The Sahabah did not trivialize sins at the time of the Prophet ﷺ

Anas said, "You all do ˹bad˺ deeds which seem insignificant in your eyes, like hair, while we used to consider those ˹deeds˺ as destructive during the life-time of the Prophet ﷺ."

إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ أَعْمَالاً هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعَرِ إِنْ كُنَّا نَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْمُوبِقَاتِ۔

[AI] "You used to bring matters that are more meticulous in your eyes than hair. We used to count them during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from the destructive things." Then, it was mentioned to Muhammad ibn Sirin, and he said, "He spoke the truth, and I see the folds of the garment because of that."

«إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ أُمُورًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ كُنَّا نَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ» فَذُكِرَ لِمُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سِيرِينَ فَقَالَ «صَدَقَ فَأَرَى جَرَّ الْإِزَارِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ»

[AI] "Indeed, you used to do deeds that were more precious in your eyes than hair. We used to count them during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the calamities."

إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ أَعْمَالًا لَهِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ كُنَّا نَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ

[AI] Indeed, you are doing actions that are more delicate in your eyes than [strands of] hair, if we were to count them according to the scale of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the sinful deeds.

إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ أَعْمَالًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ

[AI] Zaid said, "I heard Anas ibn Malik say, 'I know of sins today that are more trivial in your eyes than a strand of hair. We used to consider them major sins during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .'"

زَيْدٍقَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ الْيَوْمَ ذُنُوبًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ كُنَّا نَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ

[AI] "You perform actions that are more important to you than hair, even if we were to count them as sins during the time of the Prophet ﷺ ."

إِنَّكُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ أَعْمَالًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ

[AI] About Ubada ibn Qurt or Qurt, you are doing deeds today that are more precise in your eyes than hair. We used to count them during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the major sins, so I said to Abu Qatadah, "What if our time reaches this?" Abu Qatadah said, "That is why I say."

عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ قُرْصٍ أَوْ قُرْطٍ إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ الْيَوْمَ أَعْمَالًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ كُنَّا نَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي قَتَادَةَ فَكَيْفَ لَوْ أَدْرَكَ زَمَانَنَا هَذَا؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ لَكَانَ لِذَلِكَ أَقْوَلَ

[AI] "Worship means the son of Qurt, 'Indeed, you are performing actions today that are more precise in your eyes than poetry. If we were to count them according to the covenant of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, they would be considered as sinful.' So, I said to Abu Qatadah, 'What would happen if he were to live in our time?' He said, 'This is exactly what I say.'"

عُبَادَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ قُرْطٍ «إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ الْيَوْمَ أَعْمَالًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَعُدُّهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمُوبِقَاتِ» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي قَتَادَةَ فَكَيْفَ لَوْ أَدْرَكَ زَمَانَنَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ «هُوَ ذَا كَذَلِكَ أَقُولُ»

[AI] Indeed, you used to perform deeds that were more important in your eyes than hair, even though we used to consider them (i.e., such deeds) as destructive acts during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

إِنَّكُمْ لَتَعْمَلُونَ أَعْمَالًا هِيَ أَدَقُّ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَعُدُّ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهَا لَهِيَ الْمُوبِقَاتُ

Anas said "You people do (bad) deeds (commit sins) which seem in your eyes as tiny (minute) than hair while we used to consider those (very deeds) during the life-time of the Prophet ﷺ as destructive sins." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6492)
