bukhari:4913ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbdullāh > Sulaymān b. Bilāl > Yaḥyá > ʿUbayd b. Ḥunayn > Ibn ʿAbbās > Makatht Sanah Urīd > Asʾal ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb > Āyah Famā Astaṭīʿ

For the whole year I had the desire to ask ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab regarding the explanation of a Verse (in Surat Al-Tahrim) but I could not ask him because I respected him very much. When he went to perform the Hajj, I too went along with him. On our return, while we were still on the way home. ʿUmar went aside to answer the call of nature by the Arak trees. I waited till he finished and then I proceeded with him and asked him. "O chief of the Believers! Who were the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ who aided one another against him?" He said, "They were Hafsa and ʿAisha." Then I said to him, "By Allah, I wanted to ask you about this a year ago, but I could not do so owing to my respect for you." ʿUmar said, "Do not refrain from asking me. If you think that I have knowledge (about a certain matter), ask me; and if I know (something about it), I will tell you." Then ʿUmar added, "By Allah, in the Pre-lslamic Period of Ignorance we did not pay attention to women until Allah revealed regarding them what He revealed regarding them and assigned for them what He has assigned. Once while I was thinking over a certain matter, my wife said, "I recommend that you do so-and-so." I said to her, "What have you got to do with the is matter? Why do you poke your nose in a matter which I want to see fulfilled.?" She said, How strange you are, O son of Al-Khattab! You don't want to be argued with whereas your daughter, Hafsa surely, argues with Messenger of Allah ﷺ so much that he remains angry for a full day!" ʿUmar then reported; how he at once put on his outer garment and went to Hafsa and said to her, "O my daughter! Do you argue with Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he remains angry the whole day?" H. afsa said, "By Allah, we argue with him." ʿUmar said, "Know that I warn you of Allah's punishment and the anger of Messenger of Allah ﷺ . . . O my daughter! Don't be betrayed by the one who is proud of her beauty because of the love of Messenger of Allah ﷺ for her (i.e. ʿAisha)." ʿUmar addled, "Then I went out to Um Salama's house who was one of my relatives, and I talked to her. She said, O son of Al-Khattab! It is rather astonishing that you interfere in everything; you even want to interfere between Allah's Apostle and his wives!' By Allah, by her talk she influenced me so much that I lost some of my anger. I left her (and went home). At that time I had a friend from the Ansar who used to bring news (from the Prophet) in case of my absence, and I used to bring him the news if he was absent. In those days we were afraid of one of the kings of Ghassan tribe. We heard that he intended to move and attack us, so fear filled our hearts because of that. (One day) my Ansari friend unexpectedly knocked at my door, and said, "Open Open!' I said, 'Has the king of Ghassan come?' He said, 'No, but something worse; Messenger of Allah ﷺ has isolated himself from his wives.' I said, 'Let the nose of ʿAisha and Hafsa be stuck to dust (i.e. humiliated)!' Then I put on my clothes and went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ's residence, and behold, he was staying in an upper room of his to which he ascended by a ladder, and a black slave of Messenger of Allah ﷺ was (sitting) on the first step. I said to him, 'Say (to the Prophet ﷺ ) ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab is here.' Then the Prophet ﷺ admitted me and I narrated the story to Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I reached the story of Um Salama, Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled while he was lying on a mat made of palm tree leaves with nothing between him and the mat. Underneath his head there was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibres, and leaves of a saut tree were piled at his feet, and above his head hung a few water skins. On seeing the marks of the mat imprinted on his side, I wept. He said.' 'Why are you weeping?' I replied, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Caesar and Khosrau are leading the life (i.e. Luxurious life) while you, Messenger of Allah ﷺ though you are, is living in destitute". The Prophet ﷺ then replied. 'Won't you be satisfied that they enjoy this world and we the Hereafter?' "

muslim:1479bHārūn b. Saʿīd al-Aylī > ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb > Sulaymān / Ibn Bilāl > Yaḥyá > ʿUbayd b. Ḥunayn > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās > Makatht Sanah > Urīd > Asʾal ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

