Abu Bakr leading prayer and clapping in prayer
[AI] I was with Sahl ibn Saad al-Saidi when it was said to him, “There was something between Banu Amr ibn Awf and the people of Quba.” He said: That was long ago (). We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when someone came and it was said, “There has been something among the people of Quba.” So the Prophet ﷺ went out to them to reconcile between them, and he was delayed from the people. Bilal said to Abu Bakr, “Shall I give the iqamah for the prayer?” He said, “As you wish.” So Bilal gave the iqamah, and the people put Abu Bakr forward. While he was praying, the Prophet ﷺ came, making his way through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr. They began clapping ( *), and he would not turn around during prayer. When they did it repeatedly, he turned around, and there was the Prophet ﷺ standing behind him. The Prophet ﷺ gestured to him, so he prayed.
When he finished, he said: “What prevented you, when I commanded, from not having prayed?” He said, “It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to go ahead of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Then the Prophet ﷺ said: “What is this clapping in prayer? Saying Subhanallah is only for men, and clapping is for women.”
