[Machine] O Commander of the Faithful, I left in Kufa a man who recites the Quran from the depths of his heart, which angered Umar to the extent that his face swelled up, and then he said, "Who is he?" They said, "Abdullah bin Mas'ood." He said to Allah, "Is he your father? And who is more deserving of that than him?" I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "Whoever wishes to recite the Quran as it was revealed, then let him recite it in the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd."

[Machine] "O Commander of the faithful, I have left in Iraq a man who recites the Qur'an from the depths of his heart, which angered Umar until his face turned red. Umar said to him, "I know what you are saying repeatedly." The man replied, "I only inform you of the truth." Umar asked, "Who is he?" The man said, "He is the son of Umm Abd." Umar calmed down until his anger subsided, then he said, "No one on the face of the earth is more deserving of that than him." Umar continued, "Let me tell you about this: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed overnight at the house of Abu Bakr due to some need, until he was very late. When he returned between me and Abu Bakr, I reached the mosque and saw a man from the migrants praying. He stood listening to his recitation, and I and my companion did not know who he was. When he stood for an hour, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, there is a man from the migrants praying, if only you had come back while I was still bald.' He winked at me and the Prophet ﷺ began to listen to his recitation. Then he performed the bowing, and prostrated, then sat and supplicated. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Ask, and you will be given.' I and my companion did not know who he was, until we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever desires to recite the Qur'an as it was revealed, then let him recite it as Ibn Umm Abd recites.' He said, 'That is when I and my companion knew who he was.' He said, 'So I went to Abdullah, I wanted to give him the good news, and he said, 'Abu Bakr has already beaten you, and by the name of Allah, I have not preceded Abu Bakr to anything good except that he has preceded me.'"

[Machine] That Abu Bakr and Umar were informed by the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "Whoever desires to recite the Quran as it was revealed, then let him recite it in the recitation of Ibn Mas'ood."
When Abu Bakr and I were with him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by ʿAbdullah bin Masʿood, when he was reciting [in prayer]. He stood and listened to his recitation, then ‘Abdullah bowed and prostrated, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿAsk, you will be given; ask, you will be given.ʿ Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went away and said: “Whoever would like to recite the Qurʿan fresh as it was revealed, let him learn it from Ibn Umm ʿAbd,ʿ Then I went at night to ‘Abdullah bin Masʿood to tell him the good news of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, and when I knocked on the door - or he said: when he heard my voice - he said: What brings you here at this time? I said: I have come to tell you the glad tidings of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. He said: Abu Bakr beat you to it. I said: If he did that, he is always ahead in doing righteous deeds. We never competed in doing good deeds but Abu Bakr beat us to it. (Using translation from Aḥmad 265)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Follow in the footsteps of those who come after me, Abu Bakr and Umar, and take guidance from Ammar, and hold onto the covenant of Abdullah ibn Masood."
[Machine] Abdullah delivered a sermon when the Qur'an and the mosque were crowded with the people of Badr. He said, "The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ knew that I was the most knowledgeable among them about the Book of Allah." A man said, "Misfortune to you!" Then, I saw that he became embarrassed by what he said, so he said, "I am not better than them, even if I knew a man who is more knowledgeable about the Book of Allah than me and camels could reach him, I would go to him." The man then said, "When Abdullah finished his sermon, I sat in the gathering to hear what they say, and I did not hear anyone objecting to that."

[Machine] When Uthman commanded regarding the copies of the Quran as he was commanded, Abdullah stood up and praised Allah. Then he said, "O people, surely Allah says, 'And whoever commits a sin only earns it against himself. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.' So commit transgression with the copies of the Quran upon the recitation of the one whom I command to recite it upon the recitation of Zaid bin Thabit. By He in whose hands is my soul, I have taken from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seventy surahs. And Zaid bin Thabit has two things, he plays with the boys, and by He in whose hands is my soul, if I knew anyone more knowledgeable in the Book of Allah than me, I would come to him."
[Machine] "And by Allah, no verse from the Quran was revealed except that I know where it was revealed, and no verse is revealed except that I know its context. And if I knew anyone who knows more about the Book of Allah than me, even if it were a distance of a camel's journey, I would go to him."

By Him besides Whom there is no god, there is no chapter in the Book of Allah about which I do not know as to where it was revealed and there is no verse about which I do not know in what context it was revealed, and if I were to know of one having a better understanding of the Book of Allah than I (and I could reach him) on the back of the mule, I would have definitely gone to him on camel's back. Then I entered the house and did not hold back. I read and did not hold back. Then suddenly I found myself with Ash'ari and Hudhayfah and Ibn Mas'ud speaking to each other. Hudhayfah said to Ibn Mas'ud, "Give them this Quran." He said, "No, by Allah, I will not give it to them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this Quran to me seventy-two times, then I will give it to them, and by Allah, I will not give it to them."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, Ibn Mas'ood will be the foremost and greatest of all on the Day of Judgment, (in knowledge and closeness to Allah) greater and more exalted than Mount Uhud."

