17. Book of Just War (Jihād) (2/5)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The first three people to enter the Fire on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who has been brought and it will be said to him: 'Did you not know the Book of Allah and recite it day and night, seeking its reward?' He will say: 'Yes, my Lord.' Then it will be said to him: 'You have lied, for you only wanted to be called a reader of the Quran, and that had already been said about you.' Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face into the Fire. Then the second will be brought and it will be said to him: 'Did you not have wealth and trade with it, and were you not generous and gave charity?' He will say: 'Yes, my Lord.' Then it will be said to him: 'You have lied, for you only wanted to be called generous, and that had already been said about you.' Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face into the Fire. Then the third will be brought and it will be said to him: 'Did you not go out for Jihad in the cause of Allah?' He will say: 'Yes, my Lord.' Then it will be said to him: 'You have lied, for you only wanted to be called brave, and that had already been said about you.' Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face into the Fire."
Messenger of Allah, tell me about jihad and fighting. He replied: Abdullah ibn Amr, if you fight with endurance seeking from Allah your reward, Allah will resurrect you showing endurance and seeking your reward from Him, but, if you fight for vain show seeking to acquire much, Allah will resurrect you making a vain show and seeking to acquire much. In whatever you fight or are killed, Abdullah ibn Amr, in that state Allah will resurrect you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2519)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced an expedition, and I was a very old man and I had no servant. I, therefore, sought a hireling who would serve instead of me, and I would give him his portion. So I found a man. When the time of departure arrived, he came to me and said: I do not know what would be the portions, and how much would be my portion. So offer something (as wages) to me, whether there would be any portion or not. I offered three dinars (as his wages) for him. When some booty arrived, I wanted to offer him his portion. But I remembered the dinars, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned the matter to him. He said: All I can find for him regarding this expedition of his in this world and the next is three dinars which were offered him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2527)
The Prophet ﷺ said: Our Lord Most High is pleased with a man who fights in the path of Allah, the Exalted; then his companions fled away (i.e. retreated). But he knew that it was a sin (to flee away from the battlefield), so he returned, and his blood was shed. Thereupon Allah, the Exalted, says to His angels: Look at My servant; he returned seeking what I have for him (i.e. the reward), and fearing (the punishment) I have, until his blood was shed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2536)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "There are three whom Allah (SWT) loves: A man who comes to some people and asks (to be given something) for the sake of Allah and not for the sake of their relationship, but they do not give him, so a man stayed behind and gave it to him in secret, and no one knew of his giving except Allah (SWT) and the one to whom he gave it. People who travel all night until sleep becomes dearer to them than anything equated with it, so they lay down their heads (and slept), then a man among them got up and started praying to Me and beseeching Me, reciting My Verses. And a man who was on a campaign and met the enemy and they fled, but he went forward (pursuing them) until he was killed or victory was granted." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1615)
Amr ibn Uqaysh had given usurious loans in pre-Islamic period; so he disliked to embrace Islam until he took them. He came on the day of Uhud and asked: Where are my cousins? They (the people) replied: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He then put on his coat of mail and rode his horse; he then proceeded towards them. When the Muslims saw him, they said: Keep away, Amir. He said: I have become a believer. He fought until he was wounded. He was then taken to his family wounded. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh came to his sister: Ask him (whether he fought) out of partisanship, out of anger for them, or out of anger for Allah. He said: Out of anger of Allah and His Apostle. He then died and entered Paradise. He did not offer any prayer for Allah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2537)
The Prophet ﷺ said: Two (prayers) are not rejected, or seldom rejected: Prayer at the time of the call to prayer, and (the prayer) at the time of fighting, when the people grapple with each other. Musa said: Rizq ibn Sa'id ibn AbdurRahman reported from AbuHazim on the authority of Sahl ibn Sa'd from the Prophet ﷺ as saying: And while it is raining. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2540)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should use the saddle, for indeed, the earth folds at night." I found in the book of rituals that I had dictated from this book a narration from Ruwaim ibn Yazid al-Muqri, from Al-Layth, from Aqil, from Az-Zuhri, from Anas. I made an effort at that time to find a witness for it but I did not find one. "And this is his witness, if it is confirmed by Khalid ibn Yazid al-Umari." If it is confirmed by Khalid, then it is reliable.
“Whoever enters a horse (in a race) between two other horses, not knowing whether it will win, that is not gambling. But whoever enters a horse (in race) between two other horses, certain that it will win, that is gambling.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2876)
This tradition has also been narrated on the authority of ‘A’ishah through a different chain. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 99)
Ibn Juraij said “O ye who believe, Obey Allaah and obey the Apostle and those charged with authority amongst you.” This verse was revealed about ‘Abd Allaah bin Qais bin ‘Adi whom the Prophet ﷺ sent along with a detachment. Ya’la narrated it to me from Sa’id bin Jubair on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2624)
The Prophet ﷺ sent a detachment. I gave a sword to a man from among them. When he came back, he said: Would that you saw us how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rebuked us, saying: When I sent out a man who does not fulfil my command, are you unable to appoint in his place one who will fulfil my command. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2627)
When the people encamped, (the narrator Amr ibn Uthman al-Himsi) said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped, the people scattered in the glens and wadis. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Your scattering in these glens and wadis is only of the devil. They afterwards kept close together when they encamped to such an extent that it used to be said that if a cloth were spread over them, it would cover them all. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2628)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to lag behind during marches to accommodate the weak, and he repeated and prayed for them. This is a Sahih (authentic) report according to the condition of Muslim, and it has not been excluded according to the condition of Muslim.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to kill him: he was a spy of AbuSufyan and an ally of a man of the Ansar. He passed a circle of the Ansar and said: I am a Muslim. A man from the Ansar said, Messenger of Allah, he is saying that he is a Muslim. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There are people among you in whose faith we trust. Furat ibn Hayyan is one of them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2652)
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, disliked shouting while fighting. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2656)
[Machine] "This is an authentic narration according to the condition set by the two Sheikhs. They did not exclude it. The narration of Hisham Al-Dastuwa'i provides evidence for it, and it is more reliable."
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ encountered the polytheists on the day of Hunayn, he dismounted from his camel. This narration is authentic according to the conditions set by both scholars (al-Bukhari and Muslim). They did not dispute it, and it is not valid to say that he ﷺ dismounted and fought a man except for this incident, as mentioned by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
I was present at fighting along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he did not fight at the beginning of the day, he waited till the sun had passed the meridian, the winds blew, and help came down. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2655)
[Machine] Abu Talha used to shoot arrows on the day of Uhud, between the Prophet's ﷺ hand and the Prophet's ﷺ back. Abu Talha was a skilled archer, and when he shot, the Prophet ﷺ would raise his head to see where the arrow would land. Abu Talha would lift his chest and say, "O Messenger of Allah, I swear by my father, no arrow will harm you without harming me." Abu Talha would wish to be in front of the Prophet ﷺ and say, "O Messenger of Allah, I am your shield, so command me to do whatever you please."

