.--("Khazir" is a special type of dish prepared from barley flour and meat soup)-- When the neighbors got the news that Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in my house, they poured it till there were a great number of men in the house. One of them said, 'What is wrong with Malik, for I do not see him?' One of them replied, 'He is a hypocrite and does not love Allah and His Apostle.' On that Allah's Apostle said, 'Don't say this. Haven't you seen that he said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah for Allah's sake only.' The man replied, 'Allah and His Apostle know better; but by Allah, we never saw him but helping and talking with the hypocrites.' Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'No doubt, whoever says. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and by that he wants the pleasures of Allah, then Allah will save him from Hell." Mahmud added, "I told the above narration to some people, one of whom was Abu Aiyub, the companion of Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle in which he (Abu Aiyub) died and Yazid bin Mu'awiya was their leader in Roman Territory. Abu Aiyub denounced the narration and said, 'I doubt that Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever said what you have said.' I felt that too much, and I vowed to Allah that if I remained alive in that holy battle, I would (go to Medina and) ask ʿItban bin Malik if he was still living in the mosque of his people. So when he returned, I assumed Ihram for Hajj or ʿUmra and then I proceeded on till I reached Medina. I went to Bani Salim and ʿItban bin Malik, who was by then an old blind man, was leading his people in the prayer. When he finished the prayer, I greeted him and introduced myself to him and then asked him about that narration. He told that narration again in the same manner as he had narrated it the first time."

muslim:1763Hannād b. al-Sarī > Ibn al-Mubārak > ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār

When it was the day on which the Battle of Badr was fought, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast a glance at the infidels, and they were one thousand while his own Companions were three hundred and nineteen. The Prophet ﷺ turned (his face) towards the Qibla. Then he stretched his hands and began his supplication to his Lord: "O Allah, accomplish for me what Thou hast promised to me. O Allah, bring about what Thou hast promised to me. O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed. Thou will not be worshipped on this earth." He continued his supplication to his Lord, stretching his hands, facing the Qibla, until his mantle slipped down from his shoulders. So Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his mantle and put it on his shoulders. Then he embraced him from behind and said: Prophet of Allah, this prayer of yours to your Lord will suffice you, and He will fulfill for you what He has promised you. So Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, revealed (the Qur'anic verse): "When ye appealed to your Lord for help, He responded to your call (saying): I will help you with one thousand angels coming in succession." So Allah helped him with angels. Abu Zumail said that the hadith was narrated to him by Ibn ʿAbbas who said: While on that day a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever who was going ahead of him, he heard over him the swishing of the whip and the voice of the rider saying: Go ahead, Haizum! He glanced at the polytheist who had (now) fallen down on his back. When he looked at him (carefully he found that) there was a scar on his nose and his face was torn as if it had been lashed with a whip, and had turned green with its poison. An Ansari came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and related this (event) to him. He said: You have told the truth. This was the help from the third heaven. The Muslims that day (i.e. the day of the Battle of Badr) killed seventy persons and captured seventy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and ʿUmar (Allah be pleased with them): What is your opinion about these captives? Abu Bakr said: They are our kith and kin. I think you should release them after getting from them a ransom. This will be a source of strength to us against the infidels. It is quite possible that Allah may guide them to Islam. