17. Book of Just War (Jihād) (1/5)
When the Prophet ﷺ wanted to say farewell to an army, he would say: I entrust to Allah your religion, what you are responsible for, and your final deeds. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2601)
“For me to hive a good send-off to a warrior who is going to fight in the cause of Allah, and to guard his goods when he goes out in the morning or evening, is dearer to me than this world and everything in it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2824)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ walked with them to the Baqi' al-Gharqad when he directed them, then he said, "Set forth in the name of Allah, O Allah help them." Al-Bukhari relied on Thawr ibn Yazid and 'Ikrimah, and Muslim relied on Muhammad ibn Ishaq, "And..."
[Machine] "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, advise me.' He said, 'I advise you to fear Allah and to recite the Takbeer upon every glory.' After the man left, the Prophet prayed, 'O Allah, grant him ease in his journey and make travel easy for him."
[Machine] "He used to ride behind Ali, and when he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: 'In the name of Allah.' And when he mounted the beast, he said: 'All praise is due to Allah,' three times, and 'Allah is the Greatest,' three times. Then he said: 'Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could not have subdued it ourselves.' [Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13] Then he said: 'There is no deity except You; Exalted are You. Indeed, I have been wronging myself, so forgive me my sins. Indeed, no one forgives sins except You.' Then he turned to one side and laughed, so I asked him: 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, what makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same as I did. So I asked him the same as you asked me, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Allah is pleased with His servant when he says: There is no deity except You; Indeed, I have been wronging myself, so forgive me my sins. Indeed, no one forgives sins except You.' My servant has known that he has a Lord who forgives and punishes."
[Machine] I saw Ali being brought a creature, and he mentioned a hadith similar to it, equally valid "and his witness is the hadith of Abu Huraira", according to the condition of Muslim.
[Machine] "I take hold of the reins of the camel and accompany it until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounts it. He then says, "O Allah, You are our companion in travel and the successor to our families. O Allah, accompany us with companionship, facilitate our journey, O Allah, grant me the keys to the earth, and make our travel easy for us. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel and the distress of return." Abu Zur'ah (narrator of the hadith) said, "Abu Huraira was an Arab man, if he wanted to say 'hardships of travel' he would have said, 'O Allah, make our travel easy for us.'"
‘Abd Allaah bin Jafar said “The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ seated me behind him(on his ride) one day, and told me secretly a thing asking me not to tell it to anyone. The place for easing dearer to the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ was a mound or host of palm trees by which he could conceal himself. He entered the garden of a man from the Ansar(Helpers). All of a sudden when a Camel saw the Prophet ﷺ it wept tenderly producing yearning sound and it eyes flowed. The Prophet ﷺ came to it and wiped the temple of its head. So it kept silence. He then said “Who is the master of this Camel? Whose Camel is this? A young man from the Ansar came and said “This is mine, Apostle of Allaah ﷺ.” He said “Don’t you fear Allaah about this beast which Allaah has given in your possession. It has complained to me that you keep it hungry and load it heavily which fatigues it.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2549)
[Machine] Narrated Anas, who was one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , said, "Ride these animals safely and start using them safely, but do not make them your chairs."
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was travelling and night came on, he said: O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah; I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil of what you contain, the evil of what has been created in you, and the evil of what creeps upon you; I seek refuge in Allah from lions, from large black snakes, from other snakes, from scorpions, from the evil of jinn which inhabit a settlement, and from a parent and his offspring. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2603)
[Machine] "Suhaib, the companion of the Prophet ﷺ , narrated that the Prophet ﷺ never saw a village that he intended to enter without saying, 'O Allah, Lord of the Seven Heavens and Lord of the Earth and all that they shade, Lord of the Devils and all that they lead astray, Lord of the Winds and all that they scatter, we ask You for the goodness of this village and the goodness of its inhabitants, and seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its inhabitants and what is within it.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best of companions are four, and the best of expeditions are four hundred, and the best of armies are four thousand, and twelve thousand will not be defeated due to their few numbers." This is an authentic chain of narration according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (referring to Al-Bukhari and Muslim). They did not exclude it due to any dispute among the narrators concerning it from Az-Zuhri.
"The companion who is the best to Allah is the one who is best to his companion. And the neighbor that is the best to Allah is the one that is best to his neighbor." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1944)
[Machine] People complained to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about walking, so he called for them and said, "You should walk." So we walked and found him (the Prophet) moving ahead of us.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "When entering a house, he would not step in until he had offered two units of prayer."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "If people knew what lies in solitude, I would never travel alone at night."
[Machine] A man went out from Khaybar, and two men followed him, and a man behind them reciting, saying, "Return until you catch up with them." So they turned around and then he said, "Indeed, these two are Shaytans. Recite upon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and inform him that we are collecting our charity. If it was suitable for him, we would have sent it to him." He said, "When he arrived at the Prophet, peace be upon him, he informed him. At that, he prohibited him from seclusion."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who have you accompanied?" He replied, "I have not accompanied anyone." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "The person traveling alone is accompanied by a devil, and the two people traveling together are accompanied by two devils, while the three people traveling together are a group."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "One person is a devil, two people are two devils, and three people are a group (ride)." According to the condition of a believer.
"The Messenger of Allah forbade (eating) animals that had been taken as targets, the milk of Al-Jallalah (animals that eat dung), and drinking directly from water skins." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4448)
On the day of Khaybar the Messenger of Allah (may pease be upon him) forbade (eating) the flesh of domestic asses, and the animal which feeds on filth: riding it and eating its flesh. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3811)
When Allah, Most High, revealed the verses: "Come not nigh to the orphan's property except to improve it". And "Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans", everyone who had an orphan with him went and separated his food from his (orphan's) food, and his drink from his drink, and began to detain the remaining food which he (the orphan) himself ate or spoiled. This fell heavy on them, and they mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Allah, Most High, revealed the verse: "They ask thee concerning orphans. Say: The best thing to do is what is for their good; if ye mix their affairs with yours, they are your brethren." Then they mixed their food with his food and their drink with his drink. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2871)
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, indeed we eat and do not feel satiated." He said, "Perhaps you separate from your food, come together upon it, and mention the name of Allah, so that He may bless it for you." We brought this narration as a witness.
A man emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Yemen. He asked (him): Have you anyone (of your relatives) in the Yemen? He replied: My parents. He asked: Did they permit you? He replied: No. He said: Go back to them and ask for their permission. If they permit you, then fight (in the path of Allah), otherwise be devoted to them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2530)
[Machine] That Jāhimah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I want to participate in a battle, so I came to seek your advice." He replied, "Do you still have a living mother?" He said, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then stay with her, for paradise is beneath her feet."
[Machine] Abu Talhah read the Quran verse "March forth, whether light or heavy" [Surah At-Tawbah 9:41]. So he said, "I suggest that we gather both the elderly and the young for battle." They replied, "O our father, you have already fought alongside the Prophet ﷺ until he passed away, and with Abu Bakr and Umar. We are fighting on your behalf." But he insisted, so he embarked on a ship until he passed away. They were unable to find an island to bury him on until after seven days. So, what changed?
[Machine] From the saying of Allah Almighty: "Unless you march forth, He will punish you with a painful torment." [Surah At-Tawbah 9:39], he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to dispatch an army from the living Arabs to fight, but they hesitated. As a result, Allah prevented the rain from falling on them, and that became a punishment for them."
When the Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca his banner was white. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2592)
[Machine] The translation of the given sentence is: "The banner of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was black, and his flagbearer was white." There is also a mention of "Yazid" as weak, but that part is not clear without further context.

