The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the 'Asr prayer and gave salutation after two rak'ahs. Dhu'l-Yadain (the possessor of long arms) stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Nothing like this has happened (neither the prayer has been shortened nor have I forgotten). He (Dhu'l-Yadain) said: Messenger of Allah, something has definitely happened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards people and said: Is Dhu'l-Yadain true (in his assertion)? They said: Messenger of Allah, he is true. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed the rest of the prayer. and then performed two prostrations while he was sitting after salutation.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ صَلَّى لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in praying 'Asr, and he said the salam after two rak'ahs. Dhul-Yadain stood up and said: 'Has the prayer been shortened, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ or did you forget?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Neither.' He said: 'One of them happened, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and said: 'Is Dhul-Yadain speaking the truth?' They said: 'Yes.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed what was left of the prayer, then he prostrated twice when he was sitting after the taslim."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Zuhr or 'Asr and said the taslim following two rak'ahs and left. Dhul-Shimalain bin 'Amr said to him: 'Has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?" The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is Dhul-Yadain saying?' They said: 'He is speaking the truth, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So he led them in praying the two rak'ahs that he missed."

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الظُّهْرَ أَوِ الْعَصْرَ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَانْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو أَنُقِصَتِ الصَّلاَةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا صَدَقَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ فَأَتَمَّ بِهِمُ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ نَقَصَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Dhuhr or Asr prayer, and then he performed the tasleem after two units of one of them. Zul-Shimalayn ibn 'Abd Amr ibn Nadlah al-Khuzai, who was an ally of the Banu Zuhrah and shorter than others, said to him, "Did you shorten the prayer, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not forget nor did I shorten." Then Zul-Shimalayn said, "Some of us saw you doing so, O Messenger of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and said, "Who do you believe, the one with two hands?" They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed the prayer, and no one among them informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two prostrations while sitting in that prayer. And this is what is witnessed, and Allah knows best, as people were content with the certainty of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they were certain.

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ أَوِ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ إِحْدَاهُمَا فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نَضْلَةَ الْخُزَاعِيُّ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي زُهْرَةَ أَقُصِرَتْ أَمْ نَسِيتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَمْ أَنْسَ وَلَمْ تُقْصَرْ» فَقَالَ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْنِي أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي تِلْكَ الصَّلَاةِ وَذَلِكَ فِيمَا يُرَى وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنَّ النَّاسَ يَقَّنُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى اسْتَيْقَنَ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Zuhr or 'Asr and said the taslim following two rak'ahs and left. Dhul-Shimalain bin 'Amr said to him: 'Has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?" The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is Dhul-Yadain saying?' They said: 'He is speaking the truth, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So he led them in praying the two rak'ahs that he missed." [AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Dhuhr or Asr prayer, then he made the salaam in the two units of prayer, then he turned and the people quickly left. They said, "The prayer was made light." The one with the two hands said, "Was the prayer made light or did you forget?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "What does the one with the two hands say?" They said, "He speaks the truth." So he prayed the two units of prayer that he had left, then he made two prostrations while he was sitting after he had made the salaam.

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الظُّهْرَ أَوِ الْعَصْرَ فَسَلَّمَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَخَرَجَ سُرْعَانُ النَّاسِ فَقَالُوا خُفِّفَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَقَالَ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ أَخُفِّفَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ قَالُوا صَدَقَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمُ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ تَرَكَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ مَا سَلَّمَ

[AI] While I was praying the Dhuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished two rak'ahs and a man from the Banu Sulaym stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did the prayer become shorter or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prayer was not shortened and I did not forget." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have only prayed two rak'ahs." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What does the one with two hands have to say?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then he stood up and prayed two more rak'ahs with them." Yahya narrated to me that Damdam ibn Jawz said that he heard Abu Hurairah say, "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated two sujood."

بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أُصَلِّي مع رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ سَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَمْ تَقْصُرْ الصلاة وَلَمْ أَنْسَهْ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَحَقٌّ مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ آخِرَيَيْنِ قَالَ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنِي ضَمْضَمُ بْنُ جَوْسٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَجْدَتَيْنِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Da'ud ibn al-Husayn that Abu Sufyan, the mawla of Ibn Abi Ahmad, said that he heard Abu Hurayra say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed asr and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'l-Yadayn stood up and said, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed what remained of the prayer, and then, remaining sitting after saying the taslim, he made two prostrations."