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What is your opinion, Ibn Khattab? He said: Messenger of Allah, I do not hold the same opinion as Abu Bakr. I am of the opinion that you should hand them over to us so that we may cut off their heads. Hand over ʿAqil to ʿAli that he may cut off his head, and hand over such and such relative to me that I may cut off his head. They are leaders of the disbelievers and veterans among them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved the opinion of Abu Bakr and did not approve what I said. The next day when I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I found that both he and Abu Bakr were sitting shedding tears. I said: Messenger of Allah, why are you and your Companion shedding tears? Tell me the reason. For I will weep, or I will at least pretend to weep in sympathy with you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I weep for what has happened to your companions for taking ransom (from the prisoners). I was shown the torture to which they were subjected. It was brought to me as close as this tree. (He pointed to a tree close to him.) Then God revealed the verse: "It is not befitting for a prophet that he should take prisoners until the force of the disbelievers has been crushed..." to the end of the verse: "so eat ye the spoils of war, (it is) lawful and pure. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out in the year of al-Hudaibbiyyah with over ten hundreds of Companions and when he came to Dhu al Hulaifah. He garlanded and marked the sacrificial animals, and entered the sacred state of Umrah. He then went on with the tradition. The Prophet moved on and when he came to the mountain, pass by which one descends (to Mecca) to them, his riding-beast knelt down, and the people said twice: Go on, go on, al-Qaswa has become jaded. The Prophet (May peace be upon him) said: She has not become jaded and that is not a characteristic of hers, but He Who restrained the elephant has restrained her. He then said: By Him in Whose hand my soul is, they will not ask any me good thing by which they honor which God has made sacred without my giving them it. He then urged her and she leaped up and he turned aside from them, and stopped at the farthest side of al-Hudaibiyyah at a pool with little water. Meanwhile Budail bin Warqa al-Khuza’I came, and ‘Urwah bin Mas’ud joined him. He began to speak to the Prophet ﷺ. Whenever he spoke to the Prophet ﷺ, he caught his beard. Al Mughriah bin Shu’bah was standing beside the Prophet ﷺ.He had a sword with him, wearing a helmet. He (Al Mughriah) struck his (‘Urwah’s) hand with the lower end of his sheath, and said: Keep away your hand from his beard. ‘Urwah then raised his hand and asked: Who is this? They replied: Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah. He said: O treacherous one! Did I not use my offices in your treachery? In pre-Islamic days Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah accompanied some people and murdered them, and took their property. He then came (to the Prophet) and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: As for Islam we accepted it, but as to the property, as it has been taken by treachery, we have no need of it. He went on with the tradition the Prophet ﷺ said: Write down: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has decided. He then narrated the tradition. Suhail then said: And that a man will not come to you from us, even if he follows your religion, without you sending him back to us. When he finished drawing up the document, the Prophet ﷺ said to his Companions: Get up and sacrifice and then shave. Thereafter some believing women who were immigrants came. (Allah sent down: O yea who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants). Allah most high forbade them to send them back, but ordered them to restore the dower. He then returned to Medina. Abu Basir a man from the Quraish (who was a Muslim), came to him. And they sent (two men) to look for him; so he handed him over to the two men. They took him away, and when they reached Dhu Al Hulaifah and alighted to eat some dates which they had, Abu Basir said to one of the men : I swear by Allah so-and-so, that I think this sword of yours is a fine one; the other drew the sword and said : Yes I have tried it. Abu Basir said: Let me look at it. He let him have it and he struck him till he died, whereupon the other fled and came to Medina, and running entered the mosque. The Prophet ( may peace be upon him) said: This man has seen something frightful. He said: I swear by Allah that my Companion has been killed, and im as good as dead. Abu Basir then arrived and said: Allah has fulfilled your covenant. You returned me to them, but Allah saved me from them. The Prophet ﷺ said: Woe to his mother, stirrer up of war! Would that he had someone (i.e. some kinsfolk). When he heard that he knew that he would send him back to them, so he went out and came to the seashore. Abu Jandal escaped and joined Abu Basir till a band of them collected.

