Noah (Meccan)

quran:71:1 – In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, ˹saying˺, "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."  

Verily We sent Noah to his people ˹saying˺: ‘Warn your people before there come on them — should they not believe — a painful chastisement’, in this world and in the Hereafter.
القرآن:٧١:١ – بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنْذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ  

{إنا أرسلنا نوحا إلى قومه أَن أَنذر} أي بإنذار {قومك من قبل أن يأتيهم} إن لم يؤمنوا {عذاب أَليم} مؤلم في الدنيا والآخرة.
quran:71:2 –

He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner,  

He said, ‘O my people, I am indeed a plain warner to you, one whose warning is plain,
القرآن:٧١:٢ –

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ  

{قال يا قوم إني لكم نذير مبين} بيِّن الإنذار.
quran:71:3 –

˹Saying˺, 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me.  

˹to tell you˺ that ˹you should˺ worship God and fear Him and obey me,
القرآن:٧١:٣ –

أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ  

{أن} أي بأن أقول لكم {اعبدوا الله واتقوه وأطيعون}.
quran:71:4 –

Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time ˹set by˺ Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew.' "  

that He may forgive you some of your sins (min dhunūbikum, ‘some of your sins’: min may be taken as extra, because submission to God (islām) expunges everything ˹of sin that was committed˺ previous to it; or it ˹min˺ may be understood as partitive, to point out that which is due to ˹those who were already God’s˺ servants) and defer you, without chastising ˹you˺, until an appointed term, the term for death. Indeed when God’s term, for your chastisement — should you not believe — comes, it cannot be deferred, if only you knew’, this, you would believe.
القرآن:٧١:٤ –

يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ مِنْ ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ  

{يغفر لكم من ذنوبكم} من زائدة فإن الإسلام يغفر به ما قبله، أو تبعيضية لإخراج حقوق العباد {ويؤخركم} بلا عذاب {إلى أجل مسمى} أجل الموت {إن أجل الله} بعذابكم إن لم تؤمنوا {إذا جاء لا يؤخر لو كنتم تعلمون} ذلك لآمنتم.
quran:71:5 –

He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people ˹to truth˺ night and day.  

He said, ‘My Lord, I have summoned my people night and day, that is to say, continuously without interruption,
القرآن:٧١:٥ –

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا  

{قال رب إني دعوت قومي ليلا ونهارا} أي دائما متصلا.
quran:71:6 –

But my invitation increased them not except in flight.  

but my summon has only increased their evasion, of faith.
القرآن:٧١:٦ –

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائِي إِلَّا فِرَارًا  

{فلم يزدهم دعائي إلا فرارا} عن الإيمان.
quran:71:7 –

And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with ˹great˺ arrogance.  

And indeed whenever I summoned them, so that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, in order not to hear what I say, and draw their cloaks over themselves, they cover their heads with them in order not to catch sight of me, and they persist, in their disbelief, and act in great arrogance, disdaining faith.
القرآن:٧١:٧ –

وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا  

{وإني كلما دعوتهم لتغفر لهم جعلوا أصابعهم في آذانهم} لئلا يسمعوا كلامي {واستغشوا ثيابهم} غطوا رؤوسهم بها لئلا ينظروني {وأصروا} على كفرهم {واستكبروا} تكبروا عن الإيمان {استكبارا}.
quran:71:8 –

Then I invited them publicly.  

Then indeed I summoned them aloud, that is to say, at the top of my voice;
القرآن:٧١:٨ –

ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا  

{ثم إني دعوتهم جهارا} أي بأعلى صوتي.
quran:71:9 –

Then I announced to them and ˹also˺ confided to them secretly  

then assuredly I proclaimed to them, with my voice, and I confided, my words, to them secretly,
القرآن:٧١:٩ –

ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنْتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا  

{ثم إني أَعلنت لهم} صوتي {وأسررت} الكلام {لهم إسرارا}.
quran:71:10 –

And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.  

saying, “Ask your Lord for forgiveness, from idolatry. Assuredly He is ever Forgiving.
القرآن:٧١:١٠ –

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا  

{فقلت استغفروا ربكم} من الشرك {إنه كان غفارا}.
quran:71:11 –

He will send ˹rain from˺ the sky upon you in ˹continuing˺ showers  

He will release the heaven, the rain — for they had been deprived of it — for you in torrents, in plenteous showers,
القرآن:٧١:١١ –

يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا  

{يرسل السماء} المطر وكانوا قد منعوه {عليكم مدرارا} كثير الدرور.
quran:71:12 –

And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.  

and furnish you with wealth and sons, and assign to you gardens, orchards, and assign to you, running, rivers.
القرآن:٧١:١٢ –

وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْهَارًا  

{ويمددكم بأموال وبنين ويجعل لكم جنات} بساتين {ويجعل لكم أنهارا} جارية.
quran:71:13 –

What is ˹the matter˺ with you that you do not attribute to Allah ˹due˺ grandeur  

What is wrong with you that you do not hope for dignity from God, that is to say, ˹that˺ you ˹do not˺ hope that God will dignify you by becoming believers,
القرآن:٧١:١٣ –

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا  

{ما لكم لا ترجون لله وقارا} أي تأملون وقار الله إياكم بأن تؤمنوا.
quran:71:14 –

While He has created you in stages?  

when verily He created you in stages? (atwār is the plural of tūr, which means a state). Thus the sperm-drop is one state, the blood clot is another state, and so on, until the creation of the human being is complete: reflecting on ˹the manner of˺ his creation necessarily leads to belief in his Creator.
القرآن:٧١:١٤ –

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا  

{وقد خلقكم أطوارا} جمع طور وهو الحال، فطورا نطفة وطورا علقة إلى تمام خلق الإنسان، والنظر في خلقه يوجب الإيمان بخالقه.
quran:71:15 –

Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers  

Have you not seen how God created seven heavens in layers, one on top of the other,
القرآن:٧١:١٥ –

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا  

{ألم تروا} تنظروا {كيف خلق الله سبع سماوات طباقا} بعضها فوق بعض.
quran:71:16 –

And made the moon therein a ˹reflected˺ light and made the sun a burning lamp?  

and made the moon therein — that is to say, within their totality, ˹but˺ which is ˹effectively˺ true in the case of the heaven of this world — as a light and made the sun as a lamp?, as an illuminating lantern, more powerful than the light of the moon.
القرآن:٧١:١٦ –

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا  

{وجعل القمر فيهن} أي في مجموعهن الصادق بالسماء الدنيا {نورا وجعل الشمس سراجا} مصباحا مضيئا وهو أقوي من نور القمر.
quran:71:17 –

And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth a ˹progressive˺ growth.  

And God has caused you to grow, He has created you, from the earth, for He created your father Adam from it.
القرآن:٧١:١٧ –

وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا  

{والله أَنبتكم} خلقكم {من الأرض} إذ خلق أباكم آدم منها {نباتا}.
quran:71:18 –

Then He will return you into it and extract you ˹another˺ extraction.  

Then He will make you return into it, entombed ˹in your graves˺, and bring you forth, for the resurrection, ˹with a veritable bringing forth˺.
القرآن:٧١:١٨ –

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا  

{ثم يعيدكم فيها} مقبورين {ويخرجكم} للبعث {إخراجا}.
quran:71:19 –

And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse  

And God has made the earth a flat ˹open˺ expanse for you,
القرآن:٧١:١٩ –

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا  

{والله جعل لكم الأرض بساطا} مبسوطة.
quran:71:20 –

That you may follow therein roads of passage.' "  

so that you may follow throughout it spacious routes.” ’
القرآن:٧١:٢٠ –

لِتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا  

{لتسلكوا منها سبلا} طرقا {فجاجا} واسعة.
quran:71:21 –

Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.  

Noah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed, that is, the riffraff and the paupers ˹among them have followed˺, those whose wealth and children, namely, their leaders who have been blessed with such things (read wulduhu or waladuhu, ‘whose children’, the first of which is said to be the plural of walad, similar ˹in pattern˺ to khasab, khushb, or in fact ˹it is said to be˺ of the same meaning ˹as walad, but an alternative form˺ as in the case of bukhl or bakhal, ‘niggardliness’), only add to their loss, ˹to˺ their insolence and disbelief.
القرآن:٧١:٢١ –

قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَنْ لَمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلَّا خَسَارًا  

{قال نوح رب إنهم عصوني واتبعوا} أي السفلة والفقراء {من لم يزده ماله وَوُلْدُهُ} وهم الرؤساء المنعم عليهم بذلك، وولد بضم الواو وسكون اللام وبفتحهما، والأول قيل جمع ولد بفتحهما كخشب وخشب وقيل بمعناه كبخل وبخل {إلا خسارا} طغيانا وكفرا.
quran:71:22 –

And they conspired an immense conspiracy.  

