bazzar:20 – Ibrāhīm b. Saʿīd al-Jawharī > al-Ḥakam b. Nāfiʿ > al-ʿAṭṭāf b. Khālid > Ṭalḥah b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr > abīhi > jaddihi > Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, do we act regarding a matter that has already been settled, or a matter newly begun?" He said, "No; rather, it is regarding a matter that has already been settled." I said, "Then what is the point of action?" He said, "Act, for everyone is facilitated toward that for which he was created." We do not know this wording to be narrated from Abu Bakr except through this route with this chain. Al-Attaf ibn Khalid was narrated from by a number of people, and he is acceptable in hadith, although he narrated hadiths from Nafi that were not corroborated.

البزّار:٢٠ – حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ قَالَ نا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ قَالَ نا الْعَطَّافُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ ؓ يَقُولُ

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، أَنَعْمَلُ فِي أَمْرٍ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنْهُ أَمْ أَمْرٍ مُؤْتَنَفٍ؟ قَالَ: «لَا، بَلْ فِي أَمْرٍ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنْهُ». قُلْتُ: فَفِيمَ الْعَمَلُ؟ قَالَ: «اعْمَلُوا، فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ لِمَا خُلِقَ لَهُ». وَهَذَا الْكَلَامُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ. وَالْعَطَّافُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَدْ حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ جَمَاعَةٌ، وَهُوَ صَالِحُ الْحَدِيثِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ قَدْ حَدَّثَ بِأَحَادِيثَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ لَمْ يُتَابَعْ عَلَيْهَا.

I heard my father say that his father heard Abu Bakr saying: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : O Messenger of Allah, are we striving for something that has already been decided or is it something to be decided as events unfold? He said: ʿRather it is for something that has already been decided.ʿ I said: So why should we strive, O Messenger of Allah? He said: “Each person will be enabled to do that for which he has been created.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 19)

الطبراني:٤٧ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زَيْدٍ الْحَوْطِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ثنا عَطَّافُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنِي طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي قَالَ