I intended to ask 'Umar b. al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) about a verse, but I waited for one year to ask him out of his fear, until he went out for Pilgrimage and I also accompanied him. As he came back and we were on the way he stepped aside towards an Arak tree to ease himself. I waited for him until he was free. I then walked along with him and said: Commander of the Faithful, who are the two among the wives of Messenger of Allah ﷺ who backed up one another (in their demand for extra money)? He said: They were Hafsa and 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with them). I said to him: It is for one year that I intended to ask you about this matter but I could not date so on account of the awe for you. He said: Don't do that. If you think that I have any knowledge, do ask me about that. And if I were to know that, I would inform you. He (the narrator) stated that 'Umar had said: By Allah, during the days of ignorance we had no regard for women until Allah the Exalt- ed revealed about them what He has revealed, and appointed (turn) for them what he appointed. He said: It so happened that I was thinking about some matter that my wife said: I wish you had done that and that. I said to her: It does not concern you and you should not feel disturbed in a matter which I intend to do. She said to me: How strange is it that you, O son of Khattab, do not like anyone to retort upon you, whereas your daughter retorts upon Messenger of Allah (may peace be upou him) until he spends the day in vexation. 'Umar said: I took hold of my cloak, then came out of my house until I visited Hafsa and said to her: O daughter, (I heard) that you retort upon Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he spends the day in vexation, whereupon Hafsa said: By Allah, we do retort upon him. I said: You should bear in mind, my daughter, that I warn you against the punishment of Allah and the wrath of His Messenger ﷺ. You may not be misled by one whose beauty has fascinated her, and the love of Messenger of Allah ﷺ for her. I ('Umar) then visited Umm Salama because of my relationship with her and I talked to her. Umm Salama said to me: Umar b. al-Khattab, how strange is it that you meddle with every matter so much so that you are anxious to interfere between Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wives, and this perturbed me so much that I refrained from saying what I had to say, so I came out of her apartment, and I had a friend from the Anar. When I had been absent (from the company of the Holy Prophet) he used to bring me the news and when he had been absent I used to bring him the news, and at that time we dreaded a king of Ghassan. It was mentioned to us that he intended to attack us, and our minds were haunted by him. My friend, the Ansari, came to me, and he knocked at the door and said: Open it, open it. I said: Has the Ghassani come? He said: (The matter is) more serious than that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has separated himself from his wives. I said: Let the nose of Hafsa and 'A'isha be besmeared with dust. I then took hold of my cloth and went out until I came and found Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his attic to which he climbed by means of a ladder made of date-palm, and the servant of Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was black had been sitting at the end of the ladder. I said: This is Umar. So permission was granted to me. I narrated this news to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and as I narrated the news concerning Umm Salama, Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. He was lying on the mat and there was nothing between him and that (mat), and under his head there was a pillow made of leather and it was stuffed with plam fibres and at his feet were lying a heap of sant tree (acacia niloctica, meant for dyeing) and near his head there was hanging a hide. And I saw the marks of the maton the side of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and so I wept. He said: What makes you weep? I said: Messenger of Allah, the Khusrau and the Ceasars (spendd their lives in) the midst of (luxuries), whereas you being Messenger of Allah (are leading your life in this poverty). Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Don't you like that they should have riches of their world, and you have the Hereafter.

muslim:2502ʿAbdullāh b. Barrād al-Ashʿarī And Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamdānī > Abū Usāmah > Burayd > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