ahmad:23882Yaʿqūb from my father > ʿAbdullāh b. Jaʿfar > ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Abū ʿAwn > Jaddatihiʿan Ibn Abū Ḥadrad al-Aslamī > Dhakar

[Machine] He married a woman and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his assistance in paying her dowry. He asked, "How much did you give as dowry?" He replied, "I gave two hundred dirhams." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you were to collect dirhams from your valley, you would not increase what I have nor would I give you anymore." He said, "So I stayed for a while, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and sent me on an expedition to Najd. He said, 'Go on this expedition, perhaps you will achieve something.' So I set off with the army until we reached a place called Mumsin. When the evening came, our leader sent two men and said, 'When I make takbeer and start carrying, make takbeer and start carrying as well.' And he said, 'When we send two men, do not separate and I will ask one of you about the news of his companion, but I do not find him with him, and do not focus too much on searching.' So when we wanted to carry, I heard a man from Mumsin shout, 'O Khadrah!' So I became hopeful that we were going to get something from them. When we stood for takbeer, our leader carried and we carried as well. Then a man passed by me holding a sword, so I followed him. My companion said to me, 'Our leader has entrusted us not to focus too much on searching, so go back.' But I did not see anything but to follow him. He said, 'By Allah, you will go back or I will go back to him and tell him that you refused.' So I said, 'By Allah, I will follow him.' So I followed him until I came close to him and shot an arrow at him and it struck him on the chest and he fell. He said, 'Come, O Muslim, to Paradise!' When he saw that I did not approach him, I shot another arrow at him and it hit him, so he drew his sword and attacked me, but I took the sword from him and killed him. I cut off his head and we collected many spoils. Then we returned. When I woke up, I saw my camel tied to it another camel, on which there was a beautiful young woman. She would look back and say takbeer, so I asked her, 'Where are you looking?' She said, 'To a man, and by Allah, if he is alive, he will join you.' I said, 'And I thought it was my companion whom I killed. By Allah, I killed him, and this is his sword, hanging from the saddle of the camel I am on.' He said, 'And the scabbard of the sword has nothing hanging from the saddle of her camel.' So when I told her this, she said, 'Place this scabbard beneath it and smell it, if you are telling the truth.' He said, 'So I took it and smelled it, and then she cried.' [Machine] "Do not be intimidated by them, for they will return. So We revealed (to Ali) and when it was morning, one who looked like me (Ali) went out, and when he went out, I reminded him (the people) of that incident. Ali said, 'Do not be scared by their presence, for their command is insignificant.' Ali said, 'Do not initiate the fight with them until they initiate it with you.' They sat on their knees and we prepared for battle, and we used our shields as protection. They approached us and handed us spears, and then they attacked us with arrows. Then they got closer and they picked up swords to attack us until they wanted to attack us with their swords. Then, a man from the Banu Abdi Qays tribe named Sa'sa'a bin Sohan called out three times and they asked him what he wanted. He said, 'I remind you to have God in your hearts and to fight on the land that will bear disrespect against its people. I remind you to leave behind the religion, as it will leave you behind like an arrow from a bow.' When we saw that they had placed their swords on us, Ali said, 'Get up, with the blessing of Allah the Almighty.' It was not even midday when we were scattered everywhere and we escaped, and whoever ran, ran. Ali thanked Allah and said, 'My friend (the Prophet) informed me that the leader of the enemy was a man whose hands were marked with hair, like the tail of a lizard. Go and find him.' So we looked for him and we could not find him. Then, an man from the people of Kufa came and said, 'Here he is.' Ali said, 'Allah is the Greatest, by Allah, no one will inform you about his father's lineage being the King.' People started saying, 'This is a King.' Ali said, 'Whose son is he?' They said, 'We do not know.' Then, a man from the people of Kufa came and said, 'I know this man. I was offering cattle as a dowry for a certain man from Banu Fulan, a sheikh from Banu Fulan, and I put easy-to-wear ornaments on them. When I turned my back, the cow ran away, and he called me and said, 'Oh boy, look, the cow has run away.' So I said, 'I see an image of a sunset or a sheep.' He got closer to us, and Ali said, 'Who is that man?' The people said, 'This is the one.' Ali said, 'I swear by Allah, this man has come to you from Yamama to worship Allah in the mosque of Kufa. He worshipped Allah there and called the people until they gathered around him.' Ali said, 'My friend (the Prophet) informed me that these are three brothers from the Jinn. This is the eldest, the second has a large following, and the third one is weak.' Muslim narrated this hadith in Sahih al-Masnad in an abbreviated manner, and it is an authentic hadith."

[Machine] "Do you know the story of Ayyub (Job)? I said, what is the story of Ayyub? He said, there was a village where there were people from the Jews, so Allah forbade them from hunting whales on the Sabbath. Their whales used to come to them on their Sabbath, appearing white like pregnant women. But on days other than the Sabbath, they could not find them nor catch them except with great difficulty and hardship. So some of them said to others, or someone said among them, "If we take them on a day other than the Sabbath and eat them, let us do it." So a household among them did that. They took the whales and ate them, and then they roasted them. Their neighbors smelled the roasting and said, "By Allah, we do not see anything of the people of so-and-so." Others among them took more of the whales until this behavior spread among them and became widespread. They eventually separated into three groups: one that ate, one that forbade, and one that asked, 'Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' [Quran 7:164]. The group that forbade said, 'We warn you of Allah's anger and punishment that may hit you with sinking or stoning or some of the punishments that He has.' And by Allah, we do not hide anything from you while you are present.' They then left the city and stayed away until the next day, then they came and knocked on the door of the city, but no one answered them. So they brought a ladder and leaned it against the wall, and one from among them climbed over it. He called out, 'O servants of Allah, due to their sins, they were transformed into monkeys, with tails.' They knew their lineages were from human beings, while the human beings did not know that their lineage had become that of monkeys. The person would sniff at his male relative, sticking to him, and the human being would say to him, 'Are you so and so?' The monkey would point to his head, meaning yes, and would weep. The female monkey would go to her male relative, sticking to him, and the human being would say to her, 'Are you so-and-so?' She would point to her head, meaning yes, and would weep. The human beings then said to each other, 'Indeed, we warned you of Allah's punishment, that He would strike you with a crumbling or a transformation or some of the punishment that He has.' Ibn Abbas said, 'I do not know what the third group did.' Ibn Abbas also said, 'How many times have we seen an evil action and we did not forbid it?' Ikrimah said, 'I then said, what do you see that Allah made me do?' They had denied and disliked what they said when they asked, 'Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' So my statement amazed them, and Allah ordered me to wear two heavy coats, so they covered me with them."

