Ibn 'Umar said, "'Umar saw a silk robe for sale. He said, 'Messenger of Allah, would you buy this robe and wear it on Jumu'a and when delegations visit you?' He replied, 'Only a person who has no portion in the Next World could wear this.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some robes made of the same material. He sent one of the robes to 'Umar. 'Umar exclaimed, 'How can I wear it when you said what you said about it?' The Prophet replied, 'I did not give it to you so that you could wear it. You can sell it or give it to someone.' 'Umar sent it to a brother of his in Makka who had not yet become Muslim."

رَأَى عُمَرُ ؓ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ فَالْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِذَا جَاءَكَ الْوُفُودُ. قَالَ: «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ۔» فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ: «إِنِّي لَمْ أُعْطِكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوَهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ

Ibn 'Umar said, "'Umar saw a silk robe for sale. He said, 'Messenger of Allah, would you buy this robe and wear it on Jumu'a and when delegations visit you?' He replied, 'Only a person who has no portion in the Next World could wear this.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some robes made of the same material. He sent one of the robes to 'Umar. 'Umar exclaimed, 'How can I wear it when you said what you said about it?' The Prophet replied, 'I did not give it to you so that you could wear it. You can sell it or give it to someone.' 'Umar sent it to one of his half-brothers by his mother who was still an idolater." (see 26)

رَأَى عُمَرُ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوُفُودِ إِذَا أَتَوْكَ فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أُهْدِيَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَهْدَى إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ هَذِهِ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُهْدِهَا لَكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا أَهْدَيْتُهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ لِتَكْسُوَهَا فَأَهْدَاهَا عُمَرُ لأَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أُمِّهِ مُشْرِكٍ

'Abdullah ibn 'Umar said, "'Umar found a silk robe and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Buy this and wear it on Jumu'ah and when delegations come to you.' The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, 'Only someone who has no portion in the Next World wears this.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought some robes and sent one robe to 'Umar, one to Usama, and one to 'Ali. 'Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah! You have sent this to me when I heard you say what you said about it.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'You can sell it or take care of your needs with it.'"

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ قَالَ وَجَدَ عُمَرُ حُلَّةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِ هَذِهِ وَالْبَسْهَا عِنْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوْ حِينَ تَقْدِمُ عَلَيْكَ الْوُفُودُ فَقَالَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاَةُ وَالسَّلاَمُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ وَإِلَى أُسَامَةَ بِحُلَّةٍ وَإِلَى عَلِيٍّ بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرْسَلْتَ بِهَا إِلَيَّ لَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَقْضِي بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ

ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab saw a silken cloak (being sold) at the gate of the Mosque and said to Allah's Apostle, "I wish you would buy this to wear on Fridays and also on occasions of the arrivals of the delegations." Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "This will be worn by a person who will have no share (reward) in the Hereafter." Later on similar cloaks were given to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he gave one of them to ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab. On that ʿUmar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You have given me this cloak although on the cloak of Atarid (a cloak merchant who was selling that silken cloak at the gate of the mosque) you passed such and such a remark." Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I have not given you this to wear". And so ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab gave it to his pagan brother in Mecca to wear.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَخًا لَهُ بِمَكَّةَ مُشْرِكًا

ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab saw a silken dress (cloak) being sold at the gate of the Mosque and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Would that you buy it and wear it on Fridays and when the delegates come to you!" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later on some silk dresses were brought and Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent one of them to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said, "How do you give me this to wear while you said what you said about the dress of 'Utarid?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have not given it to you to wear." So, ʿUmar gave it to a pagan brother of his in Mecca.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً وَقَالَ أَكَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ بِمَكَّةَ مُشْرِكًا

ʿUmar saw a silken cloak over a man for sale and requested the Prophet ﷺ to buy it in order to wear it on Fridays and while meeting delegates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later on Messenger of Allah ﷺ got some silken cloaks similar to that one, and he sent one to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said to the Prophet ﷺ "How can I wear it, while you said about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have not given it to you to wear, but to sell or to give to someone else." So, ʿUmar sent it to his brother at Mecca before he embraced Islam.

رَأَى عُمَرُ حُلَّةً عَلَى رَجُلٍ تُبَاعُ فَقَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ تَلْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِذَا جَاءَكَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ

ʿUmar saw a silk suit being sold, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why don't you buy it so that you may wear it when delegates come to you, and also on Fridays?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn only by him who has no share in the Hereafter." Afterwards the Prophet ﷺ sent to ʿUmar a silk suit suitable for wearing. ʿUmar said to the Prophet, "You have given it to me to wear, yet I have heard you saying about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I sent it to you so that you might either sell it or give it to somebody else to wear."

أَنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ ابْتَعْتَهَا تَلْبَسُهَا لِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا أَتَوْكَ وَالْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُمَرَ حُلَّةَ سِيَرَاءَ حَرِيرٍ كَسَاهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوَهَا

My father, seeing a silken cloak being sold, said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Buy this and wear it on Fridays and when the foreign delegates pay a visit to you." He said, "This is worn only by that person who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later a few silken cloaks were given to the Prophet ﷺ as a gift, and he sent one of those cloaks to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said (to the Prophet), "How can I wear it while you have said about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I did not give it to you to wear but to sell or to give to someone else to wear." So ʿUmar sent it to his (pagan) brother who was from the inhabitants of Mecca before he (ʿUmar's brother) embraced Islam.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ وَالْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِذَا جَاءَكَ الْوُفُودُ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُعْطِكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ

Messenger of Allah, would that you buy it and wear it for the people on Friday and for (receiving) the delegations when they come to you? Upon this. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: go who wears it has no share (of reward) in the Hereafter. Then these garments were sent to Allah" s Messenger ﷺ, and he presented one of these silk garment to Umar. Thereupon Umar said: You make me wear (this silk garment) Whereas you said about the silk garment of Utarid (the person who had been busy selling this garment at the door of the mosque) what you had to say, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have not presented you this for wearing it (but to make use of its price) ; so 'Umar presented it to his polytheist brother in Mecca.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ

Would that you buy it? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: He who wears it has no share for him in the Hereafter. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with a striped silk garment and he sent it to him ('Umar). He (, Umar) said: You sent it to me whereas I heard from you about it what you had to say, whereupon he (Messenger of Allah) said: I sent it to you so that you may benefit by it.

أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ عُطَارِدٍ قَبَاءً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أَوْ حَرِيرٍ فَقَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فَأُهْدِيَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حُلَّةٌ سِيَرَاءُ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَىَّ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَرْسَلْتَ بِهَا إِلَىَّ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَسْتَمْتِعَ بِهَا

‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw a silken suit sold at the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchase this suit and wear it on Friday and on the occasion when a delegation (from the outside) comes to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One who has no share in the afterlife will put on this (suit). Afterwards suits of similar nature were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave ‘Umar b. al-Khattab one of these suits. ‘Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are giving it to me for use while you had told me such-and-such about the suit of ‘Utarid (I.e. sold by ‘Utarid). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I did not give it to you that you should wear it. Hence ‘Umar gave it to his brother who was a disbeliever at Mecca for wearing.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدَ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ

'Umar b. al-Khattab saw that a striped robe containing silk was being sold at the the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchased it and wore it on Friday and when a delegation came to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Only he who has no portion in the next world wears this (silk). Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in possession of some robes made of silk and gave one of them to 'Umar b. al-Khattab. 'Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are clothing me with it, but you said about the robe of 'Utarid what you said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I did not give it to you so that you may wear it. So 'Umar al-Khattab gave it to his brother who was a polytheist in Mecca to wear it.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ

'Umar bin al-Khattab saw a Hullah and said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays and when meeting the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." Then something similar was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he gave a Hullah to 'Umar from it. 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, have you given me this when you said what you said about the Hullah of 'Utarid?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I have not given it to you to wear it." So 'Umar gave it to an idolator brother of his in Makkah.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِثْلُهَا فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ

He saw a Hullah of Sira' silk being offered for sale at the door of the Masjid. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays, and (when meeting) the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." After that some (other) Hullahs were brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he gave me one. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you gave me this when you said what you said about it!" The Prophet [SAW] said: "I did not give it to you to wear it! Rather I gave it to you to give away or to sell." So 'Umar gave it to a brother of his son on his mother's side who was an idolater.

أَنَّهُ رَأَى حُلَّةَ سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذَا لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْدُ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَكَسَانِي مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَكْسُوهَا أَوْ لِتَبِيعَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مِنْ أُمِّهِ مُشْرِكًا

'Umar went out and saw a Hullah of Al-Istabraq being offered for sale in the marketplace. He went to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and said: "O Messenger of Allah, buy this and wear it on Fridays, and when the delegations come to you." The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by the one who has no share (in the Hereafter)." Then three Hullahs (of the same fabric) were brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he gave one to 'Umar, one to 'Ali and one to Usamah. He ('Umar) came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you said what you said about it, then you sent one to me!" He said: "Sell it and spend the money on your needs, or cut it into pieces for your womenfolk to use as head covers."

