He saw a Hullah of Sira' silk being offered for sale at the door of the Masjid. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays, and (when meeting) the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." After that some (other) Hullahs were brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he gave me one. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you gave me this when you said what you said about it!" The Prophet [SAW] said: "I did not give it to you to wear it! Rather I gave it to you to give away or to sell." So 'Umar gave it to a brother of his son on his mother's side who was an idolater.

أَنَّهُ رَأَى حُلَّةَ سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذَا لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْدُ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَكَسَانِي مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَكْسُوهَا أَوْ لِتَبِيعَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مِنْ أُمِّهِ مُشْرِكًا

‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw a silken suit sold at the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchase this suit and wear it on Friday and on the occasion when a delegation (from the outside) comes to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One who has no share in the afterlife will put on this (suit). Afterwards suits of similar nature were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave ‘Umar b. al-Khattab one of these suits. ‘Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are giving it to me for use while you had told me such-and-such about the suit of ‘Utarid (I.e. sold by ‘Utarid). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I did not give it to you that you should wear it. Hence ‘Umar gave it to his brother who was a disbeliever at Mecca for wearing. أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوُفُودِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْقُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لَتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ لِتَكْسُوَهَا قَالَ فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا مِنْ أُمِّهِ بِمَكَّةَ

[Machine] I went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the market, leaning against him. I saw a flowing garment being sold at the market, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this and adorn yourself with it when Arab delegations come to you or when you address the people on Eid and other occasions." He said, "This is only worn by those who have no good character." So, I stayed for as long as Allah willed, then a flowing garment was given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent it to me. I went out hastily when I heard about it and when he sent it to me, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are sending me this garment, and yet I heard you say about it what you said?" He said, "Indeed, I only sent it to you for you to wear it or sell it and spend its price. I did not send it to you for you to adorn yourself with it." So, Umar sent it to the market.

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى السُّوقِ مُتَوَكِّئًا عَلَى فِيهِ فَرَأَيْتُ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ ابْتَعْتَ هَذِهِ فَتَجَمَّلْتَ بِهَا لِوُفُودِ الْعَرَبِ إِذَا أَتَوْكَ وَإِذَا خَطَبْتَ النَّاسَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ وَغَيْرِهِ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» فَمَكَثَتْ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ أُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَيَّ فَخَرَجْتُ فَزِعًا لَمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْهُ وَلِإِرْسَالِهِ بِهَا إِلَيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ تُرْسِلُ بِهَذِهِ الْحُلَّةِ إِلَيَّ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي إِنَّمَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَكْسُوَهَا أَوْ تَبِيعَهَا وَتَسْتَنْفِقَ بِثَمَنِهَا لَمْ أُرْسِلْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى السُّوقِ

ʿUmar saw a silken cloak over a man for sale and requested the Prophet ﷺ to buy it in order to wear it on Fridays and while meeting delegates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later on Messenger of Allah ﷺ got some silken cloaks similar to that one, and he sent one to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said to the Prophet ﷺ "How can I wear it, while you said about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have not given it to you to wear, but to sell or to give to someone else." So, ʿUmar sent it to his brother at Mecca before he embraced Islam. يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَتَلْبَسَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِنْ جَاءَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ «لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this garment and wear it for feasts and for the day of Jumu'ah (Friday), then Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Only those who have no sense of righteousness in the Hereafter wear such garments.' With this chain of narration, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ later sent a silk garment to 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab. When 'Umar received it, he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you clothed me in it, and I heard you say about it what you said.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I only sent it to you so that you could sell it or give it to some of your wives to wear.'"

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ ابْتَعْتَ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِلْوفُودِ وَلِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَبِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ سِيَرَاءَ مِنْ حَرِيرٍ كَسَاهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ لِتَكْسُوَهَا بَعْضَ نِسَائِكَ

Ibn 'Umar said, "'Umar saw a silk robe for sale. He said, 'Messenger of Allah, would you buy this robe and wear it on Jumu'a and when delegations visit you?' He replied, 'Only a person who has no portion in the Next World could wear this.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some robes made of the same material. He sent one of the robes to 'Umar. 'Umar exclaimed, 'How can I wear it when you said what you said about it?' The Prophet replied, 'I did not give it to you so that you could wear it. You can sell it or give it to someone.' 'Umar sent it to one of his half-brothers by his mother who was still an idolater." (see 26)

رَأَى عُمَرُ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوُفُودِ إِذَا أَتَوْكَ فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أُهْدِيَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَهْدَى إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ هَذِهِ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُهْدِهَا لَكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا أَهْدَيْتُهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ لِتَكْسُوَهَا فَأَهْدَاهَا عُمَرُ لأَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أُمِّهِ مُشْرِكٍ

"أَنَّ عُمَر رَأَى حُلَّةَ عَطَارِد التَّمِيمِىِّ مِنْ حَرِير سبراء تُبَاعُ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ الله! اشْتَرِ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَالْبِسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوفُودِ إذَا جَاؤُكَ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ : إِنَّما يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِى الآخِرَةِ، ثُمَّ أَتَى رسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بحُلَلٍ منْهَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا بحُلَّة، فَأَتَاهُ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَىَّ الْيَوْمَ بِحُلَّةٍ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِى حُلَّةِ عطَارد مَاَ قُلْتَ: فَقَالَ: تَسْتَنْفِقُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا نِسَاءَكَ".