ذِكْرُ إِخْبَارِ الْمُصْطَفَى ﷺ عَنْ مَوْتِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

ibnhibban:6671Abū Khalīfah > ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī > Yaḥyá b. Sulaym > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUthmān b. Khuthaym > Mujāhid > Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar from his father > Um Dhar > Lammā Ḥaḍarat Abū Dhar al-Wafāh Bakayt

[Machine] When Aba Dhar was approaching death, I cried. He asked me, "What makes you cry?" I said, "Why shouldn't I cry when you are about to die on a patch of land? I don't have a shroud big enough to cover you, nor do I have hands to bury you." He said, "Rejoice and do not cry, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No two Muslim parents lose two children or more and show patience and seek reward, except that they will see Paradise forever.' And I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people that I am among them, 'One of you will die on a patch of land witnessed by a group of believers.' None of those people left except that they died in a village and community, except for me. By Allah, I am not lying. So, look for the way." I said, "How can I find the way when the pilgrims have already left and the roads are cut off?" He said, "Go and look for it." So, I sought it with great difficulty until I reached a sandy area, then I returned and made him sick. While he was in that condition, suddenly I saw men on their camels as if they were specks of sand in the wind. I said, "Hurry up and come to me!" When they stood in front of me, they said, "O servant of Allah, what is wrong with you?" I said, "A Muslim man has died, so won't you shroud him?" They asked, "Who is he?" I said, "Abu Dhar." They said, "The companion of the Messenger of Allah?" I said, "Yes." So, they sacrificed their fathers and mothers for him and hurried towards him until they entered upon him. He said to them, "Rejoice, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people that I am among them, 'One of you will die on a patch of land witnessed by a group of believers.' None of those people died except in a group." I swear by Allah that I did not lie and he did not lie. If I had a shroud that would fit either me or my wife, I would not have shrouded him except in that shroud. I implore you by Allah that no one among you, whether a leader, a dignitary, a messenger, or a captain, shrouds me. None of those people died except that they committed some of what he (the Prophet) mentioned, except for one young boy from the Ansar. He said, "I will shroud you, O uncle. I will shroud you in my garment and in two robes from my mother's yarn." He said, "You, then shroud me." So, the Ansari among the group who were present and stood over him shrouded him and buried him in a group, all of whom were from Yemen.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with the pilgrims in their dwellings for ten years during the seasons of Mijannah, 'Ukaz, and their dwellings in Mina. He asked, "Who will provide refuge and support me until I deliver the messages of my Lord? For him is Paradise." However, he did not find anyone who would provide refuge and support him, until a man from Makkah or Yemen would enter his companion's dwelling, and his people or relatives would warn him, saying, "Beware of this young man from Quraysh, he will harm you. He walks among your bags and invites you to Allah, pointing at him with his finger." Then Allah sent a man from Yathrib who believed in him and recited the Quran to him. He returned to his people and they embraced Islam until there was no house left in Yathrib except that it had a group of Muslims who openly declared their faith. Then Allah sent for him and we met and gathered seventy of us and said, "How long will the Messenger of Allah be driven away in the mountains of Makkah and fear? So we traveled until we reached him during the season. We made an appointment with the people of 'Aqabah and gathered there one man, then two men, until we met him there. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, why should we pledge allegiance to you?" He replied, "Pledge allegiance to me in hearing and obedience, in times of ease and difficulty, in hardship and ease, in commanding the good and forbidding the evil, and that you will not blame me for the sake of Allah, regardless of what happens. And that you will support me if I come to you in Yathrib and will protect me from that which you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children. And for you is Paradise." So we said, "We pledge allegiance to you." He took the hand of As'ad bin Zurarah, the youngest of the seventy men except me, and said, "O people of Yathrib, we have not struck the liver of a camel except that we knew that he is the Messenger of Allah and that his leaving today means the separation of all the Arabs and the killing of your best men. And the swords will bite you. But as for you, you are a people who can bear the biting of swords, the killing of your best men, and the separation of all the Arabs. Take him, and your reward is with Allah. But as for you, you fear for yourselves and hesitate, so leave him. He is the most careful for your sake in the sight of Allah." So they said, "Hold your hand, O As'ad bin Zurarah. By Allah, we will not abandon this pledge nor will we resign from it." So we stood up and approached him, one by one, agreeing to his conditions and receiving the promise of Paradise in return.