We were in Yemen when we heard of the migration of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We also set out as immigrants to him. And I was accompanied by two brothers of mine, I being the youngest of them; one of them was Abu Burda and the other one was Abu Ruhm, and there were some other persons with them. Some say they were fifty-three or fifty-two persons of my tribe. We embarked upon a boat, and the boat sailed away to the Negus of Abyssinia. There we met Ja'far b. Abu Talib and his companions. Ja'far said: Allall's Messenger ﷺ has sent us here and has commanded us to stay here and you should also stay with us. So we stayed with him and we came back (to Medina) and met Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Khaibar had been conquered. He (the Holy Prophet) allocated a share to us and in the ordinary course he did not allocate the share to one who had been absent on the occasion of the conquest of Khaibar but conferred (a share) upon him only who had been present there with him. He, however, made an exception for the people of the boat, viz. for Ja'far and his companions. He allocated a share to them, and some persons from amongst the people said to us, viz. the people of the boat: We have preceded you in migration. Asma' bint 'Umais who had migrated to Abyssinia and had come back along with them (along with immigrants) visited Hafsa, the wife of Allah's Apostle ﷺ. (Accordingly), Umar had been sitting with her (Hafsa). As 'Umar saw Asma, he said: Who is she? She (Hafsa) said: She is Asma, daughter of 'Umais. He said: She is an Abyssinian and a sea-woman. Asma said: Yes, it is so. Thereupon 'Umar said: We preceded you in migration and so we have more right to Messenger of Allah ﷺ as compared with you. At this she felt annoyed and said: 'Umar, you are not stating the fact; by Allah, you had the privilege of being in the company of the Messenger ﷺ who fed the hungry among you and instructed the ignorant amongst you, whereas we had been far (from here) in the land of Abyssinia amongst the enemies and that was all for Allah and Messenger of Allah ﷺ and, by Allah, I would never take food nor take water unless I make a mention to Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what you have said. We remained in that country in constant trouble and dread and I shall talk about it to Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) and ask him (about it). By Allah, I shall not tell a lie and deviate (from the truth) and add anything to that. So, when Allah's Apostle ﷺ came, she said: Allah's Apostle, 'Umar says so and so. Upon this Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: His right is not more than yours, for him and his companions there is one migration, but for you, i. e. for the people of the boat, there are two migrations. She said: I saw Abu Musa and the people of the boat coming to me in groups and asking me about this hadith, because there was nothing more pleasing and more significant for them than this. Abu Burda reported that Asma said: I saw Abu Musa, asking me to repeat this hadith to him again and again.

Should I not narrate to you (a hadith of the Holy Prophet) on my authority and on the authority of my mother? We thought that he meant the mother who had given him birth. He (Muhammad b. Qais) then reported that it was 'A'isha who had narrated this: Should I not narrate to you about myself and about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? We said: Yes. She said: When it was my turn for Messenger of Allah ﷺ to spend the night with me, he turned his side, put on his mantle and took off his shoes and placed them near his feet, and spread the corner of his shawl on his bed and then lay down till he thought that I had gone to sleep. He took hold of his mantle slowly and put on the shoes slowly, and opened the door and went out and then closed it lightly. I covered my head, put on my veil and tightened my waist wrapper, and then went out following his steps till he reached Baqi'. He stood there and he stood for a long time. He then lifted his hands three times, and then returned and I also returned. He hastened his steps and I also hastened my steps. He ran and I too ran. He came (to the house) and I also came (to the house). I, however, preceded him and I entered (the house), and as I lay down in the bed, he (the Holy Prophet) entered the (house), and said: Why is it, O 'A'isha, that you are out of breath? I said: There is nothing. He said: Tell me or the Subtle and the Aware would inform me. I said: Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransom for you, and then I told him (the whole story). He said: Was it the darkness (of your shadow) that I saw in front of me? I said: Yes. He gave me a nudge on the chest which I felt, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you? She said: Whatsoever the people conceal, Allah will know it. He said: Gabriel came to me when you saw me. He called me and he concealed it from you. I responded to his call, but I too concealed it from you (for he did not come to you), as you were not fully dressed. I thought that you had gone to sleep, and I did not like to awaken you, fearing that you may be frightened. He (Gabriel) said: Your Lord has commanded you to go to the inhabitants of Baqi' (to those lying in the graves) and beg pardon for them. I said: Messenger of Allah, how should I pray for them (How should I beg forgiveness for them)? He said: Say, Peace be upon the inhabitants of this city (graveyard) from among the Believers and the Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us, and those who come later on, and we shall, God willing, join you.