[Machine] Ibn Mas'ud, I was with the Messenger of Allah on the day of Hunayn. The people turned away from him, but I remained with him along with eighty men from the Muhajireen and the Ansar. We were walking on our feet about eighty steps without turning back. They were the ones on whom Allah sent tranquility. The Messenger of Allah was on his riding animal, advancing forward. His riding animal swerved, and he turned away from the saddle, so his neck became cut. I said, "May Allah elevate you." He said, "Pass me a handful of dirt." So, I handed it to him and he struck their faces with it, and their eyes became filled with dust. He said, "Where are the Muhajireen and the Ansar?" I said, "They are here." He said, "Call out to them." So, they came, and their swords were still in their hands as if they were shooting meteors. The disbelievers turned away fleeing.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever says, 'I seek forgiveness from Allah, the One whom there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence, and I repent to Him,' three times, his sins will be forgiven even if he was fleeing from the battlefield."
[Machine] I went to Al-Miqdad ibn Al-Aswad, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , while he was sitting on a tomb made of "Sayyara" (a type of stone), and he was separating bones from it while intending to go for battle. I said, "May Allah forgive you." He replied, "Come to the Surah of Al-Buhuth." Allah Almighty said, "March forth lightly or heavily" [Surah At-Tawbah 9:41], meaning the Surah of At-Tawbah. "This is a correct narration, and they did not deny it."

[Machine] The translation into English is:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in one of his expeditions and he passed by a group of women from Muzaynah. One of their male servants followed him. When they were on a certain road, the servant greeted him and asked, "Is that so-and-so?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes." The servant asked, "What is your business?" He replied, "I fight alongside you." The servant then asked, "Did your mistress give you permission?" He replied, "No." The servant said, "Go back to her and inform her, for a person like you is like a servant who does not pray and dies before returning to his master. So, recite the greetings of peace upon her." The servant returned to her and conveyed the message. She said, "Did Allah command you to recite the greetings of peace upon me?" He replied, "Yes." She said, "Go back and strive alongside him."