[Machine] Abu Abdurrahman, I heard him saying that Ali said: Hattab ibn Abi Balta'ah wrote to Mecca, saying: "Indeed, Muhammad intends to attack you with his companions, so be cautious." He sent his letter to a woman known as Sara, who placed it in her garment or in one of its folds, and then she set off. Allah informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. Ali said: "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with Zubair ibn Al-Awam and Abu Marthad Al-Ghanawi, and all of us were horsemen. He said: Set out, as you will meet her in Rawdah, such and such, so search her, as she carries a letter to the people of Mecca from Hattab." So we set out and met her. We said: Hand over the letter you have to the people of Mecca. She replied: I don't have any letter with me. I said: By Allah, neither did I lie nor forge it. Either she would produce it or I would strip her. When she knew that I was serious, she brought out the letter. So we took it and set off with it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who opened it and read it. It contained the letter of Hattab to the people of Mecca saying: "After this, Muhammad intends to attack you, so be cautious and prepared." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished reading the letter, he sent for Hattab and asked him: "Did you write this letter?" He replied: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: "What prompted you to do so?" He said: "By Allah, I have never disbelieved since I embraced Islam. I believe in Allah and His Messenger. I only did this because there is no one among your companions in Mecca who protects his family and property, while I have no one there who protects my family and property, so I wanted to have someone to rely on among the people. Indeed, I know that Allah will support His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ believed him and accepted his statement. Umar ibn Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) got up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Let me kill him, for he has betrayed Allah and the believers." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: "O Umar! He is from the people of Badr, and who knows, perhaps Allah has looked at them and said: 'Do as you like, for I have forgiven you."

[Machine] It is reported that the Ansar went against us and gathered with their families in the Saqifah of Bani Sa'ida. Ali and Zubair also went against us and those who were with them. The Muhajireen gathered with Abu Bakr. So I said to Abu Bakr, "O Abu Bakr, come with us to our brothers from the Ansar." So we departed with the intention of meeting them. When we approached them, we met two righteous men from among them. They mentioned what the people had been saying about them. We told them that we wanted our brothers from the Ansar. They said to us, "It is not upon you to come near them. Deal with your own affairs." So I said, "By Allah, we will approach them." So we went until we reached them in the Saqifah of Bani Sa'ida. There, we saw a man wrapped in a garment between them. I asked, "Who is this?" They said, "This is Sa'ad bin Ubadah." I asked, "What is wrong with him?" They said, "He is sick." When we sat for a while, their speaker praised Allah and then mentioned their status. He said, "We are the Ansar of Allah and the battalion of Islam, and you are the Muhajireen. We are a group from us and there is a remnant from your people who have opposed us, trying to diminish our status and take the authority from us." Then when he remained silent, I intended to speak and I had prepared a speech that I found impressive, which I wanted to present to Abu Bakr. I even faked my speech in front of him, but I avoided mentioning the matter. Then Abu Bakr said, "Speak upon your mission." I hated that he said that and I feared becoming angry and that he would speak before me. Abu Bakr was more patient and respectful. By Allah, he did not leave any word that I found impressive in my false speech except that he said something similar or better than it. Until he remained silent. I said, "You have mentioned nothing but good, and you are deserving of it. We would not have known of this matter if it were not for this noble person from the Quraysh, who are the middle of the Arabs in lineage, wealth, and status. I am pleased with one of these two men, so pledge to either of them as you wish." I extended my hand, and Abu Bakr extended his hand, as did Abu Ubaydah bin Jarrah, who was sitting between us. I would not have disliked anything he said except that it was not in favor of me, apart from this, by Allah, even if he had slapped my neck, I would not have been closer to committing a sin than I am now. I prefer it to commanding a people in whom Abu Bakr is not their leader, O Allah, unless you make my soul understand at the time of my death something that I do not understand now." Then a speaker among the Ansar said, "I am their representative, Al-Muhakkak, and their spokesperson, Al-Murajjab. From us is an Amir and from you is an Amir, O people of Quraish." The noise increased and the voices raised until I feared disagreement. So I said, "Extend your hand, O Abu Bakr." So Abu Bakr extended his hand and I pledged allegiance to him. The Muhajireen pledged allegiance to him, and then the Ansar pledged allegiance to him.