يَقُولُ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَقَالَ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَتَمَّ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathma said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakas of one of the two day-ti me prayers, dhuhr or asr, and said the taslim after two rakas. Dhu'sh-Shamalayn said to him, 'Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or have you forgotten?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The prayer has not been shortened and I have not forgotten.' Dhu'shShamalayn said, 'It was certainly one of those, Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached the people and said, 'Has Dh u'sh-Shamalayn spoken the truth?' They said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah,' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed what remained of the prayer, and then said, 'Peace be upon you.' "

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ إِحْدَى صَلاَتَىِ النَّهَارِ الظُّهْرِ أَوِ الْعَصْرِ فَسَلَّمَ مِنَ اثْنَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ أَقَصُرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْ نَسِيتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا قَصُرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ وَمَا نَسِيتُ فَقَالَ ذُو الشِّمَالَيْنِ قَدْ كَانَ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ

[AI] That the Prophet ﷺ missed two units of the evening prayer (Isha') and then a person with two hands came to him and said, "Did you shorten the prayer or forget?" He replied, "None of that happened." Then he turned to the people and asked, "What did the person with two hands say?" They replied, "Yes." So he completed the remaining prayer and then he performed the prostrations of forgetfulness.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سَلَّمَ مِنَ اثْنَتَيْنِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْعَشِيِّ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ «كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «أَكَمَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ » قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَأَتَمَّ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Dhuhr or Asr prayer for us and then performed the greeting (salam) in two units (rak'ahs) of one of them. So, Zul-Shimalain bin 'Abd Amr bin Nadlah al-Khuzai, an ally of Banu Zahrah, asked him, "Did the prayer become shortened or did you forget, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not forget nor did I shorten it." So, Zul-Shimalain said, "Some of it was done like that, O Messenger of Allah." [AI] Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allahﷺ led us in one of the night prayer rak'ahs and he did not pray with us except for two rak'ahs. So, a man named Dhu al-Yadayn from Khuzayah said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or did you forget?" The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "None of that was the case." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two rak'ahs with us." The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "What does Dhu al-Yadayn say?" Then he turned to the people and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two rak'ahs with us." So, the Prophetﷺ stood up, faced the qibla, and prayed the remaining two rak'ahs. Then he performed tashahhud, prostrated twice while sitting.

لِي أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِحْدَى صَلَاتَيِ الْعَشِيِّ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ بِنَا إِلَّا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ مِنْ خُزَاعَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقُصِرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ فَقَالَ «كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ بِنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا يَقُولُ ذُو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ » وَأَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمْ تُصَلِّ بِنَا إِلَّا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَصَلَّى الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْبَاقِيَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ

قَالَ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الظهر أو العصر فسلم في الركعتين فقال له ذو الشمالين ابن عُمَر بن نضلة الخزاعي وهُو حليف بني زهرة أقصرت الصلاة أم نسيت يا رَسولَ اللهِ قال لم أنسى ولم تقصر فقال ذو الشمالين قد كان بعض ذلك يا رسول الله فأقبل رسول الله على الناس فقال أصدق ذو الشمالين؟ قالوا نعم يا رَسولَ اللهِ فقام رسول الله فأتم الصلاة وسجد سجدتين وهُو جالس وهذا الحديث لا نعلَمُ أحَدًا جمع هؤلاء الجماعة فيه عَن الزُّهْرِيّ إلاَّ يُونُس وقد رَواه الأَوزَاعِيّ عَن الزُّهْرِيّ عن ثلاثة من هؤلاء عَن أبي هُرَيرة

قال سمعت أبا هريرة ؓ يقول صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الظهر فسلم في ركعتين وانصرف فقال له ذو اليدين أقصرت الصلاة يا رسولَ الله أم نسيت قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كل ذلك لم يكن فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ما يقول ذو اليدين قالوا نعم يا رسولَ الله فركع ركعتين ثم سلم ثم سجد سجدتين وهو جالس ثم سلم وهذا الحديثُ في قصة ذي اليدين قد روي عن أبي هريرة ؓ من وجوه ولا نعلم يروى عن أبي هريرة ؓ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ إِلا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ

[AI] While I was praying the Dhuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished two units of prayer and stood up. Then, a man from the tribe of Sulaym stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you shorten the prayer or forget?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not shorten it nor did I forget." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you only prayed two units." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What does the man with two hands say?" They replied, "Yes." So, he stood up and prayed two units of prayer with them.

كَانَ بعضُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ الله! فَأَقْبَلَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ (*) ذَو الْيَدَيْنِ؟ فَقَالُواْ: نَعَمْ، فَأَتَمَّ النبىُّ ﷺ مَا بَقِىَ مِن الصَّلَاةِ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَينِ وَهُوَ جَالسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ".

"عَنِ ابن شهَاب، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بن سُلَيمَان بن أَبِي حَثمَة وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بن عَبْد الرَّحْمن عَمَّن يَقْنَعَان بِحَدِيثهِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى ركْعَتَينِ فِي صَلَاةِ العصر أَو صَلَاة الظُّهْر، ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشِّمَالين بن عَبْد عمرو: يا نَبِيَّ الله! أَقَصرت الصَّلَاةُ أَمْ نَسِيت؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَم تقصر وَلَم أَنْسَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ذُو الشّمَالَيْن: بَلَى يَا نَبِيَّ الله قَدْ كَانَ بَعْض ذَلِكَ فَالْتَفَتَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: أَصَدَقَ ذُو الْيَديْن؟ قَالُوا: نَعَم يَا نَبِيَّ الله، فَقَامَ إِلى الصَّلَاة حِينَ استيقن رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ".