All the sins of a Shahid (martyr) are forgiven except debt. (Using translation from Muslim 1886a)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, 'Verily, the first drop of blood shed by a martyr forgives his sins.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever meets the enemy and remains patient until he is killed or victorious, he will not be tested in his grave."
[Machine] I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, lost Hamza when the people turned away from the battle. A man said, "I saw him by those trees saying, 'I am the lion of Allah and the lion of His Messenger. O Allah, I disassociate myself from what these people have done, Abu Sufyan and his companions. I apologize to You for their defeat.' So, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, leaned towards him, and when he saw his side, he cried. And when he saw what he was wrapped in, he sobbed. Then he said, 'Isn't there a funeral shroud?' A man from the Ansar stood up and threw a garment on him, then another man stood up and threw a garment on him. Jabir said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this garment is for your father, and this one is for my uncle Hamza.' Then Hamza was brought and the Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed over him. Then the martyrs were brought and placed next to Hamza, and he prayed for them. Then they were lifted and Hamza was left behind until he prayed for all the martyrs. Jabir said, 'I returned while feeling heavy-hearted, for my father had left debts and family behind. When it was night time, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sent for me and said, 'O Jabir, indeed Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has revived your father and made him speak.' I said, 'And he spoke?' He said, 'He asked for something.' I said, 'What did he ask for?' He said, 'He asked for his soul to be returned and for his enemies to be resurrected so that he may fight for the sake of Allah and be killed again.' Jabir said, 'I believed that they would not return.' The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, 'Hamza is the leader of the martyrs on the Day of Resurrection, according to an authentic chain of narrators, and Abu Hammad is the one who omitted it.'"

[Machine] Hamza was wrapped in a shroud in a coffin, and whenever they stretched it over his head, his legs would stick out. And when they stretched it over his legs, his head would stick out. The Prophet ﷺ commanded them to stretch it over his head and put musk on his legs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it were not for Safiyyah's heartbreak, we would have left Hamza unburied until Hamza is resurrected from the bellies of birds and animals."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ opened Mecca, then went to Ta'if and surrounded them with eight or seven men. Then he stayed there for the morning or afternoon, then he descended and migrated. Then he said, "O people! I am your forbidding excess and I advise you to be good to my family. Your meeting place is the Pond (in Paradise). And by the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will establish prayer and give zakat, or else I will send a man from among myself, or like myself, who will strike the necks of the fighters among them, and take their children captive." The people thought that he meant Abu Bakr or Umar, so he took Ali by the hand and said, "This is this." This hadith has a sound chain of narrators and Talaq bin Ali did not include it in his book Al-Amadah.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out on one of his expeditions, and I and another man went to meet him before embracing Islam. We said, "We feel embarrassed to witness a scene where our people are being fought." He said, "Have you both embraced Islam?" We replied, "No." He said, "Then we do not seek the assistance of pagans against pagans." So we embraced Islam and witnessed alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I killed a man, and the man struck me. I then married his daughter, who would say, "May you never be deprived of a husband who fought vigorously like this man." I would respond, "May you never be deprived of a husband who rushed your father to the Hellfire."

They said, "The Banu Qaynuqa' tribe, and they are the followers of Abdullah ibn Salam." He asked, "Have they embraced Islam?" They replied, "No, they are still following their own religion." He then said, "Tell them to go back, as we do not seek help from the polytheists."

[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, fought a battle in which Khalid bin Al-Walid was leading the vanguard. They passed by a dead woman who had been affected by the fighting in the vanguard, and they stopped to marvel at her features. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then caught up with them and they made way for him until he saw her. He said, "This was the one who fought." Then he looked at the faces of the people and said to one of them, "The right of Khalid bin Al-Walid should not be taken away. He should not be killed nor subjected to any kind of punishment." This narration was reported by Al-Mughira bin Abd al-Rahman and Ibn Juraij from Abu al-Zinad. "This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of both sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) and they did not exclude it." Reported by Ibn Juraij and others from Abu al-Zinad according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a secret troop on the day of Khaybar to fight the polytheists. They continued fighting until they reached a village. When they arrived, the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "What led you to kill the villagers?" They replied, "O Messenger of Allah, they were the children of the polytheists." He said, "And were your children any better than the children of the polytheists? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, every child is born on the fitrah (natural inclination towards monotheism) until his tongue speaks for him."

They looked at me and did not find that I had pubic hair, so the Prophet ﷺ left me and included me among the prisoners." This hadith was narrated by a group of Muslim scholars from Abdul Malik ibn Umayr, but they did not mention it. It seems that they did not carefully consider the narration as Mujahid bin Jubair followed Abdul Malik in his narration according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abdullah ibn Ghalib al-Laythi along with a detachment and I was also with them. He ordered them to attach Banu al-Mulawwih from all sides at al-Kadid. So we went out and when we reached al-Kadid we met al-Harith ibn al-Barsa al-Laythi, and seized him. He said: I came with the intention of embracing Islam, and I came out to go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said: If you are a Muslim, there is no harm if we keep you in chains for a day and night; and if you are not, we shall tie you with chains. So we tied him with chains.