bayhaqi:13441al-Shāfiʿī > Ibn ʿUyaynah > Abū al-Naḍr > ʿUbaydullāh b. Abū Rāfiʿ from his father

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , said, "I do not become comfortable knowing that one of you is reclining on his couch while the command of what I have commanded or the prohibition of what I have forbidden comes to him, and he says, 'I do not know what we found in the Book of Allah so we followed it.' Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said that Allah has commanded to follow what He has commanded and avoid what He has forbidden, and Allah has obliged this in His book for His creation. And what is in the hands of people other than this is only what they hold onto from Allah, then from the Prophet, may ﷺ , then from his evidence. However, his saying, 'If he said it, the people should not hold onto anything from me or other than me,' implies that when the Prophet, may ﷺ , was in a position of leadership, he had privileges that were permissible for him but not permissible for the people. So he said, 'The people should not hold onto anything from me that is exclusive to me or different from what they have. But if it is what is on me specifically and not on them, then they should not hold onto it.' This is like Allah allowing him, may His praise be exalted, to have as many wives as He wills and to divorce a woman if she presents herself to him, and Allah, the Exalted, said: 'A privilege for you [alone], not for the [rest of the] believers.' So no one could say that the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , combined more than four women or married a woman without a dowry or took a fifth of the spoils, because that would not be allowed for the believers before him or after him or for their offspring. Allah has made it clear in His book and on the tongue of His Messenger, may ﷺ , that this is specific to him, and Allah has obliged that He give his wives the choice to stay with him or leave. So no one can say that I have the choice to make my wife do what Allah has obliged on His Messenger, may ﷺ . This is the meaning of the Prophet's saying, 'If he said it, the people should not hold onto anything from me.' The Shaykh clarified that al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, only sought the authenticity of the narration, so he said, 'If he said it,' because the hadith is mursal and there is nothing that confirms it except that it coincides with what al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, making it clear and consistent with the principles."

[Machine] There were some Jews who were forbidden by Allah from capturing whales on the Sabbath. Their whales would come to them on their Sabbath, prepared like eggplants with fins, resembling the shape and appearance of their offspring. But on days other than the Sabbath, they would not find any whales unless they exerted great effort and struggled to catch them. So some of them said to each other, or someone among them said, "If we take them on a day other than the Sabbath and eat them, let us do it." So a certain group from among them did so, and they took and ate them. Then their neighbors noticed the smell of cooking from the whales and said, "By Allah, we do not see that the family of so-and-so has experienced anything." So others among them also took and ate them, until this became widespread among them and prevalent. They split into three groups: one group that would eat, one group that would forbid, and one group that would say, "Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?" (Al-A'raf 164). The group that forbade said, "Indeed, we warn you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." But we will not reveal our secrets to you when you are in this place." So they went out of the city and stayed there overnight. They returned the next day and knocked on the city gate, but no one answered them. So they brought a ladder and leaned it against the city gate. Then one of them climbed atop the gate and said, "O servants of Allah, it is a group of monkeys, and by Allah, they have tails." Then he came down from the gate, and they opened the gate and the people entered. The monkeys realized that they were descended from humans, but the humans did not realize that they were descended from monkeys. A human would come to his relative or close one among the monkeys, touch him, cling to him, and say, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" The monkey would nod his head, meaning "yes," and the human would cry. The monkey would go to his relative or close one among the humans, and the human would say to her, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" She would nod her head, meaning "yes," and she would cry. Then the humans said to them, "Indeed, we warned you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." Ibn 'Abbas said, "Then Allah said, 'So We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized those who did wrong with a severe punishment because of their disobedience.' (Al-A'raf 165). So I do not know what happened to the third group." Ibn 'Abbas said, "How many times have we seen something forbidden and not prevented it?" 'Ikrimah said, "So I said, 'Do you not see that Allah has made me your intercessor, that they have denied and disliked when they said, 'Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' (Al-A'raf 164).' He was pleased with my words and ordered two heavy coats for me, and I wore them."