أَنَّ عُمَرَ خَرَجَ فَرَأَى حُلَّةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اشْتَرِهَا فَالْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَحِينَ يَقْدَمُ عَلَيْكَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِثَلاَثِ حُلَلٍ مِنْهَا فَكَسَا عُمَرَ حُلَّةً وَكَسَا عَلِيًّا حُلَّةً وَكَسَا أُسَامَةَ حُلَّةً فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ بَعَثْتَ إِلَىَّ فَقَالَ بِعْهَا وَاقْضِ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ أَوْ شَقِّقْهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ

[AI] Omar saw a beautiful dress or silk being sold and said to the Prophet ﷺ, "If you were to buy this, you could wear it on Fridays or for delegations." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "This is only worn by those who have no sense of modesty." Omar then gave some ornaments made from it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent one of them to Omar and he said, "I heard you say something that you did not say and you sent it to me." Omar replied, "I only sent it to you for you to sell it or wear it."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that Umar ibn al-Khattab saw a silk robe at the door of the mosque. He said, "Messenger of Allah, would you buy this robe and wear it on jumua and when envoys come to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only a person who has no portion in the next world wears this." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought some robes of the same material and gave Umar ibn al-Khattab one of the robes. Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, do you clothe me in it when you said what you said about the robe of Utarid?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not give it to you to wear." Umar gave it to a brother of his in Makka who was still an idolater.

'Umar went out and saw a Hullah of Al-Istabraq being offered for sale in the marketplace. He went to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and said: "O Messenger of Allah, buy this and wear it on Fridays, and when the delegations come to you." The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by the one who has no share (in the Hereafter)." فَقَالَ يَا رَسولَ اللهِ أَلا تَشْتَرِي هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَتَلْبَسَهَا إِذَا قَدِمَ عَلَيْكَ الْوُفُودُ وَيَوْمَ الْجُمْعَةِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا تِلْكَ ثِيَابُ مَنْ لا خَلاقَ لَهُ فَمَكَثَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَمْكُثَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَر بِحُلَّةٍ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أُهْدِيَتْ لَهُ فَجَاءَهُ عُمَر فَقَالَ يَا رَسولَ اللهِ أَرْسَلْتَ إليَّ بِهَذِهِ وقد سمعتك قلت فيها ما قلت قال إِنِّي لَمْ أُرْسِلْهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلكن إِنَّمَا أَرْسَلْتُ بِهَا لِتَبِيعَهَا وَتَجْعَلَهَا فِي بَعْضِ حَاجَتِكَ أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا بَعْضَ نِسَائِكَ

[AI] I went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the market, leaning against him. I saw a flowing garment being sold at the market, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this and adorn yourself with it when Arab delegations come to you or when you address the people on Eid and other occasions." He said, "This is only worn by those who have no good character." So, I stayed for as long as Allah willed, then a flowing garment was given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent it to me. I went out hastily when I heard about it and when he sent it to me, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are sending me this garment, and yet I heard you say about it what you said?" He said, "Indeed, I only sent it to you for you to wear it or sell it and spend its price. I did not send it to you for you to adorn yourself with it." So, Umar sent it to the market.

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى السُّوقِ مُتَوَكِّئًا عَلَى فِيهِ فَرَأَيْتُ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ ابْتَعْتَ هَذِهِ فَتَجَمَّلْتَ بِهَا لِوُفُودِ الْعَرَبِ إِذَا أَتَوْكَ وَإِذَا خَطَبْتَ النَّاسَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ وَغَيْرِهِ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» فَمَكَثَتْ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ أُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَيَّ فَخَرَجْتُ فَزِعًا لَمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْهُ وَلِإِرْسَالِهِ بِهَا إِلَيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ تُرْسِلُ بِهَذِهِ الْحُلَّةِ إِلَيَّ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي إِنَّمَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَكْسُوَهَا أَوْ تَبِيعَهَا وَتَسْتَنْفِقَ بِثَمَنِهَا لَمْ أُرْسِلْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى السُّوقِ

He saw a Hullah of Sira' silk being offered for sale at the door of the Masjid. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays, and (when meeting) the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "This is only worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." After that some (other) Hullahs were brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he gave me one. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you gave me this when you said what you said about it!" The Prophet [SAW] said: "I did not give it to you to wear it! Rather I gave it to you to give away or to sell." So 'Umar gave it to a brother of his son on his mother's side who was an idolater. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5295)

