60. Hunting
[Machine] We sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with three hundred riders. Our leader, Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, guided us to ambush the Quraysh caravan. We camped on the coast. Sufyan said another time, "So we went to the coast and camped there for half a month. We suffered from severe hunger until we ate rotting meat." He said, "So that army was called the Army of Rotting Meat. Then the sea threw a creature at us called al-Anbar, and we ate from it for half a month and used its fat to moisturize our bodies until our bodies were revitalized." He said, "So Abu Ubaidah took a rib from his ribs and erected it, attaching it to the longest of his companions." Sufyan said another time, "So Abu Ubaidah took another rib from his ribs and erected it, and took another man and a camel. He passed under it." Jabir said, "There was a man from the people who slaughtered three sheep, then slaughtered three more, then slaughtered three more. Abu Ubaidah prohibited him."

We set out in the army of Al-Khabt and Abu Ubaida was the commander of the troops. We were struck with severe hunger and the sea threw out a dead fish the like of which we had never seen, and it was called Al-ʿAnbar. We ate of it for half a month. Abu Ubaida took (and fixed) one of its bones and a rider passed underneath it (without touching it). (Jabir added:) Abu 'Ubaida said (to us), "Eat (of that fish)." When we arrived at Medina, we informed the Prophet ﷺ about that, and he said, "Eat, for it is food Allah has brought out for you, and feed us if you have some of it." So some of them gave him (of that fish) and he ate it. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4362)
Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) sent us (on an expedition) and appointed Abu 'Ubaida our chief that we might intercept a caravan of the Quraish and provided us with a bag of dates. And he found for us nothing besides it. Abu Ubaida gave each of us one date (everyday). I (Abu Zubair, one of the narrators) said: What did you do with that? He said: We sucked that just as a baby sucks and then drank water over that, and it sufficed us for the day until night. We beat off leaves with the help of our staffs, then drenched them with water and ate them. We then went to the coast of the sea, and there rose before us on the coast of the sea something like a big mound. We came near that and we found that it was a beast, called al-'Anbar (spermaceti whale). Abu 'Ubaida said. It is dead. He then said: No (but it does not matter), we have been sent by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the path of Allah and you are hard pressed (on account of the scarcity of food), so you eat that. We three hundred in number stayed there for a month, until we grew bulky. He (Jabir) said: I saw how we extracted pitcher after pitcher full of fat from the cavity of its eye, and sliced from it compact piece of meat equal to a bull or like a bull. Abu 'Ubaida called forth thirteen men from us and he made them sit in the cavity of its eye, and he took hold of one of the ribs of its chest and made it stand and then saddled the biggest of the camels we had with us and it passed under it (the arched rib), and we provided ourselves with pieces of boiled meat (especially for use in our journey). When we came back to Medina, we went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: That was a provision which Allah had brought forth for you. Is there any piece of meat (left) with you, so tnat you give to us that? He (Jabir) said: We sent to Messenger of Allah ﷺ tome of that (a piece of meat) and he ate it. "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army towards the east coast and appointed Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as their chief, and the army consisted of three-hundred men including myself. We marched on till we reached a place where our food was about to finish. Abu- 'Ubaida ordered us to collect all the journey food and it was collected. My (our) journey food was dates. Abu 'Ubaida kept on giving us our daily ration in small amounts from it, till it was exhausted. The share of everyone of us used to be one date only." I said, "How could one date benefit you?" Jabir replied, "We came to know its value when even that too finished." Jabir added, "When we reached the sea-shore, we saw a huge fish which was like a small mountain. The army ate from it for eighteen days. Then Abu 'Ubaida ordered that two of its ribs be fixed and they were fixed in the ground. Then he ordered that a she-camel be ridden and it passed under the two ribs (forming an arch) without touching them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2483)

[Machine] I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition, in which I was among them, to the coast. We ran out of supplies until we gathered what each person had. Then we combined them together until it became enough to give each person an amount according to what they could bear. So, no person would receive anything except for a date each day. A man said to Jabir, 'O Abu Abdullah, what benefit does a date have for a person?' Jabir said, 'O son of my brother, we found it to be the only thing left when it was consumed.' Jabir said, 'While we were in that situation, we saw a black mass. When it covered us, we saw that it was a creature from the sea. The army stayed with it for eighteen nights, and they would eat from it whatever they wanted until they became satisfied.'"
A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Messenger of Allah, we travel on the sea and take a small quantity of water with us. If we use this for ablution, we would suffer from thirst. Can we perform ablution with sea water? The Messenger ﷺ replied: Its water is pure and what dies in it is lawful food. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 83)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the sea, and he said that its water is pure and its dead creatures are lawful to eat.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah has made fishing in the sea easy for you. This is not a strong chain of narration, but it has been narrated from Abu Bakr As-Siddiq."
[Machine] Abu Bakr As-Siddiq said, "There is nothing in the sea except that Allah has made it pure for you."
[Machine] Amr ibn Dinar and Abu Zuber heard Shurayh, a man who met the Prophet ﷺ, say, "Everything in the sea is considered slaughtered." This was narrated from Abu Zuber, from Shurayh as a raised narration, and it was also narrated from Jabir and Abdullah ibn Sarjis as raised narrations. And in some of what we mentioned about its chain of narration is sufficient, and with Allah is the facilitation.