Send your son to my residence (to carry this haudaj), and my father said to me: Carry it (for him). So I carried it and there went along with him (with Abu Bakr) my father in order to fetch its price and he ('Azib) said to Abu Bakr: Abu Bakr, narrate to me what you both did on the night when you set out on a journey along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: We set out during the night and went on walking until it was noon, and the path was vacant and so none passed by that (until) there appeared prominently before us a large rock. It had its shade and the rays of the sun did not reach that place. So we got down at that place. I then went to the rock and levelled the ground with my hands at the place where the Prophet ﷺ would take rest under its shade. I then set the bedding and said: Messenger of Allah, go to sleep and I shall keep a watch around you. I went out and watched around him. There we saw a shepherd moving towards that rock with his flock and he intended what we intended (i. e. taking rest). I met him and said to him: Young boy, to which place do you belong? He said: I am a person from Medina. I said, is there any milk in the udders of your sheep and goats? He said: Yes. He took hold of a goat, and I said to him: Clean the udder well so that it should be free from hair, dust and impurity. I saw al-Bara' striking his hand upon the other (to give an indication) how he did that. He milked the goat for me in a wooden cup which he had with him and I had with me a bucket in which I kept water for drinking and for performing ablution. I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and did not like to awaken him from sleep but he was accidentally startled from the sleep. I poured water upon the milk (till It was cold) and I said: Messenger of Allah, take this milk. He then took It and I was delighted and he (the Holy Prophet) said: Is now not the time to march on? I said: Of course. So he marched on after the sun had passed the meridian and Suraqa b. Malik pursued us and we had been walking on soft, level ground. I said: Messenger of Allah, we are about to be overtaken by them. Thereupon he said: Be not grieved. Verily, Allah is with us. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed him and his horse sank into the earth. I think he also said: I know you have hurled curse upon me. So supplicate Allah for me and I take an oath that I shall turn everyone away who would come in search of you. So he (Messenger of Allah) supplicated Allah and he was rescued and he came back and to everyone he met, he said: I have combed all this side. In short, he diverted everyone whom he met and he in fact fulfilled his promise.

ahmad:222ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Thawrʿan Ibn ʿAbbās > Lam Azal Ḥarīṣ > Asʾal ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

I was eager to ask 'Umar about the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ concerning whom Allah said, “If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)” [at-Tahreem 66:4], until 'Umar went for Hajj and I went with him. When we were partway there, 'Umar turned aside and I turned aside with him, bringing the jug. He relieved himself, then he came to me and I poured water onto his hands, and he did wudoo’. I said: “O Ameer al -Mu'mineen, who are the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ of whom Allah said: ‘If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ) turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)’?” [at-Tahreem 66:4] 'Umar said, “How strange of you, O Ibn 'Abbas”, (az-Zuhri said: By Allah, he did not like the question, but he did not conceal anything.) He said, “They were Hafsah and 'A'ishah.” Then he started to narrate the hadeeth and said: We people of Quraish were a people who dominated women, but when we came to Madinah we found a people who were dominated by their women, and our women started to learn from their women. My house was among Banu Umayyah bin Zaid in al-'Awali. One day I got angry with my wife, and she argued with me. I did not like her to argue with me, but she said: Do you not like me to argue with you? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ argue with him, and one of them will forsake him all day until night comes, I went and entered upon Hafsah, and I said: Do you argue with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? She said: Yes. I said: Does one of you forsake him all day until night comes? She said: Yes. I said: Any one of you who does that is doomed and lost. Does any one of you feel assured that Allah will not be angry with her because of the anger of His Messenger ﷺ, for then she will be doomed? Do not argue with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do not ask him for anything. Ask me for whatever you want. And do not be misled by the fact that your neighbour is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you – referring to 'A'ishah. And ‘Umar said: I had a neighbour among the Ansar. We used to take turns to go down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He would go down one day and I would go down the next. He would bring me the news of the Revelation and other things, and I would do likewise. We were saying that Ghassan were shoeing their horses to attack us. My friend went down, then he came to me at night and knocked on my door, then he called out to me. I went out to him and he said: Something terrible has happened! I said: What? Have Ghassan come? He said: No, it is more terrible than that and worse. The Prophet ﷺ has divorced his wives! I said: Hafsah is doomed and lost! I thought that this would happen. Then when I had prayed Fajr, I got dressed, then I went down and entered upon Hafsah, who was weeping. I said: Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺdivorced you? She said: I do not know. He has secluded himself in this loft. I went to a black slave of his and said: Ask for permission for ‘Umar to enter. He went in, then he came out to me and said: I mentioned you to him but he did not say anything, I went away and came to the minbar, where I sat down. By it was a group of people, some of whom were weeping. I sat for a little while, then I could not bear it any longer, so I went to the slave and said: Ask for permission for ‘Umar to enter. He went in, then he came out to me and said: I mentioned you to him but he did not say anything. I turned to leave, then the slave called me and said: Go in, he has given you permission. So I went in and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with salam. He was resting on a reed mat that had left marks on his side. I said: O Messenger of Allah, have you divorced your wives? He looked up at me and said, “No.” I said: Allah Akbar! if you had seen us, O Messenger of Allah, we Quraish were a people who dominated women, but when we came to Madinah we found a people who were dominated by their women, and our women started to learn from their women. I got angry with my wife one day, and she started to argue with me. I did not like her to argue with me, but she said: Do you not like me to argue with you? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ argue with him, and one of them will forsake him all day until night comes. I said: Any one of them who does that is doomed and lost. Does one of them feel assured that Allah will not be angry with her because of the anger of His Messenger ﷺ,then she will be doomed? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I entered upon Hafsah and I said: Do not be misled by the fact that your neighbour (i.e. ‘Aa'ishah) is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled again. I said: O Messenger of Allah, may I speak to you freely? He said: “Yes.” So I sat down and looked around the room, and by Allah, I did not see anything in it to please the eye except three hides. I said: Pray to Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to make life prosperous for your ummah, for He has made life prosperous for the Persians and Romans, but they do not worship Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. He sat up straight and said: “Are you doubting. O son of al-Khattab? They are people whose good things have been hastened for them in this world.” I said: Pray for forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah. He had sworn that he would not enter upon them for a month, because he was so annoyed with them until Allah rebuked him.

