4. Asceticism of Ayyūb (Job)

ahmad-zuhd:225ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Yazīd > Hishām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] "What remained of Ayoub was only his eyes, heart, and tongue; so the creatures varied in his body," he said. "He stayed in the garbage dump for seven years and days," or he said, "and months," said Yazid. "I doubt."

ahmad-zuhd:226ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Yazīd > Jarīr b. Ḥāzim > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr

[Machine] "O Allah, if you know that I did not sleep a full night while being hungry, and I know the place of a person who is hungry, so verify me." He said, "So he verified it and they both heard it." Then he said, "O Allah, if you know that I have never worn a shirt, and I know the place of a person who is naked, so verify me." He said, "So he verified it and they both heard it." Then he prostrated and said, "O Allah, I will not raise my head until You reveal what is in me." So Allah revealed what was inside him and said, "Once again, if Job (Ayoub) had any goodness before Allah, it would have surpassed all this."

ahmad-zuhd:227ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Ghawth b. Jābir > ʿAqīl Yadhkur

[Machine] "The Oneness of God and the reconciliation between people. And when one of them desires a need from Allah, they prostrate and then ask for their need." It was asked, "So what was his wealth?" He said, "He had three thousand fields. With each field, there was a slave. And with each slave, there was a female servant. And with each female servant, there were camels. And fourteen thousand sheep. And he never slept with a guest behind his door. And he never ate a meal without a poor person with him."

ahmad-zuhd:228ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Ibrāhīm b. Muhājir > ʿUbaydullāh b. Bābāh > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ

[Machine] "If a man's only trade is food, he becomes greedy and oppressive."

ahmad-zuhd:229ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > ʿImrān > And Hb

[Machine] I heard Wahb saying, "Job was afflicted with calamity for seven years."

ahmad-zuhd:230ʿAbdullāh > Salamah b. Shabīb > Ibn Munīb > al-Sarī > Dhakar Sulaymān al-Taymī

[Machine] That Job ﷺ stayed in the outskirts of the village for seven years.

ahmad-zuhd:231ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Yaḥyá b. Ādam > Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh > Idrīs b. Wahbb. Munabbih from his father

[Machine] So, he stood up and gave them a piece of his robe. He placed one of his hands on his knee and the other on a small bird. When he finished with them, they welcomed him and greeted him. However, he did not sit down and said, "Oh Wahb, what did the young man say?" He replied, "He said that nothing should come out of your mouth nor should any argument be presented, and your heart should be broken. Don't you know, oh Ayoub, that there are servants of Allah whom fear has silenced without them being blind or mute? Indeed, they are those who have mastery of speech, nobility of expression, experts in knowledge of Allah and His days. Except when they mention Allah, their minds become confused, their hearts are broken, and their tongues are cut off. This is to honor and respect Allah, and to magnify Him. When they wake up from that state, they rush towards Allah with good deeds, considering themselves among the wasteful ones. Indeed, they are strong vessels even when they are with the oppressors and the sinners, they are innocent and pure, except that they do not amass a great deal for themselves, nor are they satisfied with a little, and they do not measure their actions based on it. They are where you find them, wandering, fearful, and obedient. Then, he turned away from them and returned to his gathering.

ahmad-zuhd:232ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Sulaymān b. Ḥarb > Ḥammād b. Salamah > 39 Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī > Nawf al-Bikālī

[Machine] A group of the Children of Israel passed by Ayub (Job), ﷺ , and they said, "Whatever afflicted him, he only suffered because of a great sin he committed." Ayub, ﷺ , heard them say that. At that moment, he said, "Affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." [Al-Anbiya' 21:83]. He used to not call upon (God) before that.

ahmad-zuhd:233ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbdullāh b. Ayyūb al-Khurāsānī > Ibn ʿUyaynah

[Machine] When Ayub ﷺ was afflicted with the affliction that befell him, he sent to his companions and said, "Do you know what has happened to me?" They said, "As for us, nothing has appeared to us from you that we know of except that you have hidden something from us." So they gathered and went to meet a man who had more knowledge than them, and they said to him, "To what matter did the Prophet of Allah ﷺ invite you?" He said, "I will inform him of what has befallen him." So he came to Ayub and asked him, and Ayub said to him, "Because you drank a sip of water without thanking Allah for it, and you did not show gratitude for the blessings. Perhaps you sought shelter in a shade without being grateful for the blessing."
