He heard Abu Ad-Darda say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: 'Is there recitation in every prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' A man among the Ansar said: 'Is that obligatory?' He (Abu Ad-Darda) turned to me (Kathir), as I was closest of the people to him, and said: 'I think that if the Imam leads the people, that is sufficient for them.'" [Machine] I heard Abu Darda say, he was asked: "Is there recitation in every prayer, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." Then, a man from the Ansar said: "This is necessary." So, the Messenger of Allah said to me while I was closest to him: "I do not see the Imam when he leads the people in prayer except that he suffices them like this."
