14. Book of Marriage
Ibn Masu’d reported the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ as saying “ A woman should not rub her body directly with the body of another woman so that she describes it to her husband as if he were looking at her.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2150)
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A woman is not to touch a woman such that she can describe her to her husband as if he is looking at her." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2792)
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered a wall of the Ansar, and behold, there were two camels fighting and thundering. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached them and put their reins on the ground. He said, "Whoever has anything with him should prostrate to him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not appropriate for anyone to prostrate to anyone else. Even if there was someone who should prostrate to someone, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands because of the great right Allah has placed upon them."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a woman prays her five daily prayers, fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, she will enter Paradise through whichever gate she pleases."
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his daughter and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my daughter refuses to get married." The Prophet ﷺ said to her, "Obey your father." She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not get married until you inform me of the rights of the husband over his wife." The Prophet ﷺ said, "The right of the husband over his wife is that if he has a wound, she should lick it (i.e., give him her full attention)." She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never get married." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not marry them without their guardian's permission."
[Machine] I heard the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saying, "If a man calls his wife for his need, she should respond to him even if she is busy at the grinding stone."
[Machine] The Jews said, "Indeed, when a man approaches his wife and she is on her period, if their child is conceived, it is closer related to the wife. But if their child is not conceived, then they are equal in relationship, as they share the same lineage."

He said, "Do you not see that if he were to do it in a prohibited manner, he would be sinful? Likewise, if he were to do it in a permissible manner, he would receive a reward."
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A woman should not allow anyone into her husband's house while he is present, except with his permission."

[Machine] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "It is not permissible for a woman to fast while her husband is present without his permission, and no man should enter her house if he dislikes it. Whatever she gives in charity, she will have half of its reward, and she was created from a rib."
Abdullah bin Abu Awfa said “When Muadh bin Jabal came from Sham, he prostrated to the Prophet who said: 'What is this, O Muadh?' He said: 'I went to Sham and saw them prostrating to their bishops and patricians and I wanted to do that for you.' The messenger of Allah said: 'Do not do that. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone other than Allah, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! No woman can fulfill her duty towards Allah until she fulfills her duty towards her husband. If he asks her (for intimacy) even if she is on her camel saddle, she should not refuse.' ” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1853)
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Whichever man calls his wife and she does not respond to him, he will go to sleep angry with her until the angels curse her until morning."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If one of you calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, then the angels curse her until morning."

The Prophet ﷺ said: The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4682)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, woman was created from a rib, and if you try to straighten her, you will break her. So, do not try to straighten her and live with her in harmony."

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allahﷺ he said, "Indeed, the example of a woman is like a rib, if you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you enjoy her, you will enjoy her while she still has some crookedness in her. So enjoy her according to what remains of her crookedness."
[Machine] "If I bring the Prophet ﷺ a container, he would take it and I would drink from it. Then, the Prophet ﷺ would take it and place his blessed mouth in the same place as mine. And if I take a piece of meat, he would take it and place his blessed mouth in the same place as mine, and he would eat it while I am on my period."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that a man should come to his family like (an unexpected) night visitor doubting their fidelity and spying into their lapses. (Using translation from Muslim 715ab)
I heard 'Aishah say: "The Prophet used to stay with Zainab bint Jahsh and drink honey at her house. Hafsah and I agreed that if the Prophet came to either of us, she would say: 'I detect the smell of Maghafir (a nasty-smelling gum) on you. Have you eaten Maghafir?' He went to one of them and she said that to him. He said: 'No, rather I drank honey at the house of Zainab bint Jahsh, but I will never do it again.' Then the following was revealed: 'O Prophet! Why do you forbid (for yourself) that which Allah has allowed to you' up to: 'If you two turn in repentance to Allah' -'Aishah and Hafsah- 'And (remember) when the Prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives.' refers to him saying: 'No, rather I drank honey.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3795)
The Messenger of Allah said: "Whichever woman seeks a Khul from her husband without harm (cause), then the scent of Paradise will be unlawful for her." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1187)
[Machine] "Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ apologized to Abu Bakr for Aisha, and the Prophet ﷺ did not think that what happened to her would happen. Abu Bakr raised his hand and struck her on the chest, and the Prophet ﷺ witnessed that and said, 'O Abu Bakr, I will never seek an excuse from you for her again.'"
[Machine] The men sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to strike women, and he granted them permission. They then struck them, and he slept. Later, he heard a loud noise and said, "What is this?" They replied, "You gave permission to men to strike women, so they struck them." He then forbade them and said, "The best of you is the best to his wife, and I am the best among you to his wives."