ahmad:17019ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Muqrī > ʿIkrimah / Ibn ʿAmmār

[Machine] We were informed by Shaddad bin Abdullah Al-Damishqi, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , that Abu Umarah said, "O Amr bin Abasah, the companion of wisdom, the wisdom of giving charity is a man from the tribe of Bani Sulaym. What makes you claim that you are a quarter of Islam?" He said, "In the period of ignorance, I used to see people in misguidance and I did not see any value in idols. Then I heard about a man who was reporting news from Makkah and narrating stories. So, I rode my camel until I reached Makkah, where I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hiding while his people were bold against him. I showed kindness to him and entered to meet him. I asked him, 'Who are you?' He said, ‘I am the Messenger of Allah.’ I asked, 'What is a Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah is a Prophet.' I asked, 'Did Allah send you?' He said, 'Yes.' I asked, 'For what purpose did Allah send you?' He said, 'To worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him, to demolish idols, and to maintain family ties.' Then I asked, 'Who is with you in this?' He said, 'The free and the slave or the slave and the free.' And he mentioned that Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa and Bilal, the slave of Abu Bakr, were with him. I said, 'I will follow you.' He said, 'You are not capable of that today, but return to your family. When you hear that I have emerged, come to me.' So, I returned to my family and I embraced Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Madinah, and I continued to search for news until a delegation from Yathrib came. I asked, 'Who is this Makkian man who has come to you?' They said, 'His people wanted to kill him, but they were unable, so there was a treaty between him and them.' And we left the people in confusion. I, Amr bin Abasah, rode my camel until I reached Madinah. I entered and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you recognize me?' He said, 'Yes, aren't you the one who came to me from Makkah?' I said, 'Indeed.' So, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me what Allah has taught you, for I am ignorant.' He said, 'If you pray Fajr, then shorten your prayer until the sun rises. Then do not pray until it is fully elevated, as at that time, the disbelievers prostrate to it. When it rises the height of a spear or two, then pray, as the prayer is witnessed and forbidden until the spear is shaded by the shadow. Then shorten your prayer, as at that time, Hellfire is kindled. When the sun has fully set, then you may pray Asr. When you pray Asr, then shorten your prayer until the sun has set, as at that time, the disbelievers prostrate to it.' I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, tell me about ablution.' He said, 'None of you should perform ablution, then rinse the mouth, sniff water into the nose, and blow it out, except that his sins are expiated from his mouth and nostrils with the water when it flows. ahmad:24317Abū Usāmah > Hishām from his father > ʿĀʾishah

