حَبِيبَةُ بِنْتُ سَهْلٍ امْرَأَةُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ

tabarani:21034 – ʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal from my father > ʿAbd al-Quddūs b. Bakr b. Khunays > Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh > ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb from his father > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr And al-Ḥajjāj > Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. Abū Ḥathmah from his uncle Sahl b. Abū Ḥathmah

[Machine] Habiba bint Sahl was married to Thabit bin Qais bin Shammah al-Ansari. She disliked him, and he was a brave man. She went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot stand him, and if it were not for the fear of Allah, I would spit in his face." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her if she would return to him the garden that he had given her as a dowry. She said yes, so he sent for him and she returned the garden to him, and they separated. This was the first divorce in Islam.  

الطبراني:٢١٠٣٤ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنِ بَكْرِ بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَالْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ قَالَ

كَانَتْ حَبِيبَةُ بِنْتُ سَهْلٍ تَحْتَ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ فَكَرِهَتْهُ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا دَمِيمًا فَجَاءَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَرَاهُ وَلَوْلَا مَخَافَةُ اللهِ لَبَزَقْتُ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَرُدِّينَ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيقَتَهُ الَّتِي أَصْدَقَكِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَرَدَّتْ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيقَتَهُ وَفَرَّقَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ أَوَّلُ خَلَعٍ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ

[Machine] Habiba, the daughter of Sahl bin Qais bin Shammas Al-Ansariyya, disliked her husband. He was a man of strong character. She went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot stand him. If it were not for the fear of Allah, I would spit in his face." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Would you return to him the garden that he gave you as dowry?" She said, "Yes." So he sent for him and she returned the garden to him, and they were separated. This was the first case of divorce in Islam.