ʿUmar saw a silk suit being sold, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why don't you buy it so that you may wear it when delegates come to you, and also on Fridays?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn only by him who has no share in the Hereafter." Afterwards the Prophet ﷺ sent to ʿUmar a silk suit suitable for wearing. ʿUmar said to the Prophet, "You have given it to me to wear, yet I have heard you saying about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I sent it to you so that you might either sell it or give it to somebody else to wear." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5841)

[AI] That Umar went out and saw a decorated garment being sold in the market. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, buy it and wear it on Friday when the delegation comes to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is only worn by those who have no manners." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought three garments from it. Umar wore one, Ali wore one, and Usamah wore one. Umar came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you said about it what you said." He said, "Sell it and fulfill your need with it or tear it into pieces to distribute it among your wives." 9500 Imran ibn Musa al-Basri informed us, he said, Abdul Warith informed us, he said, Yahya informed us, he is the son of Ishaq, he said, Salim asked, "What is Istibrak?" I said, "It is what is thick from the dip and rough from it." He said, "I heard Abdullah ibn Umar saying, Umar ibn al-Khattab saw a man wearing a silk garment, so he brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, buy this.' And he narrated the hadith."

أَنَّ عُمَرَ خَرَجَ فَرَأَى حُلَّةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ فَأَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اشْتَرِهَا فَالْبَسْهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ حِينَ يَقْدَمُ عَلَيْكَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ» قَالَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِثَلَاثِ حُلَلٍ مِنْهَا فَكَسَا عُمَرُ حُلَّةً وَكَسَا عَلِيًّا حُلَّةً وَكَسَا أُسَامَةَ حُلَّةً فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ قَالَ «بِعْهَا فَاقْضِ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ أَوْ شَقِّقْهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ» 9500 أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بَصْرِيٌّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ قَالَ سَالِمٌ مَا الْإِسْتَبْرَقُ؟ قُلْتُ مَا غَلُظَ مِنَ الدِّيبَاجِ وَخَشُنَ مِنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ رَأَى عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ مَعَ رَجُلٍ حُلَّةَ سُنْدُسٍ فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اشْتَرِ هَذِهِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ

ʿUmar saw a silken cloak over a man for sale and requested the Prophet ﷺ to buy it in order to wear it on Fridays and while meeting delegates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter." Later on Messenger of Allah ﷺ got some silken cloaks similar to that one, and he sent one to ʿUmar. ʿUmar said to the Prophet ﷺ "How can I wear it, while you said about it what you said?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have not given it to you to wear, but to sell or to give to someone else." So, ʿUmar sent it to his brother at Mecca before he embraced Islam. يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةَ فَتَلْبَسَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِنْ جَاءَ الْوَفْدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا بِحُلَلٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَيْفَ أَلْبَسُهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ «لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوهَا» فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَخٍ لَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi recited on behalf of Malik, and Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated that Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated that Ja'far ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn Abdusalam narrated that Yahya ibn Yahya said: I read on behalf of Malik, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, that Umar ibn Al-Khattab saw a luxurious garment at the door of the mosque, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this and wear it on Fridays and when delegations visit you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only those who have no share of the Hereafter wear this." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received some clothes as gifts, and he gave Umar a garment. Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have made me wear it even though you said about the garment of Al-Atarid what you did not say about this one." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not make you wear it so that you could wear it." So, Umar gave it to his brother who was a polytheist in Mecca.

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ فِيمَا قَرَأَ عَلَى مَالِكٍ ح وَأنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ قَالَا ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا؛ لِتَلْبَسَهَا فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ

‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw a silken suit sold at the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchase this suit and wear it on Friday and on the occasion when a delegation (from the outside) comes to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One who has no share in the afterlife will put on this (suit). Afterwards suits of similar nature were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gave ‘Umar b. al-Khattab one of these suits. ‘Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are giving it to me for use while you had told me such-and-such about the suit of ‘Utarid (I.e. sold by ‘Utarid). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I did not give it to you that you should wear it. Hence ‘Umar gave it to his brother who was a disbeliever at Mecca for wearing. [AI] "O Messenger of Allah, if you buy this garment and wear it for feasts and for the day of Jumu'ah (Friday), then Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Only those who have no sense of righteousness in the Hereafter wear such garments.' With this chain of narration, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ later sent a silk garment to 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab. When 'Umar received it, he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you clothed me in it, and I heard you say about it what you said.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I only sent it to you so that you could sell it or give it to some of your wives to wear.'"