I had been eager to ask ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet regarding whom Allah said 'If you two (wives of the Prophet ﷺ namely Aisha and Hafsa) turn in repentance to Allah, your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes). (66.4) till ʿUmar performed the Hajj and I too, performed the Hajj along with him. (On the way) ʿUmar went aside to answer the call of nature, and I also went aside along with him carrying a tumbler full of water, and when ʿUmar had finished answering the call of nature, I poured water over his hands and he performed the ablution. Then I said to him, "O chief of the Believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding whom Allah said: 'If you two (wives of the Prophet) turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes)?" (66.4) He said, "I am astonished at your question, O Ibn ʿAbbas. They were ʿAisha and Hafsa." Then ʿUmar went on narrating the Hadith and said, "I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiyya bin Zaid who used to live in ʿAwali-al-Medina, used to visit the Prophet ﷺ in turn. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went, I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things, and when he went, he used to do the same for me. We, the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our wives, but when we came to the Ansar, we found that their women had the upper hand over their men, so our women also started learning the ways of the Ansari women. I shouted at my wife and she retorted against me and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said to me, 'Why are you so surprised at my answering you back? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet answer him back and some of them may leave (does not speak to) him throughout the day till the night.' The (talk) scared me and I said to her, 'Whoever has done so will be ruined!' Then I proceeded after dressing myself, and entered upon Hafsa and said to her, 'Does anyone of you keep the Prophet ﷺ angry till night?' She said, 'Yes.' I said, 'You are a ruined losing person! Don't you fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and thus you will be ruined? So do not ask more from the Prophet ﷺ and do not answer him back and do not give up talking to him. Ask me whatever you need and do not be tempted to imitate your neighbor (i.e., ʿAisha) in her manners for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ ." ʿUmar added,"At that time a talk was circulating among us that (the tribe of) Ghassan were preparing their horses to invade us. My Ansari companion, on the day of his turn, went (to the town) and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently and asked if I was there. I became horrified and came out to him. He said, 'Today a great thing has happened.' I asked, 'What is it? Have (the people of) Ghassan come?' He said, 'No, but (What has happened) is greater and more horrifying than that: Messenger of Allah ﷺ; has divorced his wives. ʿUmar added, "The Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives and I said "Hafsa is a ruined loser.' I had already thought that most probably this (divorce) would happen in the near future. So I dressed myself and offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and then the Prophet; entered an upper room and stayed there in seclusion. I entered upon Hafsa and saw her weeping. I asked, 'What makes you weep? Did I not warn you about that? Did the Prophet ﷺ divorce you all?' She said, 'I do not know. There he is retired alone in the upper room.' I came out and sat near the pulpit and saw a group of people sitting around it and some of them were weeping. I sat with them for a while but could not endure the situation, so I went to the upper room where the Prophet; was and said to a black slave of his, 'Will you get the permission (of the Prophet ﷺ ) for ʿUmar (to enter)?' The slave went in, talked to the Prophet ﷺ about it and then returned saying, 'I have spoken to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned you but he kept quiet.' Then I returned and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit. but I could not bear the situation and once again I said to the slave, 'Will you get the permission for ʿUmar?' He went in and returned saying, 'I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet.' So I returned again and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit, but I could not bear the situation, and so I went to the slave and said, 'Will you get the permission for ʿUmar?' He went in and returned to me saying, 'I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet.' When I was leaving, behold! The slave called me, saying, 'The Prophet ﷺ has given you permission.' Then I entered upon Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw him Lying on a bed made of stalks of date palm leaves and there was no bedding between it and him. The stalks left marks on his side and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with date-palm fires. I greeted him and while still standing I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Have you divorced your wives?' He looked at me and said, 'No.' I said, 'Allah Akbar!' And then, while still standing, I said chatting, 'Will you heed what I say, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? We, the people of Quraish used to have power over our women, but when we arrived at Medina we found that the men (here) were overpowered by their women.' The Prophet ﷺ smiled and then I said to him, 'Will you heed what I say, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I entered upon Hafsa and said to her, "Do not be tempted to imitate your companion (ʿAisha), for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet.' " The Prophet ﷺ smiled for a second time. When I saw him smiling, I sat down. Then I looked around his house, and by Allah, I could not see anything of importance in his house except three hides, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Invoke Allah to make your followers rich, for the Persians and the Romans have been made prosperous and they have been given (the pleasures of the world), although they do not worship Allah.' Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ sat up as he was reclining. and said, 'Are you of such an opinion, O the son of Al-Khattab? These are the people who have received the rewards for their good deeds in this world.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Ask Allah to forgive me.' Then the Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives for twenty-nine days because of the story which Hafsa had disclosed to ʿAisha. The Prophet ﷺ had said, 'I will not enter upon them (my wives) for one month,' because of his anger towards them, when Allah had admonished him. So, when twenty nine days had passed, the Prophet ﷺ first entered upon ʿAisha. ʿAisha said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You had sworn that you would not enter upon us for one month, but now only twenty-nine days have passed, for I have been counting them one by one.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'The (present) month is of twenty nine days.' ʿAisha added, 'Then Allah revealed the Verses of the option. (2) And out of all his-wives he asked me first, and I chose him.' Then he gave option to his other wives and they said what ʿAisha had said . " (1) The Prophet, ' had decided to abstain from eating a certain kind of food because of a certain event, so Allah blamed him for doing so. Some of his wives were the cause of him taking that decision, therefore he deserted them for one month. See Qur'an: (66.4) (Using translation from Bukhārī 5191)

