I attended Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Masjid al-Khayf. When he finished praying, he saw two men at the back of the people who had not prayed with him. He said: “Bring them here.” So they were brought to him, trembling. He said: “What kept you from praying with us?” They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ we had already prayed in our homes.' He said: “Do not do that. If you have already prayed in your homes, then you come to a masjid in which there is a congregation, then pray with them, and it will be a voluntary prayer for you."  

شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْفَجْرِ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْخَيْفِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلاَتَهُ إِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلَيْنِ فِي آخِرِ الْقَوْمِ لَمْ يُصَلِّيَا مَعَهُ قَالَ عَلَىَّ بِهِمَا فَأُتِيَ بِهِمَا تُرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَنَا قَالاَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا فِي رِحَالِنَا قَالَ فَلاَ تَفْعَلاَ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمَا فِي رِحَالِكُمَا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُمَا مَسْجِدَ جَمَاعَةٍ فَصَلِّيَا مَعَهُمْ فَإِنَّهَا لَكُمَا نَافِلَةٌ  

Yazid prayed along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was a young boy. When he (the Prophet) had prayed there were two persons (sitting) in the corner of the mosque; they did not pray (along with the Prophet). He called for them. They were brought trembling (before him). He asked: What prevented you from praying along with us? They replied: We have already prayed in our houses. He said: Do not do so. If any of you prays in his house and finds that the imam has not prayed, he should pray along with him; and that will be a supererogatory prayer for him.  

عَنْ أَبِيهِأَنَّهُ صَلَّى مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ غُلاَمٌ شَابٌّ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى إِذَا رَجُلاَنِ لَمْ يُصَلِّيَا فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَدَعَا بِهِمَا فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا تُرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَنَا قَالاَ قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا فِي رِحَالِنَا فَقَالَ لاَ تَفْعَلُوا إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الإِمَامَ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ فَلْيُصَلِّ مَعَهُ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ نَافِلَةٌ  

"I attended Hajj with the Prophet. I prayed the Subh (Fajr) prayer with him in Masjid AI-Khaif." He said: "When the Prophet finished, he turned (from the Qiblah) and saw two men at the back of the people who had not prayed with him. He said, 'Bring them to me.' So I brought then while they were shuddering with fear. He said: 'What prevented you from praying with us?" They said: 'O Messenger of Allah!' We prayed at our camp.' So he said: 'Do not do that; when you pray in your camp then you come to a Masjid with a congregation, then pray with them. That will be a voluntary prayer for you.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Fajr in Mina, then he turned and saw two men behind the people. So, he called them and they came to him trembling. He said, "What prevented you from praying with the people?" They said, "We had already prayed in our camp." He said, "Do not do so if one of you has prayed in his camp, and then he catches up with the prayer led by the imam, then he should still pray it with him, for it will be a voluntary prayer for him."  

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْفَجْرَ بِمِنًى فَانْحَرَفَ فَرَأَى رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ وَرَاءَ النَّاسِ فَدَعَا بِهِمَا فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا تَرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ فَقَالَا قَدْ كُنَّا صَلَّيْنَا فِي الرِّحَالِ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلَا إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَلْيُصَلِّهَا مَعَهُ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُنَافِلَةٌ  

[Machine] "We performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Farewell Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the Fajr prayer, then turned around to face the people. Suddenly, he noticed two men behind the crowd who did not pray with the rest of the people. He asked for those two men to be brought to him. They came trembling, their beards wet with sweat. The Prophet ﷺ asked them, 'What prevented you from praying with the people?' They replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have already prayed when we were on our journey.' He said, 'Do not do that if any of you prays during his journey and then catches up with the Imam, let him join the prayer with him, for it will be a voluntary prayer for him.' One of them said, 'Ask forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah,' and the Prophet ﷺ asked for his forgiveness. Then, the people began to get up to approach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I also got up and, at that time, I was the most youthful and energetic among the men. I continued to move through the crowd until I reached the Prophet ﷺ and held his hand, placing it on my face or chest. I have never felt anything more pleasant or cooler than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And he was then in the Mosque of Al-Khayf."  

حَجَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَجَّةَ الْوَدَاعِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ أَوِ الْفَجْرِ قَالَ ثُمَّ انْحَرَفَ جَالِسًا وَاسْتَقْبَلَ النَّاسَ بِوَجْهِهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ وَرَاءِ النَّاسِ لَمْ يُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ ائْتُونِي بِهَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ بِهِمَا تَرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ قَالَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا فِي الرِّحَالِ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلَا إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَلْيُصَلِّهَا مَعَهُ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ نَافِلَةٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُ قَالَ وَنَهَضَ النَّاسُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَهَضْتُ مَعَهُمْ وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ أَشَبُّ الرِّجَالِ وَأَجْلَدُهُ قَالَ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَزْحَمُ النَّاسَ حَتَّى وَصَلْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذْتُ بِيَدِهِ فَوَضَعْتُهَا إِمَّا عَلَى وَجْهِي أَوْ صَدْرِي قَالَ فَمَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا أَطْيَبَ وَلَا أَبْرَدَ مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْخَيْفِ

[Machine] "On the authority of Ya'la bin 'Ata' al-Ta'ifi, who narrated from Jabir bin Yazid bin al-Aswad, who narrated from his father, he said: We prayed Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He turned around and saw two men behind the people, so he called them and they approached him trembling. Their clothes were disheveled. He asked them, 'What prevented you from praying with the people?' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we prayed on the way.' He said, 'Do not do so when any one of you has already prayed during his journey and then catches up with the prayer led by the imam. Rather, pray it with him, for it is a voluntary (nafl) prayer.'"  

عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ عَطَاءٍ الطَّائِفِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْفَجْرَ فَانْحَرَفَ فَرَأَى رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ وَرَاءِ النَّاسِ فَدَعَى بِهِمَا فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا يَرْتَعِدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّيْنَا فِي الرِّحَالِ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلَا إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَلْيُصَلِّهَا مَعَهُ فَإِنَّهَا نَافِلَةٌ  

[Machine] "We prayed the Fajr prayer with the Prophet ﷺ in Mina, and then two men came and stood discreetly. The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to be brought forward, and they presented themselves with their turbans raised high. He asked them, 'What prevented you from praying with the people? Are you Muslims?' They replied, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we had already prayed at our campsite.' He said to them, 'If you have already prayed at your campsite and then come to join the imam, then pray with him, as your prayer will be considered a voluntary prayer.'"  

صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْفَجْرَ بِمِنًى فَجَاءَ رَجُلَانِ حَتَّى وَقَفَا عَلَى رَوَاحِلِهِمَا فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا تَرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ لَهُمَا مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ أَلَسْتُمَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ؟ قَالَا بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا صَلَّيْنَا فِي رِحَالِنَا فَقَالَ لَهُمَا إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمَا فِي رِحَالِكُمَا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُمَا الْإِمَامَ فَصَلَّيَا مَعَهُ فَإِنَّهُمَا لَكُمَا نَافِلَةٌ

صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْفَجْرَ بِمِنًى فَانْحَرَفَ فَأَبْصَرَ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ وَرَاءِ النَّاسِ فَدَعَا بِهِمَا فَجِيءَ بِهِمَا تَرْعَدُ فَرَائِصُهُمَا فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ قَالَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّيْنَا فِي الرَّحْلِ قَالَ لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَلْيُصَلِّهَا مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ نَافِلَةٌ هَكَذَا  

" صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الفَجْرَ، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ انْحَرفَ فَرَأى رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ وَرَاءِ النَّاسِ فَدَعَاهُمْا فَجِئ بِهِما ترعدُ فَرَائِصُهُما فَقَالَ: مَا مَنَعكُمَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ قَالَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّيْنا فِى رِحَالِنَا، قَالَ: فَلَا تَفْعَلَا، إِذا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِى رَحْلِهِ ثُمَ أدْرَكَ الصلاةَ مَعَ الإِمَام فَليُصَلِّهَا مَعَهُ فَإِنَهَا لَهُ نَافِلَة".  

"عَنْ يزِيدَ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ قَالَ: حَجَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَجةَ الوَداع، فَصَلِّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الفَجْرِ، فَلَما صَلى اسْتَقْبَلَ الناسَ بِوَجْهِهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ بَرجُلَيْنِ فِى أُخْرَيَاتِ المَسْجِدِ لَمْ يُصَلِّيَا مَعَ الناسِ، فَقَالَ إئتُونِى بِهَذِيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ قَالَ: مَا مَنَعَكُمَا أنْ تُصَليا مَعَ النَّاسِ؟ قَالَا: قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا فِى الرحالِ، قَالَ: فَلا تَفْعَلا، فَإِذَا صَلَّى أحَدُكُمْ فِى رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أدْرَكَ الصَّلاةَ فَلْيُصَلِّها مَعَهم فَإِنَّهَا نَافِلَةُ مَا بَقِىَ".