[Machine] When my affairs were mentioned and I was not aware of it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and gave a sermon about me. He praised and thanked Allah (glory be to Him) for what He has bestowed upon me, then he said, "As for what comes after, inform the people that they have slandered my family and, by Allah, I have never known anything bad about them. They built my family and, by Allah, I have never known anything bad about them, nor has anyone ever entered my house without my presence. I have never been absent during any journey without them being with me." Then Sa'd bin Mu'adh stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall we strike their necks?" A man from the Bani Khazraj stood up, and Umm Hassaan bin Thabit, who was the wife of that man, said, "You lie! By Allah, if they were from the Aws, you would not want to strike their necks until there was fighting between the Aws and the Khazraj within the Masjid, and I do not know anything about them." When it was evening that day, I went out for some need, and Umm Misbah was with me. She stumbled, and she said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I said, "Why do you curse your son?" She remained silent. Then she stumbled again and said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I said, "Why do you curse your son?" Then she stumbled a third time and said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I scolded her and said, "Why do you curse your son?" She said, "By Allah, I only curse him because of you." I asked, "In what matter concerning me?" Then she informed me about the story. I said, "Did my father know about it?" She said, "Yes." I asked, "And the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "And the Messenger of Allah." I became overwhelmed and started crying. Abu Bakr heard my voice while he was on the roof reciting the Qur'an. He came down and said to my mother, "What's wrong with her?" She told him what had happened. He said, "I swear to you, O daughter, that if you had not returned to your house, I would have divorced her." So I went back to my house and my parents were with me. They stayed with me until after Asr prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me. My parents were on my right and left side. The Prophet ﷺ said the Shahada (testimony of faith) and praised and thanked Allah (glory be to Him) for what He has bestowed upon him. Then he said, "O Aisha, if you have committed a mistake or wronged, repent to Allah (glory be to Him). Verily, Allah (glory be to Him) accepts repentance from His servants." Then a woman from the Ansar came and sat at the door. I said to myself, "Doesn't she have any shame?"

ibnhibban:4187Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Qutaybah > Ḥarmalah b. Yaḥyá > Ibn Wahb > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Thawr > Ibn ʿAbbās > Lam Azal Ḥarīṣ > Asʾal ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

