I said: Messenger of Allah, I set off trained dogs and they catch for me (the game) and I recite the name of Allah over it (I slaughter the game by reciting Bismillah-i-Allah-o-Akbar), whereupon he said: When you set off your trained dogs, if you recited the name of Allah (while setting them off), then eat (the game). I said: Even if they (the trained dogs) kill that (the game)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Even if these kill, but (on the condition) that no other dog, which you did not set off (along with your dogs), participates (in catching the game). I said to him: I throw Mi'rad, a heavy featherless blunt arrow, for hunting and killing (the game). Thereupon he said: When you throw Mi'rad, and it pierces, then eat, but if it falls flatly (and beats the game to death), then do not eat that. (Using translation from Muslim 1929a)   

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا نُرْسِلُ الْكِلَابَ الْمُعَلَّمَةَ فَيُمْسِكْنَ عَلَيَّ وَأَذْكُرُ اسْمَ اللهِ قَالَ إِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الْمُعَلَّمَ وَذَكَرْتَ اسْمَ اللهِ فَكُلْ قُلْتُ وَإِنْ قَتَلْنَ؟ قَالَ وَإِنْ قَتَلْنَ مَا لَمْ يَشْرَكْهَا كَلْبٌ لَيْسَ مَعَهَا قُلْتُ لَهُ فَإِنِّي أَرْمِي بِالْمِعْرَاضِ الصَّيْدَ فَأُصِيبُ قَالَ إِذَا رَمَيْتَ بِالْمِعْرَاضِ فَخَرَقَ فَكُلْهُ وَإِنْ أَصَابَهُ بِعَرْضِهِ فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ  

[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about hunting with a dog. He said, "Whatever you catch with your dog, then eat it, as its capture is its gift (to you). But if you shoot with your dog or other dogs and catch a different dog, then do not eat it, for you have mentioned the name of Allah on your dog, but not on the other dogs."  

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْكَلْبِ فَقَالَ مَا أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْكَ فَكُلْ فَإِنَّ أَخْذَهُ ذَكَاتُهُ وَإِنْ أَصَبْتَ مَعَ كَلْبِكَ أَوْ كِلَابِكَ كَلْبًا غَيْرَهُ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ فَإِنَّمَا ذَكَرْتَ اسْمَ اللهِ عَلَى كَلْبِكَ وَلَمْ تَذْكُرْهُ عَلَى كِلَابِ غَيْرِكَ  

[Machine] Beneficial, Allah says, "except what you slaughter" [Al-Maidah 3]. You say, "Even if he killed, he would say, 'Woe to you, O son of Azure! Do you think if I were to catch him on a small bone, I would be at a disadvantage? By Allah, I know in which dogs it descended. It descended in the dogs of the Bani Nabhan from Tayy." Woe to you, O son of Azure! You will surely have news.  

نَافِعٌ يَقُولُ اللهُ {إِلَّا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ} [المائدة 3] تَقُولُ أَنْتَ وَإِنْ قَتَلَ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ يَا ابْنَ الْأَزْرَقِ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَمْسَكَ عَلَى سِنَّورٍ فَأَدْرَكْتُ ذَكَاتَهُ كَانَ يَكُونُ عَلَيَّ بَأْسٌ؟ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ فِي أِيِّ كِلَابٍ نَزَلَتْ نَزَلَتْ فِي كِلَابِ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ مِنْ طَيِّئٍ وَيْحَكَ يَا ابْنَ الْأَزْرَقِ وَلَيَكُونَنَّ لَكَ نَبَأٌ