[Machine] While he was walking behind the Prophet ﷺ, his companions or some of them would gossip about him. So the Prophet ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand my soul is, the servant of Allah will be heavier in the scales on the Day of Resurrection than Uhud." It was as if they were astonished by his lightness.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr came to me. They had fled from the pagans, while I was tending to the sheep of Ibn Abi Mu'ayt with some horses. He said, "O boy, do you have any milk to give us to drink?" I replied, "I am a trustworthy person, but I am not the one who milks them." He then asked, "Do you have a container that the stallion has not urinated in?" I said, "Yes," and I brought it to him. He wiped the udder and the udder was filled. Abu Bakr also came with a concave rock, and he milked and drank from it. He also gave me some to drink and said to the udder, "Contract." And it contracted.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me, and they had escaped from the polytheists. I was herding sheep for Ibn Abu Mu'ayt on horseback. He said, "O boy, do you have any milk to give us to drink?" I replied, "I am entrusted (with the sheep) and cannot give it to you." He asked, "Do you have any container on which a stallion has not urinated?" I said, "Yes." So, I brought it to him, and he wiped the container and poured the milk into it. The container was full, and he drank from it as Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also drank. Then he gave it to me and said to the container, "Constrict (the milk)." So, it constricted.

[Machine] I was herding sheep for Uqbah ibn Abi Muayt when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and said, "O boy, do you have any milk?" I replied, "Yes, but I am entrusted." He said, "Bring me a sheep that has not been mated." So I brought him a female lamb or a young lamb, and he began to stroke its udder and pray until the udder was filled. Then Abu Bakr came with a rock and he milked it, then the Prophet ﷺ drank from it. Then he said to the udder, "Shrink with the permission of Allah." So it shrank back to how it was before.

[Machine] I was with the sheep of Uqbah bin Abi Muayt when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and said, "O young boy, do you have any milk?" I said, "Yes, but I am entrusted with it." He said, "Bring me a sheep that has not been mounted by a male." So I brought him a female sheep or a young one, and he began to stroke its udder and supplicate until the milk flowed. Then Abu Bakr brought a rock and he milked into it, and then Abu Bakr drank, followed by the Prophet ﷺ. Then he said to the udder, "Shrink by the permission of Allah." So it shrank and returned to its original state.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am pleased for my Ummah with what the son of Umme Abdi is pleased with."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said to him, "Read." So he began Surah An-Nisa' until he reached the verse, "So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad], against these as a witness?" His eyes filled with tears and he said, "Enough for us."
The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Recite (the Qur'an) to me." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ Shall I recite (the Qur'an) to you while it has been revealed to you?" He said, "Yes." So I recited Surat-An-Nisa' (The Women), but when I recited the Verse: 'How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people.' (4.41) He said, "Enough for the present," I looked at him and behold! His eyes were overflowing with tears (Using translation from Bukhārī 5050)
[Machine] He recited to the Prophet ﷺ until he came to this Verse: "How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?" (4:41). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cried and said in the Hadith: "Whoever wants to recite the Qur'an as it was revealed, let him recite it in the recitation of Ibn 'Umm 'Abd".
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked me to read Surah An-Nisa while he was on the pulpit. I continued reading until I reached the verse "So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad], against these [people] as a witness?" The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ filled with tears, and he said, "Whoever wants to recite the Quran as it was revealed, should recite it according to the recitation of Ibn 'Ummi 'Abd."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Recite the Quran to me." Ibn Mas'ood said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I recite the Quran to you when it was revealed upon you?" He said, "Indeed, I love to hear it from someone else." So he recited to him until he reached the verse, "So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad], against these [people] as a witness?" (Surah An-Nisa, verse 41). The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ filled with tears, and he said, "Whoever wants to recite the Quran as it was revealed should recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd." This was narrated by 'Amr ibn Marzooq, the companions of Shu'bah, and it was transmitted by Sulayman ibn Harb.
[Machine] Ibn Masud, I recited Surah An-Nisa to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when I came to this verse, "So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad] against these [people] as a witness?" His eyes overflowed with tears.

"'Abdullah said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to recite for him while he was on the Minbar. So I recited from Surat An-Nisa for him, until I reached: How then (will it be) when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (Muhammad) as a witness against these people? (4:41) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was beckoning me (to stop) with his hand, and I looked at him and his eyes were flowing with tears." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3024)

[Machine] That Abdullah struck Abu Jahl and he did not do anything. He said, "Did you not fight me yesterday?" He said, "That was him." So he took his sword and struck him until he killed him.
[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Badr and said, "I have killed Abu Jahl." He said, "Is it Allah, the One besides whom there is no god, who has killed him?" I said, "It is Allah, the One besides whom there is no god, and I have killed him." Then the Prophet ﷺ expressed his joy and said, "Show me his body." So I went with him until we stood over him, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Praise be to Allah, who has humiliated this Pharaoh of this nation. Take him to the edge of the pit." I said, "I had struck him with my sword, but it did not cut him. So I took his sword and struck him with it until I killed him." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bestowed his sword upon me.
[Machine] I came across Abu Jahl, who was in a state of weakness, with his head covered with a bandage. He had a good sword with him, while I had a poor one. I raised my sword to strike him on his head and remembered the incident when he had hit my head with a stone in Makkah until his hand became weak. So I took his sword and raised his head with it. He said, "Whose back is it for us or against us? Did you go back on our agreement in Makkah?" I killed him and then went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have killed Abu Jahl." He said, "By Allah in whose hand is my soul, did you kill him?" He then swore to me three times and got up and accompanied me to where he lay and then invoked curse upon him.