[Machine] "When the Prophet ﷺ secludes himself from his wives, I entered the mosque and the people were pelting stones and saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced his wives. This was before they were commanded to wear the veil. Umar said, 'I will surely find out what happened today.' So, I went into Aisha's room and said, 'O daughter of Abu Bakr, it has come to my attention that you are causing harm to Allah and His Messenger.' She said, 'What is your concern, son of Khattab? You should worry about your own wife.' Then, I went to Hafsah, the daughter of Umar, and said, 'O Hafsah, it has come to my attention that you are causing harm to Allah and His Messenger. I know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ does not love you, and if it were not for me, he would have divorced you.' She started crying intensely, so I asked, 'Where is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said, 'He is in his chamber in the drinking area.' I entered and found Rabah, a young servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sitting on the edge of the drinking area, resting his feet on a wooden stool. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reclining on a mat made of date palm leaves. I called out to Rabah, 'Allow me to enter and speak with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He looked towards the room and then looked at me without saying anything. I said, 'O Rabah, allow me to enter so that I may speak with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I believe that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assumes that I have come because of Hafsah. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands me to strike her neck, I will surely do so.' I raised my voice, and he nodded at me with his hand. So, I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was lying on his side on a mat. I sat down, and I noticed that he had nothing on him except for a lower garment. The mat had left marks on his side. I looked around the room and saw a handful of dates and their seeds on one side of the room. I woke him up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is bothering you about the matter of women? If you have divorced them, Allah and His angels, Gabriel and Michael, myself and Abu Bakr, are with you. Whenever I express gratitude to Allah through words, I hope that Allah will confirm what I say.' Then, the verse of choice was revealed: 'It may be that if he divorces you, his Lord will give him instead wives better than you.' (Quran 66:5) 'And if you are in dispute with one another, then Allah is his protector.' (Quran 66:6) Aisha and Hafsah were disputing with the other wives of the Prophet ﷺ. I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, have you divorced them?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, should I go and inform them that you have not divorced them?' He said, 'Yes, if you wish.' I continuously spoke to him until the anger disappeared from his face, and he smiled. He was one of the most handsome people, with a wide mouth. Then, the Prophet ﷺ descended, and I held onto a trunk. He walked as if his hand was always touching something. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, when you were inside the room, there were twenty-nine people in there, including you. I stood near the door of the mosque and called out loudly, but you did not divorce your wives. Then, this verse was revealed: 'And when an order comes to them from security or fear, they broadcast it. If only they referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those among them who are [willing to] investigate or ascertain the truth would have known it.' (Quran 4:83) I was the one who investigated this matter, and Allah revealed the verse of choice."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not hit the slave girls of Allah." The women began to disagree and their manners worsened towards their husbands. Then Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "The women have disagreed and their manners have worsened towards their husbands since you prohibited hitting them." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "So, hit them." The people then began to hit their wives that night. Many women came complaining about being hit, so the Prophet ﷺ said in the morning, "Indeed, Muhammed's family has been surrounded by seventy women, all of them complaining about being hit, and I swear by Allah, you will not find those women to be the best among you."