And they have devised, namely, the leaders, a mighty plot, extremely outrageous, by denying Noah and harming him as well as his followers,
القرآن:٧١:٢٢ –

وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا كُبَّارًا  

{ومكروا} أي الرؤساء {مكرا كبَّارا} عظيما جدا بأن كذبوا نوحا وآذوه ومن اتبعه.
quran:71:23 –

And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr.  

and have said, to the riffraff: “Do not abandon your gods, and do not abandon Wadd (read Wadd or Wudd) nor Suwā‘, nor Yaghūth and Ya‘ūq and Nasr” — these being the names of their idols.
القرآن:٧١:٢٣ –

وَقَالُوا لَا تَذَرُنَّ آلِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا  

{وقالوا} للسفلة {لا تَذَرُنَّ آلهتكم ولا تذرن ودا} بفتح الواو وضمها {ولا سواعا ولا يغوث ويعوق ونسرا} هي أسماء أصنامهم.
quran:71:24 –

And already they have misled many. And, ˹my Lord˺, do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."  

And they have certainly led astray, by these ˹gods˺, many, people, by commanding them to worship them. And do not ˹O God˺ increase the evildoers except in error!’ (wa-lā tazidi’l-zālimīna illā dalālan is a supplement to qad adallū, ‘they have certainly led astray’): He ˹Noah˺ invoked God against them when it was revealed to him that, ‘None of your people will believe except he who has already believed’ ˹Q. 11:36˺.
القرآن:٧١:٢٤ –

وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا ۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَالًا  

{وقد أضلوا} بها {كثيرا} من الناس بأن أمروهم بعبادتهم {ولا تزد الظالمين إلا ضلالا} عطفا على قد أضلوا دعا عليهم لما أوحي إليه أنه لن يؤمن من قومك إلا من قد آمن.
quran:71:25 –

Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah ˹any˺ helpers.  

Because of (mimmā: mā indicates a relative clause) their iniquities (khatāyāhum: a variant reading has khatī’ātihim) they were drowned, by the Flood, then made to enter the Fire, with which they were punished underwater after drowning. And they did not find for themselves besides, that is to say, other than, God any helpers, to protect them against the chastisement.
القرآن:٧١:٢٥ –

مِمَّا خَطِيئَاتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا فَأُدْخِلُوا نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ أَنْصَارًا  

{مما} ما صلة {خطاياهم} وفي قراءة خطيئآتهم بالهمز {أُغرقوا} بالطوفان {فأُدْخِلوا نارا} عوقبوا بها عقب الإغراق تحت الماء {فلم يجدوا لهم من دون} أي غير {الله أنصارا} يمنعون عنهم العذاب.
quran:71:26 –

And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.  

And Noah said, ‘My Lord, do not leave from among the disbelievers a single dweller upon the earth (dayyār means ‘one who inhabits a dwelling ˹dār˺’), in other words, not one.
القرآن:٧١:٢٦ –

وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا  

{وقال نوح رب لا تذر على الأرض من الكافرين ديَّارا} أي نازل دار، والمعنى أحدا.
quran:71:27 –

Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except ˹every˺ wicked one and ˹confirmed˺ disbeliever.  

Assuredly if You leave them, they will lead Your servants astray, and will beget only disbelieving profligates (fājir and kaffār derive ˹respectively˺ from yafjuru and yakfuru): he said this on account of the mentioned revelation that had been given to him.
القرآن:٧١:٢٧ –

إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوا إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا  

{إنك إن تذرهم يُضلوا عبادك ولا يلدوا إلا فاجرا كفارا} من يفجر ويكفر، قال ذلك لما تقدم من الإيحاء إليه.
quran:71:28 –

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction."  

My Lord, forgive me and my parents — both of whom were believers — and whoever enters my house, my dwelling or my place of worship, as a believer, and believing men and believing women, to the Day of Resurrection, and do not increase the evildoers except in ruin’, in destruction — and thus they were destroyed. Meccan, consisting of 28 verses.
القرآن:٧١:٢٨ –

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًا  

{رب اغفر لي ولوالديَّ} وكانا مؤمنين {ولمن دخل بيتي} منزلي أو مسجدي {مؤمنا وللمؤمنين والمؤمنات} إلى يوم القيامة {ولا تزد الظالمين إلا تبارا} هلاكا فأهلكوا.
