The recitation of Surat al-Najm in Makkah (قصّة الغرانيق)

The Prophet ﷺ was in Makkah, and he recited Surat al-Najm until he reached, "Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other?" Then there flowed upon his tongue: "Those are the exalted gharaniq (cranes); intercession from them is hoped for." He said: When the polytheists among the people of Makkah heard that, they were pleased with it, and it became hard upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Allah ﷻ sent down: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he recited, Satan cast into his recitation; but Allah abolishes what Satan casts, then Allah makes firm His verses."

This hadith: we do not know it to be narrated from the Prophet ﷺ with a connected chain from him that may be cited except through this chain. We do not know anyone who connected this hadith from Shu'bah, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id, from Ibn Abbas except Umayyah, and we did not hear it except from Yusuf ibn Hammad, who was trustworthy. Others besides Umayyah narrate it from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, in mursal form. This hadith is known from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas, and Umayyah is trustworthy and well-known.

البزّار:٤٤٦٦ – حَدَّثنا يوسف بن حماد قَال حَدَّثنا أميه بن خالد قَال حَدَّثنا شُعْبَةُ عَن أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَن سَعِيد بْنِ جُبَير عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِيمَا أَحْسَبُ الشَّكُّ فِي الْحَدِيثِ

أَنَّ النَّبيَّ ﷺ كَانَ بِمَكَّةَ، فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ النَّجْمِ حَتَّى انتهى إلى ﴿ أفرأيتم اللت والعزى ومناه الثَّالِثة الأُخرَى﴾، فَجَرَى عَلَى لِسَانِهِ: «تِلْكَ الْغَرَانِيقُ الْعُلا الشَّفَاعَةُ منها ترتجى». قال: فسمع ذلك مشركي أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ فَسُرُّوا بِذَلِكَ، فَاشْتَدَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: ﴿ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولٍ ولاَ نَبِيٍّ إلاَّ إِذَا تَمَنَّى أَلْقَى الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أُمْنِيَّتِهِ فَيَنْسَخُ اللَّهُ مَا يُلْقِي الشيطان ثُمَّ يحكم الله آياته﴾.

وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ بِإِسْنَادٍ مُتَّصِلٍ عَنْهُ يَجُوزُ ذِكْرُهُ إلاَّ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ولاَ نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا أَسْنَدَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَن أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَن سَعِيد عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ إلاَّ أُمَيَّةُ وَلَمْ نَسْمَعْهُ إلاَّ مِن يُوسُفَ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ وَكان ثِقَةً وَغَيْرُ أُمَيَّةَ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ عَن أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَن سَعِيد بْنِ جُبَير مُرْسَلا وَإنَّما هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ يُعْرَفُ عَنِ الْكَلْبِيِّ عَن أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَأُمَيَّةُ ثِقَةٌ مَشْهُورٌ

When he prostrated, the Muslims and the polytheists prostrated, so Allah ﷻ revealed, "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that, when he recited, Satan cast," up to His saying, "the punishment of a barren day"; the Day of Badr.