I had been eager to ask ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet regarding whom Allah said 'If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ namely Aisha and Hafsa) turn in repentance to Allah, your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes). (66.4) till ʿUmar performed the Hajj and I too, performed the Hajj along with him. (On the way) ʿUmar went aside to answer the call of nature, and I also went aside along with him carrying a tumbler full of water, and when ʿUmar had finished answering the call of nature, I poured water over his hands and he performed the ablution. Then I said to him, "O chief of the Believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding whom Allah said: 'If you two (wives of the Prophet) turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)?" (66.4) He said, "I am astonished at your question, O Ibn ʿAbbas. They were ʿAisha and Hafsa." Then ʿUmar went on narrating the Hadith and said, "I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiyya bin Zaid who used to live in ʿAwali-al-Medina, used to visit the Prophet ﷺ in turn. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went, I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things, and when he went, he used to do the same for me. We, the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our wives, but when we came to the Ansar, we found that their women had the upper hand over their men, so our women also started learning the ways of the Ansari women. I shouted at my wife and she retorted against me and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said to me, 'Why are you so surprised at my answering you back? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet answer him back and some of them may leave (does not speak to) him throughout the day till the night.' The (talk) scared me and I said to her, 'Whoever has done so will be ruined!' Then I proceeded after dressing myself, and entered upon Hafsa and said to her, 'Does anyone of you keep the Prophet ﷺ angry till night?' She said, 'Yes.' I said, 'You are a ruined losing person! Don't you fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and thus you will be ruined? So do not ask more from the Prophet ﷺ and do not answer him back and do not give up talking to him. Ask me whatever you need and do not be tempted to imitate your neighbor (i.e., ʿAisha) in her manners for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ ." ʿUmar added,"At that time a talk was circulating among us that (the tribe of) Ghassan were preparing their horses to invade us. My Ansari companion, on the day of his turn, went (to the town) and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently and asked if I was there. I became horrified and came out to him. He said, 'Today a great thing has happened.' I asked, 'What is it? Have (the people of) Ghassan come?' He said, 'No, but (What has happened) is greater and more horrifying than that: Messenger of Allah ﷺ; has divorced his wives. ʿUmar added, "The Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives and I said "Hafsa is a ruined loser.' I had already thought that most probably this (divorce) would happen in the near future. So I dressed myself and offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and then the Prophet; entered an upper room and stayed there in seclusion. I entered upon Hafsa and saw her weeping. I asked, 'What makes you weep? Did I not warn you about that? Did the Prophet ﷺ divorce you all?' She said, 'I do not know. There he is retired alone in the upper room.' I came out and sat near the pulpit and saw a group of people sitting around it and some of them were weeping. I sat with them for a while but could not endure the situation, so I went to the upper room where the Prophet; was and said to a black slave of his, 'Will you get the permission (of the Prophet ﷺ ) for ʿUmar (to enter)?' The slave went in, talked to the Prophet ﷺ about it and then returned saying, 'I have spoken to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned you but he kept quiet.' Then I returned and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit. but I could not bear the situation and once again I said to the slave, 'Will you get the permission for ʿUmar?' He went in and returned saying, 'I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet.' So I returned again and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit, but I could not bear the situation, and so I went to the slave and said, 'Will you get the permission for ʿUmar?' He went in and returned to me saying, 'I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet.' When I was leaving, behold! The slave called me, saying, 'The Prophet ﷺ has given you permission.' Then I entered upon Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw him Lying on a bed made of stalks of date palm leaves and there was no bedding between it and him. The stalks left marks on his side and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with date-palm fires. I greeted him and while still standing I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Have you divorced your wives?' He looked at me and said, 'No.' I said, 'Allah Akbar!' And then, while still standing, I said chatting, 'Will you heed what I say, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? We, the people of Quraish used to have power over our women, but when we arrived at Medina we found that the men (here) were overpowered by their women.' The Prophet ﷺ smiled and then I said to him, 'Will you heed what I say, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I entered upon Hafsa and said to her, "Do not be tempted to imitate your companion (ʿAisha), for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet.' " The Prophet ﷺ smiled for a second time. When I saw him smiling, I sat down. Then I looked around his house, and by Allah, I could not see anything of importance in his house except three hides, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Invoke Allah to make your followers rich, for the Persians and the Romans have been made prosperous and they have been given (the pleasures of the world), although they do not worship Allah.' Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ sat up as he was reclining. and said, 'Are you of such an opinion, O the son of Al-Khattab? These are the people who have received the rewards for their good deeds in this world.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Ask Allah to forgive me.' Then the Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives for twenty-nine days because of the story which Hafsa had disclosed to ʿAisha. The Prophet ﷺ had said, 'I will not enter upon them (my wives) for one month,' because of his anger towards them, when Allah had admonished him. So, when twenty nine days had passed, the Prophet ﷺ first entered upon ʿAisha. ʿAisha said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You had sworn that you would not enter upon us for one month, but now only twenty-nine days have passed, for I have been counting them one by one.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'The (present) month is of twenty nine days.' ʿAisha added, 'Then Allah revealed the Verses of the option. (2) And out of all his-wives he asked me first, and I chose him.' Then he gave option to his other wives and they said what ʿAisha had said . " (1) The Prophet, ' had decided to abstain from eating a certain kind of food because of a certain event, so Allah blamed him for doing so. Some of his wives were the cause of him taking that decision, therefore he deserted them for one month. See Qur'an: (66.4) (Using translation from Bukhārī 5191)

ibnhibban:4268aIbn Qutaybah > Ibn Abū al-Sarī > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Thawr > Ibn ʿAbbās > Lam Azal Ḥarīṣ > Asʾal ʿUmar b.