[Machine] He told me, he said: While I was sitting in the cave, a man came to me and asked me about {the charging steeds, panting} [Quran 100:1], so I said to him, "The horses, when they change in the cause of Allah, then they return to their resting place at night and they make their food and kindle their fire." He turned away from me and went to Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was sitting beneath the Zamzam water fountain, and he asked him about the charging steeds. Ali said to him, "Did you ask anyone else before me?" He said, "Yes, I asked Ibn Abbas." He said, "It is the horses when they change in the cause of Allah." He said, "Then go and call him for me." When he stood in front of him, Ali said to him, "You give people religious verdicts without knowledge. By Allah, the first battle in Islam was the Battle of Badr, and there were only horsemen with us. There was a horse for Zubair and a horse for Al-Miqdad ibn Al-Aswad. So how can the charging steeds be wolves? Indeed, {the charging steeds, panting} [Quran 100:1] refers to the journey from Arafah to Muzdalifah, and from Muzdalifah to Mina, {thus they stamp therewith the different tracks} [Quran 100:4] when they step on it with their hooves and their edges." Ibn Abbas said, "So I retracted my statement and went back to the one who said Ali."

When the battle approached, he said, 'O Muhariq! Get the banner of your people.' I replied, 'I am not capable of that, as I am in this condition today.' He then said, 'Rather, O Muhariq! Get the banner of your people, for I have seen the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, 'It is preferable for a man to fight under the banner of his people.'"

Another one said, 'Allah knows best about them, they will receive what they have intended.' When they saw Umar approaching, leaning on his staff, they fell silent. Umar approached them and greeted them, then he asked, 'What were you all talking about?' They replied, 'We were discussing this secret mission that perished in the cause of Allah. One of us said, 'They are the workers of Allah, they perished in His cause, and their reward has been obligated for them.' Another one said, 'Allah knows best about them, they will receive what they have intended.' Umar said, 'Indeed, Allah knows that among the people, there are those who fight for the sake of fighting, as it is their desire, and they are unable to fight for any other reason. And indeed, among the people, there are those who fight for the sake of showing off and seeking reputation. And indeed, among the people, there are those who fight seeking the face of Allah, and they are the martyrs. And every person will be resurrected upon what they died for. And by Allah, a soul does not know what is intended for it. This is not the man who made it clear to us that he has been forgiven for all his past and future sins.' ﷺ "

People dispersed from around Abu Huraira, and Natil, who was from the Syrians. said to him: O Shaikh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life). (Then) will Allah say: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I fought for Thee until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell. Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Then will Allah ask: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur'an seeking Thy pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said:" He is a Qari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire. Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What have you done (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which Thou wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You):" He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell. But let me inform you about what you have witnessed: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a secret mission one day, and it didn't take long for him to stand up and praise them. He said, 'Indeed, your brothers have encountered the polytheists and have defeated them, leaving none of them remaining. And they said, 'Our Lord, inform our people that we have accepted [Your command] and are pleased with You as our Lord, and that You are pleased with us.' So I am their messenger to you, and indeed they have accepted [the command] and are pleased with it, and He is pleased with them.'"
