I heard it from 'Auf b. Malik that the Prophet ﷺ said prayer on the dead body, and I remembered his prayer:" O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him, give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious; wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from faults as Thou wouldst cleanse a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate. Admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire." ('Auf bin Malik) said: I earnestly desired that I were this dead body.  

سَمِعْتُ عَوْفَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَحَفِظْتُ مِنْ دُعَائِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ أَوْ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ قَالَ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا ذَلِكَ الْمَيِّتَ قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَيْضًا  

I heard the Prophet ﷺ say (while offering prayer on a dead body): O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him. Give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail, cleanse him from faults as is cleaned a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate, and save him from the trial of the grave and torment of Hell. 'Auf b. Malik said: I earnestly desired that I were the dead person to receive the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as this dead body had (received).  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَصَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِمَاءٍ وَثَلْجٍ وَبَرَدٍ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ لَوْ كُنْتُ أَنَا الْمَيِّتَ لِدُعَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى ذَلِكَ الْمَيِّتِ  

"I heard the Messenger of Allah offer the funeral prayer and say: Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu waʿfu ʿanhu wa ʿafihi, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu waghsilhu bi-ma'in wa thaljin wa-barad, wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama yunaqqa ath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. Wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa qihi 'adhab al-qabri wa 'adhab an-nar (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, forgive him and keep him safe and sound, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of his sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of Hell-fire)." 'Awf said: "I wished that I was that deceased person because of the supplication that the Messenger of Allah said for that deceased person."

Or he said: "Wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabr (And protect him from the torment of the grave.)"

"I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering the (funeral) prayer for one who had died, and I heard him say in his supplication: 'Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa 'afihi was a'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' ,adkhalahu waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama ynaqqath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering the funeral prayer for a man among the Ansar, and I heard him say: ‘Allahumma salli ‘alayhi waghfirlahu warhamhu, wa ‘afihi wa’fu ‘anhu, waghsilhu bi ma’in wa thaljin wa baradin, wa naqqihi min adh-dhunubi wal-khataya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas, wa abdilhu bi darihi daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlili, wa qihi fitnatal-qabri wa ‘adhaban-nar. (O Allah, send blessing upon him, forgive him, have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound, and pardon him; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him in exchange for his house that is better than his house, and a family that is better than his family. Protect him from the trial of the grave and the torment of the Fire).’”  

شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِمَاءٍ وَثَلْجٍ وَبَرَدٍ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَالْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ بِدَارِهِ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي فِي مُقَامِي ذَلِكَ أَتَمَنَّى أَنْ أَكُونَ مَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral, and I memorized his supplication in which he said, "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him good health, pardon him, honor his abode, enlarge his entrance, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, replace his home with a better one, his family with a better one, and his spouse with a better one. Enter him into paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the fire." Until I wished that I was that deceased person.  

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَحَفِظْتُ مِنْ دُعَائِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ واعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ» حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا ذَلِكَ الْمَيِّتُ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us on the funeral of a man from the Ansar. I heard him say, "O Allah, send blessings upon him, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him good health, pardon him, honor his place of reception and his dwelling, wash him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from impurities, replace his home with a better home, and his family with a better family. Protect him from the trials of the grave and the punishment of the Fire." Awf said, "Indeed, I saw myself desiring that in my dream, to be the deceased in place of that Ansari man, when I witnessed the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."  

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى جَنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَاغْفِرِ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ واعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَمُنْقَلَبَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِمَاءٍ وَثَلْجٍ وَبَرَدٍ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ» قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَتَمَنَّى فِي مَنَامِي ذَلِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا الْمَيِّتُ مَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ لَمَّا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

Or he said: "Wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabr (And protect him from the torment of the grave.)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1984)  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَسَمِعْتُ مِنْ دُعَائِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزَلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَنَجِّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ» أَوْ قَالَ «أَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»  

I heard the Prophet ﷺ say (while offering prayer on a dead body): O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him. Give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail, cleanse him from faults as is cleaned a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate, and save him from the trial of the grave and torment of Hell. 'Auf b. Malik said: I earnestly desired that I were the dead person to receive the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as this dead body had (received). (Using translation from Muslim 963d)   

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ فَفَهِمْتُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ عَلَيْهِ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِمَاءِ بَرَدٍ أَوْ ثَلْجٍ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ اللهُمَّ أَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا الْمَيِّتَ  

"اللَّهُمَّ اغْفرْ له وارْحَمْهُ وعَافهِ واعْفُ عنه وأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ ووسِّعْ مُدْخَلَه واغسِله بالماءِ والثلج والبَردِ، ونقِّه من الخطايا كما نقَّيتَ الثَوبَ الأبيضَ مِنَ الدنَس وأبْدله دارًا خيرًا مِنْ دارِه، وأهلًا خيرًا من أهله وزوجًا خيرًا من زوجه وأدْخله الجنَّةَ وأعِذْه من عذاب القبر، وفي لفظ وقِهِ فتنةَ القبرْ وعذابَ النار" .  

"عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَأَوسعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلهُ بِالْمَاءِ، وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقَّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، اللَّهُمَّ أَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ، وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ، وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَنَجِّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ، أَوْ قَالَ: قِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ، حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكوُنَ أَنَا الْمَيِّتَ؛ لِدُعَاءِ رَسُولِ الله".