(Using translation from Aḥmad 222)

tabarani:19549Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Khālid al-Ḥarrānī from my father > ʿAttāb b. Bashīr > Khuṣayf > Miqsam > ʿĀʾishah

[Machine] "A woman with a tray entered upon me, and then we went out to visit a neighborhood called Hair. Um Mistah stepped on a bone or a thorn, and she said, 'May Mistah be miserable.' I said, 'You spoke badly, a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .' She said, 'I bear witness that you are one of the neglectful, believing women. Do you know what has been said about you?' I said, 'No, by Allah.' She said, 'When did the Messenger of Allah make a covenant with you?' I said, 'The Messenger of Allah does with his wives what he desires. He starts with the one he loves the most, and then comes to the one he loves less.' She said, 'Indeed, he has described you in such and such way.' I fainted, and the news reached Um Rumman, my mother. When she was informed of the situation, she came to me and carried me to her house. The Messenger of Allah was informed that Aisha had been informed of the situation, so he came to her, entered upon her, and sat beside her. He said, 'O Aisha, indeed Allah has made repentance wide.' This increased me in trouble. While we were in this state, Abu Bakr entered upon me and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what are you waiting for regarding this woman who has betrayed and embarrassed you?' I said, 'This only increased me in trouble.' He said, 'Send for Ali and ask him, "What do you see in Aisha?"' He said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Ask her and do not hide it from me, as Allah wills.' She said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah, I do testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'I am asking you about something, so do not hide it from me.' She said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I will inform you of anything you ask me, and I will not hide anything from you, Allah willing.' He said, 'I have been with Aisha, so have you seen anything from her that you dislike?' She said, 'No, by the One who sent you with Prophethood, since I have been with her, I have not seen anything from her that I dislike, except for her going to sleep while forgetting about the dough, and then a sheep came and ate it.' He sent for Usamah and said, 'O Usamah, what do you see in Aisha?' He said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Tell me what you see in her.' He said, 'I think she should be detained until Allah informs you concerning her.' She said, 'There was none present except a little time until the revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah. The delight was continuously seen on his face. Her excuse came down from the heavens, meaning from Allah. Then the Messenger of Allah said, 'Rejoice, O Aisha! Rejoice, O Aisha! Allah has informed me concerning your excuse.' So, I uttered gratitude to Him and to the Companion."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , sent Amr ibn al-As with the army of Dhat as-Salsal. Abu Bakr and Umar were also sent with him, as well as their companions, and they set out until they reached the mountain of Tayyih. Amr ibn al-As said, "Look for a man who knows the way." They replied, "We only know Rafi' ibn Amr, who used to be a bandit in the time of ignorance (pre-Islamic era)" So I asked Tariq, "What does 'Rabil' mean?" He said, "It is a thief who raids people alone and robs them." Rafi' then said, "When we completed our raids and reached the place we had left, I noticed Abu Bakr and went to him. I said, 'O Companion of the Sandals, I have noticed you among your companions. Bring me something that if I learn it, I will be like you.' He said, 'Do you memorize your five fingers?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and establish the five daily prayers, give Zakat if you have wealth, perform Hajj, and fast during Ramadan?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'And something else, you should not be commanded by two people.' I asked, 'Would authority be limited to those who were present at Badr?' He replied, 'It is soon to spread until it reaches you and whoever is below you. When Allah sent His Prophet, people entered Islam, some of whom were guided by Allah, while others were forced by the sword. They are the neighbors of Allah, living in His protection. If a man is a ruler and the people are oppressed, but he does not take revenge on behalf of some of them from others, then Allah will take revenge on him. Indeed, a man can have a sheep taken by his neighbor and he will remain angry on behalf of his neighbor. And Allah is behind (i.e. in support of) the neighbor.' Rafi' said, 'I stayed for a year, and then Abu Bakr was appointed as Caliph. So I went to him and said, 'I am Rafi', I met you on such and such a day and at such and such a place.' He said, 'I remember.' I said, 'You forbade me from ruling (in reference to the incident when he was a bandit), but then you rode with a greater nation than that of Muhammad, ﷺ .' He said, 'Yes, and whoever does not stand with them with the Book of Allah has the curse of Allah upon him," meaning the curse of Allah.

(Using translation from Aḥmad 222)
